Don't buy the Samsung Galaxy S III (yet) see my screen - Galaxy S III General

This Software is still full of bugs.
The screen below (sry is dutch) shows a screenshot of my Galaxy SII and my Galaxy SIII.
Both run Android ICS
Both have about the same apps installed.
but my SII has 458 MB of free ram and my SIII only 89 MB free ram.
This causes a lot of crashes with the touchwizz.
For a phone costing more then a regular laptop I find this very disappointing.

Might be some of the apps are causing the phone to crash. How was the phone prior to you downloading those apps?

So you are saying not to buy a S3 yet because you are having issues with it? Sorry to hear you are having issues with yours but mine works great! I don't have any issues like you & maybe you should start researching on rooting & using custom ROMs.
Since you didn't specify if you are using a custom ROM or stock, I'm going to assume you are using stock. When I was running stock, I didn't have issues as you either.
Don't cry wolf!

I call complete BS on this whole topic. They are not running nearly the same kind of identical software and the SGS3 has ran great in my hands compared to my Skyrocket.
There are plenty of SGSII vs SGS3 videos and articles on the internet. Don't let this topic discourage you. Do your research.
On my homescreen I have Beautiful Clock widget, FOlder organizer, 5 folders full of apps, Google voice widget, Gmail widget, flip board, pulse, active apps widget, S Calendar widget, Music widget, Negative colors, assentive light, google search with a live wallpaper (Captain America).
I don't have any lag issues and I haven't noticed any reload issues. Maybe because I sold my Skyrocket and used my Captivate for a long time and the homescreen might be loading way too fast to even notice a reload, but from what I see I have experienced such problems.

Already a few topics on this and tips on how to make the most of the RAM you have.

LOL! Dont buy a pentium pc (yet). My 8086 is less buggy and more reliable. Same goes for my 1988 Ford Fiesta compared to the new new 3 series BM.

That image is showing that your Galaxy S III actually has less usable ram than the Galaxy S II.
I'm assuming your Galaxy S II has a custom kernel, with extra RAM tweaks and more ram allocated from somewhere, no?
Actually, I'd pretty much bet money that it does.
Want a clean comparison? Flash your SGSII to stock, and re-check your RAM
EDIT: Also the reason for the SGSIII having less free ram is because more apps are currently running. Whereas it's clear that your SGSII has less apps running.

... iv also read before that the more RAM being used, the better - better to have the RAM utilised than not with Android OS.

Well I get 2gb or ram.. can I still buy it? Lol

It's nothing no one can say about this phone that will stop me from buying it. I don't care if you get instant diarrhea by touching it. I'll buy it along with some Depends.

This is Android/Linux not Windows empty RAM is wasted RAM !!

I can confirm this is nonsense, not only does my s3 outperform my s2, the day i got it my boss promoted me at work, i won a new car in a lucky draw compettition and a supermodel gave me her number after i saved her dog from being run over by a car, we are now dating. So yes, the s3 has its advantages.

Hey, windows got better at this with 7 and, I assume, 8. Microsoft seems to be embracing this ideal.

May I be so bold to suggest that you should not buy a house. It could burn down. They have not yet find a solution to build a house that is fire proof.
Also..do not stay inside a house. you could get killed from fumes, pollutants and worst, from the house falling on you!
What about the car you drive? You might get a bad tire, brakes not working, engine exploding, etc.
I guess and I hope you get my point! If not....you need help..and badly!

lol, this is actually a pretty big computer shop here in switzerland. I buy a lot of stuff there. The specs are not to be taken serious and they are subject to change. I guess they just put it up there because they are pretty sure that there will be a SGS III.
Think about the battery life if those were the specs..

Hahaha, great...I guess we can compare the ''mystical" waiting for something like GB 2.3.4,ICS is a religious waiting for some...also the ranting over phones and OS's is sometimes more fun to watch than the religious ranting
As for the S3 specs, two cents:
- we're all gonna have the option to get a Sammy official gear a lead acid carry on bag to get a decent battery life. AOS is huge on 2 [email protected] GHz, just imagine on a quad [email protected] 2.0.....
- who the hell needs a quad core? multicores were developed with performance in mind, BUT also in order to SAVE power...exactly the opposite behavior on SGS2...WTF? they can't optimize the GB for two cores, what's next: the phone that makes the party as a grill replacement device?
PS. I forgot, this is a "some devs" directed question: WITH 4 CORES, 3 SECS WAKE-UP LAG SHOULD BE REGARDED AS ACCEPTABLE, RIGHT?

Even worse thats what you have left for apps and games, as by default these cannot be saved to the memory card. This phone should never have been released in 16gb with so little memory. 32gb should be the minimum.

still wondering why this is a surprise to people. this is getting ridiculous.
I'm probably not even going to get it because of this stupid decision to only have a 16GB version. I don't know what the hell I'm going to do now, my X2 is all but useless and I need to buy a phone off contract to keep my unlimited data. I'm not spending $500+ on a phone from months and months ago, so I guess I have to wait until the next "big" thing comes out. Joy.
At first I was just mad that Verizon was taking a month longer than everyone else, but as usual, things can always be (and in this case, are) worse.
My international unlocked 9500 showed 9 available on the phone but when looking at in on the pc the number was actually in the upper 8s, don't recall what it was exactly. After I used Ti to install the 91 user apps I had backed up 2.4 gigs of that was consumed with 6.6 remaining. Since I always send my photos out to SD and this is my entire collection of apps I obviously have enough room as I use the phone. I cant speak for anyone else but it seems to me that most people with the exception of gamers who have a number of large games they want to keep on the phone at all times will be ok since I would be able to install somewhere toward 200 more typical apps without running out of space.
This is not to say I don't agree with the fact that 16 gigs is now becoming just enough and will not meet some users needs. If the storage were not expandable I would not be able to carry the payload of data I carry. This of course would be true even if it were 32 gigs because I now use my phone as my mp3 player as well and I have my entire library on it. I actually prefer having this out on removeable storage anyways though because I hung up my ipod years ago and just move my music on the card from phone to phone along with the pictures and some other data that I carry with me for work.
And no, my phone did not pick up LTE when I was down in Seattle, I do not have it in my area though and it is not even on AT&Ts roadmap yet, if I did I would have likely went with the snapdragon.

If you have the Octa version, several reviews of that version state the LTE function is on the chip, but disabled.
Yeah I read such myself and yet no one has confirmed it which at this point is surprising because there are now many out there and even if it should be so there is no surety that it will ever be working thanks to the smart gents here. Best IMO to leave the gate with the horse that has LTE aboard if you are in an LTE area and want to make use of it. This one for now doesn't have it and a rumor that may or may not be true isn't something I would hang my hat on.

UNDER 9GBs AVAILABLE on the S4
SAMSUNG'S TAKE ON LOW MEMORY IS B.S.
Samsung can go on the DEFENSIVE all they want and this DOES NOT SOLVE the problem; A 16gb phone with under 8gb available to the consumer.
Its not an excuse stating that a lot of the memory is taking up by all the bells and whistles which a lot of us will not use. What happens in the future when Samsung upgrades their software more space will be taken up. A lot of people suggest using a micro SD card. THIS IS ONLY GOOD FOR MEDIA FILES AND DOCUMENTS. NOT GAMES.
As a consumer we are paying for 16 GBs and getting roughly half.
I was a Samsung Customer and owned the S1/2/3 but I WILL NOT CONSIDER THE S4 or the NOTE 3 until Samsung comes out with 32GBs.
Until we all stand up and tell Samsung how we feel they will keep on pulling this crap on us.
Thanks

Finally.
Samsung S4 will be featuring on BBC Watchdog over its memory claims. Details http://gavinsgadgets.wordpress.com/2...he-samsung-s4/
samsung has f*ck with this problem. it's too bad for them. they lost me as 1 customer out of 400+million customer cause of this storage.
my galaxy s 4 is the last galaxy after s2, note, s3, note 2 now s4 ( should be my last one )
please use foldermount for some big games. work great.
All they had to do was be more transparent. Also be honest about the apps and caches having to be installed to internal memory. Not everyone wants to root, and I cant because of certain apps that wont work if rooted.
I too have had the Note, S3, Note 2 and 4 other Samsung phones. This is the first time I am left a little disappointed.
Where is all my storage!?!?!
Hey guys,
So my phone says "Storage Space Running Out" but I just check and I am not using anymore than 3GB of the 8.9GB available. I took a screen shot and attached it here. Can someone help?

Ok ?
Wait .. Isn't that a good thing , no bloat - ware ...
A couple of months back Samsung signed an agreement with Google that they will try to reduce the modifications to the stock Android experience
I think this is the result of that agreement.
The only 4.4 ROM out right now is for the Columbian Wi-Fi version. It could be the same ROM as for other markets or it may not be. Magazine UX is still on the N10.1-14 microsite where it first appeared after the Pro's started shipping. It may mean something or it may not.
http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/2014galaxynote10.1/feature.html
If it does end up permanently missing I won't be too upset. When M-UX was first shown at CES I thought it was cool because there were a ton of widgets and you could create tiles for any installed app. In and of itself it could have been a potential alternate UI. What was released with the Pro's was completely neutered. From three home pages with one being the main home screen it's been reduced to one tagged on at the end of the traditional TW home pages. Most of the widgets left are just modular pieces of My Magazine which means it went from being a hidden pull-up to mandatorily consuming a home page that could be used for other things instead. I use all my home pages so wasn't keen on giving one up to M-UX in its current state. It's not even called Magazine UX anymore. It's now "Content Home."
There is a downside. I was kind of hoping the N10.1-14 would have been made s/w compatible with the Pro's to increase the frequency of updates received. If M-UX and other UI-based features from the Pro's have been left out we'll end up being an odd duck and 4.4 might be the last major update we see. It certainly won't help update timing, that's for sure.
Time will tell...

If I wanted AOSP I wouldn't have spent what I did on a tablet that has more added on top of Android than any other device on the planet. You'll find this shocking but some folks actually do use the N10.1-14 to get work done and a lot of that "bloated crap" is what makes that possible.
Actually I wasn't talking to you hammer, it was for the op.

My bad. But this is a mixed forum. 1/3 actually use the N10.1-14 as a creation/productivity device as Samsung intended. 1/3 bought if for the high-end h/w, stripped it bare s/w wise, and I guess use it primarily for consumption and gaming. The other 1/3 are somewhere in between. What pleases one group pisses the other off. To each their own.
S Pen and s/w combined are more important to Note purchasers than the h/w. Even the Samsung brand is more important than h/w. Maybe not on XDA but for the rest of the masses that make up 95+% of Note sales. TW won't win any design awards but it does provide a level of functionality, especially on the Note's, that makes having it a positive; at least for me.

We actually agree. Before M-UX got neutered I was cautiously excited. Mostly for the interactive widgets that could be potential productivity boosters and getting more content on each page. As it stands now it's just a space wasting news feed. The Pro's also lost Samsung Hub which we'll retain. Samsung's videos can be stored on external SD and played back in Pop-up-play which is great for long trips.

The version of M-UX in the N12 is crippled like described above. Here's a thread from the N12 forum that discusses what's missing along with a kind of schizophrenic discussion on how to (theoretically) get the missing components back. People in the N12 forum are trying to figure out how to disable/remove M-UX so they can get a normal home page back. The grass is always greener...

Hancom Office
The only thing I'm hoping for when the 4.4 is eleased for U.S. is the Hancom Office software. Won't loose any sleep if they exclude the Magazine UX. I had a Pro 8.4 and a Note 12.2(to big) and really didn't like it.
I have the note 12.2 and I dont use magazine ux. Actually bought nova prime finally for it. Like barry said if it had been released like it was at ces I would have loved it. But as it is it is nuetered and boring. It is still pretty sexy looking imo.

make free RAM space

Free RAM is wasted RAM...
Do you have any problems with multitasking, app reloading etc.? If not, let Android take care of the usage and ignore the RAM bar.
I am coming from the S3 with 1GB RAM, where 500Mb were constantly in use. Frequent app reloads included.
Now that I have the Note 4, I can switch as much as I want without reloads. I'm loving it! My RAM is currently 2.4/2.7 GB in use, but who cares

Note 4 is pretty awful at multitasking, although it works, because there is no RAM, free or not, to multitask with.
You need free Ram so that when you load a new app, an old one isn't destroyed.

What is the best way to make free RAM space. Looks 2/2.77GB is used for me using/running only Lollipop. Does the OS using that all? Thinking to clear all bloatwares if somebody could tell me what is all safe to clear. Thanks

Go to application manager / running .
Find apps which you dont use but they running in background (messengers, music players some other) and shut them down manually. Some will restart but some won't. Find offensive apps and check if you can turn them off - not all of them can be turned off in application manager. That can be achieved on not rooted device. If you rooted you can use many applications to freeze and prevent offensive apps from automatic start

Note 4 is pretty awful at multitasking, although it works, because there is no RAM, free or not, to multitask with.
You need free Ram so that when you load a new app, an old one isn't destroyed.

Didn't quite understand what you meant here
Hi guys,
Same thing here.
Over 2gb in use with apparently no apps running. So, is this normal?
Thanks

Free ram is wasted ram.
For the most part (on smart phones running android) that saying is very true. Free ram is wasted ram. So it's not a regurgitation as one guy said...and almost every developer here would likely agree to that saying

Early 5.1.1 review by sammobile

This is why to root and install custom recovery. As soon as somebody puts up we can all have it. Instead of waiting for if ever carriers want to etc.

Is just me or that A-Z on the app drawer is already present? I have it on my phone. T-Mobile
On some variants it already exists. Mine's not one of them (SM-G920F).
Options for removal of the S-Finder and Quick Connect buttons. Finally, without a build.prop workaround.
No mention of ram/memory management fix.
Reassuring.
My app drawer is A-Z the EU unbranded does that if you want to flash it, ....XEU
I literally don't know what sfinder and quick connect are. putting them in the way of everybody doesn't make people press them.
Yes what is going on with the memory? too many apps stay and causes a crash eventually music stops playing doesn't look for next chapter of audiobook. But everything reloads whenever you go back. The worst of both worlds.

It's a feature of 5.1.1, do people not understand its a general android problem on 5.0.x, not just Samsung, and 5.1.1 on any device will fix those problems.
The only thing I care about... Will the HORRIBLE RAM management issue finally be solved as promised by Sammy?? It is unacceptable that a 2015 flagship (especially with the specs of the S6) can't hold more than 3-4 apps in memory!!

Ram management is S6 specific. Memory leak is Android 5.0 specific. The S6 has both.

Exactly color fade leak it's not as bad as the worse memory management in s6 rom's.
So.. If they have and installed it - why is it not on xda yet ?
Seriously why isn't it?
Double seriously - I don't think they're running the old tmobile-galaxy-s6-edge leak either from their findings.

Probably they got hands on an internal test version with lots of watermarks on it.
Sammobile just replied ti my question about ram management. It's still bad...

I was thinking on purchase the Galaxy S6 Edge after they fix the RAM Managment, but it seems that samsung is going to left all users with his poorly multitasking. Yes, it is an early build, but coming from samsung Idk what hope. It seems the only good multitasking phones now are the HTC M9, LG G4, Zenfone 2 and iPhone 6/6+ (Yes, iOS doesn´t have "true multitasking", but who cares about when you can have a good amount of apps in background without one closing for itself). Now Idk if wait or purchase some of the other phones

You're right, to have a 3GB smartphone and can't use multitasking it's ridicolous. Why the didn't put 1GB of RAM at this point

unfortunately it is true
I'm wondering if this ram management issue is really an issue or an exaggeration that is subjective. I mean I've had my s6 since last week. I can multitasking and switch between apps just fine according to my usage. Also it's a pretty release ...if it really is an issue at be it's something that would be ironed out by release

Same, I have no issues multitasking or with apps closing on their own
Try to use tapatalk, goto your desired forum and open 2 or 3 more apps. This will probably reset tapatalk. Heck, I've used feedly > Chrome > screenshot > back to feedly and feedly would open from a cold start.
Past weekend my gf was taking down notes in church on Samsung memo - left the app and came back to find all her notes erased because the app closed. Ridiculous.
It's just not pleasant to use. And to say the s6e's camera is good is still only about 2~5% of daily usage.

It is a REAL issue for a High End ~$1000 phone with 3GB of RAM that in reality appears to have less than 1GB. I mean, with 3GB you don´t even mind about if the apps are going to get killed or not, it is the last thing you hope for a device like this.
