Defy+ MB526 battery lasts only for 2 days max - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have Motorola Defy+ almost 6 months an I tried almost every custom and official roms and the battery never lasted more than 2 days.
Data is not enabled, wifi disabled, GPS disabled, brightness set to minimum, no calls, no sms received phone only lays down with screen off and I turn the screen on only for checking the time.
Tried with task killers and without them, tried battery fix, battery calibration, every trick for extending battery life that I found on this forum but there is no change.
Now I have WhiteRabbit Edition 1.5.2 on my defy+ and still battery drains out.

My defy battery finishes off in 8 hours and I am still happy.

Lol...an android device lasting for 48 hours is a dream..and you still have problems
Sent from my MB526 using xda premium

but defy is supposed to give more than 2 days at complete standby..
make sure it is sleeping properly...check whether if any app is not letting it sleep peacefully

Just to give some point of reference
I've got 2nd defy now (first green, now red), with exactly the same battery experience, both on last CM7 nightlies, no special tricks or settings.
1. wifi on all the time, mobile data off, gps off, few calls, few smses per day - no problem to be on for 4 - 5 days, but as I check emails and read news, then 3 days
2. mobile data 2G/3G on - 1 day is a success

Only 2 days?
Sent from my MB526 using XDA

2 days is already very good

With this kind of usage anything under a week is really bad. The OP is not using his phone for anything and has data and wifi switched off all the time. A Defy(+) that just sits on its ass doing nothing should not eat more than 0.5% per hour.
Unless you live in a remote place with really bad network coverage. If your phone is struggling to stay connected to the cell tower with only one bar of signal in the status bar the GSM radio will suck your battery dry.

Try to test it with Aeroplane mode set to ON. charge it fully, then see how much time does it take to wear down..

Battery issue - new question

I know battery issues have been discussed over and over in this forum, but I have a question that I couldn't find the answer to in this forum.
I have an unlocked rogers x10 that's updated to R2BA020 that I'm using on Fido network, the phone is always roaming because I'm on Fido.
I'm thinking this is why my battery life sucks. I tried everything, task killers, juice defender, dim screen, full discharge.
Does the phone use more juice if it's roaming?
Yes, but it doesn't make a very large difference. If you're worried about constantly roaming, take a look at android, which let's you turn off Amsterdam on 3G.

Have you tried spare parts or something similar to check your battery usage? It lets you see what component is using the most battery. Even the Battery Usage option under Settings->About Phone should tell you where your juice is draining.

If he doesn't want to download spare parts, he could just dial *#*#4636#*#* (did I get that right?) in his dialer to get to the same menus.

I'm still having battery life issues as well on my Rogers x10a.
I was at 100% as of 12:00pm and it's now at 87% 5:00pm.
According to the battery info I've used:
Voice Calls - 30% (10m 35s)
Cell Standby - 28%
Phone Idle - 22%
Display - 11%
Android System - 4%
ADW.Launcher - 3%
3G on, WIFI off, BT off
No idea what is draining my battery so much
I'm on Fido as well, though I don't see a roaming icon anywhere.
Are you sure you're roaming?

2.6%/hr with actual use (not sleeping overnight) is not bad at all. a 4inch screen, 3g connected all the time smartphone will not get great battery life if you actually use it. many people talk about how they get a couple of days or more on a single charge but there is no possible way for this to happen unless you are barely touching your phone. the best i can hope for is a full days use as i use my phone all day and evening.
sometimes an app sits in the background and uses lots of juice, so if you want to make sure that is not happening you might want to do a hard reset and not install any apps for a day and see how battery life it. you can add back apps slowly so that you will be able to tell if one is causing your phone to use too much juice.
the other things you can try is not to use widgets that auto update all the time or try locking your phone to 2g for the day, turning screen brightness down to the lowest level when possible. stuff like that will help. since i updated to the r2 generic rom my battery life has been good enough. i could always use more, but i use my phone too much to expect more.
Thanks I use my phone a lot as well but hearing all these awesome battery life stories had me expecting more. Guess I'll live with what I have.

It drives me nuts too but the reality is that we all use our phones differently so while some people are happy getting two days of use by barely using their phone I just can't do that. I rely on my phone for too many different things, so if I can get through one day I am fine. It was a shock for me initially as I was using a blackberry 9700 and it had a very small screen and long battery life

I took my phone off charge 6 hours ago and I have 79% left as I type.
I did a 5 minute phone call, 10 minutes browsing, 2 minute YouTube video and I turned on WiFi for 30 minutes and Bluetooth for 45 minutes.
I checked the settings and it says:
Display 48%
Standby 18
Phone Idle 13%
Voice call 13%
I've been switching options on and off for the last few weeks that I have x10 and the conclusion is => turn of APN when you don't use it and the battery last for 3 days. Only problem I can think of is mail push but you can always check mail every 30min. There is this "APN on/off" widget that makes switching APN on and off pretty easy so there shouldn't be too much problems.
Doesnt make a difference here.. wifi and 3g cane my battery!!

I removed JuiceDefender, and I installed advanced task killer, and APN on/off widget and the battery life is much better now. I turn data off when I'm not using the phone and I kill tasks about 3-4 times a day. The screen is dimmed to 15%.
As per Android system info:
Up time: 1 days, 3 hours, 1 minutes, 59 seconds
Up time (without sleep): 0 days, 4 hours, 23 minutes, 8 seconds
17 % battery life left
I checked the settings and it says:
Display 40% (time on 2h 33m 58s)
Standby 29%
Phone Idle 22%
Wifi 4%
Android System 3%
Broswer 2%
Quick question for advanced users, I noticed that Android sys info says up time without sleep is just over 4 huors while the phone settings says 2h 33m, any idea which one is more accurate? I'm assuming up time without sleep = time screen is on.
Switch off GPS. I read about it and how it improved batteries. Bloody true. Its great advice.

Time without sleep = time screen is on
IF nothing isn't keeping the phone awake.
The phone setting says 2h 33m because it counts the time that the phone was asleep AND the screen was off.
The real percentage is the one Android sys info gives you.
It is rather normal for the phone to have slightly more awake time that screen on time, as some applications work even when the screen is off (push Gmail, the clock, some widget etc...).
As long as your wake time is not 100%, you're just fine.

Calibrate your battery

We all want the maximum out of our battery and the corresponding indication. Found this thread in Desire forum on calibration of the battery and can be usefull for Wildfire aswell....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755903
Just did the full cycle myself.....will report back results.

The wildfire has a really good battery already
No need to calibrate imo. Can last 2+ days for me when I don't abuse the wifi and games.
First feedback.....no noticable difference seen.....What do seem to help is to charge you phone longer even after green light indicates that battery is full.....For me than takes longer to go from 100 to 99.

How do you do this? I'm doing everything, I underclock my phone down to 160-245 Mhz, I turn on my wifi only when I have to, I keep my phone in airplane mode permanently, I constantly run on display turned down to max. And yet I've yet got to witness my phone going over 18h uptime. Do you run a custom ROM or something?

I find the same thing, and have even been thinking of returning it because it can't last longer than 24hrs. I have even restored to stock and hard reset, so no apps added or anything, BT/WIFI off and the battery life still sucks.

Yes I've tried openfire rom and wildpuzzle rom. Battery lasts as I have stated. I also use setcpu to set up profiles when phone screen is off to help it a little
Would also like to add that on the stock rom, the battery lasts long as well but custom rom is better
My phone is a stock. But as you can see, the battery life leaves a lot of room for improvement. How can I increase ir?
Not sure, but after rooting my battery life improved signigficantly, and it also charges fast than before... htc wildifire.
ok so i charged my phone to 100% and left it on my table untouched last night when i got to sleep, left it in my pocket today at uni without using wifi/games, just to check the time, is currently still at 99% with up time of 14hrs so far.
and if you want to maximise your battery life with stock rom, lower brightness, disable auto sync of accounts, disable 3g if you're not using it, try juice defender, i think that might help you guys.

Hmm strange, I have installed it and icon shows normally in application list.
I went through the calibration process and my battery life has increased significantly. Currently I have 5 hours and 12 minutes of uptime with occasional phone calls and some wifi usage - battery is at 99%.
I find that battery life is all about how strong ur signal is.
At home i get a full 3g signal, battery lasts about 30 hours with my syncs on all day, couple of hours of wifi and maybe 30 mins of gaming and about 30mins of phone calls.
When i'm at work and the signal fluctuates i get about 20 hours average.
When i was in a restaurant for a party recently from 7pm to midnight, there was hardly any signal and i used about 60% of the battery in 5 hours!
At the end of the day if the battery lasts for 18hours with all my stuff turned on then i won't complain as the phone does everything you need except make the tea!
I mean what's the point of turning all the smartphone stuff off? Might as well just go and buy a Nokia.

My experience with GREAT Galaxy S battery life!

Hello Everyone!
I made this thread hoping I can shed some light to those getting very poor battery life. I was also getting very poor battery life, till I went and exchanged my phone for a new one. If you're getting very poor battery life (even after wiping your phone or installing a clean firmware), there is definitely something wrong with your phone or your battery.
I own a i9000m bought from Wireless Wave. I've unlocked the phone and am now using it on Rogers.
My previous phone, I was draining 25% of my battery to just get through 6 hours of standby while I slept. I had juice defender on and autokiller memory optimizer. I turned off all syncing and didn't even use a live wallpaper. My phone was rooted and also had lagfix (which I soon removed). One thing I do remember doing is not charging to 100% when I first got the phone. I did accidentally let it drain to 0% cause I had to use it right away.
After exchanging for a new phone and charging it to 100% right away, I was getting the following results. I have juice defender and nothing else. I changed my band to be WCDMA only. I even have a live wallpaper on. Last night my phone idled for 9 hours and it only drained 2%! Last night going out, I had a moderate to heavy (fbook, 3g, gps, text, youtube) usage pattern on my phone and it only drained 40% after 6 hours of use.
I don't know what else to say, but I'm letting those with battery problems know that the SGS is capable of great battery life. And if all your optimizing and tweaks aren't doing it, then you may want to consider exchanging for a new phone if you still have warranty.
I have a great battery life too in my device compared too the another smartphone i used in the past and now compared to Ip4 and N8 in this devices the bat drain is much higher. So im positive surprised with
the galaxy battery performance, i only use the push email everything else is turned off, livewallpaper and so on..

My phone came with JM7 firmware. My battery life is just excellent, not needing a recharge before a few days with my use
Running JPM here, with darkyy's raw metal ROM, my battery life went up by at least 40% - %50. I was losing 1% per 5 - 10minutes of usage, now its more upwards of half an hour of usage.
I think the phone has very good battery life if you understand what can cause battery drain and adjust it accordingly.
I am now gettining 5% drain per 24 hours on (almost) standby. This would give me about 20 days of standby which is crazy.
Here is my setup:
UK 16 Gb Galaxy S with Eclair JM6 and Voodoo lagfix
Set network to GSM (2g)
Disable internet usage (with APNDroid)
Disable WIFI, Sync Off, GPS Off (with power widgets)
Just before I go to bed, I run Advanced Task Killer and kill anything that doesn't need to be on memory (inlcuding Advanced Task Killer itself).
Using your phone WILL spend a lot of battery. Browsing the internet on 3g is a battery killer. This means that if you do something on your phone that maintains an active 3g connection, it WILL drain your battery in about 3-6 depending on your 3g coverage.
WIFI is better, but again you are looking at something between 6-12 hours of continuous usage, so make sure you only use it when you need it.
Finally, if you need to have your emails the instance they arrive, go for a blackberry because it has the only way of pushing email without maintaining a constant data connection.
I don't need this so I am extremely happy with my phone and the battery life I can get out of it.
I hope this helps.
Have my phone set for 2G with wifi always on.
Use wifi at home.
2G is enough for all normal syncs, and if I need more speed for anything else I temporarily switch to 3G for that.
This way a single charge last me well over 24h under normal usage. Don't even know exactly how much.
With the phone set to 3G, the same usage patern will eat a full charge in something like 8h.

JPM Rom with everything except bluetooth turned on my battery lasted 3 days with low usage (skype a few times and some phone calls and a bit of wifi web-browsing.)
Much better than my wife's iPhone 4... Normally charge it every 2 days.
I am very happy with the phone, just a couple of bug fixes and I would really like it if Swype did some level of contextual checking of words to help minimise unnecessary corrections (perhaps they do already, but it is certainly not well implemented/sophisticated enough).

Eclair for both. No Froyo.
what i wish to have is greater control over the phone, more easily.
Some kind of powertop GUI that let you see the power usage per process.
So you could plain uninstall apps installing ****ty services consuming the battery.
Likewise i'd like *real* control over which background services are running. I mean running an auto killer wtf? Horrible design!
I just want to switch off a service and that it doesnt start again 5 min later thank you very much.
Even the task manager is quite bad. You see last started apps but you don't know which one is running right now. And if its running and backgrounded since a while and you started other apps.. it might very well not even show up in the list anymore. Horrible design again.
Saying all that because stock the phone battery is excellent, installing a couple of popular apps kills it..

Sure thing. And thanks. KIES offered an update from JM1 baseband and JM2 build version. We'll see how the new ROM performs in about 3 days. Unfortunately don't have spare time to do that sooner. I suspect there's huge difference within the baseband versions.

Is it possible that the reading on the phone is wrong? When you say you are getting 24 hours are you letting it run flat.
Alternately is it saying the battery is running low and you recharge before it goes flat?
Just wondering if the meter is simply giving incorrect information.
Been 24 hours since last recharge. Lost 6% so far. Running JP6 Froyo. Rooted. Network Data Off. During this 24 hours, just used Angry birds-30mins and ColorDict 5mins. Haven't installed any unnecessary app.
Had lost 1% on standby after 14hrs with no usage. Thats amazing. Very Happy user.
Also want to tell u guys that GPS with active Data connection and Google Maps running and display on took approx 1% of battery every 3mins.
Impossible using stock battery, this phone draws a minimum of 10% battery per hour the screen is on. Its more likely 15-20% with most peoples phone.
Your battery meter may be inaccurate, for example after flashing once my battery stayed at 100% for hours then suddenly shot down to 20%

Hi, how long do you have holding time of battery, when you are using wi-fi? (browsing)

Gingerbread EXTREMELY poor battery life!

I keep reading about this new improved battery life with Gingerbread, however I've found the opposite.
By the time I leave off work, my battery is typically at about 84%, that's with no usage all day. Today is the first time at work I've been running Gingerbread, I'm only half way through the day and my battery is already at 69%, if it keeps draining at this rate, it's going to be down to about 30-40% by the time I've left off!
Did you do a factory reset ? It helped me a lot, i'm at 4 days 6 hours with 16% battery remaining.
Also check if you aren't scanning for wifi 24/7.

Disable? with force close?
Right, I've disabled Tell HTC, signed out of Google Talk and made sure it doesn't sign in automatically. I've also signed out of Latitude.
The top four things listed on the battery usage are:
- Display = 34%
- Wi-Fi = 15%
- Android System = 13%
- Dialer = 13%
All others are pretty much under 10%.
I'd rather avoid doing a factory reset due to the amount of information and length of time it's taken me to get everything set up. However, I made the mistake of thinking that Wifi wouldn't be used if mobile network was on. My plan was that I would then connect straight away to Wifi when I was at home, and when it lost the signal it would switch to my mobile network. Well, this seems to work fine, however obviously as shown above, it's still using a fair bit of battery. I think I'll just start turned Wifi off completely until I'm going to use it.
For enabling/disabling wifi i use https://market.android.com/details?id=com.sas.inappwifitoggle . Long press search key and it gets enabled or disabled.

Cool, looks like a handy program to have!
Check out this thread about the Dialer issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1069251
My battery life hasn't improved either.
With moderate to heavy use I get about 6-7 hours only. My brightness is usually set at 30%
Display - 69%
Dialer - 8%
Cell standby and others - 4% and less
Is this normal?
Could you give us some more information here ? I mean what type of system are you using, Stock, or some type of ROM ?
I'm running LeeDroid's latest ROM, 2.3.3 and have Green Power installed so data gets turned off when my screen is off.
Auto-sync is turned off too.
In regards to mail, twitter syncing I set mine to every 6 - 12 hours.
I have had gingerbread RUU for 1 week now. With Froyo I used to get 15-30 hours depnding on wether I used 3g or Wifi(Wifi more conservative of battery). Since GB update my maximum battery lasts for 12 hours. I have noticed severe battery drain uder WiFi. Previously with 2.2 with the phoned switched off at night with Wifi enabled, the battery would drain approx 7% in 7 hours. Well today I did the same test switched off phone, left wifi enabled and the battery dropped from 90% to 46% in 7 hours which equates to 7% an hour with the screen off!
This is unacceptable! I sent HTC an email to expalin this but all I got was list of ways to reduce battery life such as swich off wifi, move to 2g, switth off live wallpaper etc etc. But all of this is absolutely of no use if the battery is draining at 7% an hour with the screen off. As I mentioned before with 2.2 the wifi drainage was small approx 1% with screen off.
Can someone suggest a solution?
1)Should I contact HTC again?
2)Try a custom ROM?
I havent tried a custom rom yet as the phone has been runnning well minus poor battery but I may have to if a solution cannot be found.

I noticed the same drain as well when I updated, but after a few days of testing I found that the problem was with one of my apps widgets. My guess is that the app is not efficient on gingerbread.
After removing the widget, everything was fine again.
To sum it up, check your apps.

when you say check your apps what are you using to find out whats running what.
Also how do i know what i can stop without making other things crash on me
for example. i do not use my sense account so can I shut dwn all things to do with sense that are running without risk?
I had the issue with battery life too. Just get the wifi switch on your homepage and turn off if you're not using it. Otherwise it constantly scans and leaches your battery.

Battery Obsession

What is wrong with almost everyone's obsession regarding battery life??
Oh my gosh I'm so tired of hearing everyone saying: I have switched everything off now and still only get 2 days of use.. Why??
If you want a weeks worth of battery life get 1" non-touch black & white screen phone.
If you want a awesome phone get a Galaxy Note, switch everything on, sync your social networks and mail every 10 minutes. Browse the web on the awesome 5.3" screen, play games and enjoy the phone to the full. So what if you need to charge it every 12hours.

2 days 10 hours with light usage (1 hour screen on time, automatic brightness, few 5 minute calls, about 20 notes, apps updating and some browsing over wifi) and still have 70% left.
It depends on the user. It surely has the juice to cope with heavy use. I couldn't be more happy

No cheats here, just light usage
bassarnis, be a pal and tell us how the hell you managed that. even with light usage i'd be lucky to get 15+ hrs.

Roger that, entering good guy Greg mode.
First of all, the fist charges are important. Once i bought it, i updated it to latest 2.3.6 OTA and started using it till it shut itself off. Then charged it to full while off. Repeated this circle 5-6 times, maybe more. I haven't rooted the device yet. Its 100% stock running KK5. (Europe)
As i am in places where there is wifi available, i switched data off. In wireless and network options, i use "GSM only" mode. I left auto synch, auto brightness and gps on.
Widgets. I use the stock weather, stock digital clock, battery solo widget, stock task killer, stock news and weather, stock calendar. All those spread across 6 homescreens with 39 other app shortcuts on a black/silver background.
About the light usage. 5-6 times a day, i switch wifi on for synching. I read my mail and check my Facebook messages. Once i am done doing whatever i wanted to do that requires internet (update any app that requires updating etc.), i switch wifi off.
Lastly, before going to sleep, i close all active apps using the stock task killing widget and clear the ram. Overnight, i lose 2% battery.
Now that's what I call a battery obsession!
I just use my device as I see fit, and top up charge when I can - I have a Micro USB cable on my keyring, which means I've always got a charging cable on me.
Regards,
Dave

I see things like this and I cringe... It's a smartphone. It shouldn't need all this garbage done to it to get good battery life. It shouldn't need toggling, everything should be on, push notifications should be used, and it should still get good battery life

YEAH! i should be able to have wifi always on without it using any battery. thats right. screw the laws of thermodynamics, it should run for weeks even! having to toggle a button is just way too much work for me!

I partly agree with you. But we lack the battery technology to do all that. Not having enough signal coverage alone is enough to drain your battery. In some ways, you adjust yourself so as to keep using the phone for longer periods of time.
I must disagree with the fact that all the above i mentioned are garbage though. I am happy that i figured out a combination that will save me huge amounts of battery. I can still do all the heavy use i need, when i need it. With smart-phones there are options in settings to let you do just that. No-one forces you to do all that, just as no-one forces me to leave everything on.
Having lost 30% battery in 2+ days, means that theoretically if i kept using it like that i would get 7 days of one charge. For example, i know when i will receive an email, from who and when he/she expects me to reply. I hardly get any emails that require immediate response. If someone expects me to reply instantly, they send an sms, or call. Both of the options work fine using gsm only mode.
I also don't find important being logged in facebook 24/7. I 'll log when i have a break, before sleeping and when i wake up. Need to check the weather before leaving for work? Tap on wifi, wait 2 secs for it to connect, click refresh on the widget, done. It doesn't take more than 10 seconds.
I don't rush to turn off wifi or anything. I just use the battery juice and the phone's cpu on demand. The note is indeed a smart-phone, but with all it's features it is reaching laptop territory. I find that treating it as a laptop works better for my needs. Then again, thats just me. If your lifestyle demands all of the note's features on 24/7, then by all means leave them on. There are external 18000 mAh battery packs you can grab.
I'm running Cassies's Lite ROM and I can get between 5 hours and one week on a single charge. Just do everybody a favor and understand that this thing can go into sleep state for days.
If I leave it alone, nothing playing or syncing on the background I lose about 1-2% in 8 hours, so this could go on for days, even a week if you don't touch it.
Of course if the screen is on for only 15 minutes on 2 days, you're not going to have much power used.
During calls screen is off, yesterday I did a 1 hour call and lost less than 10% battery. So you can make several calls on 2 days and lose litlle charge.
If you play a 3D game with screen on at full brightnees, you'll deplete the battery in 5 hours.
It's no difficult to understand. battery life depends on what you do with the thing. Whenever the screen is on, it will consume power. How much depends on the brightness level and the color of the pixels displayed.
Syncing facebook / twitter / e-mail through 3G takes a lot of power too, specially when you're on a low signal area.
Anybody noticed the difference charging the phone while off versus charging it while on.
It looks to me charging while off makes the phone battery last much longer
it also takes much longer time to charge

Yes thats a fact, it also happens with my girlfriend's galaxy s2.. With my note the other day, found out that even plugged by usb to the pc with intensive using, wasn't enough to charge the battery % and actually it was decreasing..

My old iPhone 4 did that . I was downloading an app while having it plugged in into the wall outlet, and the battery just started going down (600+ meg download).
The note is a sloooowww charging device, that's for sure.
i always get over 2 days life out of mine. i never use wifi and i have gps on all the time. But what i do is i have the screen to auto and i use the stock task manager widget. With applications i always use the back button instead of home which 90% of the time closes the app. As a browser i use opera mobile as this has an exit button too. keeping running apps to a minimum seems to help my battery las well.
I'm getting amazing battery life.
And still going strong 11hrs with somewhat light usage and it's nowhere near 50% battery yet hehehe

i can get around 5 hours display time, wich is faaaaar better than sgs2. During the night the power consumption is 1% per 5 hours with wireless off or 1%/hour with wireless on. I'm on Rocket rom v12 which rocks!

I'm getting 3.5 days on a charge with moderate use.
I have 4 email accounts that are polled every 60 minutes.
I make a few calls a day and use the browser a little.
What seems to help is doing a force stop on apps that I'm not using like AP Mobile and Yahoo Finance.
Also, I am runnning KL7.
With light usage, few sync's a few calls ((4-5 min) some texts and notes and few minutes of gaming.. I get a around with 16+ hours of usage easily. I'm happy with the battery and the Note can definitely get on with a more aggressive battery usage...
