Windows 8 Games Performence

Hi i'm playing prototype.Usually i plays it on win 7 but today i played it on win 8.
but to be my surprise i was getting 2-5 fps gain.And also graphic quality was better than Win 7.Is that possible?

Yeah, i got better performance in TF2 too. But Borderlands is not working.

Seem like games compatible..

Windows 8 uses a little less resources and the newer kernel is a bit more optimized and efficient compared to Windows 7. The quality is only possible depending on your catalyst AI or Nvidia AI settings.

Windows 8 is slower than winsows 7 in the games?
I said ok! Well I tested some games and emulators (Halo ce and Dolphin emulator) and I realized that while windows uses more resources 8 windows 7 is better in terms of the fluidity of the games and emulation.
anyone know why?

Odd, bf3 runs well....as do most of my games.. however it won't run in fullscreen. Also worth noting is that aion (my favorite mmo) simply does not start up at all...
Anyone know a free way to emulate windows 7 within windows 8 without having access to a DVD drive perchance?

windows 8 is still in beta and it is performing quite well in its beta stages also !!
i bet there is a lot more action packed in windows 8 !!
also the ati/nvidia drivers are available for download for windows 8 !!
compatibility is the issue with pre windows 8 applications !!
but still windows 8 is simply great ! !!

I have tested Win 8 with Battlefield 3 and many other Games ( its my Gaming and Workspace System ) and i must say, that W8 is in all Categories better than Windows 7 ...
The Gaming Performance is at the Moment a Little Bit better, but in the Beta that will be increased - i hope ...

The only way some games will run in full screen is if you use win7 set up instead of the metro, I found this to be true with battlefield 3

Somehow Windows 8 use resource better than Windows 7.
But you can try to reinstall FRESH Windows 7 and install only one game you gonna play, you would have the same result.
I still don't know why when i install more Applications/Softwares, i lost my FPS while playing games, even they don't run on Background.
Tested with both Modern Warfare 2/3, Battlefield 3, Battlefield Bad Company 2.
I got like the whole smooth gameplay when i had just reinstalled Windows and nothing else but Steam and my games.
But when i start to get my Microsoft Office / Adobe Photoshop in, the Framerate start to drop.

Has anyone tried BF3?

its because your hard drive becomes fragmented,and its slower to load resources,so more cpu time is wasted waiting for objects to be read.

wrong, i have my Disk Defrag every Wednesday...

I install windows 8 on my w500 games played great on it. So I believe when windows 8 comes out will optimized for games.

I played WoW, Battlefield 2, and Starcraft without issue, this was back in September however. My understanding is that the desktop environment thus far is fairly untouched so drivers and games should work perfectly.

Thought I would start a thread on what everyone has Win8 running on(as far as touch screen devices) and if you could, also post how it's running

I did not put it on a touch screen, but it's been working good on my 2(1/2)-3year old laptop.

i installed win8 my sony UX57(ssd 32G) and fujitsu P1510(ram 1G, hdd 60G)
it work well (have some probrem same as 7)

No touch, but i installed it on my HP Pavilion a6600f thats about 2.5 years old, runs great, but has some issues with metro (only in "Copper")

I installed Windows 8 on my MacBook Pro (2.4ghz Core2Duo). I enjoyed my experience but I needed something significantly more stable to flash ROMs. I did not feel very comfortable using Odin or RSD Lite on Windows 8. I switched back to Windows 7.
I am greatly excited for the first Public Beta and hopefully it brings more stability.

I wish I had internet like yours.

I installed it on Dell Latitude D630 and it works great. Just having driver issues with Nvidia video card that's built in. Other than that everything else works great.

Well apart from the obvious re-build LOL. The case is 10 Years old anyway...

I ask, between AMD and Intel who would you want in your phone our tablet and why?
My answer its AMD, their apu's I find to be very impressive vs the atom or laptop core I series. Id love to have a Radeon HD 6400 series gpu to play my Android games on =)

Hands down amd. Basicly intel makes a hell of a cpu but graphics not so much. Amd is not to far behind intel. But imho they make the best graphic cards and have the best technology in the gpu. So if they decided to make tablet and phones cpu and gpu i think they will have be very good and being that its phone and tablet maybe some of there gpu tech can be used in the cpu since the cpu for phones and tablets work a bit different than a desktop cpu or laptop cpu for that matter. Sorry for the caps im at work i have to use caps all day

AMD is the best, all day, everyday

i'll stick with Samsung CPUs

I agree there, but with AMD llano and later bulldozer based APU, any processor gap between Intel and AMD will be gone. These two companies entering the mobile arena will make competition skyrocket, and that only means good things for us consumers =) they would push the drive for faster graphics and processors even quicker than it already its moving

Remember people you get what you pay for and AMD is CHEAP, and no I'm not impressed with their GPUs either

AMD is not cheap. They have graphics processors at all price points offering more bang for buck than the equivalent Nvidia offering.

Amd is cheap, well slower than intel

also keep in mind that AMD is bringing around their first major Arch revision since 2004, and also keep in mind that for a while AMD smoked intel with Athlon and Athlon XP aswell as with Athlon64, intel didnt regain lead till the core series. AMD GPU on the other hand are consistently offering more for your Dollar than NVIDIA, I have a Radeon HD4870 1gb and can still max out ALL my games short of DX11 specific features (tesselation, etc.) Intel processors since the beginning of the core series have been great, but their GPU leave alot to be desired. Until I can play Borderlands on an intel APU with a better framerate than an AMD APU I'm gonna go with AMD. If you can really name a single desktop application or game where there is a big enough difference between AMD and Intel (desktop as in common user applications) then you will get my kudos. Also your going to want to be looking into AMD and Intels new archs like bulldozer and ivy bridge. Bulldozer will be out in just over a week and we'll see what AMD has up there sleeve with their first major arch change in forever =] (and now that they will have all the instruction sets intel has also =D)
EDIT: and by difference I mean more than 10-15sec or more than 10-15FPS

I'd like to see a Cyrix chip in my next phone please...

really? my 5770 couldn't even consistently pull 30fps in css (which is, what, 7 years old now?) on high settings. and when i added a second 5770 in crossfire and play css i'm guaranteed a bsod within a minute (which is funny cause i hadn't seen a bsod for years before getting an ati card).

I do actually =P havent had any problems, and actually had more problems getting my friends Nvidia working in linux =/ My build runs great and I can OC to 3.5ghz on my phenom II 920 2.8ghz(i got one when they first came out =D, and could go higher if i didnt skimp out on the MB and only spend 90$ on one =3)
PS, this isnt a desktop/laptop question, think of TABs / Phones when making an answer =]

consider yourself lucky. i've never, ever had a problem with nvidia in linux. with ati, i tried fedora, opensuse, mandriva, and ubuntu. ubuntu would work in 9.10 but only the stock kernel (from the live cd), any kernel update would kill everything. finally i was able to get 10.10 installed, and 11.04 hasn't given me any problems. but i still can't run any other distro.
and sure, this isn't about desktops or laptops, but android is linux and if their driver support sucks in linux, i expect it to suck in android as well.

Ati/Amd gpu's are the best point blank nothing to it there should be no argument :-/

yeah but dont you think if they did enter that market they would provide the needed support for the android based devices? I havent had any problems for years with AMD GPUs and linux, and Every driver update I just install and go no matter kernel or distro I have used (I mostly use Ubuntu though). I guess it really is based on experience =P I see it this way though, as of right now you can max out Left4Dead 2 on an AMD APU, you get maybe 13fps on an Intel. The laptop market is where we can best compare, and Idk about you but if I'm getting a Tab or phone I'm not looking for something to crunch data (which we all know intel does better), I want a rich and smooth UI, games that look amazing, and light weight and low power consumption (IMO both companies are doing ALOT better with TDP but still have a ways to go)

I'm pretty sure Debian would run way faster than Windows 8 on your Dell. My old Toshiba Satellite is running Ubuntu 11.10 way faster than it did Windows Vista.

of course debian or at least just run windows 7 windows 8 is not PC friendly as much as windows 7 its a dev preview not even a beta yet so its not even worth keeping as a daily OS because march will come around and then youll need to install the beta

Windows will never be faster than linux, especially on slower/older computers!

When it comes to net books.
I've found that
Linux is faster than windows 7 32 bit. 64 bit windows is terrible to run.
Windows 8 64 bit runs great almost as good as Ubuntu.
Both the net books I've installed this on are atom based and have maxed memory.

windows 8 is much lighter and quicker than the older versions of windows but i think linux still takes the cake this round but it is still just a dev preview that we are seeing now.

Windows V Linux
There is a lot of populous opinion being regurgitated here. I have to agree though that on older hardware Linux has a better chance of performing well but just like any OS if you want it to feel snappy you wont be able to load it with all of the bells and whistles that a new machine will support.
Beyond that I've done some evaluations between Windows and Linux, Ubuntu specifically. Using a couple of models of laptop ranging from 1-3 years old Windows 7 booted faster and consistently ran better/faster than the same pc on linux. We ran the test as side by side comparisons then switch OS's and reran the test.
These were all default installs with only drivers or applications being tested added where necessary.
Overall Windows required fewer clicks and less time to perform the tasks being tested. The only area where Ubuntu was a clear winner wan in a simpler install and setup process than windows. After that it either tied or lost to windows.
We didn't include cost or time to train in our evaluation.

Well yeah, vista is the worst system hog Microsoft has ever released.
Windows 8 supposedly is the lightest Os Microsoft has released in a long time. I've seen it work better on some computers than XP. Just my 2¢

Well, Windows Vista was a hot mess, so I don't think that's a good metric
I've found that Windows 7 (and perhaps Windows 8, but it won't slim down enough to fit on my netbook) was much better at handling disk IO than Ubuntu. This was particularly important for my netbook, which has a very cheap 4gb SSD that locks up on writing. Windows XP and Ubuntu were about the same on this problem, Windows 7 seemed to understand that it needed no access time and a few other tweaks, and handled that right out of the box.
In your case, though, given the processor, I'd say Debian would probably run faster. If you want to do some anecdotal benchmarks, though, I'd be curious to see them.

Not really a fair question yet, as Win 8 is not even in beta yet....so none of us really know. I am sure that there is a significant amount of debugging loaded in the current Win 8 dev preview.
That being said, you mentioned old hardware. In that case I believe most responders are correct: debian/linux will likely run faster on that old hw.

I run win7 (re-installed win7 ultimate to get rid of asus bloatware) and ubuntu 11.04 on my Asus G53SX-A1 in dual boot. This laptop packs new hardware.
My observations:
Ubuntu with all graphical enhancements runs faster, and boots significantly quicker than win7. The installation of ubuntu was also quicker than that of windows.
Ubuntu picked pretty much all the hardware and with a few tweaks I got all laptop features working (function keys and all). Overall installation of "ubuntu 11.04 + tweaks and a couple of drivers (new wireless driver and newest binary nvidia drv from PPA" was half that of Windows 7 ultimate + all the drivers from cd and website.
I recently also switched from ubuntu to debian 6.0.3 on my fujitsu e8210 laptop and noticed that debian runs faster and more stable than ubuntu.

An intel atom is usable in 2022?

Can i use an intel atom for basic tasks and old games??

Intel atom N450 1.66Ghz.
2gb of ram 667Mhz.
160gb 5400 RPM WD blue hard drive (I'm gonna replace it with an 120gb ssd because is failing)

From looking at random videos online, it could (hopefully) run Quake 3 Arena at around 40fps on Medium. I don't know if it could run many other games, though. The best I can see it doing is emulation of old consoles like N64, and very simple games from the 90s-2000s.

My suggestion: Stay away from consumer oriented versions of Windows. Use Enterprise if you can. I use Enterprise 2021 LTSC on my gaming PC; it comes with none of the bloat that the consumer versions do.
The performance of your rig depends heavily on the GPU, but the Atom is not intended as a desktop/gaming chip. I wouldn't expect much.
