Hi there guys/girls,
I have just joined the SGS2 crew after moving from my Atrix and need help rooting my phone.
My phone is a UK 3 Samsung Galaxy S2 (it has the annoying 3 bootlogo and 3 apps in the phone).
Having had a look on the forums i'm confused in regards to what steps to take.
Can anyone tell me what is the easiest way to root?
Do I have to follow specific steps as my phone is a network branded handset?
About my phone:
Android Version - 2.3.3
Baseband - I9100NEKD5
Kernel Version -
2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE1-CL181974
[email protected]#2
Build number - GINGERBREAD.XWKE1
The first person that can give me a noobs guide which results in my phone being successfuly rooted will get a drink from me.
Thanks in advance,
Ron

Hi there,
Thanks for the reply but i'm confused in regards to which files I need to use specifically for my phone.
Also how can I flash the default unlocked SGS2 rom (the one without the crappy network branding)?
Please explain in noobs terms as I am not familiar with odin whatsoever.
Thanks again
Ron
I have FINALLY managed to flash the stock samsung unlocked rom and root my phone!
WOW what a long ass procedure.... I had become to used to using tools like gingerbreak which had made me rusty in terms of modding but got there in the end.
You thought it was a long procedure? Took me like 30 seconds after installing Odin. Glad you finally got it rooted though.

It's one of those things that becomes routine once you've done it a few times. I even remember following a guide to flash a ROM via a custom recovery and thinking this it pretty complicated, now it all seems so simple

Use my guide but with an appropriate firmware from samfirmware.
Not a hell lot you can do about the download speed. I suspect it might have something to do with hotfile - I get incredibly ****ty speed from hotfile, but not from any other file sharing service.
There should be a few threads lying around in the general section about stock roms. Try downloading from there instead of ****ty hotfile.

Before you flash anything you gotta make sure you have 2 backup plans. One is, of course, the nandroid backup. The other is having a stock firmware file you can flash with Odin in case everything goes to hell.
In my case, I have a JPU stock firmware stored on my home computer and on my work laptop. Every time I screw up so badly everything is FUBAR I go back to JPU and works like a charm.
Ah also, along with the JPU I have a CF-Root flashable file for JPU (just needs to be Froyo specific, not firmware release specific) so I can have root.
That's the only advice that hasn't been given to you already.
In reality, the Galaxy S is pretty hard to really brick. The bootloader may get corrupted but there's almost always a way out.
ok thanks guys +1
i will flash my phone with 2.3 and when I'am bored with it i'll flash it with some custom rom

ok hi im a newbe i have a htc g2 about a year old just wanted to ask what is root and why would you want to do it can it help with things like making the back speaker loulder if it can i need to do it i love this phone but the speaker sucks thanks in advance
Its like a jailbreak. To get full control of the phone. With rooting, you can try different roms, mods, overclocking, better proformance ~ reception ~ battery life, ect.

You can boost the volume of the back speaker with volume+ app (requires root), increase overall phone speed by flashing Cyanogen roms (CM7), and save battery life or speed up the phone dramatically by overclocking. Much more too that you will learn and find more useful after rooting your phone. Its worth it... trust me
ONE THING THOUGH... VERY IMPORTANT!
Do your research first. Don't just fly into it blindly. Know your risks and requirements and then follow the directions EXACTLY. It seems scary in a way but if you read carefully and follow it... you'll do fine! Good luck and hope to see you in the CM7 threads soon

Its a pain in the asre, but the best thing to do is spend as long as you can reading about the following:
ADB
Root benefits
Clockworkmod recovery
Rom manager
Bootloader/hboot
Of 5 phones I've rooted, this was the most complicated so read as much as possible.
Root itself is administrator rights to the whole file system. It is a linux term (android is based on linux). You can do a lot of damage but also, with a little knowledge, can have great control over the look and performance.
Ps. Flashing custom roms is addictive

And there isn't a "one click" method for our device, but the wiki is very thorough, and if you research a bit and follow the guide step by step, you should be happily rooted in no time.
I was in ur shoes a couple of weeks back, and I must tell you, rooting the phone is like breathing a new life into it. U will have endless possibilites to customize.
Anyways my two cents to the issue is to tell you that in other for you to root ur phone after the gingerbread update u will need to downgrade it back to froyo first, then u can then have ur pick of several rooted custom roms based on gingerbread.

Once you're on Froyo, this method (link below) is my suggestion. I used it a couple months back and it worked great... zero problems and it took all of 15 minutes. It uses gfree which is the preferred method according to the wiki... speaking of, the wiki offers a wealth of information. Bombadier linked it previously.

Thanks for leting him know, Ditamae. I couldn't tell him the new method since I rooted a year ago on Froyo... besides, it is quite confusing when a device is a year old, has had a ton of updates, and two different models of the device. I've actually bricked a device for those reasons before and its never fun. Especially when its your wifes phone lol! Even us who have been in the IT field for 10 years make mistakes

For sure. The method I linked is actually a bit older and the OP doesn't appear to support it anymore (he didn't support it back when I rooted, but I read the entire thread). It worked perfectly for me and I've seen posts from users who downgraded from 2.3 and then had it success with it. I was even able to refer back to, a couple months after rooting, and flash the engineering hboot with no problems whatsoever. Too bad the guy isn't around to take credit for his guide.
Are you gonna try out the new stable CM? I kinda want to, but how can it be better than the nightlies? Stability? I feel like the nightlies are stable.
the latest stable is just build #225 so I just flash the nightly and keeping going with those. but yeah, nightlies for the past few months have been nothing but flawless

The easiest way to root on froyo is by using z4 root or universal androot
You can also use the tool for the pc called superone click roo

It might be the easiest, but I've heard of many users who've experienced problems using that method. I'm not knocking it, I'm just saying the wiki is probably the safest bet.
My friend asked me to root his samsung galaxy for him. He doesn't have a sim card in it and it is running 2.2 froyo. I have tons on experience rooting and ROMing my Droid x2 from Verizon and my Acer tablet but I don't know where to begin on this phone. I read the sticky and I've been researching for the past week and have still yet to even get the correct drivers. My friend needs it tommorow, and he already gave me some money to do it for him. If any one, any one at all could link me to the drivers for the phone, and how to root it (prefferebly not through adb) or if you can do it without hooking it up to the computer, I would be eternally greatful! All I need to do is get the phone rooted and get a recovery on there. Somebody please help! Thanks guys!!!

Get an Gingerbread Stock version of Gingerbread (see www.sammobile.com) I recommend I9000_JVZ and download-it. then flash-it. You cand find step-by step how on this forum.
After you flash it you can flash wwith odin the proper version fot CF-Root from chain fire (it should be with the same extension _JVZ or _JVT, because it is working just fine).
If you do not fing them send me your mail and I wil upload them for you. All of them.

So i am wanting to root this phone and then get rid of all the bloatware rubbish. I tried to root this thing last night, but kept getting an error about incompatible file.
Looking at my current system this is whats installed:
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband: N7000XXLA4

Any guidance would be very helpful and once i get used to a smartphone & android haha i'll be rocking ....
Many Thanks
As a Linux user, you're going to feel right at home on rooted Android!
You'll also feel at home reading lots of guides on how to do stuff and fix things, amirite?
I got my root with this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
That should work with all Notes, no matter which version firmware you're running. It's basically the "nuke from orbit" of rooting.
Btw, be sure to get Botbrew when you're rooted for more Linux CLI goodness.
