The dock is the only thing out there that reliably converts the signal
Edit: at least in my experience

Is it possible to connect acer iconia via micro hdmi to pc monitor dvi. I tried with dvi converter but no signal, connecting to hdmi works fine.
I have a DVI connection on my tv and I can connect some things that are hdmi with the hdmi to dvi adapter and some things will not work.
So maybe and maybe not.
does not work for me
Using a pretty decent Sony LCD TV with both dvi and hmdi inputs - hooking my a500 up via DVI adapter results in no signal, where as plugging into the HDMI port works great.
I am far from an expert at this, but I *think* if you want to use DVI you need some form of hardware converter box to result in a useable signal. I am sure I will be corrected if i am wrong

Check here.
I would bet you DVI converter doesn't match the TV input.
There are 4 possibilities, DVI-I & DVI-D, both available in single or dual band.
I believe HDMI has to have one of the dual band converters, for HD and to pass the HDCP info so that protected content can play.
I went through this a couple months ago with my computer and TV set-up, DVI is a total pain with HDMI because of the HDCP requirements.
Also verify that your monitor is HDCP compliant, if it's not I believe you are out of luck. It needs that connection before HDMI will transmit.
I try to connect to 22" pc monitor at work, I have no interest connecting to tv via dvi since hdmi working great. With same dvi adapter I connect my laptop hdmi out to pc monitor dvi works great but iconia hdmi out to the same dvi in no signal. Some of the pc monitors are a acer and some dell result in same no signal, I really like to duplicate what I was doing with my laptop to use large screen at work but I guess that doesn't work.

Is it possible to display video and audio to a television that does not have an HDMI output? Please help, I been looking for cables to buy online however, I do not want to order the wrong cable and be out of luck. I am looking to stream videos from the tablet to a television through the use of an AV cable
Micro HDMI type d I believe to AV cables would most likely work if such a cable exists

yeah i think i might be out of luck !
Do an amazon search for either Micro-HDMI to component/RCA for an SD TV or to VGA to a computer monitor. If you can't get a male VGA/RCA to a female HDMI or male micro HDMI then you'll need a double female HDMI adapter.

What kind of an adaptor do I need to connect my nexus 10 to my TV (it's an older TV, not flat screen, not HD. I don't care about losing the HD, just the size.)
Thanks!
Micro HDMI to HDMI, DVI, or maybe even Component (not 100% sure on that). If the TV doesn't have any of that, then you'll likely need an Analog converter to go from HDMI to VGA, Composite, or RCA.

Check your TV. If it has HDMI, you want micro-HDMI to HDMI. If it doesn't have HDMI, but does have DVI, you'll want that.
If it has neither HDMI nor DVI, you'll need a new TV Or an HDMI to analog converter.
Nexus 10 to CRT TV connection
I have a nexus 10 tablet running stock 4.4.2. I bought an hdmi to rca converter from amazon.com and a micro hdmi to hdmi cable so that I could hook up the tablet to my old sharp crt tv. When I plug in the connections I am seeing a stripe coloured screen that says 'no signal ntsc'. when i turn the switch on the converter to pal it says 'no signal pal'. Could you tell me why this is happening and if anything could be done so that I can see the content from my tablet on my tv? Do I need any software/app installed to make this work? The only ports on the tv are the composite rca ones. I know the tv is old but its its 55 inches and in perfect working condition so I really don't want to purchase another so please if there is anything you know that would help I would be more than greatful.
My setup: the microhdmi to hdmi cable plugged into the micro hdmi port on the tablet, then the rca cable connects to the back of the tv and the rca ports on the converter. Should work?? Help me please. Thanks in advance.
Guys, I have a MHL HDMI adapter connected to my AV receiver (Denon AVR 2312) but the screen on the TV just flicks and no phone display appears. If connect the MHL HDMI adapter directly to the TV - it works. Anybody has tried to connect sgs4 to AV receiver via MHL HDMI adapter? I have 9505 with android 4.3 test version

I have the same Receiver (AU version with slightly better Audyssey) and can confirm it does work. I Have MHL cable plugged into SAT/CBL input. Have a look through your amps settings, specifically the input it's connected to.
What kind of cable is it- Official Samsung or Ebay Yum Cha?

Thanks. I use theoriginal Samsung MHL-HDMI adapgter... (but not original HDMI cabel). I tried all HDMI inputs, including the front AUX one... the phone shows me - Connect the HDMI directly to TV... very strange. I tried to make the HDMI settings in AVR not to upscale, not to convert etc.. But the same result.. Today I asked Denon support - they simply did not know what is this MHL
I have this same issue. Believe it or not, the input has to be an input specified for MHL/HDMI. Yes, it works if you plug directly into the TV, but if you try to pass it through a receiver input it won't go unless the input says so. Some receivers and some blu ray players have designated HDMI inputs that also handles MHL. If you look at the label of these inputs it won't just say HDMI, it will be labeled as MHL/HDMI.
Hey guys,
I received today my MHL adpater
http://www.ebay.com/itm/171436891054?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
The signal to the TV is working fine.
My problem is when I'm connecting devices to the USB host port, there is a power over there but my phone not responding, while those devices are working with a simple OTG cable.
Some help over here?

I have been looking for the same thing, an MHL - OTG - charging dock/adapter/dongle, I have not found anything that people report as working reliably on the S5 (I am also looking for one to work with a Note 10.1 2014).
Have you tried to connect a power supply on the micrUSB port? I have a MHL adapter and it needs external power.

Yes, I did.
I even tried connecting a USB hub and I saw there is a power from the USB Host.
Please give me a link for what you're using a direct link to eBay item.

I was under the impression you can either use mhl or otg. Not both at the same time. You tried just using the thumb drive by itself without the hdmi plugged in?
anyone had luck finding an adapter allowing you to use hdmi alongside otg?
anyone found an adapter than can do hdmi and usb host at the same time??? there seem to have plenty for s4 but nothing for s5?? although s5 is using a newer and more capable mhl if i am not wrong

it works well at same time as otg and hdmi
i am just not satisfied with the quality of the hdmi output.

i meant the image quality,to just watch and control your device its ok,to watch a 720p movie its not ok,video will be blur sometimes and it will be a little delay at sound.
few days ago i used a friends standalone hdmi adapter was performing amazing even at 1080p.
it is very nice thank you very much

I got that hdmi connection kit and it works great with my S3 doing hdmi 1080p and otg simultaneous + charging. But with my S5 it will only do hdmi 720p or otg not both. Image quality is poor on the monitor but great on the HD TV.
Maybe "Display Link" is the way to go to get wired screen mirroring and otg at the same time on the S5?
