[FIX] Proper Fastdormancy settings for AT&T/MediaNet (US) - Galaxy S III General

If you had an unlocked GT-I9100 in the States and you were around during the entire FastDormancy fiasco with the first few stock ROMs, then you'll know where I'm heading with this.
After getting my SGS3, I noticed I was getting consistently slower speeds as well as notable battery drain when only on cellular data. While there were some knuckleheads on here that kept telling me to "use the phone APN" (even though I'm on AT&T's Medianet and CANNOT use the phone APN), I started digging into the SGS3 Fastdormancy settings as I knew from experience that could impact both download speed and battery life.
Not too long after, I realized that the UK version of the GT-I9300 does not have ANY Fastdormancy data for AT&T medianet. So, I added them in, and now, I'm pulling consistent 5Mbps downloads vs not being able to break 3Mbps previously.
(Only time will tell on battery life. Given most of the battery life complaints have come from US users while there are tons of great battery life claims from international users, I highly suspect this might be the root cause as well.)
Things you'll need:
1) SQLite Editor
2) Root Explorer
Steps:
1) Under Root Explorer, go to /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases
2) Select nwk_info.db and choose to open with SQLite Editor
3) Click on carriers:
A. First, notice there is NO AT&T Medianet setting and the last _id number.
B. Menu button -> New Record
C. Enter in:
a. _id: last _id number + 1 (increment by 1, next in sequence)
b. name: Cingular 410
c. numeric: 310410
d. mcc: 310
e. mnc: 410
f. apn: wap.cingular
g. user: [email protected]
h. server: cingulargprs.com
i. password: CINGULAR1
j. mmsproxy: wireless.cingular.com
k. mmsc: http://mmsc.cingular.com
l. authtype: -1
m. type: default,mms,supl
n. protocol: IP
o. roaming_protocol: IP
p. carrier_enabled: 1
q. bearer: 0
r. nwkname: Cingular 410
s. preferred: 0
t. editable: 0
(ALL OTHER FIELDS ARE BLANK.)
D. Click Save
E. Back button
4) Click on dormpolicy:
A. Again, note there is nothing for AT&T Medianet
B. Create a new record (just like above), enter in:
a. plmn: 310410
b. nwkname: Cingular 410
c. lcdonfdtime: 0
d. lcdofffdtime: 20
(ALL OTHER FIELDS ARE BLANK.)
C. Click Save
D. Back button
5) Click on nwkinfo:
A. Again, note there is nothing for AT&T Medianet
B. Create a new record (just like above), enter in:
a. plmn: 310410
b. nwkname: Cingular 410
c. dormancy: on
d. mtu: 1500
(ALL OTHER FIELDS ARE BLANK.)
C. Click Save
D. Back all the way out
6) Reboot the phone, you should be good to go.
Proof: Screenshot below. Tested from the exact same location each time (my desk at work) with a GT-I9100 sitting right next to the GT-I9300. After putting in the proper settings, the SGS3 is neck and neck with the SGS2 now.
Hope this helps others seeing network speed issues on AT&T Medianet, thanks for looking!

How is it working after a few days?

Sounds good, I'm going to try this. Some things to add to your guide.
1. Mention to others to make a backup of the DB file.
2. Also mention an alternative method to perform this task by copying it over to a computer and using a editor on windows to save some money. Cheers.

I'm already getting speeds between 3-11Mbps. (Average 5) with factory settings. (shrug)
Hopefully this helps someone though.

You're hitting 11Mbps on Medianet? I thought it was capped at around 7-8Mbps?

As far as I know there is no speed limit on MediaNet. But, next time I am in that area, I will try to grab a screenshot.

That'd be interesting to see, I do get serious throttling once I hit 7.5Mbps. No complaints though, perfectly content with that speed.

Last question to your guide. What did you do in the APN settings finally? Just made one called phone and left it all blank?

Nope, leave APN alone... can't use "phone" if on Medianet.

Reporting in. Note that the internet at my house sucks. I live a few miles away from the boarder of Los Angeles.
Previous Speed test:
1. 1813/1083
2. 127/132
3. 834/319
After Proper Settings:
1. 3314/1013
2. 1121/145
3. 392/133
These were 3 random speed test. It seems like it has helped a little bit if not a lot. Will have to test it more when I'm in the OC area or other parts of LA. Anyways, here is the SQLITE file for others if they want to just copy and paste it in. Can you put it in the op? Thank you!

I'm getting 6 to 7 mbps without any modifications by default settings.
I'll try your method and will let you know.
Mind if I link your thread in my thread (look at my signature)?

I'm not sure, but I could not for the life of me get my SGS3 above 2.x Mbps running Speedtest right next to my old GT-I9100. I fiddled a bit with the Fastdormancy settings before, so when I went to take a look, there wasn't even a record of AT&T Medianet (Cingular 410) in the SGS3.
At the end of the day, I can't say it's the cure all for the slow speed issue, but it did fix mine for sure. And, it can't hurt to have the proper settings in your nwkinfo.db, right?
And of course not, link away bud!

Just for giggles, I went ahead an applied this fix. No major change in speeds but I did notice one thing.
Cell standby usage has dropped considerably.
I wonder if having your carrier settings on that database file has something to do with it??
My phone has just been sitting here for almost 2 hours and Cell Standby is only at 16%, while screen is at 62%.
Any thoughts???

Yep, this fix addressed the improper FastDormancy implementation on the earlier stock ROMs for the SGS2 GT-I9100 where it was a major culprit for battery drain. Make no mistake of it... even though all these knuckleheads on here claim "FastDormancy should be turned off for AT&T," AT&T's network in the US DOES support FastDormancy. And, in theory, FastDormancy should improve battery life if properly implemented, so why you would want to turn that off completely is a mystery to me.
However, what I've noticed is that these earlier stock ROMs for these UK devices simply do not have the right FastDormancy settings for the US networks (yet). While the later ROMs did seem to address this, I'm not going to sit around for them to include the proper AT&T Medianet settings when I can just do it quickly myself.
Back to the original topic, FastDormancy does seem to impact speeds as well, so my original purpose for this hack was primarily for that. But, I would not be surprised one bit if it helped to reduce wakelocks and improve battery life overall on AT&T Medianet.
Glad it helped!

I have something to discuss. I noticed that with this method there comes 2 methods to register with a Network now in here.
Settings > Wireless and Networks > More Settings > Mobile Networks > Network Operators.
The first being the default I believe and the second being the settings we inputted.
When I select the second AT&T it does not work. I don't know if there was somethign wrong with the settings or not or even if this is affected by what we did here. But I think this might have all beena placebo or coincidence. Not sure yet. Any answers?

I'm only getting one AT&T in that list. Not sure why you are seeing two unless you are picking up another AT&T tower.

Hmmmm, yeah it's weird... I am still picking up to. I'm in the LA county. Anyone else seeing the same?

I am on Straight Talk using one of their ATT Sims. Do I just use the settings they gave me for my APN in here?

Just tried this. Speeds were ~4.5 down before the rest at my house, and about the same after. I will be keeping a close eye on battery usage and report back. I used the Zip file attached.

Call your provider and ask for them to push the network settings. They'll have you check the APN settings and likely do a battery pull.
I don't know exactly what it is that they do, but it's some sort of re-provisioning by the sound of it. I've had to call in and have this done and it's worked like a charm. It's worth a shot.
seems like signal problem try again with your apn and make sure its right. and use "default" instead "Default" sometimes some keyboards capitalize the first letter.
re check APN its right i guess its the problem.
did you freeze any service? or do something weird??? try a backup with thenfar recovery and flash again SBF and check if works, maybe you delete or freeze a service, after that if still not working try replace SIM card to see if this solve the problem.
Try these apn settings:
apn: pps

They don't push the APN but they can usually reset the network connection from their end. It's industry jargon my old provider had used. Not sure what it alludes to but it definitely helps.
Sorry I don't have the appropriate term.

Did you go to "Data Manager"
then choose "Data Delivery"
make sure "Data Roaming" is turned on.
Without it, my Atrix will not connect to the internet either.
This is the solution, I think.
I realize you are half-way around the world from me, but I thought I would share with you what I am experiencing right now in northern Michigan.
I got my Atrix about 2 weeks ago and had absolutely no problems with it until last Friday, when I suddenly would get only Edge connectivity. My HSPA+ was gone. This lasted all Friday night. I had placed Gingerblur on my phone at roughly the same time this began to happen, so I thought this might be the issue. But after talking to some folks on he, I was informed that Gingerblur didn't change the radios. So, I flashed back to SBF 1.2.6 and reloaded my Atrix to 1.5.7, but I still got only Edge service.
On Saturday, I did see HSPA+ for a while, but speeds were slooooow. My buddy has a iPhone 3GS and an iPad 3G. Both of those were connecting at 3G and were pulling good speeds. My phone would only get Edge. (BTW, where I am at, we have only 3G, not officially HSPA+).
Yesterday, I spent an hour on the phone with AT&T tech support and got no-where, so I drove the 20-miles to my AT&T store. When I got there, I found that the in-store Atrix as well as the Inspire 4G were both only connecting at Edge service. So, the issue is not my phone, it is something going on with AT&T in my area.
I was back at the AT&T store today and they have no information to help me, but are talking to engineering to see what is going on. The 4G in-store phones again showed only an Edge connection when I was there today. All of the 3G phones were working great.
I don't know if this is related to your issue, but I thought it was similar enough to say something.

It is really annoying problem tha you are having, mine is more! because there is no net at all!
thanks for sharing your problems with us
I could really use that $100 :/ when you bought the phone did you activate it for the first time in the USA? In the IRC chat, a guy named shadowfalx has the exact same problem and the only difference between his phone running on the softbank JP network (with broken data) and mine running on Vodafone Australia (with working H+) is that he activated his phone for the first time in the USA with an AT&T SIM card, while I used a vodafone SIM in Austraila. I'm not sure about the technics but he thinks it has something to do with the SID being screwed over. I would get in contact with the person/place that sold you the phone and ask for a replacement and when/if you do get a replacement, ask specifically for it not to be turned on ever before, as you will have to turn it on for the first time with your ZAIN KW SIM card inserted.
Hope this helps, shadowfalx will have his replacement in a few days, we'll know for sure if thats the problem when he gets his new one and activates it in Japan not in the US
- DarkRyoushii
Out of curiosity, have you tried another SIM?
I fired off an email to a buddy in KW and had him compare his setting to the settings listed on their website. The only difference was
APN Type = default,spul
where you listed
APN Type= default
He is using a Nexus one not an Atrix but it is an Android.
try this do a factory reset to make sure all your setting are correct and the previous owner didnt uninstall something he shouldnt have, heres how. With the phone off, hold the Volume Down button while pressing Power. A Fastboot screen should appear. Press Volume Down to navigate to the Android Recovery selection. Press Volume Up. A yellow triangle and Android logo will appear. Tap the bottom-right corner of the screen until a menu appears. Tap wipe data/factory reset then tap OK. Tap Yes then OK. it will take a minute or so for the factory reset then hit ok when done. then during the motoblur sign in press settings button and then select APN to enter a new one. try these and good luck

[GUIDE] Getting your unlocked Note fully functional on Straight Talk (including MMS)

Disclaimer at the bottom of the post... *
Updated for ICS / Ice Cream Sandwich - tentative settings, please confirm if these work for you. (Look for additional red text.)
Thank you to everyone who took the time to figure all this stuff out! All I did was take some pretty screenshots to make it easier for beginners.
OK, I want to make this short, simple, and thorough. I don't think those things are mutually exclusive.
First, you need an activated Straight Talk SIM card that can be transferred to other phones. **
Put the SIM into your Note, turn it on, and open the system settings. Then tap the following...
Wireless and network > Mobile networks > Access Point Names
The next screen should look something like the attached image #1: "APNs". Tap the Menu button and tap the New APN button. ***
You need to create two APNs. The name you enter in the Name field apparently doesn't matter. I just used "Internet" and "MMS" to avoid confusion. Copy the settings in the two attached image numbers 2: "APN_1" and image number 3: "APN_2". I drew a yellow check mark next to all the entries that I needed to change, I suppose some firmware versions/ROMs/phones may be different. When you're done entering in all the required addresses and stuff, tap the Menu button and tap the Save button.
APN 1...
Name: Internet
APN: att.mvno
The method for setting the "APN type" varies. Choose "internet" if you are given a list of choices, type "default" if you must type it in.
APN type: internet
APN type: default
Typing "default" seems to work on imilka's AOSP ICS v03 ROM for the internet at least, I haven't tried MMS yet. I suspect it will work with other ICS builds as well.
APN 2...
Name: MMS
APN: att.mvno
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
MMS port: 80
APN type: mms
When you save the second APN and you return to the APNs screen: select the radio button on the first APN (see attached image number 4: "Select_APN").
Tap the Back button to return to the Manage network settings screen. Put a check mark into the Use packet data option (see attached image number 5: "Check_use_packet_data"). Shortly after checking that box my phone connected to the network.
Yay you're done! This worked on my phone, I hope it works for y'all too.
* This is for informational purposes only. I am not an expert. Frankly, I don't even know what these settings really do. I simply copied them from other places on the internet (like this thread). There is an app, APN Backup & Restore, that can be used to (gasp!) backup and restore your APN settings, if you're nervous about doing this I suggest you backup your current APN settings before proceeding. It looks like there are other APN settings apps, it's possible one of them is better... I dunno. Personally, I did not use any APN-centric app, though I did have a backup of my whole phone made by Clockwork Mod ROM Manager
** I am no expert, but people on the internet say the only way to get a transferable SIM is to buy a Nokia E71 or a Nokia 6790 from Straight Talk. Check out straighttalk.com, they might be selling a refurbished E71 or 6790 (currently the refurbished 6790 is ~$50 with free overnight shipping). Personally, I left the SIM in my Nokia until the service was activated. I saw someone on the net say that you should switch the SIM back to the Straight Talk phone before calling tech support. I don't know if this is really something you have to do or not. Personally, I'm going to keep the phone around and use it whenever I have to call them.
*** If your screen shows some APNs already I'm afraid I don't know what you should do. I suggest you stop using my guide and see if you can get some expert advice elsewhere. I'm sorry about that!
Nice write-up! I am on ST as well.
A tip for getting a refurbished e71 to show up in the phone options is by starting the process with a zipcode nearish to where you live that is more densely populated, and then just changing the address when you are placing the order. Save some bucks that way.
Also, I believe that the E71 provided by ST is locked to the SIM included with it and will not work with other SIM cards. It is probably best to just hang onto the handset.
I have tried with Fast Dormancy (*#*#9900#*#*) both enabled and disabled and get the same speeds either way (2-3Mbps), so I just leave it disabled since it seems that it could drain the battery more if left enabled.
Thanks!
I forgot I'd seen Fast Dormancy mentioned on the other threads... I'm going to try it with it disabled for a while as well.
... later
Hmmm... disabling it seems to have started causing problems immediately. I connected to the Market and searched for a speed test app. It worked for a little bit, but by the time I had typed "speedtest" into the search bar my internet connection apparently got lost. I tried turning it back on and the internet connection seemed to return.
I am just curious, what sort of speed you getting with the Straight Talk.
I have the go-phone plan and getting these speed :
btw, i have the Fast Dormancy disabled and it work great!

What data plan you have to get those speeds with go phone?
Thanks for the info OP.. I didn't know you needed a special phone for removeable sim card.

I have the 500MB data package for $25 with monthly roll over. I guess any data plan can get my speed with go-phone.
Argh, I wrote out a response but then, being absent-minded, I decided to click a link and lost it. Here's a pic with five speed tests I did. The results are inconsistent, but it doesn't look like they're being throttled or anything to me.
Note the second one on the list. Extremes in both directions. It says 33 kbps upload speed, but I though it hung so I attempted to cancel the test early. I'm not sure if it actually finished, timed out, or if I successfully canceled it.
I'm also using my note with this setup. The only difference I did is that instead of making two separate APN types I just combined everything into one and set the APN type to Internet + MMS. Works fine for me.
Thank you thank you thank you for this.
Going to use my note on Straighttalk also.
Have been using my note on straight talk since day 1, have had a couple days of going 100+mbs of data in a day without any issues
Just like to let you guys know, don't think the grass is greener if you have a tiered data plan on ATT
I have a 2g data plan and out of 142 speed tests mostly at two different locations a mile apart I have had exactly 25 times where my speed was over 1mbps download and the majority of those were at 2am or later when there's nobody on the network. I even called them to ask if they had throttled me because my speeds were so low (I'm in the Melbourne area of Florida btw) and they said no....we just suck...ok they didn't say we just suck but after looking into it I was told yea well in the daytime there's a lot of people on the network which slows things down...Yea really? to below 1 mbps???
So if you're thinking you're missing out on something you're not...that is not until your area gets LTE theeeeeeen you'll be missing out on what is nothing short of phenomenal speed. In the meantime...save ur dough til it's in your area. I'll be going to ST or Go Phone until then myself. It's the principal of the thing too. Why should I pay top dollar for that kind of crappy speed when someone in the city is getting 49mbps dl speed on the same plan I got? While being restricted to 2Gb no less.

I have tested both the combined APN and seperate APN and get better speed with seperate APN.

wow this is on straight talk? I live in downtown seattle and was testing their network and it was like 1.5 down....
If their 3g (hspa+) speeds are the same as straight talk, there isn't any reason to get into an expensive contract.
Can anyone else post their straight talk speeds?
Straight Talk lets you buy just the sim card now so you can save $50 and skip the phone purchase.
great! is there any issues with using strait talk on the note aside from not having 4g speeds? and when do they start throttling your bandwidth? i really would rather transfer my number from tmobile and get a st sim than have to deal with edge speeds on tmobile.
So this is faster than t-mobile right? If so I'm getting it cause I'm on t-mobile now and might as well if its faster and same price
From the Beast : Galaxy Note
sounds like it is faster than normal AT&T HSPA+. From what i've seen, normal AT&T hspa+ speeds are around 1 to 1.5megs..
So if there is no LTE in your city, why have AT&T at all? Buy a phone off contract and pay only $45 a month in cell phone bills..
H+ in my area is around 2-3 during the weekday, and 5-6 meg in the evening.
Is yours not setup correctly to get only 1-2?
I got 4 Down and 2 Up using the settings they sent me with my SIM Only Straight Talk Account.

how is straight talk data service?
i have a question about straight talk's data service. on the internet, it seems like straight talk imposes limitations as to how you can use the data?
are you able to use the internet normally like watching youtube videos etc?
can you tether?
are there things that you cannot do compared to what you can do with other 3g/4g providers?
i ask these questions because i just saw this thread a moment ago, and gave me some hopes to buying an internation version of galaxy note and not have to pay too much money getting a plan with att. (i don't want the att version because of the hardware difference)

SM-N9005 - No 4G LTE.

Hello guys. I have a long story for you, but I am just gonna keep it very short.
I've had trouble with 4G LTE on TWO Galaxy Note 3's.
I got my first one about 4 months ago, then I got a new device about 1 month exactly because of 4G not working.
However, it is still not working.
My first phone was 100% stock, never rooted and never played with. So was my 2nd phone, and LTE still didn't work. However, it's rooted with CM11 nightly with temasek kernel on it right now, and still no 4G LTE.
I've talked a lot with my carrier (Telenor DK, Denmark) and they sent me a new SIM-card, which did not work help with the missing LTE either. I just called them again today and they double checked everything and told me that I was totally ready to go with 4G LTE.
(The location is not the problem as I've been VARIOUS places with no connection to 4G.)
All the network options are as they should be, etc. However there is still NO 4G LTE.
I then started to read on a lot of posts from this forum, and I may have come to the conclusion that my phone has different frequencies or different LTE bands than my country has? I'm not sure, but I THINK that my carrier (Telenor Denmark) uses 800mhz band.
I don't know if Cat4 is some american only standard or so? I'm not sure, I hope you guys can help.
This is what it says on the box: http://i.imgur.com/JLSrR0b.jpg?1
There is also the european certifcation sticker on the front: http://i.imgur.com/jTxqtzS.jpg?1
You won't be able to see it, but it is a shiny/glittering sticker that says "Approved for Nordic Operators" and as you might have guessed, I live in Denmark.
And at last, some screenshots of the phone: http://imgur.com/a/IHs5N - As you can see, LTE and everything is checked.
I'm not really sure what I can do more. I hope you guys have any idea of what the cause of me not being able to have 4G LTE network.
Many thanks!

Thanks for your reply.
I should have mentioned, that I already tried to play with exact these settings, without luck.
However, I did it again since it had been a long time, and sadly again no luck.
The APN settings seems to be correct set up by default.
EDIT: I have a feeling it's because my LTE radio doesn't run the right frequency/mhz. Is there anyway that I can check if that's the problem?
And for clarity, I have never seen the 4G logo on my phone. My connection is 3G / H+ 50/50 of the time.

Telenor Denmark uses 1800Mhz for its LTE network so it should be compatible as you are using a Note 3 N9005 as listed on GSMArena Note 3.

Okay thanks! great to have that out of the way.
Now, I'm just asking out of curiousity.
What does the Cat4 on the box in the LTE section mean? Could it be anything with that?
Does that mean Band 4? .. Because it looks like Telenor uses band 3? Now. I have no idea what I am talking about and if this really matters, but please correct me if I am wrong.
EDIT: Also, my phone has a 4G logo on the back of the slim case you get with it. I've heard some people say that it's only the american models that get these?
It looks like this: http://goo.gl/UUJXCK - It says 4G in the middle where it says Galaxy Note 3 on this one.

I believe Cat 4 is just a hardware standard indicating peak datarates.
Try selecting the mms apn rather than the internet one and see if that changes anything.
I had a similar issue with Telus not receiving internet till i switched from the isp.telus apn to sp.telus apn.
Worth a shot i guess.

Thanks a lot for your help. Well I can't select the Telenor DK MMS like I can select the internet one. If you look at the picture there is a blue check mark at the internet one which the mms one doesn't have. If I click on the MMS one it just takes me to the settings. I hope it makes sense. Thanks.

Oh, ummm.
You could try to edit the internet one to be identical to the mms settings. If anything, you can just revert it back to the internet settings if it doesn't help.

I have tried to do that multiple times without any luck at all.
I will try to do it in a few minutes just in case, however it never seems to help. The only thing that happens is that my mobile connection drops for about 20 seconds then comes back as the usual 3G / H+.
EDIT: I played around with the APN settings again, for about 1 hour, still with no luck.
So I'm stuck here as of now. I've tried everything mentioned in this thread and nothing works.
I am not sure what is wrong. I hope any of you might have more possible solutions for my LTE problem on my SM-N9005.
Thanks.

I'm sure that your APN settings are wrong... they are wrong by default sometimes. 2G and 3G is working for you, right? If yes, than it's the problem with settings. Try to copy APN setting from someone who has a phone with working 4G ( and is the same carrier as you ).

I've been thinking the same. Perhaps I'm doing it wrong or something, because I've tried to change the settings so much. I don't have access to a 4G phone on the same carrier, neither does any of my friend use my carrier (atleast I think so) - so I will do some more internet research.
Again, thanks a lot for your help, friend!
EDIT: I've found some totally different Telenor APN settings than I've ever seen before. I'm not sure if they're old or not, but I'll definitely try now and report back.

Then try to call your carrier service, and request that they tell you all of APN settings. Try every one of them. I had exactly the same problem, they were sending me bad APN settings. They were also telling me that everything is good on their side with network, and that my phone is broken. So don't believe them, you probably know more about technology than 90% of workers there

I don't know if your telco does this but Telstra in Australia will send a system message that will save the correct APN settings into your phone. This can be initiated by you through their internet site, no call center staff to stuff things up... You receive the message like a normal sms but when prompted install and save...
Might be worth a shot to either ask to be sent the settings or see if they do the same on their website... You might be lucky...

It seems like they do not offer such service. However I looked at some APN setup guide on their website, and it is 100% identical to what my APN's look like.
Hmm. As stated before, 3G and HSPDA, HSPDA+ works perfectly. But no 4G/LTE. Never.
I'm sorry for double posting, but I've got some news. (I think.)
So, someone told me that I should try to dial *#*#4636#*#* and put up screenshots of it, so I figured out that I should put them here too.
So when I dailed *#*#4636#*#*, I got to this screen: http://i.imgur.com/nvEQqUF.png
I then chose phone information, and I got here: http://i.imgur.com/TTPAHw5.png - Notice that H+ is working fine.
Then I tried to select LTE only, and this happened: http://imgur.com/eNfl4xk - No signal from LTE at all.
I'm not sure if this is anything new, but I thought I'd show it here too.
Thanks.
EDIT: Okay, so I've made some further investigation and some people tell me that I might have the wrong CSC number for my country. However, I have no idea what that means really. Is it possible for me to "flash" the
correct CSC number onto my phone or something like that?
EDIT: I'm going to flash STOCK Nordic 4.4.2 ROM and solve the issue there, I've heard some talking about I should do that first. I will report back if I find my solution. Thanks.
Hello again.
I haven't really been doing anything to search further, but I am still left with no LTE, the flash of the 4.4.2 stock nordic rom did not help.
Just thought I'd give a little update.

Unlocked G900A on Verizon

Hey guys. I apologize if this has been addressed before. I did try searching, both XDA and the web in general, before posting this. I have a lot of experience with rooting, ROMing, bootloaders, kernels, Odin, etc. Basically anything associated with customizing a phone. Except for swapping between carriers, I've only done that a couple times and it only involved swapping the SIM and changing the APN. So I don't need kid gloves or a lot of explaining with potential solutions, like editing build.prop or flashing something either locally on the phone or through Odin. But anyways... here's my story, along with my thoughts on potential solutions to try (the only reason I haven't tried these solutions yet is because I don't wanna risk messing anything up):
I was given a Galaxy S5 for AT&T (model number G900A) about a week ago. I'm on Verizon and am currently using an S4 (coming from an S3 and Galaxy Nexus. So I've got a good deal of experience with Samsung devices. Although so much has changed between then and now, it's hardly relevant). So obviously the first thing I did was just throw my SIM from my S4 into the S5. Didn't work. SIM was locked (something I've never seen). Oh well, I didn't expect it to be so simple. The S5 was still on KK, so I figured I'd try a custom ROM to see if that affected the SIM lock. It didn't. So I ordered a SIM unlock code (a girl gave it to me who was given it by her ex boyfriend who didn't like the idea of her giving it to a different guy, so he wasn't exactly cooperative with unlocking it. No biggie, $24 was still well worth it). Since then, I've played with it a bit. I'm currently running TMS5 2.0. It's hard to form a complete opinion on a ROM when I don't have data/cell capacity and can only use WiFi. But with the small amount of experience, it's a nice ROM. I got my SIM unlock code this morning thanks to unlockunit.com. The SIM unlock I had purchased was estimated at 1-6 days and I received it in like 23 hours. I'd definitely use them again if anybody is looking for a place. Everything seemed to be going smoothly. Unlock was successful, added the APN settings, but the APN settings wont save. I've rebooted, cleared cache/dalvik, removed/reinstalled SIM, nothing worked. I figured I'd try a new ROM, but wanted to ask for some other opinions too. Also, when I had the thought to try a new ROM, I also thought that maybe a Verizon ROM would work on the Verizon network? But also figured it could not boot too, so I'd ask first.
Anybody have this experience with any solutions? Anybody else have any thoughts/ideas? I'd appreciate any input. Thank you
after hours upon hours of tinkering with it. I've made extremely slight "progress". Since I've been screwing with this all day, a lot of the time I'm doing something else at the same time. I noticed that when I had filled out the APN fields (listed below, so everyone can see what I'm using) and then turned the screen off and then back on, it would save and show on the APN list. But still didn't work. After looking closer, it was because when the screen turned off, the MCC and MNC changed from 310 and 012 into 311 and 480, respectively. I'm not sure why, but the APN editor automatically puts those numbers in every time I open the APN settings, but they obviously don't work. One time, in the grocery store, it actually saved correctly. The antenna bars showed correctly and the 4G icon showed for the first time. Then as soon as I left the APN screen to check the browser, they reverted, I went back into the APN list and it was gone again... this is incredibly frustrating
Name Verizon
APN: internet or vzwinternet
Proxy blank
Port blank
Username blank
Password blank
Server blank
MMSC http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
MMS Proxy blank
MMS Port 80
MCC 310
MNC 012
Authentication type not set
APN Type internet + mms
So I switched from Twisted back to TMS5 2.0 to check the APN settings in it as well. And it has the same issue, MCC is 311 and MNC is 480 by default upon opening the APN editor. TMS5 also has "default, hipri" under APN Type by default.
Just for the hell of it. I decided to try changing those numbers 1 at a time and saving. The APN Type was the only one that allowed me to change it. As I expected. I'm going to give AllianceROM a shot now and hope it works, but I have a hunch that *IF* flashing a different ROM does work, it will be a KK ROM. But I'm giving it shot just because I can quickly flash with FF, rather than having to use Kies and SS. Fingers crossed...
as expected. AllianceROM didn't work. Next step, I'm going to try the stock rooted OC4. I *REALLY* hope this works. The idea of flashing back to KK from LP makes me uneasy. If anybody is reading this, and knows how to flash a G900A back to KK, or knows of a thread that explains it, I'd really appreciate it.
(I apologize to those of you who I'm sure are getting annoyed at what seems to be a solo conversation. I'm only trying to document each different step I've tried just in case there's someone out there going through the same thing that happens to stumble across this thread. In the off chance that it turns out that I can't discover something that *DOES* work, I'd at least like to document what *DOESN'T* work so they can save the time and effort. Considering that I've wasted 15 hours now on this **** already, I'd at least like to save anyone with this same problem that stumbles across this thread some of that time.
Anyways... time to flash OC4...
Dude, just unlock all the bands from the secret menu. Google it. Go to UE Settings/Settings/Protocol/NAS/Network Control/Band Selection and select LTE/WCMA.
To access the hidden menu, use the app Secret Codes.
Warning: The code to enter the menu varies from carrier.
APN isn't needed. The relevant apn info is already on your SIM.

Wow. I wish I knew that. I even called VZW and they told me that it only had a gsm antenna and was impossible to use on VZW. Well I took that, and T-Mobile's sale as a sign. I had kicked around the idea of switching to T-Mobile and selling my VZW unlimited plan ever since T-Mobile came out with unlimited data plans. Especially with no contract. It just seemed like the ideal plan for $80. Then they had the sale for $100 for 2 lines unlimited talk/text/LTE. Which was what my Verizon plan was for one line and only 450 minutes. Turns out my friend and his girlfriend thought the same and just switched to that plan. So they added me as a 3rd line. Unlimited everything for only $40/month is incredible. So before I sold my VZW plan, I ran speedtest just to see what the difference was. Obviously expecting T-Mobile to be at a disadvantage there. Nope. T-Mobile was 35.37MB/s down, 11.65MB/s up. Verizon was 10.12 down and 2.57 up. But I live in Phoenix, so it's a big city with small buildings to get in the way and mountains scattered throughout to put radio towers on. I'm sure the results would be quite different in rural areas. But for my situation, I can't ask for more. Unlimited excellent service for less that half of what I used to pay. Plus I got to cash out decently on my old VZW unlimited plan before they either bring back unlimited data or do away with AOL, which I think one or the other will happen soon.
All-in-all, I couldn't be happier with a free S5 with a better plan on better service for a much better price. And I've rooted the S5 and put TMS5 2.0 on it which runs incredibly. I was very nervous making the jump but am so glad I did.
I just wish I checked this thread before so I could have been able to confirm if that would have worked to put this phone on Verizon, or if it was stuck as GSM only as was the conclusion I came to after trying everything I could possibly think of, and listed in this thread. I'm gonna see if I can find a friend with VZW that'll let me give it a shot with their SIM just to hopefully be able to help anyone else with the same issue
Wow man heads up more people may give your their $.02 if they didn't have to spend 5 minutes reading each post!
The reason your data didn't work is because you didn't update the modem when you updated the system (by using the different lollipop roms)... If you had updated the modem, data would have worked.

Anyone Using this on T-mobile?

Hi all
My device is arriving later today, will be using on t-mobile. Was hoping there are others using on t-mobile and would share their experience so far.
I plan on rooting as I cannot deal with excessive ad's and want to try out N-ify. Coming for samsung S-6 (been samsung since s-3)
Any advice from everyone greatly appreciated as well
Thank you
I'm on T-Mobile, came from the note 4 and then note 7. I've seen much better reception compared to both of my previous phones but the lack of wifi call(supposedly coming soon) has been awkward. The battery life has been amazing though so if you like the software and the feel in hand then you'll be very pleased with your choice.

Yeah i read somewhere the wifi calling required an apk to be installed. Any idea which one? Could I copy it over from my S6?
Honestly I only use at home because my reception here is terrible, but I lived with that on Verizon (no wifi calling ) for years so no big deal have ooma at home anyway.
How about data speeds notice any difference?

I have a pretty good signal and through the speedtest app I am topping out at about 75/50 on t-mobile. Haven't tried directly next to the tower, but with my old Note 4 it hit 110 down. Otherwise the speeds are very similar. Curiously t-mobile had turned on 'binge-on' for my account even though I have the old style unlimited, so it was giving me a paltry 1.5mbps. Turned it off (#263#) and the fast.com app gives me 50mbps.

Hi all
My device is arriving later today, will be using on t-mobile. Was hoping there are others using on t-mobile and would share their experience so far.
I plan on rooting as I cannot deal with excessive ad's and want to try out N-ify. Coming for samsung S-6 (been samsung since s-3)
Any advice from everyone greatly appreciated as well
Thank you

I just switched to T-Mobile and have found signal strength and speeds amazing. The only issue I ran into was, two days ago, I suddenly wasn't able to send/receive an MMS while on Wifi anymore (even though I use GoSMS and have the T-Mobile work-around enabled). Found out that T-Mobile switched some of their settings in my APN and locked it down. I created a new one and changed the following settings:
Port = 80
APN Type = default,supl,fota,hipri,mms,dun,admin,mobile
APN Protocol = IPv4/IPv6
APN Roaming Protocol = IPv4/IPv6
Now, it automatically switches to 4G if I want to send/receive an MMS while on Wifi, just like before.
Also, since you're going to root, I suggest you install "Buttons Remapper." Right now, the only way to bring up the Menu button is to enable the stupid MiPOP function, which causes screen overlay issues. Using Buttons Remapper, I mapped my Recent Apps capacitive button to open the Menu with a long press.

I know the note 4 and 7 both had amazin cameras, is the axon 7 camera satisfying?

The Axon 7 struggles in low light. It's not unusable, but it's not great. The pictures it takes in good light are fine. It performs a bit better with manual adjustment, leading me to believe that there are improvements to be made in the ZTE software that could improve the camera somewhat.

The work around *should* be for any messaging app as well. I thought the problem was GoSMS, so I installed Textra but had the same issue. That led me to believe it was a radio/modem/phone problem.
I researched the issue and a lot of people were/are having issues with the T-Mobile Wifi Calling app (on approved devices). When enabled, the app was supposed to send/receive MMS over wifi (like Sprint), but people were noticing messaging apps would just hang when sending or be stuck on "downloading" when receiving. They had to disable wifi and connect to a cell tower to receive the MMS. The APN settings bypassed the app by reverting to cellular in order to send/receive the MMS, then re-enabling wifi.

Thank you, I thought it was something else. I added that as a separate custom apn. Just in case.
Tmobile user here. I used to have to use WiFi calling , when I had my note 4, at my house but am only using the cell network for calling and it's great! Getting about 100 down as well.
thanks for the APN, I feel like it has made a difference in my youtube buffering speed.
