I really don't get this at all.... They seem to be on crack. As someone who has taken flying lessons the pilots radios are on a totally different spectrum than any wifi bluetooth 3g 4g network. plus the fact that all android devices have air plane mode..... don't get me wrong i'm all for safety but this seems down right stupid.

I'm not sure if it has to do with take off and landing, and I'm sure there is a reason, but the last time I flew, we had in flight wifi and I was using both qik and voxer.

Question is though if it's that serious because there are possibilities the plane can go down, than how the hell does the plane lift off when there cell phone radio towers emitting radio frequencies. Seriously though they should just give some sort of explanation for what I also feel is stupid.

Lol well I suppose I'll drop a little truth in here...
My stepmother used to be a flight attendant. The REAL reason why they ask you to turn off electronic devices is so that all the passengers are not distracted during take off or landing should something happen that would require the flight crews attention.
It actually makes a lot of sense. If no one is talking on the phone or listening to music, then a passenger could spot something, like smoke coming out of a turbine or such.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
While squshy has it partially right, there are real electronics issues as well. I work with aircraft certified electronics and have talked with the engineers that do the actual certification. The FAA would like you to believe your device could bring down the aircraft if you don't turn it off, and while it's theoretically possible, it's totally improbable.
The real reason is your device could have a design that unintentionally spews EMI, which could interfere with communications or radar and lead to a collision if airtraffic control cannot communicate with the pilots. Radios by their very nature cannot be shielded from interference like the local avionics can.
Certified for flight devices have to go through thousands of hours of very expensive tests for every version of hardware to ensure they do not emit any EMI in the range that would affect avionics or communications. There is simply no way to know if your device will emit harmful EMI even in airplane mode. I know it sucks, but just turn it off or end up like Alec Baldwin.

Dwyw42 pretty much said it all. I fly every week to get to work and back and it is a hassle to obey the 10,000 laws. They even stress that "airplane mode" is not acceptable.... shut it down!!
How much compliance is there with that? What a joke! Think of all the kindle's, laptops, ipads etc that are is standby/screen off mode. How about watches? Electronic Razors? Electronic Toothbrushes? What is the interference caused when operating a Norelco model 2459S and a Samsung S3 in Direct Conect mode? No one knows and the permutations and combinations of so many different devices is why it's just easier to shut them down. It would be impossible to test/approve each device.
That said. When I get to work, and while working I frequently have a kindle, laptop, nook and phone that are not fully powered off.... and I'm a pilot! And to make you feel comfortable, I will also say that I try to not text and drive!

Anything dealing with in-flight rules seems absurd. Why do you have to put your seat back all the way forward??? Don't tell me that, after falling 30,000 feet, the 1/4 of an inch recline is going to block the person behind me from escaping...

Its so stupid why should we abide by some law that another human made unless its proven that it affects the plane in anyway its not worth it. Just like weed, it was here it was grown from day 1 on earth so why is it that they make it illegal because it affects you and they think it affects you in a bad way, and to them its a drug which is not true drugs have chemicals,etcc... **** done to things in order to get that drug. Weed is a plant and it grows from mother earth.
This could go on and on but its not worth it.

Interesting, so much attitude about "stupid laws" crying why can't I use my electronic devices, well, as a serious radio enthusiast (CB, ham radio, scanning, anything to do with radio) I know a hell of a lot about radio and what electronics can do to disrupt radio receivers. Think about this before saying anything more about how stupid the law is about using electronic equipment on an airplane, a lot of the radio equipment on a flight, especialy long haul international flights rely heavily on HF RADIO, as a hammy, I can tell you that HF RADIO is the worst radio system to pick up radio interference from electronic devices. This interference is caused by spurious harmonics, NOT ALL electronic equipment is clean, it ALL emits some kind of signal and HF RADIO will pick it up, so think of this, an aircraft is being called by ground control half way across the Atlantic, and you got that crappy Chinese made hand held device putting out 60db of spurious harmonics across the entire HF BAND the pilot of the plane your on can't here that another plane is headed right for yours. Well you get the idea.

No getting around it. High schools where I live are blocked inside and outside to a certain spot. The court house blocks internet in court room area you can only make phone calls but the rest of building is edge network. Walk out building 5 feet full 3g service. Something with homeland security.

OP..
I don't know where you're from. But, if you're in the US, signal blocking is highly illeagal. However, you should not waste the teacher's time playing with your phone...
thats disappointing to hear...
You get around it by calling the FCC. Unless he has a license to broadcast on those frequencies, he'll be in for a nasty surprise. If you have evidence that he's using them, contact your local FCC office and tell them what he's up to.
Alternatively, fake a heart attack and wait for someone to try and call 911. When the school hears how you died because someone couldn't call 911, the principle better be prepared for jail time.

But seriously, in USA and Canada, signal blocking is completely illegal, whatever the use is. Complain to the local authorities and get it taken off.
School is important though, listen to the important classes and stuff...I do text in random French and programming classes though
it wont be hard to get evidence, because of the fact that he had an assembly and was bragging about it to the whole school... ugh, ignorant people...
I dont know how big/small your school is, but to cover an average size school you would need one powerful jammer or multiple jammers to canvas the school in that evil death signal.
Look for an antenna/s and snap a picture of the device if you can.
But it is 100% illegal, I remember for a time movie theaters wanted to install these but of course that never happened. if you are 100% sure you can call the FCC

it is coming brother... the Feds are mandating that ALL states pass some sort of hand held device law or risk losing federal funding for road repairs/upkeep. I gotta say anyone that argues this is a damn idiot. I commute 80 miles to work and have been damn near run off the road about once a week because some jack ass is talking on the phone or texting. I also am a motorcycle rider. If you drift into my lane, you are getting steel ballbearings into you windshield!
Yeah, I'm not sure how they would enforce this either. More and more cars nowadays have integrated bluetooth audio, or one can add aftermarket devices to do this. I guess they can catch people texting while driving (which I agree, is a crazy thing to do anyways).
I think texting is the worst. I'm a teenager and I have tried to text and drive but I don't do it anymore because of how difficult it is.
But other teens gladly take that risk

I, as well as many others I'm sure, have placed a phone in what we thought was a safe spot, and still had it fall, or someone else accidentally knocks it down. I have a 3 year old. People aren't nit picking, some people have legitimate claims. It's a phone and believe it or not, accidents do happen.
This is where we've reached, fan boys actually blaming the consumer now for accidentally dropping their phone's, instead of blaming the real culprit.

our little girl plays learning games on both mine and the lady's phone, along with grandma's tablet. All three of the devices have more than stood up to the task. She's only dropped the tablet once, neither phone yet. Also, not everything is out of reach to the little one. Sometimes I'll set it on the wide arm of the couch to charge while I sit there. If I get up, I'm not going to Unplug it just to get a drink in the next room. At $300+ and listed as a " solid, sturdy, durable etc" product, you expect it to withstand a drop or two. My Droid X has been knocked off counters and such by friends( where it SHOULD be safe), dropped by myself, I've gotten hung up in the charger cord once despite my best effort to keep it out of the way, pulling my phone with it. Hit bumps in a vehicle dumping it from the car holder, as it clicked into place, but didn't actually secure. I've had coolant and other automotive fluids spilled on me, or splash onto my phone etc. I was using the LED light to find small puddles in the basement once, dropped it into the water after tripping over something I didn't see, its worked its way out of my deep side pocket while I ran once, fell onto my foot and got kicked across the ground. I don't keep it there anymore but the pocket was 3" deeper than the phone, should have been secure. Point is, you can't predict everything around you, or control it. Accidents happen regardless unless you move like a turtle, even then it may still happen. So can we lose the stupid and stay on topic please?

Well why would someone want to post about their misfortune?? It all boils down to....take better care of your phone then I wouldn't get broken would it? What has other peoples broken devices got to do with you?? Unless you broke them!

no it doesn't, it boils down to accidents happen. I was working on gathering insurance information from different companies to post along with parts links etc. There are already several threads about broken devices. Once again proving your a bunch of ****ing idiots. This will be the last thread I post here. Pretty pathetic considering its my first, and not one God damn person could post on topic.
Best part is, you guys keep bumping the thread to the top just to say its pointless. That makes perfect sense.

Well stop making pointless threads then! With people giving advice on how not to break your device.....simple, take better care of it and stop being stupid! What does other peoples broken devices have to do with you? Unless your saying that you personally broke them? This thread is pointless and a constant reminder to those whose devices have broken, a constant reminder of their misfortune! Of their bad luck if you wish!

I'm sorry i thought this place was about helping one another. So I thought I'd try to help others and myself in one shot. Clearly this forum is just about trolling off topic and name calling with no real goal. Its all I've seen in every single thread. You guys must be proud.

Who are you helping?? How can you possibly help/teach anyone not to drop their phone?? The price of insurance to the price of a screwed up phone is pittance!

Give the guy a break. If you read the original thread I don't see it as that bad of an idea.
The US army is deploying smartphones to help troops to get a better sense of the ground condition. The phone of choice is the Motorola Atrix!

So, can I control UAVs from my phone?
Glad to see the Atrix getting love from at least someone. Kinda sad how underrated it is.
lol, i saw that article over at engadget.
yes, the atrix is a hugely underrated phone, but thats only because only a small percentage of smartphone users root or know about rooting.
Awesome! Even tho I have moved on to the note, I still have my atrix. Love that phone.

Poor choice
While I love this phone, and you'd have to pry it out of my cold, dead fingers before I switch, I think that this is a bad choice. Unless they've somehow managed to fix the instabilities with Android in general and the quirks of the Atrix in specific, I wouldn't want to depend on this phone for my life in a combat zone. Even with running stock (rooted), I still have the occasional (but frequent enough) random reboot.
Thoughts?

They may have chosen it out of convenience, since Motorola makes great hardware and the Atrix is the only model in recent history with an unlockable bootloader (Photon wont work since most of the world is GSM). I'm kinda surprised they just didnt make their own hardware though, they certainly have the funds to do it.
So we have very high tech smartphones strapped to soldiers. Next thing you know they'll all have Heartbeat Sensors from Call of Duty.
The military looks to buy off the shelf prior to developing for themselves. I think the Atrix is a pretty reliable phone.

Every single phone I've owned (iPhone 2g, 3g, 3gs, atrix 4g and note i717) have had random reboots. These are computers, reboots happen.

Maybe the military wanted a phone with a fingerprint scanner?

Indeed it played a role I'm sure. It's nice to have that security hardware in case someone drops their device.

The development was in the operating system which they needed to make secure. I am sure they are picking what they feel is the best hardware, (and the Atrix I feel is a good choice), and the operating system news is 6 months or so old which is when the announcement was made by the NSA that they had developed a secure Android OS. It's been known for a long time the military was starting to replace BB with Android phones.
I would want a more reliable phone to show where my buddys are when I'm in combat. Having a phone that over heats in 65 degree weather, and they are using it in 100+ degree with GPS on?? Digitzer problems too.
Kind of a weird choice when there is more "rugged" phones, like the Samsung Rugby.
Motorola may have used it as a marketing scheme to show how reliable the ATRIX really is. Even though it is not, still a great phone though

Motorola is a nice American sounding company. They have been around for a while. They made the first car radio I think. This may have something to do with decision. Taking a off the shelf phone is good budget wise. Hopefully it helps our troops deployed throughout the globe

Motorola has worked with the military before and manufactures many military grade electronics.

Then why are they using the Atrix of all phones?

1. Unlocked Bootloader - They can run whatever software they want, and they do.
2. American company - No worries about espionage e.g. (Huawei)
3. Good specs - Atrix might not be the newest phone, but it is by no means outdated.
4. Cheap - Motorola can't really sell the Atrix anymore, so the US army might have gotten it cheap at bulk.
