Just checking in - G2 and Desire Z General

Hello fellow Vision Users,
Just thoughts I'd jump on here to open up a discussion. I first acquired a T-Mobile G2 when I dropped my MyTouch Slide and had to get an insurance replacement because i had broken the Camera lens. The phone still functioned fine and i was willing to live with it til someone informed me that Insurion didn't have my color in stock so my options were to get a Black MyTouch Slide (as opposed to Red) or the G2. Naturally i decided to get the G2 (because really, who wouldn't?). It's been my favorite phone since the Sidekick LX.
Anyway, a couple months ago I acquired a Sensation 4g from my Brother when he upgraded to a Galaxy S II. I Instantly rooted and put the best rated ICS Rom on it. Been Running OpenSensation ever since. Hands down best Aosp on that phone.
Since then I continue to Keep my G2 up to date. Currently running ILWT. While I haven't used it extensively since getting the Sensation I sincerely find myself missing my G2. While ICS runs pretty flawslessly on the sensation, I'm just really not "in love" with the phone. I haven't ran any ICS Roms for very long on the G2.
Sorry for the Long read but, what I'm basically getting at is that I'm pretty bummed at the fact HTC has decided that they "currently" have no plans for Qwerty phones. People make fun of Apple for releasing the same phone over and over, but really, what's wrong with that? Seriously, if HTC decided to make The G2 again with a snapdragon S4, maybe a slightly larger screen and some minor cosmetic changes (maybe no "Z-hinge") wouldn't you buy it again? I know I would!!!
TL;DR - I LOVE THIS PHONE and i want an updated version of THIS phone sometime in the future, I couldn't care less of "Thinness."

Fyi, I'm intoxicated,
Sorry for the ramblings / grammatical errors.

Yea for the drunk/stoned speech! Here, Here and all that stuff! Have done the same thing before so no sweat! The secret is... not to admit it next time. People will just think you're a fun guy

ICS on the G2 is getting better and better. Most of the bugs have been killed by now.
I can understand your feelings of not getting a G3. It just really sucks.
I think I will just keep using my G2 for at least a year. Overclocked with ICS its still a great phone. Typing this with my hw keyboard still is way better then the virtual one..
I think that if HTC is not going to make a decent hw keyboard phone, someone else will. There are still lots of people that want a hw keyboard. If there is a market there will be a product
Ps. The G2 is not that old and HTC only gave updates for a very short time. I would think twice before getting a new HTC. This phone is more then capable to run ICS...

Like I've said, I'm currently using a Sensation, which I have on a permanent "borrow" lol. I agree, the G2 is plenty powerful for "old" hardware. And i love The hw keyboard. The only phone I'm currently considering spending my personal money on is maybe the Galaxy S3. But I'd prefer a sleek device with powerful specs and a hw keyboard.

When it comes to every even thinking about giving up the g2..all I hear from other friends who were previous g2 owners is how much they miss it?!! lol
And how there new GS2 is compatible with this app...and they miss there qwerty board! And my main focus is I don't think there is another HTC phone that will come out with a better appearance then the g2! All the material that is used seems cheap! ....in my opinion.

I am thinking of getting a new phone soon too, however, I still will be keeping my DZ with me. The main reason why I am considering getting a new phone is that I am starting to feel it being just a bit outdated. New apps and games tend to lag pretty often even with all the tweaks Ive made.
Anyway, I still love my phone. Though I dont use the HW keyboard much lately, it comes in handy when I have to type in long messages like this post.
I really hope we will see another HTC device with a keyboard soon.

You can always use a seperate (bluetooth) keyboard. I had one for my palm many years ago. Worked fine and was a bit bigger then the one from the dz (but could still fit in my pocket).

I'm noticing this as well. All the newer games, even little word games, lag my phone. If you open more than two of them, our beloved g2 just can't handle it anymore. I was using a mt4gs for a little and man, if this phone had that processor it would be so much better. Anyhow, august can't get here fast enough for me, upgrade city.

Been exclusively using my G2 for about a week now, put the Aokp port on it, and I have to say it runs fairly well, sure certain things lag but that's expected. For a single core it still handles everything just as well as any current mid range to low range phone.
Personally I Never play games on the G2 so that doesn't really matter to me. For web browsing, checking facebook, twitter, texting, web browsing and of course making calls it's still perfectly capable.

[Q] how is it, g2 owners?

Hey guys!!!
I'm just wondering what you all think of the g2. I played with the MT4G, and I like it. However, with gingerbread proally coming out soon (PROBABLY) , that'll slow updates, for the MT right? I like the keyboard on the G2 though.
I use facebook a lot
I text a lot
I like more customization
i'll probably root, overclock, and flash a custom rom when a lot of them become available.
mySense seems allright!
What phone should I get, and how do you like it?
I'm also worried that it's been a few months since it came out, and its not even at the front at my store anymore. I don't want to sign a contract and want another one before 3 months.
thanks!
I'm loving it right now and I haven't even rooted it yet. The keyboard is what sold it over the mytouch though. I'm kinda waiting for gingerbread before I go ahead and root. The hinge might turn you away though. It's not too bad on mine but some others at the store were petty bad.

thanks for your speedy reply!
haha thanks! well, i like it. i just am deciding if i like mysense, and if its worth losing that amazing keyboard. though the screen is only .1 inch smaller, the mytouch screen seems way bigger! i like it in my hand.
you said the hinge wasnt that bad? the one i played with was really sturdy. i see how it could become loose though.
By the way its not "mySense" it's called "expresso" and it's pretty much just a nasty version of HTC Sense.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.
oh, thats interesting! your probably right, but why is it called my'Sense on the forums? so its espresso?! okay. thanks!
anyway, how do you like your g2?
If you're going to root anyways, it's up to you what phone you like best. Gingerbread will probably end up merged into CM and CM is being ported to the MT4G.
You know what's good? You can make it look exactly like mt4g with 1.8mhz overclock.

I will NEVER own another piece of MyTouch garbage! Tmobile says the mytouch line is their flagship of phones, what a joke! If you buy the MT4G, you'll get updates a year or two later.
Besides the G2 is by far a better phone. Yes, I have used both including a nexus one and I feel IMO, the G2 is a better quality, built better and looks 100% better than the plastic MyTouch line.

I'm totally in love with my G2.. people told me that since i had never had an android phone that I'd want to get something more user friendly like the mytouch's mysense ui, but i like stock android and i don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. The hinge on mine is pretty sturdy so i have no complaints

mt4g looks like a cheap kids toy/ fake wanabe i-phone with crap sense- everything from the advertising to the appearance of it is repulsive (to me) the specs are awesome though. G4 is a worthy sucessor to the G1, in a class by itself, and i agree with the reviews about it having that "luxury car" feel. do what I did, get a g4, perm root it and put the real z sense rom on it, i'm sooo happy. iv had MANY phones, love the google integation, free gps!! this phone feels anything but cheap. as far as samsung goes, i'll reserve my comments, i just wish they would stick to making tv's
My girlfriend is getting jealous of my G2..She's just mad that she can't hold my attention in the same way it can...its Glorious!

G2's awesome, absolutely love it, and I'd dare say it's one of the best android phones out on the market right now and will be getting official updates long before phones with loloverlays.
That being said, if Sense is your thing, get the G2 anyway and flash any of the Desire Z sense-based roms floating in the dev section. Sense 2 > that espresso garbage on the mytouch line (and it's fast on this phone, which was nice).
I haven't had any experience with the MT 4G. But I can say the G4 is awesome. Could not be happier with it. I don't plan to root because I feel temp root is enough for my uses. But now that we have perm root it opens up so many options.
The only gripe I have with it is a slight discoloration of the soft molded plastic parts. But I don't know if everyone is experiencing this. I bought a case so don't notice any more.
I was one of the ones that had no issues from the very beginning. My hinge is decent and has never caused a problem. No random reboots etc.
Hope this helps.

Mixed Feelings
The G2 is an absolutely fantastic phone when it has strong signal or WiFi. Since the OTA, it has been stable & the memory (despite being less than 1/2 of that advertised) feels limitless.
However, the G2 behaves like a screaming 2 year old when signal is low. I don't know if it is T-mo or the phone or some combination. Apps start crashing, phone long pauses, wild fluctuations of the signal meter. It becomes absolutely unbearable. My problem is that both office and home seem to qualify as "low signal areas" - despite sometimes showing "3 bars".
If you buy it, take it on some very critical trial runs in the first 2 weeks to be absolutely sure that it will be OK in all of your stomping ground. Don't "move in" and get attached. I kept telling myself things would get better - and now I'm stuck with a very frustrating piece of hardware !

What made you choose the G2/Desire Z?

I didnt want to get the G2 at first since I was just infatuated with the vibrants screen but once I got to play with it I needed to have it!
So what made you choose the G2? And how long are you gonna stick with it?

I just love it
My last 2 phones were a HTC Kaiser and a Touch Pro 2. With both I felt I had never would need another phone.
Well, more and more things were coming to Android only, a lot of apps (Facebook, maps, google's native things) look and work a whole lot better on android, so I thought to switch. I drooled over having 720p HD video.
I wanted to stick with a qwerty.
These all made me want a Desire Z.
...and Santa brought me one... ))
I chosed da g2 after droping my mt3G on the toilet. At first I wanted the vibrant but after reading and seen pics of the g2 it was a perfect match this phone has everythig I hoped for and more rooted about 5 minutes after getting it lol

I swear, for a minute I thought your reply was my reply.
Just like you, I went form a kaiser to the TP2 and now the Desire Z. Just like you, I thought my previous phones were the mother of all inventions and I wouldnt need another phone in my lifetime . I would have upgraded in November but I thought I would just hold on to the TP2 until the middle of this year but the dreaded newton rings appeared on the TP2 last week (2nd time in 6months) so I was 'forced' to upgrade. I also must have a physical keyboard but I flirted with the Desire HD and Nexus S. The DHD was just too big and the NS didnt have a keyboard. Despite all the noise about the hinge, I bit the bullet and got the Desire Z and I thank gooness I did. Absolutely no regrets. My TP2 now feels like an early 90s phone.
Just in case anyone is interested, my TP2 with a brand new screen and absolutely no scratches + all accessories and an 8GB microSD card is up for sale @ £150.

I have to admit I use the qwerty keyboard less frequently on the DZ.
Reason one: it's good to type with touch input, it even support X9 in Hungarian (while the qwerty supports English only) so it completes a lot of words right.
Reason two: I donno if this is a question of getting used to it or not, but the keyboard is a lot worse than on the TP2. I wouldn't dis it, neither the hinge, cause it's not a problem either. It's just more awkward typing on it, plus special chars in hungarian work different than previously on the TP2.
I do not regret the TP2. There are soooo many advantages of the DZ and Android they make me forget the front camera, too.
It was the only decent device my carrier offered other than the SGS which suffered the all too well known corrupted SD due to samsung failure.
I was never too crazy about the keyboard, but have grown to like and use it.
I do miss the SA screen, screen dimensions, and the device dimensions, - but the usability added by sense is amazing. Plus the DZ seems to be much faster and more stable to me based purely on my own usage.
I've gone through so many phones and the g2 impressed me so much that I had to get it. And the fact that it was one of the first phone compatible with hspa.

I'm coming from the touch pro 2. I was looking to stick with the physical keyboard and it takes a while to get to the one on the g2. I wanted a phone to have wifi calling since I do not get any service in some of my classes at college. Android apps are no iphone apps but they work. Windows mobile is highly customizable and I like being able to have the option to do so on the G2 if ever needed. I will hold on to my G2 for as long as I can or till a dual core, physical qwerty, windows phone 7 with a 4+ screen hits T-Mobile. Well a better one than the dell venue pro.

I got the G2 because I went from a Sony Ericsson as my 1st phone, Moto Razr as my 2nd, Sidekick 3 as my 3rd, Blackberry Pearl 8120 as my 4th, and G1 as my 5th.
G1 was by far my favorite phone, with the Pearl being in 2nd. I fell in love with Android, then I learned about rooting, and that was a wrap. Went from a Haykuro 1.5, to a JesusFreke 1.5, then I learned about Cyanogen. Man, oh man, were my eyes opened by the XDA community.
From the G1, the 2nd Android phone for TMO came in the form of the myTouch 3G, and I had to have it, because I had transformed into an Android fanboy. From there, I went to an HD2, for the sole fact that I hoped that Android would be ported over to it, which thankfully, is now a reality!
I switched back and forth between the HD2 and the MT3G for a while, then I stuck with the MT3G, because I wanted the genuine Android experience. I wish I bought the N1 when it first came out, but the money wasn't there, so I had to settle.
When the G2 came knocking at TMO's doorstep and I knew about phone specs now and actually saw what the G2 had, I was very impressed, and having owned its big brother, the G1, it was fate that I had to buy it.
Yes, the G2 may have some flaws like the loose hinge and less than great camera in artificial/low light conditions, but I still love this phone and would not want to trade it for an HD7, MT4G, a Galaxy S phone, or anything else offered by TMO right now.
I love this phone and I would not change my decision of purchasing it if I had the opportunity to do it all over again.
Oh, and the fact that it is the first HSPA+ phone for T-Mobile, which there is 4G in my area also is a great perk!
simple, Cyanogen has it!

That was a selling point for sure!! I started with a Samsung Moment and then A Vibrant. I changed roms like twice a day trying to find "The one". It was kinda like internet dating, lol. I had to replace one of my Vibrants and while I was waiting for the replacement they had the G2 for $0 on black Monday. The rest is history, rooted and CM6. Physically its a beautiful phone imo, though it is protected and covered with an Otterbox. Only gripe is the hinge deal, but I swype 99.9% of the time. Its just a solid phone with awesome support, yeah Cyanogen has one. I'm waiting on something Tegra 2 based to hit TMO before I get another.
I had an original MyTouch 3G, it was slow as molasses on froyo, didn't have a keyboard, and didn't have a 3.5mm jack
the G2 is the only phone released in the last 6 months that fixes these problems. Adding in the 1.7GHz(!) overclock and solid cyanogenmod support made it even better
cyanogenmod .
ahah. I bought it before I knew cyanogenmod had it.
I had the G1, and loved it. Too bad i had to return it cuz ma dad was on my ass for always being on it. what do you except? its android!
So I heard the G2 was coming out and I almost shyt my pants.
its a sexy phone. i dont mind the hinges... one thing that sucks is no front facing camera... but o well.. maybe the G3 will own?
Got a G1 shortly after launch. Tmo upgrade came along not too long ago and so did the follow up phone... the G2. Physical keyboard is a must have for me.
I can't stand a touch screen keyboard.
The new network is also a nice perk.
Let's see.....After putting almost 50 windows roms on my HD2 and of course some Android builds. I realized the phone was getting boring by the day. I missed having a physical keyboard...better apps of course, faster speeds, and better battery life.

I wanted a good phone (better than my old omnia) with a working keyboard for which i would not pay much.
I could get a motorola flipout (found it was a poor phone), an xperia x10 mini pro (it would have been good, provided the battery was not that fast empty and unremovable), or some blackberrys with small screens. I would have had to pay more than 400$ for every interesting phone with a nice screen and a keyboard.
Then, virgin mobile made a flash offer on the desire Z. I had to pay around 80$, which was nice, and a sub 40$/month service including unlimited-yet-not-that-much-unlimited internet, unlimited texts and 2hrs/month .
So i got it. Quite impressed by it actually, worth more than what i actually thought, especially now that i know debian can be installed on it
i am new to android, i had an omnia before. The improvement in feeling is huge, but i feel quite concerned about new phones. With windows phone 6.1 i could do what i wanted on it, no need to hack around to install apps that require some special hardware access or root access and so on. I did not have to install a file browser either...
I just hope phone OS designers would stop trying to limit phone usage. Anyway they currently have not succeeded, so thats fine
Simple its indestructible..

I used to be a hard core crackberry user. My first android was the MT3G- loved it, but just couldn't get used to the touchscreen keyboard while also using a BB. (didn't care much for the iphone- my 5 year old uses it now)
When the HD2 came out, I'm glad I got it asap! The hardware was what made me want it badly.. The screen size was perfect for the onscreen kb, and it was even better when we could run android.. but I got sick of being annoyed on a daily basis. And I suffered from keyboard envy.
I was going to hold out on upgrading until Spring, as I usually did, and had been following the G2 forums since the release. Early December TMo offered me BOGO if we switched back to a contract... I couldn't refuse, and a sexy G2 arrived days later.
I love it. I was concerned with giving up screen real estate, but that quickly passed. My only issue is signal strength- I only get G where I live but forced into an unlimited 4G plan though I'm always on wifi, and the "partner service" doesn't seem to work. No faults of the G2- TMo needs to get their services straight.

T mobile out of G2 warranty phones!

Warranty phone replacement. they sent me two replacements both not acceptable. one the keyboard was messed up and the other the sd card "cage" was messed up.
15 minutes with tmobile and they offer me a sidekick 4g as a replacement for my G2. I laugh and him and tell him that's not going to work. I tell him i am not a 17 year old girl and that that phone is not even in the same league as the HTC G2. Supervisor requested. 30 minutes later and he still offers me a side kick. Supervisor requested again. 45 min i am able to get my G2 again when they have them in stock. Not sure when. Supervisor demanded and now i'm getting really rude. 55 minutes with tmobile and still no supervisor but now i am offered a HTC Sensation. I'll live with that. Though i am sad to have to part ways with my G2. I really had no want to get rid of it. Guess it is what it is.
This happened today from 11am to 12pm. Just an FYI.
I'm pretty sure there was a few available online few weeks back, Try ordering online you might have better success or ebay could be another option.

Basically they gave you a hard time because they were trying to get rid of old hardware and you wouldn't accept it, so you ended up getting a hardware upgrade for free(yes upgrade, aside from the physical keyboard the hardware is better).
I went through the same thing with Bell getting replacements for two Dexts, none for replacements they tried to give me Blackberries :/ I wouldn't accept and fought and ended up with two Desire Z's Shouldn't need to fight about it, its their problem not ours if they cant/won't keep hardware....

the lack of physical keyboard doesn't bother me since i never use it. I got the G2 because it was basically stock android and tmo told me they weren't going to release a nexus s 4g. Trying to stays true AOSP. It looks like it will be harder to stay AOSP with the sensation but with the help of devs in that forum i'll figure it out. They still have nowhere near the development that the G2 has. and i am a flash whore so that might get annoying. Guess its time for me to learn some dev skills.
and yes the sensation IS an upgrade. All i wanted was a shinny new to me G2. but once they offered me a sidekick i knew i would hold out for the sensation.
My G2 kicked the bucket last week and they sent me a refurbished one with a broken MicroSD slot (Not sure if it was the same as the OP's). I called them immediately and without even needing to escalate it they said they're out of G2's and had to replace it with a different phone of my choice. It was either the MyTouch 4G Slide, LG Optimus Q or the Sensation.
Guess they're really running out of G2s and are just handing out upgrades now.
Hmmm. My G2 is doing the stupid cardock crap non stop. Maybe I will replace it with a Sensation. I'm due for an upgrade anyway, so why not get the sensation for free until the HTC One X or SGSIII hits shelves.

Development is really starting to pick up on that phone. It has been officially added to the Virtuous Team lineup as well, not to mention the slew of new roms that have popped up in the past 2 months.
Made the switch about a month ago and it's a great phone. Liking it more everyday. The G2 has some serious growing pains coming its way. It will handle ICS, but we are already starting to reach the limit of the hardware. If I wanted to do anything intensive (GTA 3, running MANY apps), you could tell the phone was struggling at times. And this was on gingerbread. With ICS running in the background, I can only assume that it will get worse. That's why I jumped ship.

I think that we are going to see some really good ICS roms soon now that Qualcomm has finally released proper GPU driver binaries for the chipset. Just because you're seeing problems with ICS right now doesn't mean that these problems won't be fixed in the future. You have to remember, all the ICS roms running on the G2 right now are in Alpha or Beta stages, and aren't full, proper releases yet.
Although, I agree, owning a MT4G Slide would be awesome
Here's a fairly in depth review of the 4G Slide that I made coming from the G2...

The 4G Slide is one of the best qwerty androids out. And judging by how often they come out, it will be for quite some time. You won't regret it. It is everything the G2 should have been under the hood

My touch Q?

Guys what's the difference between the Mytouch 4g and the Q, can they use the same firmware or no???
Mytouch 4G is made by HTC running HTC sense with "Mysense" overlay. It is an older but more powerful phone with more ram and a better screen.
The Q is made by LG running LG **** with a "Mysense" overlay. It is new but has horrible construction and the screen tends to be unresponsive.
Hit thanks if i have helped.
P.S. NO, you cant flash Mytouch 4g roms on the Q
So basically no one cares about the Q, and is forever never going to have a customer firmware?
THat really sucks, there are a lot of ****ty phones on this forum that have there own forum, why not the Q, at least you can root it for godsakes.

Should of done your research before you bought it.
hind sight is always 20/20.
If you want a phone with a lot of development then you need to 1) do research 2) buy a popular phone. not a cheap one.
doesn't matter I'll reject the shipment and once again by another phone on craigslist or ebay, I'll buy another Mytouch 4G, so I can have the EEPROM die on me again. This will be my 4th smartphone in a row. Whatever.

I'm not attacking you. In any way/shape/fashion or form. If i did, please point it out to me.
You're just coming across as that we are the reason the LG MyTouch has no development sector.
And we have nothing to do with that.
As my first post on this excellent forum I would like say, neidlinger, you helped me alot with which direction to go when I needed help with rooting my glacier(My Touch 4g). Some people just don't know what they are getting into with these devices. Sounds like OP has alot of $$$ to spend. I could use some lol. Anyway, just my 2 cents.
At least the LG MyTouch has CM7 with more roms in development.

I bought my daughter the Lg "Q" a few months ago and to be honest it's pretty compatible to the glacier (mine) as far as hardware is concerned.
The problem everyone is having here is the fact that there are more advanced devices coming to the market and for people that can't just shell out $500+ for a new device get shafted on the forums. It should be the other way around the phone companies guilt you into a more expensive device if they can the forums should support the community as a whole.
There are exceptions with devices that don't have the quality that others do but this device does everything the glacier does. There should be a vote to see if there's enough people with the device to make a forum for it that way no one gets left out without a chance to be heard at least and if there's not then it was given a chance to be denied for a valid reason.

Say whaaa! Dude you gotta let me get whatever it is ur smoking. My wife has a Q. I'm not gonna lie, the eye candy that the Q is rocking looks great but there is no way that that pos phone is comparable to the HTC mytouch. Hell my old HTC mytouch slide 3g ran better than the Q. And there are a couple threads dedicated to the LG MyTouch. Use the search function and you'll find them.

I'm not saying their exactly the same (even if that's what you got from it) I'm saying they are both within specs of each other you can also look for your self if you have both like I do, I don't use it or honestly haven't even touched it aside from buying it. I'm trying to say if there are as many people out there that would like a forum to work on it and it's enough for it to be worth looking into then there should be some system in place for voting on whether or not a forum gets put up.
Just because people don't have the money to bang out a spare $500 every time a new device comes out doesn't mean they should also get the shaft on a site that is solely community based.
Made my point, done.

I feel ya man, But as a rule of thumb HTC devices seem to always be supported better and longer on XDA, All the others maybe save for Samsung is always a crapshoot for development! And Its not just about specs. HTC hardware is just better known then LG's and has superior build quality. IF custom roms is your thing its best to research first to see if your phone has a forum and make sure it is a international phone. The more people that use it, the better chance of it being developed for.

My sister and niece have the mytouch q (i told my sis to get mt4g or 4g slide and she got the mytouch 4g that also slides...smh). They both hate it, and I don't like it either. It's laggy, ugly, and nothing compared to mt4g imo.

The q tuns way better then the MT 3g slide my mom had both... the LG and HTC 4gs have the same specs hardware wise. Its just you guys have better support on xdA.

Nice try, but not even close. The Mytouch 3g slide and 4g were OUTSTANDING phones... I still have them both. The mt4g is still one if the best phones out today. The mt4g slide was ok... And the mytouch q was a mess. That's just a fact. HW specs and/or amount of development has nothing to do with what makes a good phone if the specs aren't used properly.

My wife has the LG e739 and I have the htc mytouch 4G. The HTC is far superior in both build quality and processing. The LG is extremely slow. I even rooted it and took out all the bloated ware and it is still laggy and unresponsive about 100 percent of the time. May 11 is our upgrade date and we both are going to get the one s from tmo. I do however like the graphics on the LG. They did a great job making everything Look pretty but that phone is slow as crap.

My brother had the Q, & I find it odd that you like the graphics? That was the most obvious thing I noticed in the 1st 5 seconds I held it! Looked like the Optimus T. I just don't like LG's approach to the MyTouch. I think it was a poor effort & TMobile must have thought so as well. HTC is still superior, & I don't expect the Huwei MyTouch to be much better.

Moving on?

As the GS3 is out, the GS2 will be dropping in price. I'm toying with the idea of jumping ship. I'll be keeping the DZ as spare as I do everytime I change.
Just wandering if anyone feels this a bad move. The GS2 section is highly active with native ICS and lots of good devs I know from my days with GS1.
The only thing preventing me is the amazing development going on here. This is by far the most active forum I have been a part of.
Unless someone wants my DZ of course
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
personally, I'd buy the DZ again if it where to break today... All those new and shiny smartphones are great, however I really love the hardware keyboards and dislike the onscreen keyboards (I've tried many). I am hoping/waiting for a newer smartphone like the DZ! (If any manufacturer where to release a smartphone with a Meamo derived OS and a hardware keyboard, I'll buy it on pre-order!)
I know what you mean. HW keyboards are good. My tab is a asus transformer with keyboard dock. I don't mind the onscreen kb's on phones. I regularly use the DZ in portrait mode.
Just feel like a change and the GS2 is still a top spec phone. I realise it sounds like I'm trying to convince myself. I'm actually trying to convince myself not to
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
Edit: I agree with you on meamo with a keyboard. Had a go on a nokia N9 and its was great.
If you are trying to convince yourself to NOT get a new phone: Do you actually *need* a new phone? Or do you just want to have another new gadget to fool around with?
Hmm you caught me I am a bit of a serial gadget swapper. The DZ is one of longest I've had a phone (got it in sept). Its the fifth android device I've had in 2 years. All of which I've rooted etc. You're right, I don't NEED a new phone. I am on a sim only contract purely so I can swap to whatever I want.
Do you think we will get much better performance out of the DZ? I can't help but think we are getting the best possible out of this.
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
I will buy One X, but I will use Desire Z as my tablet, I will flash AOKP in tablet mode, and voila! It will be pretty hard to don't have a keyboard, but I don't need the keyboard on 4.7 screen, I've tried to write something on the onscreen keyboard, and it was almost as DZ, but it will never be the same.
Sent from my HTC Desire Z using XDA
I will be on board with the sgs3 as soon as tmobile gets it. My contract is up in august so should be just in time. Can't wait. The hw keyboard is a thing of the past for me. These phones are getting larger, and it makes it easier for someone like me with big fingers. Now on the g2, a hw kb is a must.

Well, I've been toing and froing with orange about various things and they offered me something i couldn't refuse. A heafty discount. Along side an early upgrade of a moto razr. Having played with it for a few hours I am very happy with it. No ics yet but literally any day now.
Going to keep the dz as a spare and also keep an eye on development here.
Thanks for all the hard work. Its been emotional

I see no reason to buy a new phone. G2 is still fast and has a nice slide out keyboard and build quality.
I'm thinking the same myself... My contracts up in about 2 weeks. Is it worth it to wait for the Galaxy S3, because it seems like the specs are pretty close to the Galaxy S2?
EDIT: I'm waiting. It comes to T-Mobile 2 days after my contract ends so I figure, why not! Excited already.
Just thought I'd update you on what I did.
I got. Motorola RAZR on an offer I couldn't refuse. Its lame that moto haven't pushed out ICS yet but I am running a leak that came out a couple of weeks ago. It runs great and I'm really happy.
In the long term I will probably change to whatever nexus device comes out in the autumn. Or the galaxy s3.
Going to pop in here from time to time as I have given my dz to my dad to see if he likes having a smart phone. He'll probably keep it and get a new battery for it.
