You can enable USB Debugging, get the proper drivers installed, and use Droid Explorer, that is what I do.

Thanks for that information - yesterday I downloaded the drivers that were supposed to help with this but I still do not see the external from the pc.
What is droid explorer that you mention?
Thanks

Droid Explorer.
From what I've read, this is a honeycomb issue I've tried everything and can't see my external sd card on my pc. I've tried multiple programs that claim to work, but haven't found any yet.
I can't install droidexplorer on my computer, if errors out because of 64bit. I made the changes in the registry that are suggested with no luck.

I know that this is probably covered in another thread but, since it was mentioned in my resolution, I am curious the benefit to rooting?
Is it worth it for an average user?
Seeing external SD card
bweave - I am repeating what I have said in the "lost files from my sd card" thread, but here goes. I use the old fashioned method of mounting my sd card in a r/w card gizmo (I use a cheapo Wal**** Targus card reader writer) I attach this to my desktop via usb and then can see the card as a mass storage unit in Win 7. I can then delete files or add music/pictures/movies and when done I put the card back in my a500 where I can then see and display the files perfectly. I do realise that this is not the most tech savvy way of doing it but it works and touch wood I have never lost or corrupted a single file. In the other forum thread several people were continually losing files from the sd card. Now if you are talking about external usb hard drives and not just the sd card then I can recommend the app "USB Mount All v1.3" from the Marketplace with this you can see and mount/unmount all external sources - cards, thumb drives and hard drives. Hope my two penneth worth might be of assistance.
Sorry bweave forgot to mention if you use USB Mount All you will need to be rooted

I'd rtaher go and buy a microsd reader for my computer then root the tablet.. $4.05 with zero risk of bricking anything.

I've read somewhere here in the forums that it can screw up the a2sd function
so how can i connect the phone to my PC (because using a card reader every time you need to connect your phone to a PC is @[email protected])
Is this true? any alternative?
I'm using wildpuzzle ROM btw
Hi Dudin.
As standard, when you connect the phone to the pc as a removable storage, Android prevents the SD from being seen by the phone at the same time. As A2SD installs apps to the SD, this obviously causes any Apps on the SD to not work. I dont think its a permanent screw up, as it all should right itself after you disconnect from the computer, but you do have options:
1:Connect as Sync or Charge only. (a quick but pointless workaround if you want to browse your Sd card from the pc),
2: Or do as I do and install "Dual Mount SD" from the market It makes the SD card accessible by both Android and the USB at the same time. Works perfect for me, I can still use my aps and access the SD from the PC simultaneously. (I have used it on Wildpuzzle, Openfire and Cyanogen Mod, Eclair and Froyo versions). You need to be rooted for this though as it asks for superuser permissions.
Hope this helps.
Ok I will clarify for you. If you use dt app2ext patch. When you mount your sd card, the computer mounts the fat32 partition, and does not detect the ext partition, so it does not screw your card up, or the apps.
if you are using froyo app2sd, the apps that are on your sd card will not work when the sd card is mounted.
thanks for the replies
I find a good alternative is Dropbox - and it is mentioned in a lot of threads.
I already used it for work and it is great. No looking around for a USB cable or turning off/remove case/remove card etc which takes ages! Dropbox is free so give it a go! I use it in conjunction with EZ File manager (i think thats what its called) to transfer stuff and unzip archives.
Hope it helps!
I had it at one time but because I'm an Android newbie, I have no idea where to look.
Using Astro or ES.

It's ok, we all start somewhere right?
Load up astro hit home then up and your usb storage device is whatever is in usb_storage. Remember to give it a few secs to detect it and prepare the drive.
Your SD card (internal) is sdcard and your microsd is external_sd.
GL.
Hope this helps.

Excellent! Thanks.
Is it possible to access the micro SD card through a computer? When exploring the acer drive after plugging it in you can see all the stuff on the internal memory but can't get to the external_sdcard folder.
at the moment i dont think this is possible but give it a few days and it might be a possibility.

You can purchase (I think it was a whole $1.50) an app called WiFi File Explorer. It sets your tablet with its own IP address from whatever source you are using for WiFi. Then you access your SD Card by entering in the IP address line in your browser. The app will give you the exact address line to enter into your browser.
Its like a virtual FTS server actually. Works like a charm. If you are worried about security, you can require a password.
Accessing external sd and usb drives
It is possible to access the SD and USB drives using a file manager such as Astro or Estrongs. The drives can be found in the main directory under subdirectory /mnt.
Hope this helps. I had the same problem at first.

According to Acer, that isn't possible right now. Not that I'm inclined to believe them, but the manual is pretty thorough and I decided to go through every page and it clearly states "Transferring files from a microSD card to your PC.
Remove the card from the tablet and use a card reader or USB adapter to access the card as an external storage device."
I'm REALLY hoping they address this in an update. I thought it was a Honeycomb limitation due to the Xoom but Asus has addressed it by looping it as a folder in the internal storage so I mean, Acer and Xoom should be able to do that as well. Unless there are unforeseen problems with doing that? /shrug.
USB and a camera
Thanks for starting this thread! I'm also a newb and I have Astro and ES installed (now).
I am trying to read images from my camera (Nikon D3). When I attach the USB and turn on the camera the A500 says scanning for media. But none shows up in the photo browser (I'm sure I need a better viewer and suggestions are welcome!). When using ES or Astro and navigating to the usb_storage directory it shows as empty.
For background, the D3 holds 2 CF cards with the 2nd typically used as overflow and both are 8GB. Each card normally just has a DCIM directory with photos in one or more directories below that.
Once I connected up the A500, on one of the cards 2 additional directories were created (the one without any images currently) called .android_secure and LOST.DIR. I can't see any of these directories on the A500 or any of the images (all .jpg). I plugged into my laptop for this info.
I am trying not to have to carry my laptop anymore so any suggestions, ideas or research resources would be appreciated.
I've run into a HUGE issue. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this.
The files on my USB flash drives begins to get erased/deleted if it is still connected to the tablet when the device is activated from hibernation mode. I don't know if the file explorer apps are causing this bug. I've used Linda File Manager and Astro and 3 different USB drives to test this. I've even restored my tablet to factory settings.
Hello,
I have also problems navigating the usb drive. As mentioned above I found the dir but it shows (Directory empty).Im using a 8gb transcend flash drive. On 128mb flash drive there is no problem viewing and accesing the files.Any other have the same problem or solution?
I change the file system from NTFS to FAT32 and it works now(such a stupid user Ive become)
on my iconia when i plug into computer i only see a500 internal files i go to storage and see sd i click on that and cant see any files. i know they are there because they are my zips for updates.when i mount into card reader i see them that is the only way. in applications the sd card is detected it shows me how large and how much space left. the only rom i can see is the xoom rom. right now im using tahooney its a real pain to have to take out card to put update files on when i reboot into recovery it detects there because im able to install other roms. any help is appreciated
Unfortunately, it's by design and it's Google's fault. I use a memory stick to transfer files, personally. It's WAY faster.
thanks it was driving me nuts tring to figure that out do apps and pictures go to the sd card or do they also need to be transferred i saw the android secure folder when i mounted on laptop. also can you update roms thru a memory stick i guess will recovery read it
Bugs me as wall and I do believe this issue it what causes many on here to end up with currupt update.zip files.I know it takes longer but I use network to move files or take SD card out. This eliminates a step from moving the file. Pain but it is what it is.
File manage HD seems to be the fastest for me to access network shares.and even my private FTP that I have hosted by just host.
Good luck
I've said it before, I will say it again. Droid Explorer.
Ok So I am here because I've posted in other places in these forums with no replies yet, So it would be better to create a thread specific to my problem.
I have an Omnia 2, thinking of acquiring the Fryo 2.2 OS, not specific about wether I want what version but here are the problems I come across before being able to install it.
1- plugging in my phone under Settings -> My storage will not show my storage on my computer, having the external SD option will show my 16GB SD card.
2- Backing up. How do I back up my storage if I can't see it on my computer? When I turn on active sync a blank storage appears other than my SD card (assuming its the internal storage) but the size seems rather small (167MB). I've been reading peoples' posts and I'm supposed to have around 2GB I believe, and either way the files I'm trying to put inside for the android OS don't seem to fit there.
3- Partitions? How can I set those up for both the internal and external storage? Is there a program or feature to do so? My SD card under properties says FAT-32 so I'm not sure on how to do it IF I need to.
4- Using a W7 computer, so that knocks off any ubuntu installations, and also link is broken for Almars Beta 1 file that I was thinking of using for an SD installation.
Any help would be appreciated, I've had this phone since 2009 and I'm really hoping I can come across some help to make it work since I do want to keep this phone for a bit longer before I spend more money on a different cellphone!
Thank you!
Try out the new CyanogenMod from the link below.
http://windows.modaco.com/topic/346446-cyanogenmod-beta1-omnia-2-updated-02122011/
It has the SD Card auto installer, try it..
Back up data on your SD card first and then format your SD card within the phone and then use auto installer to install it.
As you said your computer wont detect the My Storage, try the steps below..
Transfer your data from My Storage to external SD Card, then connect your phone to computer using My Storage mode in settings.
Download Mini Tool partition wizard and format your My Storage (Mini tool partition will be able to see your My Storage even though your computer doesn't).
After format, your computer should be able to detect My Storage.
Now copy the downloaded android files to My Storage and run the auto installer as instructed in the ReadMe file inside the download package.
PS: Don't forget to backup the data on SD Card to your computer
Hope this helps
Ok so what you meant by taking things from my storage is going to file explorer and basically copying everything from the "my device" to the SD card?
Just want to make sure because if it doesent work then I haven't gotten anything backed up right.
Went to file explorer -> copied everything in the top folder which is application date, connMgr, doc and setttings, program files etc. is this all thats needed basically?
Thanks
P.S some of the things I tried taking like global.txt or exe couldn't be copied because of violations or some weird error, is it alright not to have those?
Update: My storage is still not revealed by the mini tool partition program, went under usb settings -> my storage and refreshed disk information, nothing shows up ugh it might be impossible for me to do this after all....
nobody can help me in regards to this? well then I guess a new cellphone is in order
grrrrr I should've gone with a iphone 3G or BB 9700 at the time instead...

I guess you will have to reflash the ROM again since your problem seems to be unsolvable. My suggestions is to flash a stock 6.5.3 ROM before you transfer the auto SD installer.
Total noob here. I did the CM 10.1 and gapps (the proper version). All -seems- to work well except it doesn't appear that I can download anything to the internal storage even though there's about 800MB available (according to the Settings).
Example 1: I installed the DropBox app and it tells me I have to use an external SD card. Doesn't seem to be any way around this.
Example 2: I installed an eBook reader named "UB" and, when I ask for it to download the user guide (the link to it appears within the app in my bookshelf), the app advises that I don't have an external SD card (which is true).
I'm wondering if this sort of mod (Android overwriting the stock B&N Nook Color software) means that I can't use the internal storage. Is this normal? If so, I can live with that as a microSD card is cheap and has much more space. I'm just an inquiring mind that wants to know.
If there's some sort of setting that I've missed—remember, this is my first Android device—I'd appreciate a pointer.
By the way, it appears as though the old method of side-loading my non-drm'd epubs isn't available. Is there an app for this? IOW: How would I turn on filesharing or have the device mount when plugged into my Mac or access a shared folder -on- my Mac? (I can enable SMB on my Mac if necessary.) I imagine I can use a microSD and simply use ana adapter to get it mounted on my Mac if all else fails.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

You need to swap sdcards so that it considers your internal sdcard as your external sdcard. Go to my NC Tips thread linked in my signature and read item A16.

Tried the first suggestion in A16 (adding that one line of code) but, after a power-off / remove card / power-on, UB and Dropbox complain about not having a card.
Frankly, as long as the apps I install go to the internal storage (and they do), I don't mind leaving the SD card in place. An extra 16GB is a good thing.
Next up is finding an app that restores the original "mount as external HD when plugging in to Mac with USB cable" feature that was present in the original NC software.
Thanks,
Barry
