I know there are many rooting problem things, but this is different. I am stuck in limbo, it is booting up with no way to turn off. I have no idea what to do.
I used TouchNooter, and it failed.
Please, someone help me fix my never used nook.
So pressing the power button for 20+ seconds does nothing?
Update!
I got it! I tried to restore it, and once it was restored it was also rooted. Amazing, huh?
Anyway, now when I change screens it has odd outlines of everything on the last page.
I ran into the same problem rooting with TouchNooter: rooting failed to complete as prescribed in the rooting instruction, then reverting to stock using n2T-Recovery left my NST in a state much like yours including noticeable ghosting image from prior screen displays.
Finally, I used TouchFormatter to revert to stock and then was able to re-root with successfully MinimalTouch. MinimalTouch's rooting process seems more complicated but in practice is straightforward and works just as prescribed in the instruction.

I did pretty much the same, but I tried the Touchnooter twice. Ended up using MinimalTouch.
Rooting with Touchnooter 2.1.31 FAIL
I have a new NST. Upgraded firmware to 1.1.2 and am registered with B&N. Also have several books loaded on my NST.
FIRST I backed up my Nook using the winimage tool and saved that file in case I have to restore.
SECOND I followed the directions exactly to get the proper touchnooter image on my 2gig microSD card using winimage. All went well. I checked the card and all files appear to be there.
NEXT I attempted to root my NST. Here's what I did, step by step:
1. I powered off the Nook
2. I inserted the SDcard with TouchNooter 2.1.31
3. I then powered on the Nook
4. Got the TouchNooter screen which says to wait for the black screen flash, remove SDcard, then reboot.
5. About 20 seconds later saw a quick black flash
6. Immediately the next screen (the Nook startup screen) with the 5 dots appeared.
7. The Nook hung at this screen, with the first dot black. I waited about 10 min. just to be safe.
8. Nothing else happened
THEN I:
9. Removed the microSD card
10. Powered off the Nook
11. Powered the Nook back on
AND....
The Nook was NOT rooted, I saw the READ FOREVER startup screen and the Nook started up as normal with no root.
I never saw the "Rooted Forever" screen.
I tried rooting my NST 2 more times.
Same outcome.
Can someone PLEASE explain how to get Touchnooter 2.1.31 to actually work?
My nook still says "Read forever" when I boot up, but I believe it is rooted. Touchnooter, same process as yours.
What happens after it boots up now?
Do you see the button saviour arrow on the right edge close to the middle?
"rooted forever" shows up if you're booting using noogie. I don't think you'll see that screen from TouchNooter. It should boot up looking normal but once you "unlock" the screen after first boot you would see the little android robot that takes you through setup.
First I see the Read Forever screen.
Then after it boots up it flashes then goes to the author screensaver and I have to slide to unlock. I do not see any android symbol or button saviour on the right edge. The screensaver takes up all the real estate.
Once I slide to unlock the screen goes to wherever I was before in my Nook. Usually the home screen.
If there's an android symbol appearing...I'm not seeing it.

When I used TouchNooter it would reset my firmware version back to showing 1.1, so I ended up using MinimalTouch to root. It stayed on the black screen when it "flashed to black" for me, though. You could try restoring back to 1.1 and then using TouchNooter, or give MinimalTouch a try?

I believe your nook is not rooted then. You should try again with touchnooter.
I tried 3 more times.
Same result.
Then I tried using MinimalTouch.
Also the same result with the screen ending up at the Nook login screen with the 5 dots and stopping there, hanging.
I don't know what to do to get this NST rooted.

Between my 1st and 2nd attempt with TouchNooter, I did do a factory reset using the settings menu, and re register the device to B&N.

Hello,
So i've tried to root the nook. Copied the touchnooter on my card, booted the nook. And then : forever stuck on the "root forever" or the "read forever" (when i get the card off)..
The hard reboot (20 sec on power off) doesn't work and i'm stuck at this "read forever" screen.
Is there a way to recover the nook ?
Thanks.. !
When doing the hard power off (long press) the screen doesn't usually change and you might be fooled into believing nothing happened.
Have you tried to let the unit settle for 10 seconds and then press power for a few seconds to see if it tries to boot?
Hey,
thanks for replying. I have tried a 30 sec hard boot + a reboot try but nothing happened. It freezes on the "nook is starting screen".
I afraid i have broke my device... But strangely i followed the rooting steps and nothing seemed to do wrong.. I guess.
Bye
If you can in fact get the unit to start booting, just long press power (10s +) as soon as you see the unit try to boot to interrupt the boot, then power it on again and repeat this procedure for 8 times (sucks, yes I know) and you should drop into factory reset.
Ok so i have to say : WTF !
So this morning i looked at my nook and saw that it still was on the "reading forever"/"starting" thing. As i saw your advice i tried to boot 8 time..
On the first boot attempt : it worked ! So maybe is was the eighth..
The nook started and asked me if i wanted to continue with android guy or "es something"... so i pressed android guy..
SO now i don't really know if the procedure went well ? Is it supposed to be rooted now ?
Thanks anyway for the time you took replying !
I hope my english is not too hard to read.
Bye,
By "android guy" I guess you're referring to the Android Welcome screen?
That would suggest that the Touchnooter went trough successfully.
Did you get Go Launcher and ButtonSavior up and running?
IIRC, whenever you do a fresh boot and try to use ButtonSavior you'll get a notice saying ButtonSavior has been granted superuser access, which would indicate that you're successfully rooted.
I had a similar problem, using touchnooter 1.11.20 and it was too quick. Maybe 45 seconds, removed card and restarted. Stuck in a boot loop, on tne "Nook" screen with the little blocks move across the screen and just keeps restarting. Fortunately I made a backup and was able to restore. Not sure what the problem is but I tried TouchNooter 5 times, downloaded it twice, wrote it to the SD cars 3 times and same result, Stuck on the nook screen, animation gets to the 4th dot and restarts. Tried salsichaNooter .4 with the same result. Any ideas on what the problem could be? It would be really nice if I could get a decent reader on this thing.
I made my life a little easier by having 2 micro SD cards to use, nookie on one and touchnooter on the other. I also made sure I had a good backup of my original ROM by opening the image with 7zip and the nook with partition wizard and verifying they were the same. At least I can gat it back to a working stock rom.
Why dont you try my new method?

PS:
..... insomnia Sucks......
Thanks, I'll see if this works.
Not really insomnia, trying to get this fixed before I have to put my wife on a plane. It's her nook touch, I have a color, it was so much easier.
I'm having a similar problem: I used SalsichaNooter, I let Rooted Forever to be on the nook screen for an hour, there were no messages on the screen no progress indication of any sort. I did a hard reboot after an hour and it seems at least some part of the rooting script worked - but how do i know the nook was rooted all the way through since it didnt reaboot during the rooting process as it should?
Okay, I've seen a lot of "I bricked my Nook Touch" posts around, and floating everywhere but none of their solutions worked. I used the TouchNooter step by step, got the checksum right, did everything right.
Loaded the SD card, restart the nook, BAM! Got stuck on the dreaded "Rooted Forever" screen.
Here's what I've tried so far:
redoing the process
booting without sd card
booting again WITH sd card
8 failed boots
factory reset (bottom left and right and the power button)
30 seconds power button hold, 10 seconds without, 10 seconds holding it down
I think that's about it. i'm just about ready to throw this thing out, seriously. Any other ideas?
I think I'll keep on trying to do the 8 failed boots thing

As you're able to power down and reboot your Nook I wouldn't even call it bricked. Bricked is when your hardware fails or you manage to screw up your bootloader
I always get stuck on the "Rooted Forever" screen or boot animation when using either Noogie or TouchNooter image, but the process still works, so this doesn't really indicate that something went terribly wrong.

1,2,3: Unless a simple reboot without the SD card helped this ain't gonna do much good.
4: This usually helps if you can mange to trigger it, it will properly replace both boot and system.
5: This is completely useless. As far as I've seen all it does is clean your /data/app folder and not much more.
6: Never heard of this, can't imagine what it's supposed to do.
One thing you can try the original NookDevs rooting process , see if that kicks your boot into working order again. This is my preffered rooting method.
Your best bet is trying to trigger the 8-failed boot recovery. I've done this a few times on my N2 and it can be a little tricky.
May I ask what version you're running? 1.0.0 or 1.0.1 ?
Thanks.
As far as 6 goes, I saw it on a few forums on the 'net and it was said to break the boot cycle.
I suppose it's not "completely bricked" but I've spent so long with it, trying to get it to work that I'm really, about to ready to throw it away.
I'll try the original guide, hopefully that will trigger it.
It's a 1.0.0, I got it a week after it came out (and it's been bricked since the first TouchNooter came out).
Also, how should I try to do the 8 failed boot recovery? Half the time, it's hard to tell if it's booting, or if it's turned off o.o the only difference I saw is when the Nook is plugged in. Any ideas?

First you need to check whether long pressing power will reboot or just power down you Nook. From my experience a unit that "hangs" on boot will power down when the power button is pressed for at least 10 seconds, while a successfully booted unit will simply reboot.
The following is based on my experience with "hung" units:
Prereqs:
- No USB cable attached (not even charger!)
- No SD Card inserted
Steps:
1: 12 second press (to be sure) for power down
- most likely you'll see no change in the screen!
2: Wait 5 seconds for Nook to settle
3: Press power for 4 seconds to turn it back on
4: Goto step 1 as soon as you see the screen flicker!
- Do not wait for boot animation, a simple flicker is enough!
Repeat 8 times
Also, see this thread for a factory restore image
I wonder, if desperate, whether JTAG could be used.
It is REALLY too bad that some people are so impatient.
When it says "rooted forever", that does NOT mean that the process has completed. It means that the process has ONLY STARTED. Give it some time.
WAIT.
Wait 20 minutes.
It will complete.
Be patient.
If you have to, pull out the battery from the thing.
Then put in the special sdcard.
Plug the battery back in, plug the charge plug in.
Turn on.
WALK AWAY AND COME BACK TOMORROW.
Sorry, but I wouldn't call myself impatient. I pre-charged my nook to full charge before attempting rooting. I left the Nook alone without restarting it until I realized it may need charging again. It was THEN that I tried to restart it.
"WALK AWAY AND COME BACK TOMORROW" <- Yeah, I did that.
However, I do admit, I was expecting a quicker root/rom flash I'm used to my Samsung Vibrant

How do you know it's not turning on?
Thread moved. Development goes in the development section, questions in the general section. Thanks.
okay, fast forward a few months forward. I did figure out that the nook DOES turn on but it's probably stuck on an infinite loop. I was successful in booting several different "recoveries". There was a tool a few months back that removed root. The "recovery" booted but didn't help.
Since then I tried the new CWR and it booted! I was so excited. I did the whole "factory reset" and deleted all of the caches. Didn't help, the screen still showed "Rooted Forever". I tried to use the "Touch Formatter", unfortunately, that didn't help either. I used the TouchNooter again but again, nothing happened.
Any suggestions? I haven't seen a "stock" image or anything like that to boot into anywhere.
If your partitions are still intact and you haven't overwritten your rom-partition by writing a touchnooter or cwm img-file directly to the nook you could try the following:
-Create a sd-card with cwm,
-download nook_1_1_update_cwm.zip from http://code.google.com/p/nst-recovery/downloads/list and copy it to the sd
-boot into cwm
-use the install zip from sd-card function to apply the update.
The nook_1_1_update_cwm.zip contains the original update to 1.1, it is just repacked to be usable with cwm. That means, if you want root, you have to root afterwards.
The nook_1_1_update.zip that you get directly from Barnes & Noble is a standard zip file with with a signature attached to the beginning. You can strip off the first 0x1A8 (424) bytes and open it with any unzipper.

Steps 1-4 solved an infinite loop loading problem with Nook Simple Touch (firmware 1.1).
okay, that seems to have helped some. The Nook boots into a "Read Forever" with a "starting up" thing on the bottom (basically the way stock looks) instead of "Rooted Forever" but it seems like it's in a bootloop, stays on the same screen and never progresses. I'm going to try the n2T to trigger a factory reset. Hopefully, that'll work :/
n2t did not work. Not sure what to do next.
...my effort to install Android on my new NOOK Color went smoothly until it started to boot and the boot screen just keeps spinning.
Read many posts appearing to address this issue but reverting to a stock reader seems to require various apps only for a PC. Being a Mac weenie this leaves me out in the cold.
...is there a Mac-centric reader here who can help me return my NOOK into the reader it originally was?
I'm a bit gun shy now of making the device both an Android tablet and a reader! Thanks much in advance.
...addendum!
...playing around with the NOOK I was able to raise a reboot option which, to my surprise, cured whatever fault was behind the boot loop. A couple of spins and CM7 in all its glory appeared.
...but now I can only reboot into CM7...seems to be no option to boot into the original B&N book/magazine reader.
What am I missing? What's the "open sesame" to choose the reader? Tnx again.

One thing your missing is giving us information regarding your setup and what you want and/or are expecting.
Is this a SD install of CM7? If so... when you power it up... press and hold "n" button to get the boot menu... selecting eMMC / Normal boot will boot into stock.

...yes, I did an SD install of CM7 with all the Google apps, etc.
My objective is to be able to toggle back and forth between the B&N reader and the Android tablet. If this isn't possible I'd like to go back to the reader.
Unfortunately I can't get the boot menu with the "n" button when I power up. Andoid mounts and a white screen offers only "power off" or "re-boot"...no other options.
...following the instructions I used from the web for installing CM7 I removed the SD card before I formatted, etc. Is this an issue?
Looping Problem
Okay so I think I may have the same problem hopefully someone can help. So first I install CM7 and then it gave me when I tried opening the market so I was like okay... so then I downloaded and install manuelnooker and now im boot looping .. So I insert the SD and turn it on but it doesnt boot up to recovery. I only see CM7 and then it boot loops into Nook Color With the big N on top and the small android bottom right corner. Can anyone help me out on what is the best way to get back into recovery. I know if I turn it on while holding the N its says CM7 and in the bottom it shows recovery but never goes to it. Much help please..
Okay so I finally got into CWR but now it gives me an error formatting data when I select mounts and storage and select format data? Im trying to revert back the nook color using nook complete restore 1.0.1. and I try doing it format data in the opening screen but I flash the zip and boot loops. any help is much appreciated.. Thanks
...some progress!
...less sleep but some progress.
...after several unsuccessful attempts I finally got the NOOK to restore to factory specs with the "8 interrupted boot" sequence [can't post the URL because I don't have eight posts yet :-( ].
Wasn't necessary to do the second step described in the post...NOOK automatically did the restore after zeroing the data and my B&N account can be accessed without more.
...but now I no longer have Android capability. Is there any way to install a simple toggle mechanism for both on the same tablet?

Hi guys. I tried to make a backup of my Nook Simple Touch Glowlight (NSTG) before rooting it using Noogie image file, but I now have a bricked NSTG. This is what I did:
1. Using WinImage on my Windows 7 computer I wrote the Noogie image to a Sandisk 8GB micro sd card.
2. I turned the Nook off completely.
3. I inserted the micro sd card into the NSTG card slot.
4. I connected the NSTG via USB cable to my computer and the Nook rebooted and displayed the ROOTED FOREVER screen.
5. Before I did anything else, I ejected the NSTG by right clicking the NSTG icon on my desktop and detached the USB cable from the NSTG. I just wanted to make sure I could reboot into my NSTG before making the backup.
6. The NSTG never rebooted.
7. I removed the battery and the ROOTED FOREVER screen is still displayed.
8. I reconnected the battery and it will still not reboot.
Any suggestions as to how I can reboot the NSTG.
Bill
When you have the rooted Forever screen it takes quite a bit of effort to get the nook to restart.
Press and hold the power button numerous times. Hold the power button for at least three full seconds, even longer.
I actually pressed the back switch several times and did so for more than a few seconds, but to no avail. I going to leave it alone for a while with the battery unplugged and then plug the battery back in and see what happens. Any other suggestions are welcome.
Bill
I have tried to reboot the NSTG holding the back button several times, it does not reboot. I have tried to root with an sd card and the NSTG does reboot to run the software on the micro sd, but it hangs at the rebooting without the micro sd in the NSTG. The NSTG does boot from the micro sd, but it will not complete the process of rebooting when I reboot after installation of the software. I have tried the Alpha format touch 2 with the clock work mod rc2 and the NSTG will not complete the rebooting after I remove the micro sd card. I have tried the tinynoot with the clock work mod rc2 and it is the same result. Does anyone know how I can get the NSTG to reboot without the micro sd card to get it working again?
Bill

Please do not remove the battery.
Do remove the sdcard.
The bottom front button is not the power button. Do not use this to reboot.
The power button is at the rear of the nook, at the very top. Press and hold numerous times.
I would recommend using Glownooter for rooting your US Nook glow. http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/20...using-glownooter-includes-googles-app-market/
If you are using the Alpha Format Touch that I am thinking of, then this is for the UK, not US, Nook.
Tinynoot is not great for a first timer, it has minimal apps which you will find hard to use initially.
Glownooter is much better for rooting the first time.
I would suggest you use these instructions to first restore your nook
http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/20...-and-restore-nook-glow-and-nook-simple-touch/
with all the rooting and re-rooting you have done I can't be sure what state your nook is in now.
Start up your nook, be sure you are back to the original.
Then try again using Glownooter.

I just want to check one other thing - what software version is installed on your nook.
Glownooter is only for firmware 1.1.5
Use Tinynoot for firmware 1.2
Alpha Format Touch works for UK Nook firmware 1.2, but does not have satisfactory results for US Nook on 1.2
I had a nook simple touch and decided to root it etc.
I originally used the touchnooter from the following lifehacker post:
lifehacker -/5889158/turn-a-99-nook-into-a-fully-fledged-android-tablet-in-four-easy-steps
It all went fine but then if froze on the 'your nook is starting up' screen.
but I realised that my nook was on FW 1.2.1 so I factory reset it.
it still hangs on the same screen.
then i tried rooting it using the nook manager method on this site:

this all seemed to go fine but alas still stuck on the same screen!
So I factory reset it again!
and lo and behold still stuck on the same screen!
I am sorta at my wits ends so any help would be much appreciated!

I'm still new at this (I had the same problem as you last night, actually).
I forgot that the SD card was still in the NST. The NST boots off the SD card first (compared to the interal file system) if the SD card contains a bootable image. If you take the SD out, it will boot on the internal file system and not the SD card. My problem was I had a faulty boot image on my SD card and so it was hanging on the boot because of that.
So I would take out the SD card and then hold the power button down until it reboots. Then immediately press the bottom two buttons on the front at the same time until it asks you to factory wipe, which is sounds like you have done before. I did this and it started up again, just like new.
Although you said that you used NookManager, which asks you to take out your SD card before it reboots, right? So maybe my help is of no use.
Right, the SD card was out and I tried the factory reset again anyway.
Still no luck.
cheers for your help though.
Anyone else have any ideas?
