[Q] USB access to SD card lost after Rooting - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've just installed Quarx's 120509+ CM9 on a friends brand new red lense Defy.
Everything installed perfectly, except I could not access the memory card from my PC (Win7). I can access my own Defy's SD card with the same build, no problem.
I then went back to Froyo again - USB Mass Storage worked fine.
I then Rooted Froyo - USB Mass Storage not detected by PC.
Looks like the rooting process killed access to the SD card via USB? How is that possible?
I used SuperOneClickv1.6.5-ShortFuse to root the phone (which I've used to root 4 different Defy's without an issue)
Could anyone possibly shed some light?

My own defy which was rooted in the same way is detected by the PC when USB storage is connected, so I don't think it's a driver issue.

Lost USB Access after rooting : Me too.

Even i dont agree that its a driver issue in computer as the computer drivers are not touched while the device is rooted. I think the rooting app/mechanism kills/modifies some driver program in the phone itself that makes the phone's memory invisible.
I have a moto charm MB502 and it was attempted to root by SuperOnelick, Universal Androot and Z4root apps. Super and Universal were not that successful. Z4 root worked and is still installed on phone. Any resolutions received after your last post? I want access to my phone's internal memory which needs freeing up space and its always easier to do it in mass storage mode rather than cleaning it through some file explorer app.
By the way using File Explorer app in phone i can see all the contents what so ever but can not move/shift data from SD to phone or vice versa.

The only way I can access my SD card is by using the "Share SD Card" option in the Bootmenu under the "Tools" option. Obviously this will only help you if you have this option on your MB502.

Post-root USB errors, anyone?

I finally got around to rooting mine earlier today..
Ever since, I can't get either of my computers (both Mac and PC) to recognize the phone for mounting the SD card. It charges fine via USB but is impossible to mount as USB storage. Any ideas on this?
Maybe a driver issue?
I thought that originally. But if that were the case, I wouldn't have been able to connect to them previously (no changes in drivers on the computers) or been able to connect to complete the root process. I'm kind of at a loss for ideas right now.
hmm strange... I'm a android newbie so i don't think i can help passed driver
Method?

Hey what method did you use to root? If you can mount your internal storage but not your sdcard, can your phone read your sd card when the phone is booted normally? Perhaps you damaged your slot?

exactly what i was thinking, but myz06vette are you able to view content from your sd card using just your phone? ex: music, movies or pictures?
Yes, I can view content on my SD card and internal phone storage on the phone itself using Root Explorer or ASTRO. I didn't use the method that required me to pull the SD card out. I can play music stored on the card and view all my photos, so I know its reading okay. I even took the SD card out and put it in a memory card reader and it hooked up to the computer fine.. mounted right away. Just won't mount through the phone.

The development.apk packaged in many Dream/G1 ROMs has an option to scan for media. Try that
BTW, *#*#4636#*#* also works from the dialer to pull up phone/radio options, which will allow you to switch between cdma auto (PRL) --> cdma only -->> ev-do only. The latter two options should save you battery!
Thanks for the advice! I updated to CDMA-only right when I got the phone.. so I honestly can't say whether or not its saving me battery since I don't know what it was like set to CDMA auto PRL hahaa.
I tried installing the Dev Tools apk you attached, but each time I do, it says "Application not installed" with the yellow !triangle next to it.

Sorry, man -- that .apk was from an Eclair build -- try the new one I put up -- it's from an Espresso build, I just installed in on my DI -- all good
Hah alright fair enough. This one loaded fine.
Checking it out now... will report back. Thanks!
Half of the options in the app force close.
Media scanner loaded, but isn't helping me mount the sd card to my computer.
Any more ideas?

So you've checked your settings in "Connect to PC" -- perhaps your "always ask" option is cleared and it's set to HTC Sync, for example? What do you get in the SDcard/Storage menu? Any stats for the SDcard? What happens when you elect to eject it in that menu?
Storage menu shows total space and free space like it should.
Connect to PC is currently set to Ask me everytime.. option for Disk Drive selected just to try and force it to mount..
Removed SD card.. did battery pull reset.. still nothing.

That's frustrating. You might have to back-up your sdcard data on a PC and re-format the card, then copy the data back. I'm assuming you have a card reader.
I hadn't thought until just now to try another card. I've got a few sitting around here somewhere. I'll try that before taking the time to backup almost a full 16 gigs of stuff, format, then restore it all.

Do you have some sort of app killer/task manager auto killing the obex service? Ive noticed i have problems when it isnt running, but when it is running it kills battery like mad. Try going to settings>applications>running services and see if its running next time you try to mount. It should show up under calendar. Hope this helps.
P.S. I only let this service run when i need to plug into my pc, since it seems to keep the phone from being able to "sleep" properly. So if you have something killing it, or the calendar app has been removed that may have a part in your problem.

[Q] Does mounting the sdcard as diskdrive really screws up a2sd?

I've read somewhere here in the forums that it can screw up the a2sd function
so how can i connect the phone to my PC (because using a card reader every time you need to connect your phone to a PC is @[email protected])
Is this true? any alternative?
I'm using wildpuzzle ROM btw
Hi Dudin.
As standard, when you connect the phone to the pc as a removable storage, Android prevents the SD from being seen by the phone at the same time. As A2SD installs apps to the SD, this obviously causes any Apps on the SD to not work. I dont think its a permanent screw up, as it all should right itself after you disconnect from the computer, but you do have options:
1:Connect as Sync or Charge only. (a quick but pointless workaround if you want to browse your Sd card from the pc),
2: Or do as I do and install "Dual Mount SD" from the market It makes the SD card accessible by both Android and the USB at the same time. Works perfect for me, I can still use my aps and access the SD from the PC simultaneously. (I have used it on Wildpuzzle, Openfire and Cyanogen Mod, Eclair and Froyo versions). You need to be rooted for this though as it asks for superuser permissions.
Hope this helps.
Ok I will clarify for you. If you use dt app2ext patch. When you mount your sd card, the computer mounts the fat32 partition, and does not detect the ext partition, so it does not screw your card up, or the apps.
if you are using froyo app2sd, the apps that are on your sd card will not work when the sd card is mounted.
thanks for the replies
I find a good alternative is Dropbox - and it is mentioned in a lot of threads.
I already used it for work and it is great. No looking around for a USB cable or turning off/remove case/remove card etc which takes ages! Dropbox is free so give it a go! I use it in conjunction with EZ File manager (i think thats what its called) to transfer stuff and unzip archives.
Hope it helps!

Unable to Mount SD card

Hey all,
I have downloaded the Windows 7 64 bit drivers for my Fascinate. Installed them...but when i go to mount my SD card I can see it in Windows Explorer but it says CD drive F: Verizon Mobile. I cannot see anything on my SD card at all. How can I get this mounted. I am rooted and I have USB debugging on. Any other ideas on how to get this to work.
Pull down the notification bar at the top of the phone. Press mount sd card. Your problem mabe deeper than this but I just thought best to start simple. If u still can't get it we need more info like is it DI01,DJ05, or DL09

No, I cannot mount that way. I am on dl09. Very frustrating.

I had the same issue. I flashed Adrynalyne's latest voodoo kernel 01/21 low voltage and it seemed fixed it for me. I'm running DL09 supah clean 04 also.
See here and go to Test 4 this maybe your issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=915709&highlight=cd-rom
This is the official response from Samsung:
"There is no SD card mount issue on Windows OS. After user connects USB cable, Windows OS will recognize the device as CD-Rom, and the ToolLauncher_Bootstrap.exe will be running by autorun function. (WinXP only, Win 7 user should run ToolLauncher_Bootstrap.exe by himself ). At this point either user can ignore the installation of TL and use mass storage directly, or wait 30 secs timeout and the device will be changed to mass storage.
Another option is that user can change the settings -> USB setting to 'Ask on connection' from mass storage(default). It will allow user to go to mass storage directly by selecting mass storage.
But The mass storage is not working on MAC OS from previous version, and We have a fix for that in FROYO release."
Hope this helps.
I have the same issue when using certain kernels not sure if it is in the kernel or not. the only way i am able to mount the sd or use pda net is to plug the phone into the comp and reboot the phone after the phone reboots the comp recognizes it. I know this is not a fix but it does work everytime and the phone is recognized until the next time i reboot my phone without it being plugged into comp. This is a temp fix until you can find a better fix.

Read External SD card from PC

I am trying to read my external sd card when plugged into pc (Win 7) but my pc does not see the external, only internal memory.

You can enable USB Debugging, get the proper drivers installed, and use Droid Explorer, that is what I do.

Thanks for that information - yesterday I downloaded the drivers that were supposed to help with this but I still do not see the external from the pc.
What is droid explorer that you mention?
Thanks

Droid Explorer.
From what I've read, this is a honeycomb issue I've tried everything and can't see my external sd card on my pc. I've tried multiple programs that claim to work, but haven't found any yet.
I can't install droidexplorer on my computer, if errors out because of 64bit. I made the changes in the registry that are suggested with no luck.

I know that this is probably covered in another thread but, since it was mentioned in my resolution, I am curious the benefit to rooting?
Is it worth it for an average user?
Seeing external SD card
bweave - I am repeating what I have said in the "lost files from my sd card" thread, but here goes. I use the old fashioned method of mounting my sd card in a r/w card gizmo (I use a cheapo Wal**** Targus card reader writer) I attach this to my desktop via usb and then can see the card as a mass storage unit in Win 7. I can then delete files or add music/pictures/movies and when done I put the card back in my a500 where I can then see and display the files perfectly. I do realise that this is not the most tech savvy way of doing it but it works and touch wood I have never lost or corrupted a single file. In the other forum thread several people were continually losing files from the sd card. Now if you are talking about external usb hard drives and not just the sd card then I can recommend the app "USB Mount All v1.3" from the Marketplace with this you can see and mount/unmount all external sources - cards, thumb drives and hard drives. Hope my two penneth worth might be of assistance.
Sorry bweave forgot to mention if you use USB Mount All you will need to be rooted

I'd rtaher go and buy a microsd reader for my computer then root the tablet.. $4.05 with zero risk of bricking anything.

New to the Droid X

Hi all,
I am new to the X. I am coming from the HTC Incredible. I was running CM7. I liked it a lot. My Incredible suffered some physical damage and for the price of an insurance claim I picked up an X on Criagslist.
I am experiencing some difficulties with the X however. One of these was posted in another thread. I will recap here for the purpose of consolidating my questions.
Issues:
1. <Resolved> Unable to access the bootloader screen.
2. SD card not recognized. <Possible dead SD card slot>
3. <Resolved> Confusion on drivers required to get my device to show in a command prompt with the 'ADB Devices' command.
Details:
1. When attempting to access the boot loader screen the search button does not get me in. I power the device down. Then I hold the home and power button screen until the Droid and caution icon appear. Then the device becomes unresponsive. When I press the search button nothing happens. From here I must pull the battery to reboot.
<Resolution provided by meshdub below> Thank you.
2. The SD card is not recognized by the device. I have a new SD card. I can pop it in my PC and it works fine (shows in Windows Explorer and I am able to access and format there). When the device is plugged in to my computer the drive letter shows but when clicking on the drive it says 'Please insert a disk in drive G:'. The storage settings screen displays the following:
Total space - Unavailable
Available space - Unavailable
Mount SD card - Insert an SD card for mounting <grayed out>
Format SD card - Format (erase) the SD card <grayed out>
When I go to settings > Privacy settings > Factory Data Reset and check the Erase SD card option a message pops up stating the SD card has been removed.
3. I am trying to get the drivers needed for accessing the ADB devices via command prompt. Before downloading the Motorola driver set application, my XP machine detected and installed some drivers for the device. The device does show up in the device manager as a disk drive and CD ROM drive with the name 'Motorola MB810 USB Device'. I have since downloaded the Motorola application and the USB charging driver packages. I am unsure how to get these drivers associated with the device so I can get it to list in ADB devices to try to move forward. I have tried to uninstall and rescan for hardware in the device manager but it keeps coming back with the XP drivers. When I plug the USB cable in to my X it auto detects the hardware and drivers before I can select a different one.
<Resolution> Make sure that in the Applications settings Development settings USB Debugging is enabled.
My thought is if I can root and get a new bootloader or recovery I may be able to circumvent any existing issues with the current ROM or bootloader.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
OldTymeHockey
Please help with drivers
Okay. Well, it seems there is no help for my first post. I would like to address the drivers first.
I have downloaded the Motorola driver installation 5.0.0 from Motorola's site. I have tried many many things to get the right drivers for the ADB to recognize my device. I am having no success.
It appears Windoze is using it's own generic drivers each time I plug my device in to the USB port. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Motorola driver application. I have uninstalled the MB810 from device manager many times. I can't get my computer to use any Motorola drivers.
EDIT:
I racked my brain while reading through the noob guide once again. It appears one step is missing from the driver install and getting the adb to recognize your device. You must enable USB debugging in the development menu of your device.
1. I assume you mean stock recovery, not bootloader. The keys have been changed in Moto's GB build. Once you get to the prompt (after holding home+power), try pressing both volume buttons. That should get you in. Navigate with volume, select with the power button.
2. This is weird... Do you have any other SD cards to test and see that it's not a defective SD slot on your phone?

1. Got into recovery. Thanks.
2. I have tried three SD cards. An old 1GB, the 4GB from my Incredible, and a brand new 8GB from Sam's Club. Is there any cure for a possibly defective SD card slot?

Have you formatted it on the computer? If so, make sure you do it as fat and not ntfs.
Also, the sdcard slot being broken could be why the guy sold it?
Also, is the sdcard mounted on the computer when you have it in the droid x?

I have formatted it to FAT on my computer. It still doesn't show up in the device.
It is quite possible that is why it was sold. Live and learn.
I don't think it shows on my computer. I only see the MB810 USB device in device manager under CD ROM drives and also under disk drives. Windows Explorer shows two extra drives when plugged in. One CD ROM and one removable drive. Neither show any files in Windows Explorer.

I am on 2.3.3. Kernel is 2.6.32.9. It was the OTA update provided by Verizon.
I was just trying to get a different recovery first to see if I could get at the SD card that way. I had CM7 on my Incredible. I intend to run CM again. I like it.
I have been reading on SBF but I don't think I need that at this point.
This may be of no help, but every time I plug my phone into my computer, I have to pull down the navigation bar and select the mass storage option from list even though it is already on it. It absolutely will not recognize it until I do this.

All better now
Thanks for the input guys. It turns out the SD card slot wouldn't respond to anything. Cards were not recognized by 2.2, 2.3, or even in recovery.
Well, I went to the Verizon store just to ask them to look at it (playing dumb). It turns out the insurance I had covered the phone. It fell under the extended warranty. This is not normal as I bought the phone off Craigslist and it was tagged as 'customer provided equipment' but somehow it was covered.
Now I have a fresh factory refurb to work with. I have to SBF back to Froyo though because it came with 2.3.3 loaded. That is, unless someone has come up with a solution to root Gingerbread. I'm off to do my research.
