Howdy,
I'll be using my Note on AT&T and want to use their voicemail. Now I know how to install the apk from the forums, however do I have to have an LTE data plan for it to work? I have grandfathered unlimited data and don't want to lose it.
Also, what steps do I take in settings to make sure I am not nagged to accept updates? I don't want to upgrade to ICS due to bugs.
Thanks!

before its moved the answer is no... your plan is fine...
the updates... just un tick auto update in settings..
Only if you want to use Visual voicemail you will need LTE plan. It's actually better to change your data plan to LTE so you can have 5GB limit before getting throttled, you won't lose unlimited data either.

I am on the grandfathered unlimited plan. However, I went into ATT when I first got my Note because I didn't know there were multiple models. They couldn't "activate" it because the IMEI didn't register. However, they went ahead and put the ATT note on my account and "activated" me for LTE, but I'm still on unlimited data. I just don't have LTE because the phone don't support it.

As posted in the link from the post before you, you should have a good read-through of my tutorial on getting your unlocked Note working properly on AT&T

My mother has an iPhone 3gs with unlimited data and I have an atrix 4g with the 2gb data plan. My mother barely uses over 300mb a month, while I have to sustain myself from using any data the last couple of days of my billing cycle.
Would ATT switch are data plans?
No. but u can switch sim cards with her and then change your numbers... that's the only way that will happen.
No harm in going to a store and asking. I would get the store manager and see if they can do anything for you, not a straight up salesperson. You never know unless you ask.
Just ask, they are not that strict. Also, look in the IPhone 2G unlimited data thread here in the Atrix forums, there are att employee that will switch it for you.

That they will, but you need an iPhone 2G first. Can pick one up on eBay. Salesperson at my local store told me they have no problems doing this.
Can't do it without switching phone numbers with mommy.
This was posted before. It will NOT work once they do an IMEI dump. SO.. THIS is how it should be done. Yes, it works.
1) You must have an iPhone 2G, and a sim card that has never been registered to an iPhone 2G before
2)Register the iPhone 2G in iTunes.
3) Check online account to see if plan went through, or call 611 and confirm.
4) Use the phone for a day to show some usage
5) Put SIM card into your Atrix or whichever 4G device you'll be using.
6) Call AT&T and tell them you got new phone. You will be grandfathered in to new Unlimited data plan. $5 a month more.
5) Enjoy your unlimited data!
Again, if you use previous guide you will be put into a 2gb data plan when they do an IMEI dump and see you're using an Atrix on an Edge data plan. Activate Edge plan, then TELL THEM you upgraded. They may try to BS you, dont let them. They CAN and WILL grandfather you into an updated unlimited plan!!!
And you know this how...?

I know this as I did it 3 months ago.
Worked for myself and others.
This has been around for a while. Seeing as an incorrect guide was posted I figured id post the CORRECT way

That "other" guide was not incorrect. It worked for many users. Fyi. Worked for me just fine.

It will work yes. Until an imei dump. If you don't tell Att to upgrade you and they dump while you're using an Atrix on a 2G plan, they'll add a data plan but it won't be unlimited.
Okay, it wasn't incorrect... Just inaccurate and incomplete.

It still works?
Does this currently still work? Just curious.

hello,
When you call in to tell them you upgraded to a new phone don't you have to provide the IMEI# of atrix? So they would change your plan anyways?

Several of us are very curious about this. What is your source? What specifically is ATT trying to change, and by what methods? I just ordered my 2g on eBay. I really hope I'm not gonna hit some new snag.

Twanyneo, several of us would like to know what AT&T is doing about it. Or was what you said a lie?
Well, I just got my unlimited data today. So, there's that.

Oh, they'll throttle you after 10-12GBs...

I have the same question.
Yes, you provide the IMEI# of your ATRIX. but because you have the Iphone 2G unlimited data the computer grandfathers you in and they can upgrade your $20/month plan into the unlimited $30/month plan.
I am having an issue trying to activate the iphone. I got the iphone 2g and i wiped the data and plugged it in to itunes and itunes reconizes the iphone but does nto try to activate the phone. am i doing something wrong?
Just a heads up for GSM owners. I tried to get a data plan with AT&T today and after over an hour on the phone they told me that the only "data only" plan their system can add for the note 10.1 is a 5gb plan for $50. If you want the 3gb plan you also need a voice plan.

If you already have a plan with AT&T you can add the Note to your existing account as a non-Smartphone device. It's $9.99 for the extra device and $10 for unlimited HSPA+ data which isn't throttled or soft-capped because you're using the Cingular (3G) APN vs. the Phone (4G) APN. If you don't have unlimited messaging on the account the data is $15 vs. $10. The Note can share the plan minutes that are on the account for voice calls. Since the 3G Note is a foriegn device AT&T doesn't track the IMEI and can't detect that it's not just a dumb phone.

PMentior, BarryH_GEG is correct. If you already have an account with AT&T, just say it is a non-smartphone and will work great. I tested using my SIM card from my SIII and works great. I did noitce that indeed APN shows as Cingular, so like Barry mention you will have unlimited data. Here is a video of the Galaxy Note 10.1 I did, to show how to use it as hotspot and make phone calls.
Thanks for the replies. I know that I could get it set up with the media but plan but thats not really what I was going for. I don't need data on it too often, only when I go on a trip. With the tablet plans being no commitment I could pick it up only for a month here or there when I need it. With the media net plan it seems like I would be paying every month for services I don't need.
From my talk with att it seems like their system isn't seeing it as a valid tablet yet but I assume that would change in the coming months when the LTE version is released. Maybe I'll try again later but for now it is a case of something I would like to have but I know I don't need it.
As a side note I tried a prepaid tmobile data sim and I do get coverage but only edge speeds. I wish tmobile didn't use weird frequency bands for their data as the setup for the data sim was super fast and easy. If only att could be more like that.

Oh I see. Have you tried getting a pre-paid SIM card for a non-smartphone. I haven't checked into those yet, but if it does work with whatever plans they have, you could use a months worth and pay as you need it.

With AT&T, the nexus 4 unlocked will not require a data plan because AT&T does not have that phone imei number in their system or database. I used an unlocked nexus s before with no data, so this will be the same. Even if you want data it'll be only $15 unlimited HSPA+ or $20 unlimited data and text since it'll be considered a standard phone.
I'm on AT&T's HTC One X without data plan. You would just call them with a dumb phone saying you sold your smartphone, and they will take off the data plan for ya. Once they take it off, you would insert the sim back in to your phone.

But if they ever did add them they could detect the IMEI then they would change your plan. I do see on their website it is technically possible to do this and comes out to 70 a month at the cheapest, but is it really DC-HSPA+ or some downgraded version of it?

They do reactivate your data plan but from what I seen its pretty rare. I have some friends running ATT without data plan and they haven't activated a data plan for them yet.

no no i was wondering is it possible to use the 15 dollar unlimited feature phone data option? If i was to activate it ona feature phone first then put it in my sim. When do you think they would add the smartphone one. But I will test the tmobile prepaid sim i got in a tester phone I have first before in it because Im on sprint need to test my network options lol.
Why not use $45 Straight Talk unlimited talk/text/data (which uses AT&T) and not fuss with AT&T at all?
asked on 9500 forum also... ATT part might be better off in here

still mid searching but had some specifics regarding my situation that might not be found via search or have been covered.
if they have, please point me in the right direction.

Grandfathered data plan at 25 bucks unlimited (non LTE)
Currently using international 9100 S2 with no issues with data or plans being changed or updated (getting HSPA+ speeds)
Question 1: Will dropping my sim into these phone(s) work with my grandfathered data plan and what kind of data speeds should I expect? HSPA+? LTE? or should I just buy a carrier pigeon? ------
Question 2: How about buying an ATT phone? Ive heard my plans haven't been touched or modified due to my phones IMEI not being in their system since its from Venezuela or something like that. Does that theory hold water?

I read that to get LTE I would have to get an LTE sim which would require me surrendering my grandfathered plan and getting a 50 dollar data plan at like 5 GB :-\ ....
