Washed out still after applying fix - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone, so I set smart dimmer off but it doesn't help. I turn on my tablet and it's always washed out and quite a bit of ghosting. Anyone know any way of fixing it?

Same here. I sent it back. Ordered a new one a couple of weeks later from another place, same issue.
There are many articles and threads about this problem, but unfortunately Google and ASUS seem to ignore it. And even here on xda, people get defensive about their Nexus 7 and downplays the problem, attacks DisplayMate for scientifically illustrating the problem etc.
It annoys the hell out of me because I _want_ to love the Nexus 7, I _want_ to _want_ to keep it. It has great hardware, great software and even the IPS screen is great, but unfortunately the end result is a display that is seriously miscalibrated. The simplest calibration tests of black level, shadow detail, white crush and saturation and intensity (especially of the green primary) shows the major issues. Worst, it is obvious in daily use all the time.
I probably will end up sending this second Nexus 7 back as well and buy something with a half-decent visual experience.

I already have PRISM disabled. It helps a tiny bit but does not begin to solve the problem at all. Gamma, white crush, green saturation and intensity, contrast etc. still looks like something from 5+ years ago.
And there are a billion threads about this on the internet. I wish Google would take it serious, but...

I don't know if I go lucky but when I went to safe mode and turn my device of overnight then in the morning I no longer experience this problem. Note I experienced your problem for 3 months and just yesterday the issue was resolved simply by doing what I stated. Good luck let me know what happens

I know its only been out for a day and almost no one has this thing but what problems have you noticed with this device? Just want to watch out for particular stuff when buying this device (dead pixel, static during call, etc.). Please post things that you've seen with this device

I agree^
I'm not a big fan of their end of call screen but other than that, so far so good
I don't want to make this seem like it's perfect but to date I only have one complaint with mine. It gets real hot at times during what I deem normal usage. But it occurs sporadically so I'm not overly concerned yet.
XDA Mobile
I've seen some complaints about dead pixels and what not but its so hard to find one of these.

Every phone I've had the auto-brightness sucked. I turn it off immediately.
I'm seeing ink type blotches at night (on certain areas of the screen) when the backlight is turned down low, Screen Filter is on and NewsRob is in "night" mode.
Daytime use is fine and blacks are blotch free.
I'm deciding if I should return the phone, but am pretty sure that a replacement would have a similar defect. I'm thinking I'll just keep it.
Coming from an HTC Amaze (expensive mistake, but developers did an amazing job) and prior to that, a Vibrant, I can already tell that this phone is a nice piece of work.

sounds like you are having that pixel issue. people here are saying in a dark room that pixels will show lines or something while the screen is black. if you are experiencing this, then just return the phone because its a screen defect.
I have been suffering from some serious network slowdowns with full 4g signal bars. Both while driving and stationary in places where my vibrant had no issues at all. Speed tests have shown max download speeds of 50kbps and up of about 160. The issue occurred before I rooted it. I regret rooting it now and will wait to unroot it safely before nagging t-mobile about it.
Has anybody else noticed this behavior?

I dont have a gs3 yet but with most Samsungs if you turn off the autobrightness you can manually control it by sliding your finger along the status bar. This can lead to some pretty dramatic battery savings if you keep it dim unless you need to raise it.

Perhaps they're reframing or upgrading the cell towers I'm most worried about the screen. There's so way to get a replacement if I get my hands on one.

I was able to get my phone on Wednesday, and I used it all Wednesday night, Thursday & Friday with S-Voice working sporadically. It would get what I said right, but would not respond? Then after 10-20 different commands, it would start trying to carry them all out & would get all jumbled? I did a factory reset this morning & intentionally used it for anything possible all day. It carried out almost every action flawlessly on the first attempt. I'm in my vehicle a lot, so I'm a heavy voice command user, and I've always used vlingo in the past with good results. I don't know if anyone else had this problem, but I think it was some type of network error. Maybe it's linked to a server & there was a problem tied into that? All is well now though, and since it's functioning properly, I took the plunge into root!

Nexus 7 Backlight Flicker?

Does anyone else have this problem with their nexus 7? I just got my nexus 7 today but I noticed that the backlight seems to flicker randomly
It doesn't look like much in the video but it is very noticeable and gets annoying when you're reading an ebook like i was.. Here's a video showing the problem.(It's near the end)
VIDEO LINK: h**p://db.tt/28eD0NLk (It happens around 9 second in) (change ** into tt)
For whatever reason this forum would not post a video link to show the problem.. for those who wants to know what it looks like please PM me..
But basically the screen flickers randomly ..
Is this a software problem? Should I go back and get it exchanged?

I havn't tried it yet..do we know if it's a hardware problem or software?
I just got it today so I can still return it if it turns out to be hardware
We really dunno at this point, but we are speculating software since both HTC One X and TF300 had similar problems and were fixed with firmware updates. Also someone switched it three times and all of them had this issue. Also try to run the screen in a pitch black room and tell me if the screen flicker is there. I may have a theory but need some other people to see if their units are behaving the same way as mine.
You can still post the link when you alter it a bit, insert a few *** into it, for example.
I turned mine on as soon as I got hold of it, no flicker, managed to go through and set up things, powered off and left to charged.
Coming back to it the screen would appear to turn on and off randomly, I thought it could be an app controlling a proximity sensor (I have one on my phone and I was EXTREMELY tired!), when I took it into the light there was no change.
I found that shaking it would help it flicker on and off at all intervals but didn't fix it. In the end I just started pushing random areas on the back, just before the issue went away I pressed around the bottom left quarter of mine and haven't had an issue since!
Glad I wasn't the only one with the problem though and would love to actually find out what it was.
Hope this helps!

Try this video,
h**p://dl.dropbox.com/u/13153603/Videos/VID_20120715_100253.mp4
it is using google map and you can see the constant flickering.. It doesn't look very severe in the video but it is actually very noticeable and annoying
I have the same issue with mine. It only seems noticeable when I have the brightness set to the lowest setting and on a page that is predominately white. I don't think it's the proximity sensor though, because it happens both when I set it manually to the lowest setting and when I'm in the dark and the tablet sets the brightness all the way down itself. Hope the next update fixed this, because it's really annoying!

I first noticed this flicker in a darkened room, so yes, it is definitely something going on. I'll try disabling auto-brightness to see if that matters.

I can attest that the flicker is ever present in a pitch black room as well.
Like this?
There are a few videos on youtube, but i cant post links but if you do a search you can find it
I noticed a flickering in chrome yesterday. But only in chrome and only while the page is rendering after it fully renders no more flickering.
Everyone turn off wifi and I guarantee it will go away. It happens when using wifi which makes it hard to believe that a software update can fix it.

Does anyone else have a misaligned touch screen?

Is anyone else having a slight misalignment on the touch screen?
For me touch is shifted about a millimeter or two to the right.
I've checked on both my N4 and my sister's N4 and both of us seem to be having this slight misalignment.
Both of us have REV 11 N4's. One was obtained through T-Mobile in January, the other was obtained through Google Play just last month.
I've checked on a few roms. I've tried CM, PA, and Stock with a multitude of different kernels (Franco, Faux, Trinity, CM, and stock).
To check:
1. Enable "Show touches" under the Developer menu.
2. Touch a part of the screen where you'll be able to see the touch bubble and hold it there.
3. Look at the screen at angle to see under your finger.
It's not a big deal, just something I've noticed when I had difficulty trying to use PIE on the left side of the screen. Although, I still would love to be able to get the screen recalibrated to have more accurate touch sensitivity to eliminate the difficulty that I have with CM's PIE.
Another question: Is anyone aware of any LG diagnostic tool to calibrate the screen? I remember back on the HTC sensation there was a file that you could load through HBOOT and get your screen calibrated from there.
Photo attached.
Oh wow I never noticed this , I have the same thing, never really had problems with it
Btw I have an older model , so its not just a Rev11 thing

Just tested and confirmed, pretty significant misalignment by about 1 cm, which is a LOT when you're talking about a <5" touch screen..
My next thought is, is this a software issue?
We need more people to test and confirm. But I believe that is what we will find. Software issue.

Screen flickering in direct sunlight?

Hello,
I picked up my GS4 about a week ago but haven't really used it in direct sunlight until today. I was outside, and the sun was shining brightly on the screen. Home screen was fine, and darker images were ok, but if I were to go to an app with a primarily white background, or open up something which used the keyboard (texting) the screen would flicker pretty noticeably. Brightness is all the way up, and auto tone was off.
Has anyone else seen this?
yup this is normal esp when using the keyboard.
Im not sure if it will be fixed.

I guess my question is, is this a hardware issue with many GS4's or a minority. I came across a thread on the Tmobile GS4 forum where people were experiencing it, but it seems not everyone is.

Its a hardware thing, but also its only in touchwiz so a developer might be able to turn it off so to speak.
It adjusts the color and tone no matter what to save the display from overheating and or burning in...
Does it a lot and I notice it cause im weird about those kinds of things.
If you use CM 10.1 or AOKP its gone.
ive made some progress with the RGB light meter on this; hoping a friend can write up some code so we can test out a 'smoothed out' transition and sampling rate and one that is sped up, averaged faster, but will take up more CPU and RAM and battery but more accurate.
here is another thread regarding it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280715
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284726
Maybe if someone who is using CM10 or AOKP could test it to see if it is a software issues and not a hardware issue?
edit: slade and jet replied while I was writing this...thanks for the info. looks like it is touchwiz related.
edit2: just went out in the sun again to test a lot of different options in the display settings (which none worked) but is seems it is only happening when the keyboard is enabled. I am using swiftkey.
yeah TW and that sensor communicate; i believe the sensor itself probably works better ALONE, but TW changes it and throttles it for either battery or screen safety.
It is always dependent on what is being pulled up on the screen, though it can be mitigated quite a bit if you disable all power saving and screen auto features, and leave brightness under 80% or so.
yea anything under 80% in direct sun is basically black. all power saving and screen auto modes were disabled. i covered up all of the sensors too and it still flickered....

Not just a sensor thing per-say.
It's hard to explain, they most likely did it because they didn't want the amoled to burn in.
Its the same reason why the brightness goes up another 34% or so on auto above the max brightness. Only uses it when needed to save the screen and battery.
Does it on youtube too btw, bring up a video on wide screen then tap it and you'll see the drastic color shift
I noticed this thing when I got my phone also. I thought I was just imagining it but I guess it's an actual problem

Have you got purple/pink tint?

Hi guys,
So I literally got my Galaxy Note 3 two days ago (Snapdragon 800) and the first thing I noticed after I turned it on was the dreaded purple to pink hue that invades certain colours on the screen.
The issue is easiest to see on the Holo pop-ups. I think there is one for authorising Google location on start up and when you log into your Google account. It's easiest to see at night; I have my phone set to auto brightness, but set on any level it is noticeable.
Not a major issue for me, and I won't be taking my phone because of it. Just thought I would give everyone a heads up about it. The majority of people that have it will have probably not even noticed!
