Hi,
Ever since I've had the SGS the GPS has never worked (Well known SGS issue).
I have installed a custom ICS GS ROM, and this has not made any difference (Except ICS is sweet!).
You have any tips on getting the GPS to work?
Cheers
Andy

Can u write some more about it ?
I heard that Nexus has a great GPS but is it really possible to change some files and get the same quality on SGS ?
Isn't it a matter of hardware ?
Please write what files to write and where. Thanks.
Lukiqq did that in his rom, dunno how he did that. Other devs did that too

Here you find a tweak built on Nexus GPS-files.
http://code.google.com/p/captivate-gb-gps-tweaks/
Remember to make backup before applying, and READ how to adjust settings AFTER injecting Nexus files.
Similar package was made by user $omator and he named it GPS_GRK39C.ZIP
You may ask Google to find this.

Had no GPS with ICS (TWICS).
After using FasterFix (Market) it works fine.
Success
This may not help you at this point, but I finally have performance I thought I should have when bought this phone in 2010.
Updated to stock Froyo in 2011, then stock Gingerbread in 2012. But didn't get performance until doing factory reset to clear data and apps.
Gps locks in under 10 seconds typical instead of 100 or so.
Mode set to MS-based default. I changed to Standalone, and performance same, but need to play some more to know if this will always work well.
Everything is snappier than ever - great feeling.
I am having issues with gps too since i installed ICS rom i think.
I have find installed GPS AIDS, donate version, makes it quite better. Try it

I'm not sure if I'm the one to advise you, but I have just flashed my Optus unlocked tab with Roto JMI v1. Being a noob, I must say that the instructions given worked a treat and the flash went perfectly.
Although it is early days, iot seems pretty good to me with an improvement in wifi which was fairly random previously, but I still have some testing to do on the GPS. Others on the developers forum seem to have no problem though.

For me I like the Modaco Roms and Kernal. His roms are great on my other android stuff as well.

Wifi seems to be solved for me with JMIv1.0. No dropouts. For the GPS you might try the FasterFix from this topic. That works great for me.
I prefer the Roto-roms above those of Modaco. The Roto's are most a kind of 'out of the box' roms, and can be used without doing some really tweaking like the Modaco's. But just try them both and compare the difference, feels and looks.
I have tried both and they are great compared to stock rom. Below is my conclusion(solely on my experince of flashing roms for 1 month now.
Roto
- easy to flash
- good speed
- clean wipe with minimal add ons so we are free to add what we want
Modoco
- flash can be difficult and need to poke around and do some mistakes first
- blazing speed, getting constant 1800+ in quadrant
- got everything working good in my asian gsm tab
- auto connect/disconnect between wifi and data which is good
- love the reboot option on power button

I have tried the GPS fix, but no luck, and I think the Wifi issue is much more to do with my router than Roto's great work. I think I'll try JMEv4 as I jumped straight to JMI.
I appreciate your help.

Well, I didn't go back to JME, I tried JMI v2 which has just been released by Rotohammer.
The short answer. for me, is that everything went smooth again, and is working well except for the GPS which just refuses to work.

Hi, can you tell howto do the EXT4 kernel step of Modoco ROM? I failed to flash the kernel all the way.
My current ROM is Roto JMI. Should I flash other ROM first?
Thanks.

I love the Vibrant but the best ans is to get a different phone. ROMs can help but nothing truly fixes it.
I can only speak from my own experience. I have had three replacement Vibrants and tried all software and hardware fixes. Nothing has given a truly good GPS performance.
Might need to perform the hardware fix before your gps starts working consistantly.

This.
As soon as I performed the hardware fix ALL of my problems with GPS ended.
I never have to worry about getting a lock and keeping it anymore.

Try first the GPS fix of EDT. You might want to stick to software first before messing with the hardware.

My GPS works great with Heathens GPS fix.
11 birds in view. 10 in use. 5-15 seconds to lock on!
Well, my goal for the upcoming v2.0 of my aGPS Patch is to bring support to five more devices. This is one of the devices I selected!
I'm looking for some testers to see if the patch will effectively work.
It simply replaces gps.conf in /etc/ to be much better performing.
You can download v1.3 by clicking here.
To install, use Root Explorer or ES File Explorer to copy the new one over. Reboot. Give GPS a try! I recommend GPS Status. If your device uses ClockWork Recovery, you can simply flash the ZIP.
A reference thread can be seen at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250226.
Also, I'd love for someone to send me the gps.conf currently on their device.
Thank you for assisting me in the determination if this version works.
Better performance? You mean faster located or accuracy?
It is just the aGPS?

Yes, and stabilized results. Users who would lose signal while traveling or at higher speeds, this tends to keep the lock consistent and constant.
Also, if you would send me your /etc/gps.conf I would appreciate it. Custom ROM's tend to not do much in the way of making a crappy situation better, but I'm curious.
Thanks for your interest in assisting!
This is my gps.conf from GDX.
I will test it in later 2hours time, still in the office now.
and i have no problem on the old file, i can get the location with 20secs,(normally within 10secs) with my Papago Navigator in open air.But yes, my GPS device is NEVER turn off.
Just the information how i use the GPS.
* I saw your another post, is this patch only for North America?
I am from Malaysia.

No, this is worldwide. I did two versions but that ended and I am only offering worldwide patches now. So, should work no matter where you're at.
I simple tried the new gps.conf. I don't have any positive feedback for you nor the negative. I don't really feel any useful compare with the original one. Maybe 2secs faster, i am not sure.
But in conclusion, it can be used and no problem for a short test. I might give more opinion for a longer try.

At least we know it's compatible, then. It didn't kill your phone's GPS. Didn't think it would anyway. If you have time, play with it. If not, thank you for helping.

Hi all,
I know everyone is working really hard on the ICS source for the S2 but from what I've experienced so far its not worth moving on from 2.3.6. I know this is all testing/dev work and things aren't going to run to smoothly but I dont seem to be able to get a stable ROM that works for all the below, at least one of them doesnt work or crashes all the time (I seem to find I'm CWM backup'ing/restoring and titanium apps all the time and restoring ROMS instead of using the phone lol):
- USB utilities - crashes when trying to use it
- GPS doesnt work to well - even with the agps patch applied
- MMS/3G signal doesnt work
- Nova launcher on most crash
- Messaging stops working from the dock - so you have to clear the data to re apply launcher settings
- some other stuff I cant think of right now
If I can put a tick in the box for all of the above I would be a happy man til then I'm sticking to 2.3.6 ROM's (Not moaning, just thought I would put it out there and see what everyone elses thoughts are) :-D

Just realized what i said...Anyway so many threads out there already regarding ICS just post in there regarding making a new thread. You only get people coming down your thread just cause you opened a new thread on a topic that is already kinda getting boring with all the crap everyday you read on here and people opening so many threads when you could just post in the ones that are already created..
thats what you get when you use a beta version. post the same in existing threads, and do read before posting another thread.
I was actually not going for.ics myself due to what I was reading... but couldn't resist anymore and have been on Darkys (Ficeto) LPB for 2 days now... I'm actually quite happy and surprised by the performance and ESP battery life... probably not.going to switch back to the bread...!

I agree. I have been trying about 5 versions of custom roms with ICS which all users would say are very good but I was very disappointed in performance, and sometimes it would freeze.
ICS.....not yet released!
Be patient now.
U guys need to do a full wipe even if the ROM says no wipe. Otherwise you will definitely get issues. I was having some before I did a full wipe. After the Wipe did a fresh install of a Custom ROM and now its awesome. Definitely can't go back to GB now

I shouldnt do this cause my mates friends uncle will kill me but.
Ive got hold of a fully working release of ics that samsung will roll out the only reason they arnt is cause they are waiting to time it for the sgs 3 release, they want to encourage people to upgrade to that and then once thats sold well will offer this upgrade for the sgs2.
There have however been reports of phones being bricked due to a time stamp in the kernel stopping the kernel from running before a given date.
So I repeat this ROM will brick your phone

guess what there is no official ics, and what you use are simply nexus s files (tuned/made by google) so that is why it works better
same on gb - using nexuss files made gps working slightly better
