[Q] New Arc user - Xperia Arc General

I just got an Xperia Arc and I just want to ask a few questions
1. Do i need to unlock bootloader to install custom ROMS?
I had HTC Wildfire & ZTE Blade previously. Wildfire need to unlock bootloader in order to root by Blade doesn't. So do I need to unlock bootloader, then root & install custom ROM?
2. What is the best custom ROM for Xperia Arc?
I've was using CyanogenMod 7 for Wildfire & Blade. Upgraded my Blade to ICS with CM9 Coldfusion ROM. I'm glad that Arc has an official ICS update but upon reading the feedbacks I don't think I will update. So I'm looking for the best custom ROM, preferably ICS with constant update & changelogs.
3. Can I install custom ROM using ROM Manager?
Previously I've installed ROMs easily with ROM Manager. But read about FlashTool in the forum. Is it any easier to install custom ROM?

Welcome and enjoy your stay in the Arc forums.
There is a dedicated section for questions. After searching the forums and if you do not find sufficient answers, you can start a thread there.

Which ROM is on your phone now? Have you flashed custom ROM's before? If you answer no, then, I suggest, do some reading on this portal to gain some knowledge first before playing with your phone.
I think the phone have already on a modified a ROM.
I have flashed a custom rom on my old htc Blackstone (Windows Mobile 6.5). But i think that flash an Andriod Rom is different, and also the phone is different.
1. hv u installed blackrose? (a custom bootloader) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1270589
2. hv u repartitioned ur hboot to 220/16/200m (check the thread for exact values)
3. hv u partitioned ur sd for ext4?
these are the compulsory requirements of the ics roms.
generally flashing in android is very easy n straight forward. but these are lil difficult n tricky.
i would suggest u to do more reading

The latest Gingerbread is XXLC2. Yes, you can flash an ICS Rom, but I'd wait a bit if I were you. You need to learn quite a bit before being able to cope with Beta ICS Roms.

First you need to flash an older Rom so you can successfully root it. THis is how it's done:

There are ways to improve your Note's performance without root, yes. But you won't be able to significantly improve it. Too much bloatware in stock Roms that you cannot successfully remove.
Thanks
Thanks so much for the reply, but i m on 2.36 already, do i need to flash?
I suggest you to stay on LB3 and wait for Official ICS to release. however ICS AOSP ROMs are available Here . Before you flash any AOSP ICS ROM you need to root your device and other all details are available on above linked Development page.
But my phone's model is N7000B, will that affect?
Well, I think flashing ROMs these days is pretty easy. I am no expert but I've had no problems with flashing different ROMs as such and I flash new ROM every week or two. I am currently using Imilka's AOSP, which is generally pure ICS Android. Before this I was using CheckROM HD, great battery life and performance, based on GB.
GB ROMs are a bit easier to flash and have better performance and stability than all these ICS ROMs (apart from Imilka's AOSP, I find it just too good).
Open up the Android Development section for Note, read a few threads thoroughly, decide your ROM and go for it.
Rooting instructions are very well explained by Dr Ketan in his threads. You can't go wrong about it.
To summarize:
1. Flash an older rootable GB ROM through PC Odin.
2. Install ClockWorkMod Recovery (CWM). See Dr Ketan's guide.
3. (OPTIONAL) Install Titanium Backup and backup all your apps and their data. (Use batch operations)
4. Boot up into CWM, scroll to backup/restore and create a backup of your current ROM. This is a VERY VERY IMPORTANT step. Just in case anything goes wrong or you're not happy with your new ROM, you can go back to your older, original GB ROM with all your data and settings intact.
5. Choose your ROM.
6. Read it's thread thoroughly, especially the installation instructions. Do just like the creator says. If there's a video, follow it!
7. (OPTIONAL) Restore your data through TB.
8. Enjoy your new ROM.

How are you planning to install a rom if you can't root it?
Some methods were designed for older models & could turn your phone into a brick.
It has an unlocked bootloader, you should use fastboot to install clockworkmod & then root it or install a rom... search for my old thread.

Just search I have done it went from gb 2.3.4 to. 587, you just have to use flash tool to downgrade kernel then root with android emulator or something then flash back to. 587. I personally would do that install x parts v5 (cmw) or recovery x then install ultimate hd then mod ultimate hd
On the other case just unlock bootloader install kernel with cmw all ready on it, I am using rush and install custom roms
Hope this helps

Maybe this guide can help you.
If you're wanting to flash any of the roms here on xda you MUST flash the unlocked bootloader first. There are guides in my sig or see the unlocked bootloader thread by civato which is stickied in the dev forum.
