MIUI v4 Discussion Thread - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

As we all know, the Galaxy Note was recently added for official MIUI support. MIUI China is working towards a first public build. Contrary to popular belief, MIUI v4 is based on the Stock ROMs rather than CyanogenMod 9. So, almost everything should be working flawless from the start -- as it was supposed to be. All in all, we can look forward to the looks of MIUI and the functionality of Stock ROMs.
According to the latest polls, 4x5 icon layout has been chosen as the default which is rather perfect for the Note's large screen. Here's the screenshot from the tweet...

What's interesting to note is the S Memo icon! Although, that was expected since MIUI is based on stock Sammy ROMs, yet it's nice to have a "confirmation".

We'll also have the emmc bug then...
Though I won't be able to go to another ROM that doens't have per app DPI/Layout ever again...

what does it say about the emmc brickbug? will they have MMC_CAP_ERASE removed for safety?
also I guess that this means MIUI4 can no longer be considered AOSP ,since it's using TW as abase.
should be interesting though ,keep us posted please

Guess they are using lq2 base with rooted cf kernel.
but we can flash franco kernel etc. id wait for miui scotlands version of the official rom as they make it really better for samsung devices

^^ Exactly! I suppose we would be able to flash SpeedMod/Franco Kernel. So, we'll be safe from the eMMC bug to a certain extent -- of course, if we follow the instructions.
I'm excited because we get to retain all the stock goodness! I'm using PA myself and it'll be rather hard to switch to any other ROM. However, I'm a long time fan of MIUI and will definitely switch once it's available in all it's goodness.
Also, the MIUI theme contest which is going on right now should give us some great themes, which is lacking ATM.

love how they're asking the community what they want in the rom; how it should be done. only weak link is samsung, how a multi-million dollar company is out-shined by the dev community never ceases to amuse me xD.

I don't think fb is the best place to get feedback. End users don't necessarily understand the concepts of developing or porting a ROM. Will try and push this thread to them, once it picks up activity.

of course we can flash a safe kernel ,but it would be nice if they released their own optimized safe kernel to begin with.
and yes I also think it would be interesting to see MIUI4 based on TW ,hopefully it won't have lagging or memory management issues like official ICS does.

Don't expect much in the Kernel department. Everybody always switches MIUI Kernels ASAP mostly because they're not optimized for performance/battery. They're mostly just optimized to run.

oh ,I didn't know that ,your MIUI V4 port was the first (brief) encounter with MIUI for me.
and since it was based on cm9 kernel it was actually very smooth.
here is hoping the real MIUI port is at least just as good

The official port should have a butter-smooth launcher just like MiHome for ICS.

seeing that you are a long tie MIUI fan ,may I ask you what's so good about it?
when I tested your port the positive side was a feel of elegance ,and total customization even more than CM9.
the bad side however was the iOS look of the launcher which I hate so much, and the lack of an app drawer.
luckily the launcher can be easily replaced ,and since this is based on TW ,I can switch to it to retain full functionality ,while (hopefully) not draining all my RAM like the official sammy ROMs does.
so care to enlighten me to more positive points of this popular ROM ,ones that I won't find in CM9 (beside the TW functionality obviously).
thank you

Even I hate the fact that the launcher doesn't have an app drawer but there is an app for that -- MIUI Control -- it gives you a pull down app-drawer.
The best thing about MIUI is the fact that you can theme pretty much every aspect of the ROM with a click of a button. That's not the case with CM9. There aren't many themes for MIUI v4 as of now, however that will change in the near future.
Also, with MIUI you have the option to apply individual elements of different themes -- and then combine them into one theme file. That alone makes it the best ROM for theming.

exactly ,that pretty much sums what I know about MIUI from my ~1 hour trial with it
good to know that there is an app drawer ,can't stand a combined view of apps and widgets.
thanks again

I've already ask them about the removing of the emmc-bug in their kernel here and on their "what device should get miui next?" poll. Without any answer.

I have been using MIUI for more than a year on my HD2, which I have sold to get Galaxy Note. I can tell you that the nicest thing about MIUI roms is the notification bar on top. I don't understand why all ROMs don't have this notification / control panel that MIUI has.
No more widgets to turn on bluetooth, wifi or toggle between 2g and 3g to save battery. You just pull down the curtain, and switch everything on or off easily. So this is what I miss most on other ROMs.
The rest, its a very fast and smooth mobile OS. Simple to use, lots of themes and frequent updates with new features and bug fixes.
Not sure how well it will handle the S Pen, as this is one of the features that separate G.Note from the rest of the competition, but if they manage to get everything working well, I am sure that it will be a great success.

^^ Agreed. The main thing I like about MIUI is that it is a complete experience right off the bat. You get...
1. File Explorer
2. Backup
3. Monitor
4. Blacklist
...and so much more! Of course you can install all these separately for other ROMs but it's nice to know that they're all packaged with MIUI.
And yes, it would be great if they manage to retain all the S-Pen functionality. With custom ROMs we lose this functionality which then makes our phone like any other. Don't get me wrong, I love myself some PA/CM9/AOKP goodness, but then my phone doesn't feel any different from the S2 I had.

well the Spen still works in CM9 ,just without the Snote app ,have you tried installing photoshop touch? you get absolute control with the pen .
did you know that hovering the pen gives you a mouse cursor in CM9 ,while touching it will register a click ,just like a desktop PC .
but of course it will be nice tom have MIUI with all TW functionality ,IF they keep the performance a priority

Review of ROMS -UPDATED 2/3/11

This thread will focus on the current roms, and if theres a new version, it'll be back up on here in a week or less.
I encourage other people to make REVIEW's as well to keep the new users updated on the new roms.
Try to do these reviews on ROMS that haven't had reviews done on them yet.
Note: These are personal opinions.
NOTE: as another person mentioned below, most of these ROMS do support OVER CLOCK kernels, but make sure by asking the devs or other people using the same ROM.
Disclaimer: By voicing my opinions here, i am not saying 1 dev is greater or better than the other, i'm simply stating my personal opinions and personal experiences.
What does a BETA- (ROM NAME) mean? It means that its a quick review, and not a fully detailed, when the beta is removed, it means the rom has been used for atleast a week, which gives me time to examine its uses etc.
Nero v5 (KA5)
Developers: Team Whiskey (TW)
Nero, is said to be the "best rom for the vibrant" by many users, and this reason is because of the reputation Team Whiskey has, their roms are ALWAYS stable, have incredible speed. Nero comes with VOODOO, the latest one available, and currently has KA5, which i'm guessing is because KA5 is currently loved by many people and serves good reception and speeds, where on KA6 and KA7, people compain about speeds, or TW may be working on their official froyo rom right after the source is released by Samsung.
Nero has the beauty, speeds, and anything else you can say.
If you have problems with lag on Nero, trust me it is NOT the rom, it may be that you do not have VOODOO (lagfix) enabled, or that you flashed it in a incorrect way.
Nero is based on unofficial 2.2 till now.
Nero comes with a sleek ginger-bread looking notification bar.
A little problem very few people have is that Team Whiskey is very "un-user-feedback" meaning they don't usually respond to comments, or questions on their threads unless if its absolutely necessary. Maybe because their more busy? I do not know.
Battery life is good, but i've had to recondition everytime. experiences will be differ.
Nero is recommended to everyone and anyone.

AXURA Vibrant Edition 2.2.7.1 [KA5] Beauty
Developer: Master and his website is Devs4Android
Axura is EXTREMELY stable, and i admire this rom VERY much, knowing that Master, alone made this entire ROM. The developer Master is a common community member of XDA, and does answer questions, and replies to comments etc. Axura is also on KA5, and the latest VooDoo, and based off of a 2.2 unofficial ROM. Unlike most 2.2 based ROMS out right now, Axura has a sleek silver-grey theme, which makes it one of the most unique roms out. The best thing about Axura is not the beauty, or the speeds, and not even the stability. It is the Battery, even without a recondition, you will get around 20+ hours of battery life on this ROM, but it will all come into how much or how less you use your phone and how heavy you use it. If your need Battery, Stability, Speed, and Dev-to-User feedback then get this ROM NOW.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bionix-V (Official OTA 2.2)
Developer: Team Whiskey
Bionix is the latest, and greatest ROM out, as of 1/26/11.
This is the rom i've used for a few weeks and can i just say that this is magical. The battery life is EXCELLENT!(make sure to flash at when your at 100% battery for maximum effects, or recondition after flashing) I can easily last over 20 hours with moderate use and no recondition.
The Design of the theme is, as always, Gingerbread. It has a sleek black notification bar, and all the designs are black as well.
The speed of the rom is incredible, and i cannot tell if its voodoo doing this or the rom itself, because when i tested thsi without voodoo. i felt the same effects, it has absolutely no lag.
When you flash the rom, Voodoo is auto-enabled, so if your coming from a non-voodoo rom-enabled, it will take time to reboot.
It runs a KA7 Modem, which is good as any other modem for me.
IF you want the most out of your Vibrant, then THIS ROM IS A MUST TRY.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Br1ck'd's **no bloat** Froyo
Developer: Einherjar
This is a rom that you'd like if you were more of a "STOCK" person.
This rom is TOTAL stock, but with all the crap (bloatware removed)
It has a KA7 modem, which is NOT the official that came with stock, but KA7 is better than KA6 according to many users.
If your a TouchWiz fan, this has most of that, gone, i'm guessing mostly because TouchWiz is un-used or it created more lag.
A thing with this rom is that the LIVE WALLPAPERS are removed my guess is to bog down the lag, but i'm not 100% sure.
The battery usage on this rom is about 15-20 hours on moderate, but it may vary.
This has a STOCK look, meaning the black notification you usually see, is not here.
It has a grey-ish-black-ish notification bar, like any stock.
The GPS on this thing is incredible, i have not messed with any of my hardware, and trust me on some of the best roms out there (no names) my gps wouldn't work... but this rom right after flashing gave me 7 sattelites in less than 5 seconds and got a lock.
This rom has VOODOO backing it up with its speed. This rom comes with an amazing music player "miui music player" which is NOT created by the devs of this rom but it is the stock music player and just looks BEAUTIFUL.
I love the music player so much, i've already stolen the .apk and put it on my other roms
A Problem i've faced during this ROM is that even though its extremely stable, and even runs voodoo, i did experience lag, not a whole lot like the official froyo, but a little bit, enough lag to make me go back to my old rom.
I'm not sure if its just me, or its for everyone.
besides the lag for me, this rom is wonderful, and perfect for anyone looking anywhere close to a STOCK rom.

M - Flagship V4 BETA
Developers: Einherjar
Did you like Flagship V4? yes? well, you'll just think this beta is x5 better.
I don't know how Jellette makes these stable, while speedy roms, but whatever he does, it keeps improving every rom update!
The Battery Life WITHOUT recondition: 16 hours with light-moderate use.
The Battery Life WITH recondition: 20+ hours with light-moderate use.
The notification bar has been... redone.
As usual the notification bar is transparent and takes the place of any app your using, so it does change colors.
the pull-down is now, which i love, a sleek white-ish-grey-ish pulldown.
The icons, have also been re-done! They look beautiful, their kind of "oval" looking and fit with the whole rom.
It comes with an amazing music player, which includes...
Sound Hound music listener/finder, radio, your own playlists etc, and your videos, and youtube videos. It's a whole media package in 1 app.
The DOCK, i love it! The left side is a phone (we'll talk about this in the next sentence ) and the right is a messaging icon, in the middle is a ... hut? looking icon which you press for your app drawer.
The Dialer or phone call app on this Beta, is a transparent one. You can see all the numbers clearly, and you can see your background as well.
The icons on top are grey-white, and while your charging the battery goes green and starts going up.
The Beta comes with the newly found KB1, which has been giving me pretty good reception.
This rom is recommended to everyone, and anyone who has a vibrant.

Thanks xriderx66 very nice and accurate writeup in total agreement with you.
The only thing I would add is the Team-Whiskey have some overclock roms you can play/flash over the stock nero should the user view their phone like a corvette in need of speed modification
Thank you for this write up,im sure everyone will love this.
It takes a very talented and patient person to write up such well done and accurate reviews.
Thanks again for your dedication and time

Team Whiskey makes a variety of other ROMs that may fit that bill more closely than their Nero or Bionix projects.
Why someone would want to flash a nearly stock Android ROM is beyond me.
Just look around in the Development section.

I'm sorry, i review ROMS that i've personally used and had experience with it for atleast a week, reviewing a rom right after flashing will give it a very in-accurate review and i don't want that.

Awesome, you have made a rom for my 2nd favorite toy! Running 1.2x (rev3 ) on my Evo. I'll download, flash, test and report when I get back home where my G-Tab is.
Couple questions though:
Is hardware acceleration implemented?
What launcher are you using?
Is the full Market avaialble?
Any known issues?
I'm currently running Calc's 1.1 rom and it's pretty snappy.
Thanks for doing this!
My favorite ROM for my evo is now available for my gtab? I love it! I'm going to have to try this out soon. One question, though; does video chat in google talk work in this? I know in your build for the evo, you have to flash an additional file to get it to work, but I don't see an equivalent file here.

Can anyone tell me if you can open up Gps apps besides google maps.

Has anyone had issues yet.
any screens or video review of this?
so you said its based on 1.1 bootloader, then whats with the 1.2x thing? is that just a version number of this rom?
quick review
recovery installation:
went smooth. decent time. gapps installed no prob. on a 1.1 bootloader.
bootanimation:
Not present. Stock flashing android
First boot:
VERY fast. Got google login at begining
Wifi:
Found signals fast, connected to my device. so far no drops.
3rd party apps:
superuser. spare parts.dsp manager. so all stock cm 3rd party apps.
Launcher: Stock gb
Camera.eh. works for a .3 cam
Sd card: Does not find partion as sd card.
Icons/UI:
Wallpapers is cm. THe pull down notification is soild.
THe status bar is nice and big. friendly home menu and back buttons.
Overall. Seems to me like stock cm7. Dont see whats unique about this rom.
Could i get more info from dev to let know whats so different.
If dev can continue support on this then i can choose this.
SO all issues cm7 has, this has. dsp doesnt work. gps apps dont work.
GPS APPS DO NOT WORK AT ALL!!!!!
Not sure why any GPS apps would work since there is no GPS chip in the device. Having said that, I never tried any.....

Yeah, it's just the version number. Deck started this ROM for the evo, but has started making builds for other devices. It's just the convention he's been following with the builds for the other devices. The first stable release was 1.0; 1.1 was a short lived beta, then all of the betas since have been 1.2 followed by a letter. He's gone through all of the letters of the alphabet up to x so far, which is why this version is called 1.2x.

well i need this tablet to work with gps roms. i have to to tether it to my phone.
I said gps apps because nav apps use gps location. This tablet goes in my car and so far. havent found a non tnt rom that works with gps apps.
Just because there is no gps chip doesnt mean the app shouldnt work. I can tether to my phone to use mock location and get the gps location from my phone.
so thats why i mentioned this much
good q though
btw i updated your rom banner. Since this isnt the evo.
Btw you should change your first post to say tablet and not phone.

Both VEGAn roms work with GPS at least CoPilot and BlueGPS
Loaded flawlessly, only problem mounts SD card as Emmc which plays bad with other apps
thunderbolt sent, bamf enhanced
thanks for all the input. i will do my best to get this up to par with my evo roms i.e. everything working, + battery life, and + performance. This was my very first build for the gtab, so this was basically a base to see where needs fixing. i should have a gtab in my hands very soon as well, which will make development even quicker. My issue tracker is the best place to file issues, as i tend to them very promptly. Thanks again everybody, and stay tuned...

quick summary quoted from my other thread...
"Hey all. Been a while since my last release of anything, which was sense based, but I really wanted to start learning android and have a better perspective of it. I decided to dig a bit more into compiling android. Started horsing around with github and learned to start compiling my own builds from aosp wih the help from cmsrc, evervolv, and a few others githubs. Since the release of gingerbread to aosp, i moved away from sense. There are things that i do miss about sense, but the usability of the phone without it is just unmatched imho. Many people use or have used cyanogenmod. IMHO is a great open source project that has some of the best devs out there. I have always been more into the 'vanilla' look opposed to the themed and aftermarket. Recently i have been compiling gingerbread for the evo and mt4g and have had nothing but the best reviews. Basically the reason why i am here. Wondering if there was any interest in a few of my builds. Main reason from moving away from CM6/7 (cyanogenmod), ADW launcher and the extra added bloat(sorry) and themes. Battery life will always be one of my main concerns. Everything should work!"
Even deeper then that, alot of packages are pure aosp, I have many fixes to my roms that are not in cmsrc, and lots more. youll get to know me i am a perfectionist Hope this helps

[Rom][TeamGTP] Gingerbreaton 1.1

Team GTP presents Gingerbreaton for the HTC Thunderbolt
After working on gingerbread in the little amount of free time yoda and I have had, we both feel it's to a point where we would like to share it with all of you. Overall we are sticking to the ideas we started with, simplicity, stability and speed. You'll see all three of those reflected in our latest build. There are many other changes that are planned including a toolbox and a few themes by yoda. Also as of right now this build is sense 2.1. We will be adding in sense 3.0 and 3.5 as soon as we finish getting everything ported over ourselves. Also, I am gonna do my best to credit everyone I can, if I forget to credit you for something feel free to send me a pm and I'll correct it.
Sorry for the slow movement guys, yoda moved on to a nexus and I've been really busy. It's me myself working on this but I'm very proud of what I've been able to accomplish. This should be just as good if not better than before
Screenshots coming soon

Hurr? I thought it was basically porting the Runnymede rom to the thunderbolt? OR haha sorry if I'm annoying xD But if its just Sense 3.5, and you want to theme sense the way its supposed to be themed, then that leaves me under the impression its stock therefore, there is no need to theme? Or making different (optional) themes which are decent themes and are consistent (unlike far far too many Sense theme roms I've seen)
That reminds me, why have the only Sense 3.5 ROMs on the Thunderbolt thus far been ported from the Vigor? Am I the only one who thought it was much more logical to port the Runnymede's ROM? The Droid Incredible has had it for an eternity now
So this ROM is like to show how fast it can be (as its damn near bone stock) and Runnymede port is comin' right up? Again, jizzin in mah pants man xDD
Also, I should be able to make the animations stock by replaceing framework-res.apk in this rom from the one in the official gingersense build, correct?
Sorry if I talk too much lmfao i get excited about Sense :3

1) no extra theming to sense besides what you already see everything will stay the same. The only theming we are doing is in the form of sense skins. Different optional themes as you put it.
2) I've made modifications to the system to have it run the way it does and the way the kernel and rom handle memory and the other modifications I made are different than stock with it not having recent apps and such. We're keeping things simple so no heavy theming within the framework.
3) I will be adding in flashable zips for stock animations and other writeups on battery saving tips and such. Do not replace the framework-res.apk I will make the changes and have it in a zip for people who want it tomorrow. I'll also be getting the rom up into rom manager here soon as well.

Going to load this on my work phone as my personal phone got the OTA (or partial) GB updated from Verizon. Not sure why as I was running ER 1.7 and I had to load a new ROM just to get it to work.
Any chance you guys will do a stock battery meter? I really don't care for the gas gauge.
Sweet! Stock Sense 3.5! You rock man!! Just a few more to ask lmfao
You'll also put up flashable zips for stuff like (as you've said) stock animations, but what about stock battery percent icon (smooth sense icons), enabling recent apps, and extended quick settings? Not trying to bother you, I'm just curious to know what wonderful goodies lie ahead lol. Or you can surprise us XD

I don't have a lot of spare time but I'm working on what I can. The rom is car theme based which is why the fuel gauge is there. I have to re-write some xml files to get all the smooth animations to works and it's not that re writing them is hard it's just a longer process than i have had time for. When we finish the tool box you'll be able to change the battery icon to stock and add or remove battery percentage etc. Most of these features you're asking about will be in the toolbox in some form. The extended quick settings are planned for a future release.
I do what I can to make things as fast and as stable as possible, and we'll try to get the toolbox set up asap but for the moment I'm doing everything I can with the limited time I have.
Sweet man, thanks. You're awesome! I very much appreciate the hard work devs put into some of these amazing ROMs, hell, I even love to use alot of bases to make my own. Its frustrating sometimes, but nothing more satisfying than having the phone run exactly as you programmed it to run!

What do you like to do in terms of development?

ICS Just doesnt cut it.

Ive recently downgraded back to CM7 GB. ICS just has too many bugs and it seems im the only one who seems to think its "slow" or jerky at times. I encourage you if you just want your phone to work and be as fast as it can be to go back to CM7. It seems everyone keeps saying ICS is ultra fast and ultra smooth. In my experiences, ICS just wasnt made for the SGS1, the hardware just isnt powerful enough, heck even the Galaxy Nexus looked a tad slow on ICS compared to how fast it is on JB.
I dont think CM10 will be that much different from CM9. Im looking into getting an S3 when they drop the price a little bit, (£500!!!! I can get a decent laptop for that price)
I honestly disagree. I do feel Slim ICS is as fast, as any other 2.3 rom i've tried, with the added bonus of slightly improved responsiveness. This is my personal experience, of course.
And i also think it's not about the hardware. If it was, the iphone wouldn't be such a success. But this is a loaded statement and not really worth going over. I'm just glad everyone has a favourite flavour they can use
Ya really think dat ugly'n'slow CM7 is better dan ICS?
There are trillions of possible combinations of apps and settings, did you do a clean install (wipe everything)?
A clean ICS beats a clean 2.3 ROM.

Yeah its definitely useable. but maybe its just me, I feel like sometimes it will run flawless then sometimes it will feel laggy and slow, regarding iOS, its alot better coded than Android (im going to get hate for taht, but its true, you can run obsolete processors with iOS and still get it to work flawlesly since its so closely ccontrolled and optimised) Its the same with Windows Phone 7. If theres anyone who hasnt tried using Wp7, I encourage you to do so, my next phone will hopefully be the SGS3, but with every single Android phone regardless of specs, sometimes theres a delay with some things, i.e. the gallery. Its not so much lag anymore, just a delay between pressing the app icon and it actually loading. On windows phone, you press the app, BOOM, instantly its there. But JellyBean and "project Butter" is a step in the right direction. (And it looks alot cooler)

I got back to gingerbread although I liked the neat GUI of ICS and tested almost every variant of it except Slim ICS because it lacked support for Arabic based languages (my native language is Pashto). Another thing for me was the lack of feature of copying contacts to SIM which is crucial for me. Anyway I'm waiting if someone could include that feature, then certainly I will get back to ICS or JB.
ICS is good but the SGS just doesn't get the most of it, you can say what you want but if you think you're getting the full ICS experience on this phone you are sadly mistaken..
Honestly I don't blame the OP downgrading to GB, the sgs is what 2-3 years old now? If you want to run the latest software it might pay to start thinking about upgrading.

For me,
Slim ICS>Froyo 2.2.1 (especially stock ZSJPK)>Any Gingerbread rom
Why? The answer is ram. The notion of free ram being wasted ram is just silly. When ram is full, the phone has to constantly close and reopen background processes, causing a decrease in smoothness.
That's why Froyo 2.2.1 was the best, because it had the most least ram consumption. However, slim ICS had that ridiculously big ram configuration, which put it on par with 2.2.1. But it ranks higher because it is ICS and has more features.
Hmm i downgraded to froyo a while ago and found it heaps laggier than ICS , JB is much better than ICS imo now.

What a strange thread. I've been on a load of different ICS Roms, I've tried almost all of them and I've found 90% of them faster than stock Gingerbread/Froyo.
Right now I've been on CM10 Alpha (JB) for two days and my SGS feels like a new phone again. It's not perfect and 100% reliable, but it's pretty good for an alpha build.
im sorry. what is gingerbread/froyo? never heard of that.
it depends on personal preference to be honest.

Im not a developer, but the ram being full is not always bad. It just depends on how the Os uses it. I agree if you are constantly clearing and caching the ram as u open apps, you will lose smoothness but, for instance, my version of nix pre caches the majority of ram in advance for various applications to use. In essence insuring there is enough ram available for gui apps. Obviously if you are overall limited on ram though it will slow things down.
I have never felt like the ics ports were sluggish, just bit battery heavy, and they seem to run hot. That being said GB is the best compromise for me. Plus there is so much more hacking done for GB.

cm9 not as good as cm7.2

dissapointed in the following ways, I hope the downgrade path is easy.
Haptic feedback cannot be turned off.
Phone and contacts no longer fully integrated in one app.
contacts has background etc. that doesnt stick to OS theme.
Cannot disable pictures on contacts.
Cannot toggle contacts with numbers only on/off
Many options in the contacts/phone dissapeared. (yes ones I used)
The call screen is worse than the 7.2 version, smaller buttons for speakerphone etc.
Less options in the OS settings.
Launcher not as good as CM7.2 version.
The clear notifications button seems out of place.
Cancel number button out of place on dialer.
I am also not that satisfied by ICS itself. ICs/CM9 seems overhyped, will try CM10 but given there is not stable CM10 for this phone, and people say CM10 has the same contact issues I think I will be putting CM7.2 on in the end and not getting a s3/s3 mini at all (since they cant use GB).

What the hell u talking abt? Were u living in the 90s ?? ICS is history !! We r rocking in 4.1 Jelly bean & u talking abt Gingerbread ....makes he laugh...
And u said ics has less options in settings! Are u blind? Ics has more options in settings than GB.its just organised and categorized ..
U criticising the Holo UI !! Go live in a cave if u think Holo UI is not gr8...go buy an iphone...

ICS stock vs GB stock has about 3-4 extra options, but loses 3 options.
However CM7.2 vs CM9, CM7.2 has over 30 extra configurable options.
You guys ignored the list I said of all missing features, instead just went on a anti GB rave.
There is more.
I noticed now as well Trebuchet launcher is pretty bad, cant even add shortcuts to it, it does seem CM went backwards a lot from 7.2 to 9.
Now CM10 may be better than CM9, but isnt stable on this phone.
right now I am seeing if I can find replaceables.
Nova launcher works ok but the dock I have to press on hard and repeated times for it to work, googled the problem, others said same complaint but no fix. I tried adw launcher which works great in cm7.2, but is slower on cm9 on a s2 than it is on cm7.2 with an ace, whats that about?
I installed siyah kernel and extweaks, very nice kernel and that got me BLN. A proper working BLN (buggy on CM 7.2 on the ace).
I downloaded a new dialler (exdialer), its big improvement over cm9 dialer but not as good as cm7.2 dialer, how sweet it would be if I could find cm7.2 dialer to install on cm9/10.
Camera in cm9 much better than 7.2. But it has very loud sounds for focus and snap that cant turn off, they sound aweful as well very annoying.
I still have haptic feedback that cant be turned off either, eg. when using keyboard.
and finally the keyboard in cm9 is worse than 7.2, on 7.2 press shift twice for caps lock, on cm9 have to hold it down for caps lock
So you guys praising JB (and I assume cm10.1) the question is does it fix the problems I have listed, remember one key phrase, newer does not necessarily = better.

Which phone is "this"? The one in your signature? Then you are in the wrong forum to begin with...
Latest CM10.1 version has MANY additional features. If you see any lack, go to the github and make some commits!
I think whatever floats your boat, it's nice to get a view on older, more mature versions in comparison. It's like the old XP, vista, 7, 8 debate. Whatever works for you.

How about assuming its the S2 because its the S2 section of the site. But phone isnt relevant anyway as I am talking about the software not the hardware. Unless CM9 is a different software on different phones.
Is it that hard to comment on what I am saying in my post instead of just attacking and mocking me? maybe I make valid points but you dont to upset any devs, I dont know, tell me.
For clarity I will repeat.
the galaxy s2 i9100 (not G variant).
the only stable builds of CM for this phone are CM7.2 and CM9.
cm7.2 has dozens of configurations that are removed in cm9.
I noted any reviews i read of cm9 (presumably not wanting to upset developers) have considered removed features as non important and not worth worrying about, however I used many of the configurations removed in cm9 such as the ability to disable haptic feedback, ability to remove pictures of contacts, ability to list only contacts with numbers and the dialer in cm9 is pretty bad compared to whats in cm7.2.
The phone I use for calls etc. is whats in my sig, I am merely experimenting with this now as I dont just switch to a phone where I dont like the interface, I spent weeks if not months getting my ace experience to something useable. It seems it will be the same with the s2/s3 (I wont be using this s2 either but using it to test cm9/10 whilst waiting for s3 to arrive and then may not even keep the s3 and switch to nexus or something for stable cm10 build).
I will test cm10 also, but I have had people tell me already it takes more from cm9 than it does cm7.2.
So is it possible to simply comment on what I put in my first 2 posts in this thread, the functions removed in cm9 and if its possible to get them put back in cm9/10 via downloadable apps.
I also prefer CM7 but I think it's more of a nostalgia thing when I owned my Nexus One. Plus I love that CM colour themed Nexus live wallpaper.
Hey, whatever floats your boat.

Ok I am now trying a AOSP JB rom from here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1810042
So I see now that the dialer/contact/launcher changes I dont like are from ICS/JB itself which CM simply kept in their rom.
I do agree some will prefer JB/ICS everyone has their own taste, i didnt mean to offend anyone but was more hoping someone had a way to use CM7.2 dialer in CM9/10. Or CM7.2 dialer in any other rom.
again I am not too happy tho with the rom, it seems there is regressions on every android update google do.
they seem very pro cloud and anti privacy.
So on ICS and GB can disable auto sync globally on the phone, completely turn it off, GB also can stop any apps doing background activity globally (removed in ICS). I see on JB the option to turn sync on/off appears to be missing, I added my gmail account and it immediatly started syncing before I could disable individually the sync things on that account. So now I have a load of junk downloaded to the phone.
I also seen video clips showing super power widgets on JB (videos trying to show of how good JB is), but this has none at all.
It seems ICS/JB just arent for me I guess, the new features they bring dont seem to interest me, however I did want to upgrade the OS because of ICS/JB only apps (future proofing) and some hardware features require 4.x to work?
Looking through the phone settings, the only options I see that are not configurable on stock GB are a few extra for the keyboard input and voice input. Otherwise the only changes are actually removed options, it seems every progression of android is to simplify it.
My S3 is here now, if I am to use GB I will have to use a different phone unless the S3 maybe has a GB rom for it. This S2 is too damaged around the edges for my everyday phone (got of ebay).
if u really want something stable try TW 4.1.2 :good:
it has a lot of GS3 features and its fast + smooth as butter
try it one time and u will not look back
yeah still playing with firmwares
Now got PA 3.1.5 on (4.2.2) which I think is either based on CM 10.1 or has elements of CM in it as they credit CM in their post.
JB 4.1.1 AOSP was slow on this phone, I noticed it just by seeing backup restores been slower, apps slower to load etc. and when I did a quadrant benchmark and compared to the ICS scores they were about half, tons of loss on i/o speed in particular. 2d alo had a chunk of a hit, the score was so low compared to ICS and CM9 it was almost as low as my ace gets although the feeling was quite as slow as the ace, still much faster. (scores back up on this 4.2.2 based rom).
So I found now in the data usage options the ability to disable auto sync. I also found how to add settings shortcuts using trebuchat, I prefer the way in ADW launcher but at least its now gone from not been possible to just a slow way,
Played with the JB notification bar widgets, whilst better than what could do in ICS I find it clunky to use, they too spaced out and have to click on a button first to make them appear, plus is too many I dont have use for, but maybe there is a way to disable ones dont need to toggle. The widget configuration in CM 7.2 was perfect for me (to be fair I think was retained in CM9 also) but its gone in this rom.
I still have no progress on replacing the people app for contacts, ideally I still want to use whatever app CM used in CM7.2. also not a fan of the apps and widget been shown together in the ap drawer, to me app drawer should be just apps and nothing else. But thats not a showstopper, the dialer/contacts is the showstopper at the moment.
scores if anyone interested.

Think it has to do with simplifying the OS, we here are power users but most of the options were for me anyway null and void and overkill for an everyday use phone. You will find most if not all your options that you miss in CM7 are not there and probably never will be I'm afraid.
Google themselves want a simplified phone that the everyday Joe can easily use, and the CM team are so busy these days maintaining so many different devices that I think they would prefer a stable, fast, usable phone that wasn't crammed full of options some of which most would never use.
Just my opinion lol.
I agree those are probably the exact reasons.
