Bricked using Noogie - Nook Touch General

Hi guys. I tried to make a backup of my Nook Simple Touch Glowlight (NSTG) before rooting it using Noogie image file, but I now have a bricked NSTG. This is what I did:
1. Using WinImage on my Windows 7 computer I wrote the Noogie image to a Sandisk 8GB micro sd card.
2. I turned the Nook off completely.
3. I inserted the micro sd card into the NSTG card slot.
4. I connected the NSTG via USB cable to my computer and the Nook rebooted and displayed the ROOTED FOREVER screen.
5. Before I did anything else, I ejected the NSTG by right clicking the NSTG icon on my desktop and detached the USB cable from the NSTG. I just wanted to make sure I could reboot into my NSTG before making the backup.
6. The NSTG never rebooted.
7. I removed the battery and the ROOTED FOREVER screen is still displayed.
8. I reconnected the battery and it will still not reboot.
Any suggestions as to how I can reboot the NSTG.
Bill

When you have the rooted Forever screen it takes quite a bit of effort to get the nook to restart.
Press and hold the power button numerous times. Hold the power button for at least three full seconds, even longer.

I actually pressed the back switch several times and did so for more than a few seconds, but to no avail. I going to leave it alone for a while with the battery unplugged and then plug the battery back in and see what happens. Any other suggestions are welcome.
Bill

I have tried to reboot the NSTG holding the back button several times, it does not reboot. I have tried to root with an sd card and the NSTG does reboot to run the software on the micro sd, but it hangs at the rebooting without the micro sd in the NSTG. The NSTG does boot from the micro sd, but it will not complete the process of rebooting when I reboot after installation of the software. I have tried the Alpha format touch 2 with the clock work mod rc2 and the NSTG will not complete the rebooting after I remove the micro sd card. I have tried the tinynoot with the clock work mod rc2 and it is the same result. Does anyone know how I can get the NSTG to reboot without the micro sd card to get it working again?
Bill

I am not clear on something - at first it seems you are saying the nook does not reboot

but then you describe how you have rooted via alpha format touch and tinynoot.
When you root via these two, I presume you using the clockworkmod sdcard - so do you get the nook to power up to the clockworkmod screen?
When you have the rooted forever screen - leave the battery in, remove the sdcard - and then press and hold the power button numerous times.
Do you have UK or US nook?

I have the US NSTG. At first I had the ROOTED FOREVER screen and tried rebooting exactly as you suggested, but it did not work. I tried to reboot this way several times as you suggested, but it would not reboot. Finally I decided to try and reboot using the Alpha format and the Tinynoot. I have used the clockworkmod sdcard with these two and yes, it does get to the clockworkmod screen and actually installs the zip files, but when I remove the battery and click the bottom front button to reboot, the screen flashes once and does not reboot. The screen now displays the description of the last step by step installation process I tried with Tinynoot. Any suggestions on how to get the NSTG to reboot?

Please do not remove the battery.
Do remove the sdcard.
The bottom front button is not the power button. Do not use this to reboot.
The power button is at the rear of the nook, at the very top. Press and hold numerous times.
I would recommend using Glownooter for rooting your US Nook glow. http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/20...using-glownooter-includes-googles-app-market/
If you are using the Alpha Format Touch that I am thinking of, then this is for the UK, not US, Nook.
Tinynoot is not great for a first timer, it has minimal apps which you will find hard to use initially.
Glownooter is much better for rooting the first time.
I would suggest you use these instructions to first restore your nook
http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/20...-and-restore-nook-glow-and-nook-simple-touch/
with all the rooting and re-rooting you have done I can't be sure what state your nook is in now.
Start up your nook, be sure you are back to the original.
Then try again using Glownooter.

I just want to check one other thing - what software version is installed on your nook.
Glownooter is only for firmware 1.1.5
Use Tinynoot for firmware 1.2
Alpha Format Touch works for UK Nook firmware 1.2, but does not have satisfactory results for US Nook on 1.2

[Q] Nook will not even turn on!

Yes, I searched, but nothing I found seemed similar to my situation.
Here is the timeline of events:
Rooted my nook with autonooter a long time ago.
Decided last weekend that I wanted to install CM7.
Installed Rom Manager, CWM, etc. Then installed CM7.
Decided that I wanted to bring my nook back to stock so I could check out the 1.2 update.
Restored it back to stock using Option #1 in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914690&highlight=reset+stock
It worked fine the past few days.
Then last night I decided I would try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045018
I burned the image to the SDcard, expanded the partition in order to be able to use the SDcard for storage. Placed the sdcard in my nook.
It wouldnt boot at all. The screen refused to turn on.
I tried it many different ways, holding the 'n' button while turning it on, holding the volume buttons, etc.
Then i took the sdcard out of the nook and tried booting it.
It still wouldnt turn on. The screen simply would not turn on. Finally after a few tries, it did turn on. So I shut it off for the night and thought I'd try again today.
I tried to turn it on again today (without the sdcard in the nook) and it will not turn on. I've tried it about 25 times. Holding the power button for many different time intervals.
And yes, its charged. It was fully charged last night.
Any idea what I can do here??
Connect it with power cable (no matter if its charged) and try to turn it on by Power button.
Then restore it to original rom.

Unfortunately, I'm at work and dont have my power cable with me.
I have a compatible USB cable that I can plug into the computer, but I already tried that and it didnt work.
Also, the nook should be on the stock rom already. It was on stock 1.2 before I tried the dualboot sd card last night.
OK, so I just tried turning it on for the 50th time today, and for some reason it worked.
It was not plugged into anything, I didnt do anything differently.
Just held the power button.
Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
My nook is stock 1.2.
I had a similar problem, and I thought mine was bricked. I used WinImage to create a ClockworkMod boot microSD card. Holding the power button for ten seconds performs a manual power down, release, then hold it for another three to five seconds. It will boot to ClockworkMod Recovery.
Now, I had installed HC update RC3 from a week ago, and it worked just fine. The dev releases a hybrid with the Asus Eee Pad Transformer this week, and I tried updating to it. It caused my Nook screen to not turn on just like yours.
Once in ClockworkMod, I can reinstall the zip files, but it still won't turn the screen on unless in Recovery. When I try to restore my backup of CM7, it says there is an "MD5 error." Not sure what that is or how to fix. Maybe you can help me?

Well it sounds like our problems are very different. However, I have some experience with your problem with my thunderbolt.
When I got an MD5 error, it meant that there was something wrong with the name of my backup. Does your backup have spaces in the name? Or did you change the name of it after creating it?
Unfortunately, I was never able to recover the backup with the MD5 error.
If you can get into recovery, it sounds like you should be able to restore your nook to stock via this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914690&highlight=reset+stock
If I were you, I would return my nook to stock and start over.

[Q] Problem installing gapps using cyanogenmod 7 on nook color sd card boot

If anyone can help I would appreciate it.
I followed this post about installing cyanogenmod 7 onto an SD card to boot my nook color off of the SD card.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
Everything worked great and it has been up and running for several days, very happy with the results.
Now I was trying to put gapps on the SD card and I followed the instructions shown below:
How to install market and gapps:
After you have booted into the CM7 on SD card for the first time and set up wifi access (important!)
Go to http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.ph...Latest_Version and at the end there is a table with various google apps versions. Get the one suitable for your cyanogen version (CM7 is the latest for now). The file is named gapps-....zip
shutdown your nook and take the SD card out, insert it into your computer.
Copy the gapps-... file to the SD card on the first partition (titled boot) without changing the file name.
Insert the uSD card back into the NOOK and boot into "Recovery mode." To boot into recovery mode: Boot normally into Android, then from desktop hold power key until a poweroff menu appears, In the poweroff menu choose "reboot", in the next menu choose "recovery" and press "OK". The nook would reboot straight into recovery.
So i have tried this several times and DL the file twice just to be sure but every time I reboot the system just comes up normally. I wonder if the gapps install package is named wrong? I don't know how to make this work.
Any suggestions?
Thank A LOT for your help!

turn on the NC, like normal, then power down, then you'll get option to reboot, reboot to recovery.
I'm sorry if my original post didn't make this clear, but I was trying to boot into recovery. I held down the power button until I got the shut down options and pressed restart then pressed recover mode. Every time I try this the nook just restarts in normal mode. I'm not sure if I've done something wrong or if this method doesn't work.
Just to give more information the file I used was:
gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip
I didn't unzip the file I just copied it to the SD card BOOT partition.
Seems like you've done what eggnoodle suggested and if it didn't work, the only choice is using combination of N & power button. It needs some skills.
Try that, won't hurt.
I tried that several times, and it didn't work.
Is there a way to verify if I am in recovery mode? I'm not sure I am actually making it into recovery mode.
Further down in the instructions it says that to install other stuff anything with the name "update-***.zip" will install on recovery mode. So I will try renaming the gapps file to this and give it a try.
If you see the "Penguin" with scrolling text running horizontally on the NC screen, then it is in the Recovery mode.
If you see the Android guy or CM7 logo, you are in the normal booting mode.
Ok, so my problem is that I can never get the nook color in recovery mode. Perhaps the instructions on the forum are kinda flawed.
This is what I am doing:
Hold down Nook button.
Hold down power button
Loading screen appears then goes blank
Release power button for less than a second
Hold down power button again.
Wait for loading screen to appear
Release power button
Wait for screen to go blank
Release the Nook button
Then the NC just boots up like normal. Is this the correct process?
The NC boots up normal if I choose restart in recover mode from the shutdown menu also.
Any suggestions?
As I said, you need some skills.
Don't panic!
After a few tries and when you get it in, you will mumble "hmm, it's nothing like the instructions, it's much simply than that, wheewwww"

Did you try going into recovery while in CM7 by powering it off and selecting reboot>reboot to recovery?
I did try that, just boots up in normal mode.
I cannot get this thing to work, I have also tried several different ways to boot up using the home button and power button I can find a combination that works.
so frustrating!
Maybe start over fresh with Cm7 and gapps install?
I intall CM7 and gapps at the same time...
Just to be clear I didn't try this because the instructions said do not do it.
Ok, so I reinstalled with gapps and cyanogenmod zip files both on the boot SD before it was installed and it took, but there were a few hang ups like it kept bringing in stuff from my phone when I linked to my google account. So I think I should be good.
Thanks for the suggestions.
That happen to me too. It installed a wallpaper that was on my phone that I no longer use. Strange? But as long as it worked, that what I cared about!
Yup same thing to me, it installed the wallpaper and some other apps.
Why won't it install angry birds, the market says it's not compatible? What the heck's up with that?
If you are having issues booting into recovery when booting onto the SD card. This post should help

The new market has issues with nook color. Market is looking for a 160 density level when the nook color is set to 161 to avoid panics.
Ive been using LCDDensity from the market and choosing Density 160 and changing the drop down to killall and click apply (reboot)
after it reboots go into manage applications and do a force stop on the market and clear the data/cache
it will reload and you will see all the options until the market resets itself. very annoying i know but its a temp fix until someone figures out how to fix this
Forget that stupid method with the buttons, it's a waste of time.
I tried it both ways and it doesn't work.

I have the same problem as Steveolio and followed exactly the same procedures. Maybe these error messages from recovery boot help some experts with a good idea:

Lets see if you have gapps installer too.
Gapps installer not found, skipping installation.
Flashing caches
Clearing recovery flag

1+0 records out

Does that possibly mean gapps file is not in the right location?
thank you

Nook Touch - completely bricked, no joke

Okay, I've seen a lot of "I bricked my Nook Touch" posts around, and floating everywhere but none of their solutions worked. I used the TouchNooter step by step, got the checksum right, did everything right.
Loaded the SD card, restart the nook, BAM! Got stuck on the dreaded "Rooted Forever" screen.
Here's what I've tried so far:
redoing the process
booting without sd card
booting again WITH sd card
8 failed boots
factory reset (bottom left and right and the power button)
30 seconds power button hold, 10 seconds without, 10 seconds holding it down
I think that's about it. i'm just about ready to throw this thing out, seriously. Any other ideas?
I think I'll keep on trying to do the 8 failed boots thing

As you're able to power down and reboot your Nook I wouldn't even call it bricked. Bricked is when your hardware fails or you manage to screw up your bootloader
I always get stuck on the "Rooted Forever" screen or boot animation when using either Noogie or TouchNooter image, but the process still works, so this doesn't really indicate that something went terribly wrong.

1,2,3: Unless a simple reboot without the SD card helped this ain't gonna do much good.
4: This usually helps if you can mange to trigger it, it will properly replace both boot and system.
5: This is completely useless. As far as I've seen all it does is clean your /data/app folder and not much more.
6: Never heard of this, can't imagine what it's supposed to do.
One thing you can try the original NookDevs rooting process , see if that kicks your boot into working order again. This is my preffered rooting method.
Your best bet is trying to trigger the 8-failed boot recovery. I've done this a few times on my N2 and it can be a little tricky.
May I ask what version you're running? 1.0.0 or 1.0.1 ?
Thanks.
As far as 6 goes, I saw it on a few forums on the 'net and it was said to break the boot cycle.
I suppose it's not "completely bricked" but I've spent so long with it, trying to get it to work that I'm really, about to ready to throw it away.
I'll try the original guide, hopefully that will trigger it.
It's a 1.0.0, I got it a week after it came out (and it's been bricked since the first TouchNooter came out).
Also, how should I try to do the 8 failed boot recovery? Half the time, it's hard to tell if it's booting, or if it's turned off o.o the only difference I saw is when the Nook is plugged in. Any ideas?

First you need to check whether long pressing power will reboot or just power down you Nook. From my experience a unit that "hangs" on boot will power down when the power button is pressed for at least 10 seconds, while a successfully booted unit will simply reboot.
The following is based on my experience with "hung" units:
Prereqs:
- No USB cable attached (not even charger!)
- No SD Card inserted
Steps:
1: 12 second press (to be sure) for power down
- most likely you'll see no change in the screen!
2: Wait 5 seconds for Nook to settle
3: Press power for 4 seconds to turn it back on
4: Goto step 1 as soon as you see the screen flicker!
- Do not wait for boot animation, a simple flicker is enough!
Repeat 8 times
Also, see this thread for a factory restore image
I wonder, if desperate, whether JTAG could be used.
It is REALLY too bad that some people are so impatient.
When it says "rooted forever", that does NOT mean that the process has completed. It means that the process has ONLY STARTED. Give it some time.
WAIT.
Wait 20 minutes.
It will complete.
Be patient.
If you have to, pull out the battery from the thing.
Then put in the special sdcard.
Plug the battery back in, plug the charge plug in.
Turn on.
WALK AWAY AND COME BACK TOMORROW.
Sorry, but I wouldn't call myself impatient. I pre-charged my nook to full charge before attempting rooting. I left the Nook alone without restarting it until I realized it may need charging again. It was THEN that I tried to restart it.
"WALK AWAY AND COME BACK TOMORROW" <- Yeah, I did that.
However, I do admit, I was expecting a quicker root/rom flash I'm used to my Samsung Vibrant

How do you know it's not turning on?
Thread moved. Development goes in the development section, questions in the general section. Thanks.
okay, fast forward a few months forward. I did figure out that the nook DOES turn on but it's probably stuck on an infinite loop. I was successful in booting several different "recoveries". There was a tool a few months back that removed root. The "recovery" booted but didn't help.
Since then I tried the new CWR and it booted! I was so excited. I did the whole "factory reset" and deleted all of the caches. Didn't help, the screen still showed "Rooted Forever". I tried to use the "Touch Formatter", unfortunately, that didn't help either. I used the TouchNooter again but again, nothing happened.
Any suggestions? I haven't seen a "stock" image or anything like that to boot into anywhere.
If your partitions are still intact and you haven't overwritten your rom-partition by writing a touchnooter or cwm img-file directly to the nook you could try the following:
-Create a sd-card with cwm,
-download nook_1_1_update_cwm.zip from http://code.google.com/p/nst-recovery/downloads/list and copy it to the sd
-boot into cwm
-use the install zip from sd-card function to apply the update.
The nook_1_1_update_cwm.zip contains the original update to 1.1, it is just repacked to be usable with cwm. That means, if you want root, you have to root afterwards.
The nook_1_1_update.zip that you get directly from Barnes & Noble is a standard zip file with with a signature attached to the beginning. You can strip off the first 0x1A8 (424) bytes and open it with any unzipper.

The Nook boots into a "Read Forever" with a "starting up" thing on the bottom (basically the way stock looks) instead of "Rooted Forever" but it seems like it's in a bootloop, stays on the same screen and never progresses. I'm going to try the n2T to trigger a factory reset. Hopefully, that'll work :/
n2t did not work. Not sure what to do next.

[Q] Stuck Rooted Forever..and ever

Hi there, I've done a fair amount of searching and have read up and down similar posts but haven't been able to get to a resolution.
I have an NST fw 1.2, I initially tried using noogie to root it, but i made a backup image of my device using dd before i started messing with it. upon having problems with adb i switched gears. at that point it was still booting up into normal nook homescreen and all functional. later i attempted touchnooter 2.1.31 but couldn't make it past the install screens (eg, step 1 wait for the black screen flash, then reboot never got me any progress). after multiple times rebooting i was able to attempt a factory reset, but it never completed. at this point it wouldn't respond to any combination of key holds/reboot sequences and was not recognized via usb by my ubuntu machine. currently with noogie on a sd card inserted in the nook, i can hold the power button and the screen will flash but never does anything other than show the 'rooted forever' screen. in this mode with the usb attached, i can see the 7 partitions (factory, cache, userdata, rom, nook, boot, and a 302 MB fs). so i feel like it's not totally dead (right?)
so i'm thinking, gosh i'd like to restore that backup image, or attempt another factory reset.. what would you do?

Remove the sdcard!
If you reboot the nook with the noogie sdcard, then it will return to the Rooted Forever screen.
Remove the sdcard, then press and hold the power button for a few seconds, repeat a few times. It takes a fair bit of effort but will restart.
The power button is the button at the rear of the nook, not the 'n' button on the front of the nook.

I would ...leave in the noogie sdcard
restore your backup

then remove the noogie sdcard, reboot, and check that the nook still works.
Since you have NST fw 1.2 you will need to root with Tinynoot.
Tinynoot for US Nook 1.2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650593
I didn't find any other rooting method that works for the US Nook 1.2
Tinynoot only has a few basic apps, ADB wireless, Button Savior, NookColorTools.
It has no google apps, and no access to google / android market.
You will need to use ADB to install apps.
If you have a UK Nook 1.2, then Tinynoot works, and there is Alpha TFU

thanks for the info, restoring from my backup image worked..
i used dd and got back to original and everything worked fine
Code:
dd if=my_backup.img of=/dev/sdb bs=1M
i checked out the TinyNoot info in the link you provided and was able to perform that root with no problems on my 1.2 firmware
Glad to hear it!

Urgent help needed I bricked the unbrickable nook color

Summary:
I bricked my sister's Nook Color. She bought it refurbished at a pawn shop for cheap and everything was working until I told my sister that I could root the nook and put an android rom on it. My biggest mistake ever.
I looked at a lot of forums relating to the problem and it seems like there isn't a fix. So basically I got to the point of having CWM working.
All was going so well and I decided to flash eyeballer's cm-9-encore-20120904-0700-unofficial.zip on it. The one on Goo.im. After looking at screenshots of CM9 I was impressed.
I did the factory reset on it and wipe the cache, I flashed the CM9 and it was installing and it seem that it was taking a long time and then the nook turned off.
The biggest mistake that I made was that I formatted the boot , I'm a noob, I figured I wasn't the only one so I came across a thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=949699
I thought that CM9 got installed and when I went to turn it on, nothing whatsoever... It doesn't boot no more.
I tried putting the 1gb bootable CWM on a 1gb sd card with Win32 Disk Imager and the Nook didn't boot from the SD card either and I also did the same with an 8gb.
When I go connect the Nook on the computer it searches for a driver called Omap3630 but it doesn't install and it seems to disconnect itself.
I am was looking for more threads and found out that I'm in a similar situation as a user called Jiv_au here,

3rd post. I also tried what he did with the 8 boot attempts, pressing power button for 60 seconds and pressing the power on, the N and the volumes.

The problem is that you formatted boot, and CM does not include all of the needed boot files if you formatted boot. You will need to flash the stock firmware back onto the device, and then you can proceed to flash whatever ROM you want on the device, LINK.
I am not sure what version bootable CWM you are using, but download and flash this one,LINK. Since you saw the Omap3630 driver prompt, it does mean that it still is alive and attempting to go through the booting process. As for getting it to boot from this card, you will not get any visual indication that the device is on or not, the screen will stay dark if it’s on or off. Since the device might have been on this whole time I recommend that you fully charge the device before proceeding forward. With no USB cable connected to the device, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, then insert the SD card, then press and hold the power button for 5 seconds to turn it on. It should boot into the CWM recovery, if it does not press the power button for 30 seconds and try again. It might take a couple attempts, but you should be able to get it. Once you get the device to boot, wipe data/cache, and flash the stock image, and reboot the device. Once you have a working device, you can then boot into the CWM card, and flash the ROM that you want.

You gave me a bit of hope but its not booting. The nook is dead... thanks for the help.
edit: I heard that pressing Power + N is like forcing a shut down so I hold those for 30 seconds and then put the SD card in it No boot.
I tried it again and put the Sd card in it and then press the power button still nothing. I believe this is definitely dead. I wish she had bought it at the B&N store. I think I'm getting her a Nook tablet. I owe it to her.
