New To Smartphones & Galaxy Note - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Hello Everyone
I'm a total novice with smartphones having used an old nokia flip phone for the past 8 years. Anyway i needed a new business phone and took the plunge and got myself a Samsung Galaxy Note ... lol ... After the initial shock, i love it ....
As stated i'm a noobie to smart phones but fairly handy at Tech being a linux only user ...
So i am wanting to root this phone and then get rid of all the bloatware rubbish. I tried to root this thing last night, but kept getting an error about incompatible file.
Looking at my current system this is whats installed:
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband: N7000XXLA4
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XXLA6
Any guidance would be very helpful and once i get used to a smartphone & android haha i'll be rocking ....
Many Thanks

As a Linux user, you're going to feel right at home on rooted Android!
You'll also feel at home reading lots of guides on how to do stuff and fix things, amirite?
I got my root with this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
That should work with all Notes, no matter which version firmware you're running. It's basically the "nuke from orbit" of rooting.
Btw, be sure to get Botbrew when you're rooted for more Linux CLI goodness.

Let me know how you get on ... Official ICS still not in the UK
Cheers

After going through many threads I found that German ICS rom have some issues like battery. I decided to wait for official OTA. Not gained enough knowledge or courage to flash

new to vibrant switched from evo

hi i just bought myself a brand new vibrant and switched back to tmobile from spriny n got rid of my evo i loved my evo but sprintys customer service sucked and i had problems with the evo .i have had lots of android phones and i am loving the vibrant so far i just want to sday hello and ask a few questions . what is the best method of rooting i have noticed there a few methods for the vibrant . i wna have full root with nand unlock so i CAN FLASH CUSTOM ROMS N KERNELS . another question is what is the best rom in ur opionion as far as speed and stability ? is there a cyanmod 6 for the vibrant ? or a froyo rom with all features working ? thanks in advance i appreciate it
I used the earliest root available (the one involving the update.zip) and that was incredibly easy. To answer your other questions, there aren't many ROMs out now. You can use Vibrant4 Eclair which I've heard works really well, but I'm still using stock. Cyan is in development and should be out soon. If you are desperate for Froyo you could try one of the builds originally for the European Galaxy X, but not everything works on that build.

Help needed

Hi there guys/girls,
I have just joined the SGS2 crew after moving from my Atrix and need help rooting my phone.
My phone is a UK 3 Samsung Galaxy S2 (it has the annoying 3 bootlogo and 3 apps in the phone).
Having had a look on the forums i'm confused in regards to what steps to take.
Can anyone tell me what is the easiest way to root?
Do I have to follow specific steps as my phone is a network branded handset?
About my phone:
Android Version - 2.3.3
Baseband - I9100NEKD5
Kernel Version -
2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE1-CL181974
[email protected]#2
Build number - GINGERBREAD.XWKE1
The first person that can give me a noobs guide which results in my phone being successfuly rooted will get a drink from me.
Thanks in advance,
Ron

Hi there,
Thanks for the reply but i'm confused in regards to which files I need to use specifically for my phone.
Also how can I flash the default unlocked SGS2 rom (the one without the crappy network branding)?
Please explain in noobs terms as I am not familiar with odin whatsoever.
Thanks again
Ron
I have FINALLY managed to flash the stock samsung unlocked rom and root my phone!
WOW what a long ass procedure.... I had become to used to using tools like gingerbreak which had made me rusty in terms of modding but got there in the end.
You thought it was a long procedure? Took me like 30 seconds after installing Odin. Glad you finally got it rooted though.

It's one of those things that becomes routine once you've done it a few times. I even remember following a guide to flash a ROM via a custom recovery and thinking this it pretty complicated, now it all seems so simple

New OTA Xoom Update, but my xoom is rooted, what to do?

I keep getting prompted to download the new OTA update but I have a rooted custom rom (tiamat 1.4.4) can i download it anywya?
I have the same problem. I think I have to follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079504 guide but i'm too lazy/scared to try right now. I might just wait for 4.0 and then see.

Question - If you are rooted this is a no brainer. YOU JUST SAY NO... what ever they are offering you has probably been in the forum as a rom for quite some time. If they are offering you an update it probably means you are running an older rooted rom. Just update to the new rooted one in the development section.

You could download it but I wouldn't recommend it. Best case scenario is you would just loose root. worse case is it won't boot (soft bricked) after install because it's not upgrading a "stock" phone. Pretty sure you will just loose root as tiamat 1.4.4 is not really a true full rom it's just a kernel.
Anyways I recommend you follow the instructions at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074979to put on the "right" clockworkmod recovery. and then put on The HammerHead Rom (which is based on 3.2) at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203635 the Hammerhead rom runs perfect for me (and most everyone else). Then put on the 3.2 Overclocked Kernel at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200063
I was basically in your situation and I got all that done and all my 100+ apps reinstalled (using Titanium Pro) and basically everything set back up in about 2.5 hours.
Honestly how much research is done prior to rooting or do some of you just root for the hell of it. This is why there are so many I may of bricked my device threads......

I feel ya playaa... I used to be one of those folks. I did minimal research and just wanted to root to hack a videogame... Then i realized all the wonderful benefits of rooting and roms and spend hours reading new topics on development... But i still have friends that all ask me silly questions all day and one even ugraded ota on their g2 and lost root.. Now they have ginger 2.3.2 i thi k and that cannot be rooted last i checked. I do wonder why people do the minimal searching... I took the time to learn this stuff so why can they... It does get frustrating
Sorry. Not trying toput the OP down.. I mean we all start somewhere, but google and search feature are huge helps =)

can someone answer a few questions about this phone??

hey.. i been rooting and flashing for 3 years strong.. im with sprint so i had the og evo.. the evo 3d.. the evo 3g lte.. galaxy s4.. galaxy s4.. now have the htc one.. and im always rooting peoples phone around me.. since i been been rooting phones i never rooted a motorola phone.. i here they can be a pain in the a$$!!? i have a friend that has this phone and i want to root it for him.. is this phone worth rooting or is it super hard... i looked and dont seem to have much for roms.. can somwone link me to the info on how i would go about unlocking and rooting this badboy.. also what rom is the most stable i could flash for him? or should i not root this phone and just wait till he get something new.. sorry for all the questions.. thanks!
To root it depends on which ota you are running. The latest one (I can't remember which) is not root friendly and is a pain to install custom ROMs on. I recommend liquid smooth 2.9. I've been using it for a week and its the best 4.2 ROM currently. You can also try 4.3 but I don't think its too stable yet. Double check which version you are currently running on the phone so more knowledgeable people can help you.

Ummmm OK... well I was just wanting to know to determine if the device in question was unlockable and which root method to direct him to... I'm unsure there is a way to see when the device was actually made short of taking it apart and looking at the sticker/stamp on the logic board...

This is the information we need to know to determine if he can unlock, or not.
