you're next phone manufacturer - Atrix 4G General

what's you're next phone manufacturer
and do you plan to change you're atrix in near future?

The Atrix is pretty good for me, enough so that I'm not planning on switching any time soon. As in, once my AT&T contract is up in a year, unlock it and take it to one of T-Mobile's value plans any time soon. It runs ICS so well that I'd have a hard time believing that it wouldn't be able to handle future versions of Android with an at least usable speed.
But when I do, it'll probably be a Samsung. Motorola has next to no dev support unless its a Droid (The Atrix seems like a happy accident to me from that standpoint), and HTC is half-assing its bootloader unlock solution. Software matters more to me than hardware, so its either a Nexus or something with lots of dev support, and that means Samsung.

Still waiting for the Sony Ion to surface. Thought the SGS3 would be better, so giving that a miss, and AT&T keeping One X bootloader locked just downright pissed me off. Rethinking carrier now too.

HTC for one x or Sony for the ion.

so my next phone will probably be htc or sony

Im a motorola woman. Never steered me wrong yet since my very first razr. So what its got a locked bootloader? So many dev out there that love to tinker or make a career out of hacking that the support is there, not with moto anymore. Ill stick with my atrix til the next best thing comes from moto.

I'll probably stick with Motorola, but make sure I buy a phone with an unlockable bootloader. They just make great hardware, I'll rely on the community for my software needs

Atrix with lapdock. Nothing can beat this combo at performance/price.Just bought me one and overally satisfied. It will keep me busy for a while until motorola releases a new razr hd maxx with better specs and 3300mah battery, most importantly with unlocked bootloader. Otherwise atrix forever.

partially leaving the atrix community tomorrow. Having terrible hardware problems with my phone. The in ear speaker doesn't work. The external speaker is starting to break on me. Screen has a terrible banding around the outer edge of the phone. Bought a galaxy nexus from the play store. Hopefully this phone turns out better than the atrix for me. Although I have to say, the dev. community is great here. But we did get lucky with the bootloader unlock. Thanks to kennethpenn for the leak.

Every Motorola phone I've had has lasted years, I still own my original razr and it still works perfectly. My Atrix has only had problems caused by me, either by faulty software installed or physical damaged caused by a fall.

Doesn't Motorola realize that their snail's pace update cycle is losing them customers? That is the #1 reason I probably won't get another Motorola.

What about this one ?
http://www.bsquare.com/snapdragon-mobile-development-platform.aspx

As an international user I can tell you I´ll think very carefully wether to get another motorola or not, and probably not. I´m very happy with my atrix but the fact that being looking for AT&T support, updates and roms obligates me thinking the true necesity to overcome this mobile life style, when there are companies like samsung which delivers international support by the minute.
If you are an US costumer you are relly good with Moto, as their upgrade/update forum claims to unleash ICS for every US device quite soon. Not the same to Int´l which still is in "Studying for future development" or whatever...
So, be wise and decide well

Already left. (not by choice, i dropped my atrix and repaired the screen. I broke it again a week later and also the charging port.) Picked up a Samsung Galaxy Note on att. I love it so far, not too sure on software support from them, but i love the phone. Id take a Tegra or OMAP over this darn Snapdragon though...

I totally agree, and love my HTC Nexus One.
But how long are we going to have to wait for the HTC dual core phone, and will it out-shine the Tegra cores they are using to develop Honeycomb on the Xoom?
Once the Atrix is out and people have used it for a few months, the kudos or complaints will start rolling in. Until then I don't think a fair judgement (negative or positive) can be made.
now this a nexus phone i could buy. screw the nexus s i refuse to buy a single core device in 2011.
The nexus S really was a ridiculous replacement to the N1, its the same damn phone with a new FF camera and multitouch. Screw that noise.
The day a Nexus device is released with dual cores, a FF camera, and true multitouch is the same day I will reture my N1
Id like to think by next January when the next Nexus device comes out (just guessing on the date) that it'll be something even better than a souped up Atrix. The Atrix looks good on paper, but I really want to see it in person. Wish it had Tmobile freqs. Hell, maybe by the time next Nexus comes out it will be one phone that could work on any US carrier.
The main reason I don't even consider motorola as a candidate for my new phone, is their locked down bootloader attitude. I do also love my HTC nexus one. I really like the atrix, exactly everything I want for my nexus one replacement,.except that its locked down. If motorola were to make a slightly upped UNLOCKED atrix, I'M THERE!!
Although I think I would prefer htc to make the next nexus, taking away the locked bootloader, motorola really is the next best choice

theres another article that you guys should read. I agree with the author that we don't want our gadgets to feel the same and look the same. we don't want a super-sized phone, do we? We want them tui be on the same operating system for ease of syncing and connecting to each other but we really don't want our gadgets just to be the same damn thing in different sizes. The next nexus phone made by motorola will be awesome because look what they've done to the atrix, that thing is a beast. Software wise, motorola has no control but google so no locked bootloader. I think that any manufacturer can develop a nexus phone but google just need to set high standards for its baby. And please one of the standard should be no or less plastic using. I'm sick of samsung using plastic all over its devices. conclusions: the next nexus phone can be based on honeycomb but with tweaked features and ui, any manufacturer that don't use plastic casing, there gotta be one killer feature that no other phone has . And yeah the nexus s was a shame. No sd card? Wtf?

After playing with an Atrix at CES, it is on my list for replacing my N1. I have full confidence that someone will figure out how to unlock the bootloader. Look at all the other phones that had bootloader security features that have been fixed by the many developers here.
Overall, have one that is unlocked already is ideal, but the Atrix is one phone that I can overlook a few things to have it. the phone really is a step forward.

you wouldnt want a custom rom on the atrix, because that would most likely break all the neat stuff it can do. root though, yeah.
The Atrix is on my list as well. I'm very happy indeed with my Nexus One (if I bought another phone I'd keep it just to mess around with and put custom ROM's etc on it). But the Atrix does look like a very good phone, and I'd be very happy if Moto did the next Nexus.

I've got my eye on the Atrix also.. unless anything better shows up on radar between now and May..
I don't think it will be an atrix
here's why
the atrix has a ton of custom code built into the system. So much that you can plug it into a laptop "thing" and browse using a tabbed firefox browser on a big screen.
Nexus devices are shipped with vanilla android x (being whatever the newest version is at the time.) Unless google starts supporting these laptop things in the native code, an atrix really couldn't be an option.
I do believe it will be motorola who produces the next nexus phone.
LG is new to the game, and no one else is really a contender (besides htc and samsung, they have the n1 and ns though)
Therefore, Motorola Nexus X?
Nah...no motorola nexus x. They'd be exactly like the ns : samsung nexus s. Nah we gotta find another letter or number to stand out. Motorola nexus infinity?

Haven't you heard? Google makes another operating system geared for laptops and for nettops. It's hot a huge stretch for the next Nexus phone to be able to run Honeycomb, and dual-boot to Chrome OS when plugged into the laptop dock. By definition the phone already has an "always-on" internet connection needed for Chrome OS, so we'd be getting the best of both worlds.

Motorola Photon?

This isnt the forum for this but this is where most of the sprint users go (and the evo forum)
I've seen all the topics about evo3d vs the GS2 but nothing on the motorola photon.
the specs are on the internet, but I'm not exactly sure how those specs would stack up to the GS2 or the evo3d.
I work right next to the motorola building in Ft. Lauderdale and I was able to talk to some of the people working on the phone and even use one of theres for a second.
It was running gingerbread with motoblur (although this version of motoblur looked really nice, and they told me it can be turned off.
They also told me that it will have a locked bootloader
They said they were told it was going to release by july 31st.
The phone felt very solid in my hand had some weight to it kinda like an iphone.
I manage a restaurant so i kind of overheard them talking about stuff like getting stuff through fcc and all sorts of debugging that had to do with problems popping back up on them. It was just very interesting to hear because it sounded like talk from these forums.
I wish i would have got a picture because I cant seem to find anything online thats not stock picture of the device.

Ha i know right
The Photon is not an upgrade from the Epic in any conceivable way. It has a lesser quality LCD display, weaker processor, locked bootloader (enjoy the stock rom and slight variants because that's all they get) and motorola's poor customer support.

I wouldn't be so unequivocal...
The Photon has a dual core processor, the Epic has a single core, plus it has a larger, and higher resolution display from the Epic. The guy who reviewed it from Phonescoop said the screen on the Photon is excellent, particularly compared to other motos. It also has the webtop software. As for the bootloader, Sprint will have to decide whether to let Motorola unlock it later in the year. If the bootloader does get unlocked then I personally would definitely consider it an upgrade from the Epic.
To the OP: it sounds like they are having issues with the FCC approval. That's not unusual. It's what held up the EVO 3D's release for a while too.
Had Sprint not f'd us over with the Premier program changes back in April, I'd be jumping from the Epic to the Photon on august 1st once my upgrade window opens. But no, no more yearly upgrade for one line, just 1/2 discount.
Looks like it is missing the keyboard too. Downgrade from the Epic.
No keyboard = not for me, but I saw the unboxing video online and it looked pretty solid. A friend of mine has a droid 3 on vzw, and if its ant indication of average moto ****, I like it. I do wanna see how they handle the unlocking of the bootloader.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I've been playing with it for the past couple of days, and I gotta say it's a really solid device. The webtop app is amazing, and I've been considering this phone just for that reason. All the different boot up options intrigue me as I don't know what they do. I'm not the biggest fan of the display as it's a pentile lcd, and I'm one of those people who can see the miniscule dots every time I look at it a certain way.
Also, I'm pretty confident moto will unlock it in time. I don't think OEMs can afford to alienate the dev community any longer.
Id say it has HUGE development potential, but sadly I don't think many devs will buy it. One of the main reasons I'm holding out for the within.
Which I hope, I hope, I hope, please god, give it a bigger dev community than the epic. I just might cry if it's left in the dust again by htc's inferior hardware.

I doubt, (even if it will exist) it will become the "Atrix 2". The Atrix has been out only 7 months (maybe 6?) and it's essentially the same phone with an extra 3 megapixels :/. What would be the point of this phone as a successor?
Atrix Upgrade
The new phone with have a faster 1.2 or 1.5 ghz processor, a larger 4.3 or 4.5" screen, curved edges on the screen, and better camera, and higher video rate.
I dont think this is the time to upgrade since its been announced that quad core phones as fast as 2.5 ghz will be released by xmas. So if you do upgrade now you will be upgrading again shortly. The android market is moving very fast.
Also Gingerbread is running nicely and I am happy with my phone.
Bigger screen, faster processor are upgrades I want. But I would also like my next phone to have a FM radio receiver. The Atrix has one but it does not work. The other exotic upgrade I would like to have is a built in TV receiver. A company in S Korea released a phone with a TV receiver in it but I have not seen it yet. That would certainly be an exotic upgrade and it could be a while before one is released here in the USA.
I also look forward to Ice Cream Sandwich but wil wait for the OTA release of that which officially be in November.
Not even an upgrade to be worthy as the ATRIX successor. More pixels, higher clocked chip, most likely a larger screen....ill pass and stay with my current oc'd ATRIX

I shared my thoughts on the Atrix 2 here: http://briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-2-upgraded-with-lte-photos
Why is there a 4G icon with signal blips? AT&T and Moto use the "H+" for HSPA+. Maybe this thing will have LTE after all is said and done. It is most definitely discouraging to hear "no LTE," though.
I didn't see a fingerprint sensor... so if I'm correct and there isn't one, that would mean the only upgrade is the camera. No wonder Google bought Motorola Mobility, I wouldn't want a company like that representing the Android brand :/

Have you guys seen what motorola does over on Verizon for its droids? DROID 1 DROID 2 and DROID 3 are all incremental updates. DROID x to DROID x2 as well. Why wouldn't Moto make a slightly different phone and call it new? Every phone manufacturer does this from Htc to Motorola to Apple.

All you have to do is look at nvidia's "Roadmap" of the tegra chips to see whats happening with them and what their plans are. Here is a link so you can see for yourselves, http://blogs.nvidia.com/2011/02/teg...-chip-worlds-first-quadcore-mobile-processor/ Anyway looking like you upgrade in 2012 than 2013 etc considering according to their roadmap they have new stuff coming every year up to 2014. Regardless though if it is a supposed "Atrix 2" seems sorta pointless considering what we can already do with a rooted unlock Atrix granted not like your layman would know any different.
Is it just me. Or is there no fingerprint reader?

The Atrix was a pretty big leap in terms of mobile technology when it came out and is still extremely competitive with other Dual Core phones especially with the custom ROM's.
My thoughts should be that the Atrix 2 should be released when it makes another big jump in terms of technology, not miniscule upgrades.

I agree. By the time Q3 kicks in, Quad core phones would be rolling out. Also, remember the Milestone debacle in regards to the Gingerbread roll out which was pushed further and further away. By the time it was released, the update was crap and slowed pretty much the phone down. I sold mine a few months prior to the GB update.
MOD/ROM Devs will either take another 2-4 extra months of tweaking or move on to better things. When Atrix was newly released it took around a few months for a decent ROM to come out. Another few months right after the bootloader was unlocked. Plus, it still depends on HOW MANY Devs will be producing Roms by then.
Understand also that, there are some Atrix owners that are wary of modding their phone. An average Joe wouldnt want to mess with it.
We are only but a handful of modders that are willing to take a leap of faith in phone customization. I got coworkers who own Android phones and are NOT interested in regards to roms/mods.
Currently, im in a dilemma of either switching to a Gnex or wait for the Quad. Only time will tell....
There are some other countries in the world except USA and Canada And in many of them carriers do not subsidize phones and even don't have contracts with fixed monthly payments. For example, I may pay nothing for several months if I only use wifi and accept incoming calls.
So I don't have a reason to buy something else. I think I will do it when a phone 4 cores, 2gb ram, micro sd slot, changeable battery, HDMI, NFC, LTE, unlockable bootloader appears. I don't believe this kind of phone with fully working CM7/9 will appear in Q3. Otherwise it doesn't worth buying, atrix remains one of the most powerful phones with great community support

Many people don't updgrade just because they can. I just had to pry my wife's fingers off her Nokia E71 to get her a free Atrix last month. I am going to leave it stock and locked. While I may be using a different phone a year from now she will still have the Atrix which means I will still have access to the lapdock! It will be nice to have ICS..
I love my Atrix and I'm happy about news.
I think I will use till it will break. I don't see any point upgrading even to Tegra 3 or whatever. For phone even Atrix hardware is overkill (for near future).
If you want get highest score in benchmarks, sure then you should upgrade phone alomst every other month...
I gotta agree the atrix is really good even tho newer devices are better they arent that much better than its worth an upgrade.......I preffer wating until there is a quad core phone with battery life that doesn't suck. Also 1Gb of RAM is pretty much the norm now and with about 100 apps on my device im reaching that limit already. Also who cares about the cores dual core phones right now aren't really doing much unless they're on ICS which actually takes advantage of both cores and even then most apps aren't optimized for dualcore so what is the point of four cores....??? there are advantages but still its just funny why take hardware so far instead make better software to utilize what you already have look at apple they dont even have dualcore iphones yet their devices are super smooth and this is coming from me and I hate apple so much.
My main piint is atrix with ICS means that neither att or manufactures will get my money until they got something that really stands out with good hardware and good software and i know most phone are still gonna be on gingerbread probably until this years end....

[Q] Atrix 4G ICS Dead?? What will be your next phone?

I am getting tired of always picking the company that least supports its product. I really love the Atrix 4G but I need to move to ICS for security reasons at work. I have waited patiently only to be denied in the end.
That being said, I am looking for a company that not only delivers what they are promissing but activly maintains thier products.
What will be your next phone/manufacturer?
Nexus will be best option. At least it will be updated without false commitments.

I had a run of Android devices, bit sick of constant update crap, and I'm not giving Google more of my money for a nexus after they shafted us.
So I'm going back to iOS for a while, had a play with an iPhone 5 yesterday; it was damn nice. Same size, but nicer, screen as the Atrix, half the thickness and feels really good quality wise. Camera is awesome.
Maybe when it's due for an update there will be another platform to try out.

That is some bad news to hear, would of been great to see a ICS/JB rom developed by Notorious544d
Thankfully I sold my Atrix last tuesday and currently looking to buy a HTC One X since they are the best deal right now Hardware/Price...
I am done with motorolla. I said screw this and I ordered a Galaxy nexus today. I was going to sit on it and run out my contract but this was the last straw. I am going to pull the phone off the net showing that this move kills the phone. It me moving off of motorala. It means no increased sales for motorola it means more sales for other companies.
I'm planning on getting a Nexus phone next. It will probably be quite more than a year before I can ditch this thing, though. At least I have my Nexus 7.
Wait, you guys are pissed off with Motorola so you paid a premium for a phone from Google who owns Motorola? And who, in all probability, killed our update?
That'll show them your outrage.
