ICS on the Xperia Play (official: we won't get it :( ) - Xperia Play General

---EDITED---
Sony has confirmed that we won't get Ice Cream Sandwich on our Xperia Plays:
http://blogs.sonymobile.com/product...ream-sandwich-rollout-for-xperia-smartphones/
Sorry for making you think we would get it...

This is great, thanks.

well it's missing from this sony page:

Sony never talk to each other (sections) and would not trust what is written in the Sony support/product site so would wait for an official press release first before jumping the gun. Maybe the dude above me has spotted something more revealing .
BTW love the video I wonder who that was made by hmmmm

I know that the r800x (Verizon) will likely not get the update but do you think people with the r800at (AT&T) will get it?

The Xperia ray and the Neo V has the same specs as the PLAY so theres no reason why the PLAY should not be getting ICS.
It will definitely get ICS and it's just a matter of time !

There it is for all those doubters !

Other same spec device's got the update because it works ok. From the look of how the games run on the beta i would say ICS would brake the gaming side of a gaming device which would be silly for Sony to release it.

I still reckon people should just flash to AOKP rom. Looks better than the standard Sony Ericsson UI anyway.
Something about the standard UI just looks to me, I dunno, plain.
I couldnt care less about games working on it. I just use mine for emulators anyway

I can't help but think that maybe the XPlay-to-ICS thing would be like the x10-to-Gingerbread event. I never had the chance to play around with an Xperia x10 before, but last night I had to help my friend with his new x10. It was super snappy with its stock Froyo ROM, then lags were very evident and noticeable when I flashed the latest GB for the x10. I fear this will happen to Xperia PLAY.
I'm well informed about Sony warning 2011 Xperia phone owners around a month or two ago that the ICS coming to the portfolio might not be that fast and reiterated that their GB is very stable. Everyone wants a good upgrade, but again WHAT IF the fate of the x10 happens to our Xplays, too? God I don't want a laggy phone!

right now which is best custom ICS rom in the dev section ?
best in the field of stability and working touchpad.
thanks.

X10 never got an official froyo. It went from 1.6 to 2.1 to 2.3.
Not only that, but 2.3 on X10 was identical in performance to 2.1 (general consensus). Something must have been wrong with your buddies phone. When CM7 came to X10, it was (and still is) the fastest, smoothest and best ROM on the x10.

For the "The official info thread" you should probably spell it right

http://blogs.sonymobile.com/product...ream-sandwich-rollout-for-xperia-smartphones/

Well, I created this thread trully believeing we would get the ICS update.
Sorry to all I made to think it would happen.
And, thanks Sony, for making a gaming phone with such old hardware.

Xperia play Definitely my last sony and android phone. Bought this last december just for the ICS.
Will gift this to my bro and ill get iphone 4 or 4s. Good by sony and android.

As I've said before, if that rumor is true and the w15 will have simillar (same, except sound chip) hardware as x8 and if it will ship with gingerbread on it, S.E. will give us that update. It happened before with the X10 it will happen with the X8. Just keep in mind that's just a RUMOR.

[Update] Most gingerbread devices (including Xperia handsets) will see an ICS upgrade

Source -
http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/19/google-confirms-nexus-s-will-get-ice-cream-sandwich-for-real/
Okay, so we've already seen Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Nexus S, but that was decidedly... unofficial. We've just heard straight from Google's Gabe Cohen that the Nexus S will definitely be getting ICS. In fact, both he and Matias Duarte think most Gingerbread devices will see an upgrade, saying: "Currently in the process for releasing Ice Cream Sandwich for Nexus S. Theoretically should work for any 2.3 device." It's hardly a surprise and there's no specific word on timing just yet, but hopefully it won't take long to move that vanilla Android device up to something with a breaded exterior.
Keepin fingers crossed for our ARC.

HTC may be busy pondering its Android 4.0 future, but Sony Ericsson is apparently ready to take a bite out of Google's Ice Cream Sandwich. Yesterday, in a post on its Facebook page, Sony Ericsson's Dutch branch stated that it will indeed upgrade its Xperia lineup to the latest Android OS, though it didn't offer any details on release dates. We reached out to the manufacturer for confirmation, and received the following statement:
Sony Ericsson is currently rolling out the upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.4 across its entire 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio. This software upgrade will be available through a phased roll out in select markets. Beyond Gingerbread 2.3.4, we plan to upgrade our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio to the next Android platform made available to us.
The company went on to say that all official software announcements will be posted on its blog, so we'll let you know as soon as we have more details.
Bring it on!

yeah can't wait for ICS!
I just REALLY hope SE leave this one fairly stock, with regards to most of the apps and the UI.
They made the right move replacing a lot of 2.3 because frankly it sucked, but Google have really worked to refine this, it would be a shame to see SE spoil this consistency in the UI they've finally achieved.
.... Saying that.... I hope they keep the SE camera app, but everything else I'd love to see stock
So i guess we ( Xperia Arc Users) will get the ICE CREAM SANDWICH upgrade for our mobile ???

To be honest it wouldn't even really matter, if you wanted all stock you could just use CM. I'm interested to see how they can improve even more upon what Google has already done.

I can tell you from experience.the phone is slick. Solid build quality. Very good looking and fast as u know what. I'll see if I can get more hands on time with it. {PRO} General Chat.! Feedback about the ICS Update..

Hello
We all know how much we love our device. The only globally available qwerty smartphone. The xperia pro. Also known as iyokan, MK16i and MK16a. There was a user on xda named king-iyokan(guess how much he loved it). So here is a thread to show how much you love, share anything and everything about anything and everything.
Regards.
EDIT: TEMPORARILY THIS THREAD IS FOR THE ICS UPDATE DISCUSSION
Lemme say something at first.
I have an xperia pro since it was launched. I love it.
My brother got an xperia s on his birthday about two weeks ago. I wanted to try it out so I exchanged my pro with him for a week. After using the pro for a week he loved it so much that today he sold off his xperia s and got an all new xperia pro himself.
So our device is even better than the xperia s.
I love my Pro too, it is very bad that we have no own SubForum. It is my first qwertz phone that i ever have, and the hardware keyboard is so good . Its sad, that my MIUI port stuck on bootscreen, so no MIUI for the pro... sorry guys

If it's blackscreen the problem is on ramdisk.
If it's stuck on boot screen the problem is on kernel.
If it's stuck on boot animation the problem is on ROM.
Perhaps that might give you some tips and hope you continue your development there
Got another Xperia pro. Yay..!

I'm using TEAM stock ROM.
Curious thing happened with my Xperia Pro.
I got a MK16i (which is the international version) and living in Mexico.
So I couldn't get to my carriers 3G, I was bummed.
I decided to try changing Kernel/ROMs about some weeks ago, and by changing to CM7.2.0 by Freexperia, it suddenly started working.
Now I love my phone even more!
So the Arc gets an ICS update today.. Wish our pro soon follows it..

Xperia Pro ICS update roll out
http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/38384
I've had my phone since Nov 2011, love it, I need a physical QWERTY keyboard as I can not see to use the on screen keyboards and since the Xperia Pro is the only Android phone with a Keyboard, that's what I got.
Strange how, in the UK, it got such a soft launch, no carries where stocking it, I had to go through a 3rd party to get it on an O2 upgrade, so only could get the black one, I wanted the Red!
Anyway I noticed on the Sony Talk forum that ICS is now out for our phone, http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/38384
I don't have WinDoze or Mac PC (I'm a Linux user) so I can not use PCC to update (Bad Sony Bad)
Happy updating
P.S. XDA needs a Pro sub forum, I don't know how many thread, news item or votes I've completed for this and still nothing, very poor :'(

KitKat is all fine and dandy but without, I am sure, additional sources released by Sony (Ericsson) we will probably never get a JB kernel working and still retain full Xperia PLAY compatibility... then again I may be completely wrong and if I am someone correct me. I have stayed pretty much on GB for gaming. Either way, thanks for sharing... although I think this should go to the General forum.... anyways... thread on.
google says that they made the OS smaller and after so old devices that didn't get in the past update can now get update because they resolve many issues.

True but they also stated those will need to be updated by either the carrier or the manufacturer of the device(s). As $ony long ago gave up on the PLAY, I think its incredibly unlikely we will see any support form Sony and or even source releases.
Still, it would be awesome if we can get it up and running, but dont forget the highest kernel we can sort of get working, is kernel 3.4.
Kitkat would be an even higher kernel number.
Google isn't even releasing KitKat for the Galaxy Nexus. Sony isn't going to do it either, and it would need hardware drivers from Qualcomm side too.
Why is this thread in the dev section?
is that true?

Sorry for wrong section... Anyway to delete? On another note, dony and erricson broke up so i dunno if they would be wanting to support our 2011 devices. All we can do id hope a dev/sony has the power to bring us 4.4...
from the God of gaming, the Xperia Play
Nice Information
I think if the 3.4 Kernel is working it wont be difficult to get kitkat running. But as far there is no touch in 3.4

I'm 100% sure that sony has abandoned our plays .It's a good news to hear that the upcoming android OS is going to be a light one

They abandoned it,yes. As far as i know, there are no new models build and everything that is floating around in shops are the last produced batches, not getting the update to Android 4 kinda sealed this assumption
I don't know if the X Play will ever get KitKat but Google introduced a new runtime called ART to replace Dalvik with KitKat, on my Nexus 4 it really improve the performance to a substantial amount, so maybe that will help as well.

Would be great if Sony would pay more attention to their old phones, specially because they cancelled the ics update so sudden.
But i don´t think this will happen.
And that's one reason I won't buy Sony again.
we will get 4.4, not official but we will get it.
once i got a play i will work on it, otherwise we will have an other dev.

so? is there anyone working on kitkat roms for xPlay? or its abandoned at all?
By the looks of it, KitKat is out of reach for our device, theres barely any 4.1 or 4.2 jellybean roms functioning, what makes you think we will get 4.4 any time soon? Our Play is best optimised for GB due to performance issues as ICS+ isn't 100% functional on our play. Don't believe me? try any ics rom out and sooner or later you will find out that games will lag and memory will tend to be low. Sorry but this is the bottom line for our xperia play.
Legacyxperia (mostly mike) is working to get gully working 3.4 kernel. Than we wpuld be able to boot kitkat.

It is indeed possible, and I am saying this because I have NEO L(same as xplay) and I ran kitkat on my phone, thanks to @Mike's hard work. He reached at a point now where touch is working, he just need to have Wifi,Camera and some other things work and it will be there
