Considering it's age, the G1 seems to have more staying power than most phones. The development keeps going and going.
What do you think is the reason? The "cool factor" of it being the first Android phone? Or because it is so easy to root and change? Or is it something else entirely?
Sent from my HTC G1 using xda premium
Yes there's the coolness factor but lots of phones are easy to root. I sugest it is that the android dev scene started here and that there is such a wide range of past support that it is easy to build on this knowledge. Also the price of a g1 is minimal compared with almost any android phone. All that said I'm sure many including myself has set to see a better phone in the lines of hardware. If this phone had more ram, internal memory, faster cpu and gpu, I would probably own it untill the day of my death. Just hope htc makes a g3 with the looks and feel of the g1 in mind - id be willing to spend a lot of money on that

I love the keyboard and that was my first android phone. First I had contact with rooting and flashing custom roms.
This morning I just flashed Super D. Because I think 1.6 is best for this device.
Using as my 2nd phone, as my mini telescope camera, for chating with friends and other litttle things. ...
Also there is no sim card, Flight mode and WiFi On to increase battery life.
Great Phone! !!!

I'm loving my new G1. I think its definitely the nerd factor of being able to say, "I own the first android phone ever". Plus, the keyboard rocks, and I'm actually liking the chin thing. And I like the power button on the front.
Tick, tock, goes the clock
Even for the Doctor
Okay... I bought this G1, by accident, for $30. Worked perfectly. Modded to Gingerbread. And it has paid for itself
It is:
Competant MP3 player
Police Scanner
Turn by turn talking GPS
OBD2 Car Diagnostic Scanner (that is how I made the money)
Fairly good Internet Browser
Email Device
Texting
Facebook
Twitter
WiFi 3G Hotspot
For the money, it is probably the best tech gadget I ever bought
Also, it is a pretty decent phone

JOKING! I haven't even made anything worth mentioning...
But anyways, the G1 is just pretty much totally open
I've been thinking of writing ASM hello worlds for it, if possible

Rooting this was an assssss of a hassle...you had to install an app then format your SD to fat32 then type some freaky **** using an app that probably doesn't exist anymore then downgrade to rc29 then flash spl to run hero jeeezus it took me like 1hour then 30 minutes when I had it down.

To be honest, the phone more or less fell into my lap. I still enjoy messing around with it, because it is slow. When you have so little, it makes one conscious about development habits and tweaking in order to make things simplistic and efficient.
Also, I'm a developer in devices/systems/architecture, so I find this kind of thing interesting to mess around with.

You brought up a REAL good point. The amazing amount of memory/speed/storage makes for very sloppy code. I started off on an ancient Digital/16 that you had to program in binary through toggle switches.
Old/slow hardware makes you think about what you want to do.
This ain't no script kiddie/pre-compied kitchan type of gadget. You gotta think, test, and think again

If someone released a new phone with the same form factor and keyboard as the G1, but updated specs I would buy it in a heart beat.
Full hardware keyboard in a present-day smartphone is rare. Manufacturers of smartphones are going to make as thin phone as possible.
HTC Dream is not thin, but for this great keyboard, who cares!
G1 was my first Android experience. I really liked it. Although I have switched to Desire S, I still have good, old G1 in my desk drawer. It was still pleasure to use it again when my Desire broke and I needed to send it for repair. I'm never going to sell my G1.
Maybe it's not powerful phone, but thanks to developers, we have huge number of custom ROMs (personally I think that 1.6 is the best for G1).
Easy to root, to flash custom ROMs, It's cheap (in PL you can buy used for 200+ PLN - it's about $60). I think that's why it's still supported by developers.
I'm not a developer, just custom ROMs user, but testing and finding best ROM for me as user is a nice thing to do. Now I am using my G1 for chatting on jabber when lying in bed.
I wonder what are unusual uses of old Dream? Maybe PC Remote?
UPDATE
Still using my G1 as my "main" phone (Actually, my only phone).
Running CronMod's GB Rom, and very happy.
My "not thin" G1 is freakin' HUGE with the extended battery and big back cover. As a plus point, I have NEVER "lost" it in seat cushions. Plus, the thickness makes it easier (for me) to hold.
I love all the apps available, from XDA Developers, to the HP Printing app.
About the only real thing I do not like is Netflix is pure hell on this phone. Not netflix's problem. The lack of horsepower really shows up with this app.

My mother in law gave me an old G1. I already had a Droid 1 on Verizon at the time and didn't want to change phone or network.
Still, it was fun to root it and put CM6 on.
That was about a year ago. I know a bit more about ROMs now and just now thought to look around xda for more information. Wow! I am surprised that you guys are still working on it!
Wish I could find the bugger. It got packed up somewhere for a move.

For me it started off being the perfect combination of QWERTY keyboard and would work with my carrier. Now, though, it's the ease of use. Rooting it was no trouble, there's a huge variety of mods with a wide range of features v. performance options and even thought I've tried other QWERTY phones, I still love this keyboard better than any other. Plus, any time I need to replace something on mine, there's no shortage of ones kicking around for spare parts. They're the Jeep Wrangler of android phones, if you want to keep yours running, it's ridiculously easy. Love that.

Just wanted to ask, since youre a newbie and you're running CM7, do you think its ok running CM7 for other newbies?
I'm already perm rooted, plus I've followed, read & watch couple youtube vids on CM roms so I pretty much know about em. My only deal is, will i lose the function of running all those 3rd party apps in market, or lose stability, or even experience battery, signal or gps issues?? Cuz if not then i'll def put CM7 rc1 on

Hmm... Well, I'm the type to hack everything I own. Like literally. I'm also 17 and have alot of time on my hands. And I happen to be employed as a tech support guy lol. I really enjoy tinkering with things. Thats why I enjoy the nightlies/CM7 in general so much. Plus I can show it off haha.
As for loss in functionality, there aren't as many as you would think. Most apps are compatible and the few that aren't are constantly being updated, due to the Nexus S being more common and such. I haven't noticed any loss in compatibility in the apps I use, but that's kinda subjective. My battery has actually improved with the kernels I use and my signal hasn't changed from stock. So I definitely suggest it. As long as you can follow instructions and keep a level head if you run into problems, go for it.

My iPhone 3GS is dead, time for an upgrade, wanted to jump in the Android world, I found the spec of the Atrix really interesting but the Bootloader issues is really turning me off ... There is usually so much cool stuff out with new ROMS ... I also tend to stay has far has I can from Carrier's crap, so with that bootloader restriction it's pretty a dead project ATM ... I was wondering if we can hope anything in a short time frame (+- 6 months) ?
Thanks
I'm getting an Atrix soon and as excited as I am, I'd probably recommend getting a Nexus S or an HTC phone. You'll get the flagship Android experience with the Nexus S (or 4G if you can wait) or the HTC Sense experience which is what I originally thought Android was all about. With HTC phones though, if you want you can go with an ASOP ROM and go completely stock, or use the HTC Sense framework which really kicks the user experience up.
I'm a bit of a spec junkie but I surprisingly loved the Sense experience my HTC Desire Z provided me with. I previously owned a Sony Xperia X10 which disgusted me and really made my initial Android experience pretty sour.. missed out on Flash, missed out on updates, missed out on a ton of things and had lots of bugs. Stock Android or something HTC would probably be the way to go with the Atrix's bootloader uncertainty.
The devs on these boards are nothing short of amazing, but Motorola's really got this clamped down. I think being an Android virgin you could easily enjoy the Atrix, but stock Android and Sense are really awesome and I think everyone should experience it at least once.
I got an eLocity A7, I loved the snap of Tegra2 and Atrix specs looked really nice. I've been in the Windows Mobile 6 scene and always hated the junk carriers installed on cell phone. I always enjoyed Sense or Stock (6.5 at the time ...).
I'll stay away from Atrix until I see ROM devs ... the Desire HD seemed really nice but I'm also temped by the iPhone 4gs or 5 with the HTC Flyer combo =)
Thx for the input !

You can do just as much much with the atrix as you could with a jailbroken iphone. Coming from an iphone myself the bootloader is not a big deal. Everyone is jealous of my phone including all my iphone and evo friends. Opening up the bootloader would be extra icing on the cake.

haha that's a great analogy.
I am interested in the Atrix as well, when it comes out. However, I would be interested in flashing a stock gingerbread. As far as I understood the discussion here, the bootloader is closed, which means, if I understand correctly, will avoid the installation of another rom, won't it?
Hello fellow Vision Users,
Just thoughts I'd jump on here to open up a discussion. I first acquired a T-Mobile G2 when I dropped my MyTouch Slide and had to get an insurance replacement because i had broken the Camera lens. The phone still functioned fine and i was willing to live with it til someone informed me that Insurion didn't have my color in stock so my options were to get a Black MyTouch Slide (as opposed to Red) or the G2. Naturally i decided to get the G2 (because really, who wouldn't?). It's been my favorite phone since the Sidekick LX.
Anyway, a couple months ago I acquired a Sensation 4g from my Brother when he upgraded to a Galaxy S II. I Instantly rooted and put the best rated ICS Rom on it. Been Running OpenSensation ever since. Hands down best Aosp on that phone.
Since then I continue to Keep my G2 up to date. Currently running ILWT. While I haven't used it extensively since getting the Sensation I sincerely find myself missing my G2. While ICS runs pretty flawslessly on the sensation, I'm just really not "in love" with the phone. I haven't ran any ICS Roms for very long on the G2.
Sorry for the Long read but, what I'm basically getting at is that I'm pretty bummed at the fact HTC has decided that they "currently" have no plans for Qwerty phones. People make fun of Apple for releasing the same phone over and over, but really, what's wrong with that? Seriously, if HTC decided to make The G2 again with a snapdragon S4, maybe a slightly larger screen and some minor cosmetic changes (maybe no "Z-hinge") wouldn't you buy it again? I know I would!!!
TL;DR - I LOVE THIS PHONE and i want an updated version of THIS phone sometime in the future, I couldn't care less of "Thinness."

ICS on the G2 is getting better and better. Most of the bugs have been killed by now.
I can understand your feelings of not getting a G3. It just really sucks.
I think I will just keep using my G2 for at least a year. Overclocked with ICS its still a great phone. Typing this with my hw keyboard still is way better then the virtual one..
I think that if HTC is not going to make a decent hw keyboard phone, someone else will. There are still lots of people that want a hw keyboard. If there is a market there will be a product
Ps. The G2 is not that old and HTC only gave updates for a very short time. I would think twice before getting a new HTC. This phone is more then capable to run ICS...

Like I've said, I'm currently using a Sensation, which I have on a permanent "borrow" lol. I agree, the G2 is plenty powerful for "old" hardware. And i love The hw keyboard. When it comes to every even thinking about giving up the g2..all I hear from other friends who were previous g2 owners is how much they miss it?!! lol
And how there new GS2 is compatible with this app...and they miss there qwerty board! And my main focus is I don't think there is another HTC phone that will come out with a better appearance then the g2! All the material that is used seems cheap! ....in my opinion.
I am thinking of getting a new phone soon too, however, I still will be keeping my DZ with me. The main reason why I am considering getting a new phone is that I am starting to feel it being just a bit outdated. New apps and games tend to lag pretty often even with all the tweaks Ive made.
Anyway, I still love my phone. Though I dont use the HW keyboard much lately, it comes in handy when I have to type in long messages like this post.
I really hope we will see another HTC device with a keyboard soon.

I'm noticing this as well. All the newer games, even little word games, lag my phone. If you open more than two of them, our beloved g2 just can't handle it anymore. I was using a mt4gs for a little and man, if this phone had that processor it would be so much better. Anyhow, august can't get here fast enough for me, upgrade city.

Been exclusively using my G2 for about a week now, put the Aokp port on it, and I have to say it runs fairly well, sure certain things lag but that's expected. For a single core it still handles everything just as well as any current mid range to low range phone.
Personally I Never play games on the G2 so that doesn't really matter to me. For web browsing, checking facebook, twitter, texting, web browsing and of course making calls it's still perfectly capable.

I must say this has been my favorite device to play around with that I have in my little arsenal of devices. I got this baby for free from a co-worker when she dropped it in a bowl of water. She was going to donate it and I immediately told her that I would take it. I sure am glad I did. To think about 2 years ago it came out with the specs it has was a breakthrough for Android devices and it still is a really strong almost unbreakable beast. I still use it on a daily basis to watch youtube videos via HDMI. Also the EVO 4g community is great with good peoples. I swear sometimes I think a noob is going be hanged when they ask a question but instead someone respectfully answers them. Great devs, great people, which will make me hold on to this device until this place becomes a ghost town which I don't think will happen anytime soon.
Please share any awesome experiences you guys have had with this device
This is the first and only smart phone I have owned. It has taken me to high levels of enjoyment and understanding. I have dived deep into Android and haven't been held back by my device.
I will say I am not happy with htc's recent trickery with their bootloaders but if they did a nexus device I would be right on it.

this was my first android phone. i was a fan of android before i got it, and definitely knew that my next phone would be an android, so when it came out its specs made me drool. i've had a ton of smartphones since they started coming out. i had dell axims before smartphones, and this phone really is awesome. i mean, i think that pretty much any high end android phone is pretty awesome considering where we were only a few years ago before android was fully mainstream, back when your option was an iphone that couldn't copy and paste text, or a windows mobile phone that would crash when pasting. the one thing that really stands out with the evo for me is the build quality. its not *that* bad. indestructible? oh no... this phone breaks in weird places without even being dropped, like the usb port, power button, etc. but since my last htc product with the touch pro, i didn't trust htc with building anything decent. that phone broke in so many ways it was unimaginable. i was always thinking, what's going to fall off next? so, i've owned the evo for almost 2 years now, and well, i still own it. that says something.
I fell in love with it the second I had it in my hands. Android has been an absolute blast and I love that its continuously being updated and stuff. I have now moved on to the new HTC EVO 4G LTE and use my OG EVO as a tethering device for my computer

I'm not sure if I want to get my hands on the EVO LTE yet. I have been looking at the Galaxy note seems like a pretty neat device to play around with but I do want another slider. I am very partial to my slider devices

I'm considering the Note as well. Just wondering if I will get bored with it. Been hard to get bored with my evo 4g since I can always flash a new and different rom. But the Note is tempting
This is the only phone I've owned that has kept my attention for the life of the contract.

It is really amazing, that 2 years later this phone still holds it's own. I still think it's a great looking phone, and with the abundance of ROMs available I have a hard time upgrading.
I agree with the post above, it's hard to consider upgrading when there is such a great dev community here. Thanks all!
I think that by having hdmi out for netflix makes the phone badass
My favorite phone too.

It will be sad to decommission this one... but excited about the SG3. Never gonna let it go though!!
While this is "kind of" an HTC fanboy post, I would like others opinions... I love the ONE (The reason I'm posting here), but HTC has fallen behing when it comes to dev support and all together ingenuity (no "But... boomsound" please). I Hate Samsung as an HTC fanboy, but they have been consistent with their products, and that conveys a certain feeling of comfort with a product... A superior screen, and sound, does that really make it better? I want honest opinions (I understand that is very unlikely). Come on people of XDA, everybody wants to buy a superior product...

I always try to go for galaxy phone but every time I saw their new phone screen I give up.
I really do not know why people like galaxy screen which is not bright at all, hard to read text, only when play video maybe it is good.
No disrespect as it's of course a matter of opinion.
But I think I have to take the opposite side when it comes to ingenuity. I think HTC has done pretty good this year.
Complete Aluminium design - Complete first in smartphone design
Front facing stereo speakers - No one has yet to do with these generations of Smartphones
4MP camera ultrapixel or whatever (it's a trade off for detail/low light but it still counts as ingenuity as HTC is breaking away from everyone else and being original)
Blink Feed/Sense 5- while it's not a complete new idea it is something we haven't seen implemented on Android in this way. A permanent social feed.
And the Zoe capturing video and picture at the same time may be gimmicky, but still showing ingenuity
I'd love to hear why you think opposite though

The S4 is only going to make sense for exactly two reasons, and that will be microSD and removable battery. Snapdragon means development will be much easier, and S-OFF will happen faster. I can break it down point by point and explain with the engineer's perspective why HTC is doing the right thing to make the best product, even if it doesn't sound as impressive.
You are thinking about picking the Galaxy S4S over the HTC One?

I see where you're coming from OP, HTC really lags sometimes when releasing kernel source versus Samsung
Personally, I'm a die-hard Sense man. I love it. Yet, my next will be Samsung because the super easy rooting and no need to do any "wire" tricks and all this risky stuff to root that comes with an HTC device now is a PITA. I mean Samsung comes with an unlocked bootloader versus locked HTC bootloader and also nand-locked. Makes it difficult to choose, but I'd rather go with greater dev support and higher chances of gaining root and gaining root safely.
And this has nothing to do with ingenuity. HTC is doing some nice things as notsointeresting pointed out, but the other things theyre doing is really making them dig their own grave, at least from the way i see it. I mean, the whole reason Android has gained so much ground on Apple and actually surpassed it was mainly because of the whole "open source" thing that lead to the creation of a huge developer / contributor community. Yet companies like Motorola, LG, and HTC make it really difficult to take advantage of these community-contributed material by locking their devices' bootloaders and generally making it difficult to root. In light of this, its no surprise that Samsung is so popular now
I'm seriously thinking about getting the HTC one, I am so done with Samsung and their plastic phones. My only concern with the HTC one is the non removable battery. Let me be more specific, I absolutely love rooting and flashing custom Roms on my phones. In the past when my phone would freeze and there was no other option, I would just pull the battery and presto, however, with a non removable battery what are we supposed to do if the phone freezes up on us... What are our options???

Throw it against a wall with a good case on? Lol idk, this was one of the things keeping me from getting the evo lte was it? Or whichever one had the nonremovable sdcard / battery

Press and hold power for about 10 seconds and that simulates a battery pull.

Shut up!!! It's that easy?? Omg, sorry for sounding like such a noob, it's just that the HTC one will be my first phone with a non removable battery. I had no idea that's all you had to do. Thanks, can't wait to get my one now

You know what I thought about how easy it is to root and flash roms on Samsung devices and how slightly more difficult it is to root etc htc. But then I thought could I own another plastic phone and every time the answer was "NO I couldn't" even if it was easier to root.
Easy rooting is invalid with this device. You guys have not been in the dev section? There is a superroot where it roots your device at boot with just a file and a click.

You do realise it's the same with Samsung phones as well? Just holding power button is much easier than removing your phone from its case, taking off back cover, Battery pull, replace cover, replace case....

Seriously people saying Samsung is easier to root and HTC is worse at software development support, YOU GUYS MUST NEVER OWN BOTH OF THEM! ( p.s I have hox and s2 )
Odin is pratically the dumbest software to flash an OTA or root kernel or recovery. ( Okay not dumb but hard to use ) and Samsung OTA namings are the worst. With all the alphabets naming you need to search and search again for your desired version. Whereas HTC is so easy by looking at the numbers only. And updating an OTA only requires you to fastboot flash a stock recovery then run the OTA.exe then its done.
Besides, HTC always provide bootloader unlock on htcdev.com ( yes One is already available ). And its easy as 1,2,3 which I see no points for people always complaining about it. Although no S-Off really make something a lot more difficult on HOX, ( flashing kernel is a pain, yes ) but seeing how Snapdragon processors usually have problem to achieve a S-Off this is not a big issue too.
After living one year with non removable SD n battery I actually get used to it. With non-removable battery you won't have to pull ur precious battery cover apart to restart a phone freezes at flashing ROMs ( admit it you hate to take apart your phone, my heart just aches when taking apart battery cover of S2 or incredible S ) and with non-removable SD you always clean it up so less defragmentation occurs.
I may sound biased but this is truly from someone who has experienced them both. Hope it helps.
I didn't mean "ingenuity". That's my fault. They are trying new things. The problem with doing that, is as soon as they make a niche in the market (think OG EVO), they change the concept...
I like that they are trying to be the first to do this or that, but they don't need to change every aspect of there device design with each new device... I mean, really?
I think most will agree with me on this, take the stereo sound out and fill that space with LI-PO... I would much rather the device last a little longer, than hear my phone ring 2 houses away.
And everybody claims that the screen is the number one thing about a smartphone, bullcrap. Software is, and if you can develop easier on one device than you can another, developers are probably gonna swing toward that device...
HTC needs to realise that "flagship" phones, with all their tech and wonder, are going to sell to the dev community (aside from the ONE uppers (pun intended)). But all they do is drive a wedge with there ridiculous locks and late source code releases.
Apple made it to where it is today because simplicity, people want simple devices (including devs). They are still at the top (albeit, as a fashion statement, rather than a phone now that Steve Jobs can influence the tech)... Numbers don't lie, they are the only constant in this universe, the only truly universal language.
Open-source is a brilliant idea, but when we can't use it on a device, it's basically a hard to use iPhone (locked-down), and nobody wants a device that they can neither work easily, nor change it to make it better... Which is the reason Samsung sells more devices, and has a HUGE dev following. The same reason they don't bother with a new fully aluminum chassis, because it sold before, it will again. If it is not broke, don't try to fix it.
I have my opinion, others have their opinions, I don't mind them, I just voice mine.

Developers make apps for every phone. Android = Android. You can tout software features from the brands all you want, but most people here on XDA use their own launcher and their own apps for any phone. Software is the number one thing, but all Android 4.1 and above devices are all running the exact same software in my book.
Don't get me wrong, I want to play with BlinkFeed and all, but at the end of the day I will probably go back to Zeam launcher, exDialer, GoogleVoice for texting, and the official FaceBook app... the exact same software I would use on any Android phone old or new.
EDIT: PreHome for task-switcher, MX Player for video, etc, etc, etc. The one thing I haven't found a good 3rd-party solution for is the camera app, so for that, I am excited to try this new Zoe thing (I thought of that idea 5 years ago... why take pictures when you can take 2-sec video and then make the best picture from it later).
