I love the Vibrant but the best ans is to get a different phone. ROMs can help but nothing truly fixes it.
I can only speak from my own experience. I have had three replacement Vibrants and tried all software and hardware fixes. Nothing has given a truly good GPS performance.
Might need to perform the hardware fix before your gps starts working consistantly.

This.
As soon as I performed the hardware fix ALL of my problems with GPS ended.
I never have to worry about getting a lock and keeping it anymore.

how can do that? perform Hardware?
Try first the GPS fix of EDT. You might want to stick to software first before messing with the hardware.

I have done it on my JH2 rom. Seems to be locking on marginally faster, but I haven't tested it with tracking yet, and probably won't be able to until tonight. The track that I saw using it did look better, but who knows if it will be that way for everybody.
Have you noticed any issues related to the change, ie worse call performance/quality, etc. as reported on some of the other posts regarding this issue and possible fixes?
There is a thread on this allready posted in general.
Is there mod who can merge these two so propel wont have to watch both threads and all reports are in one?

I would merge the threads but the fixes are not the same. This fix is can be flashed in recovery. I would use this fix if you are running I9000 rom. I read in the original thread that there my be some differences in locations of the files for the captivate and vibrant so the fix may not put every thing in the right location. They are working on versions for captivate and vibrant. I loaded stock I9000 jm5 rom and applied the fix. It helped with accuracy but there is still lag.
Edit: It may be that just the vibrant is different.
Case_ said:
Now this is interesting. Trying to make that revert package for Vibrant...and the ROM is entirely different GPS-wise from I9000 and Captivate ROMs! There's no /system/bin/gpsd folder, there's no /system/etc/jupiter.xml and there's no /system/lib/libgps.so...
I wonder why...

That is unfortunate. It seems to be helping me on JH2. I've changed my settings back to Standalone instead of MS based and I'm still locking onto as many satellites as I was before. Still not sure if it is holding a lock, but it is giving me 5 meter accuracy from inside my apartment. I'm hoping that the standalone mode does better at tracking than ms based.

Samsung USA has tweeted the Market availability of GPSSamsungRestore, a GPS optimization app. Tweets have indicated that it is for the Vibrant and Captivate:
http://twitter.com/samsungtweets
maybe , some one using AT&T can help and upload the apk maybe ?
Hmmmm... I assume that it is only on the market in the USA because I searched for it under the names GPSSamsungRestore, GPS Samsung Restore, GPS Restore, etc. and I cannot find it on the market here in Canada.
I am assuming that us poor Canadians will not see this app anytime soon but I have posted a question on the Samsung Mobile Canada facebook page and I will see if they answer it. I doubt it though cause they NEVER answer ANYTHING!!!
Sure would be nice if this is the "fix" weve been waiting for...

Right so I think what this app is for is to reset the gps so it works and then as time passes and it gets bad again you run the app again to start from scratch so it works again... Lather, rinse, repeat...

Exactly. Samsung have probably been receiving complaints by many people who are gps "experts", so they wanted to provide support with an easy approach for dealing with them.
I wouldn't expect new drivers are anything like that, I'd simply expect it to reset the GPS setting file.

Is Samsung was receiving complaints from GPS "experts" then dont you think that these "experts" would have already stated "definitively" that the GPS cannot be fixed?
And if Samsung had been dealing with GPS "experts" then why would they release a software that would IMMEDIATELY be squashed by these same GPS "experts"?
I would like to think that Samsung may be finally listening to us all complaining and that this could even be just step 1 in the right direction to a useable GPS on this device. Wishful thinking I know but I sure hope so...

Has anyone tried using the new EVO GPS Drivers? I'm curious is this will help us out at all. Its supposed to work with all AOSP roms I'm pretty sure. I just flshed it and will try it out later.

I think the better question is does the EVO and the Shift have the same GPS chip. Remember for the most part they're different phones.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
I actually flashed them on to my shift without knowing and they worked great. Got 9/9 satellites in GPS status in less than 30 seconds, but now my GPS is acting wonky, really hard to get a lock and lucky if I get 1 satellite. It would be really nice if we could get a developer to port those drivers to speedy.
what tells you that that driver is better than the one the shift already have?
evo and the shift are the same in name only.

Our GPS like many Android phones are not pure GPS units and are actually Assisted GPS (AGPS). Rough location is first acquired from the network tower's or WiFi address's geo-location while the GPS attempts to get a satellite lock for a more refined location lock. This network dependence is why you can almost always get a fast lock on your phone and not on dedicated GPS units.
Well i had not openen maps or anything since my last flash and with no network on and no wifi on my gps still found me within 3 meters

Because it turns off the Network Assist and forces your phone to get a true GPS lock instead of just timing out. Network Assist is needed for when you can't get a location lock or to speed up the process. As far as Google Maps is concerned a rough location is better then no location when a narrow location GPS lock is taking a long time to acquire.

Well, my goal for the upcoming v2.0 of my aGPS Patch is to bring support to five more devices. This is one of the devices I selected!
I'm looking for some testers to see if the patch will effectively work.
It simply replaces gps.conf in /etc/ to be much better performing.
You can download v1.3 by clicking here.
To install, use Root Explorer or ES File Explorer to copy the new one over. Reboot. Give GPS a try! I recommend GPS Status. If your device uses ClockWork Recovery, you can simply flash the ZIP.
A reference thread can be seen at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250226.
Also, I'd love for someone to send me the gps.conf currently on their device.
Thank you for assisting me in the determination if this version works.
Better performance? You mean faster located or accuracy?
It is just the aGPS?

Yes, and stabilized results. Users who would lose signal while traveling or at higher speeds, this tends to keep the lock consistent and constant.
Also, if you would send me your /etc/gps.conf I would appreciate it. Custom ROM's tend to not do much in the way of making a crappy situation better, but I'm curious.
Thanks for your interest in assisting!
This is my gps.conf from GDX.
I will test it in later 2hours time, still in the office now.
and i have no problem on the old file, i can get the location with 20secs,(normally within 10secs) with my Papago Navigator in open air.But yes, my GPS device is NEVER turn off.
Just the information how i use the GPS.
* I saw your another post, is this patch only for North America?
I am from Malaysia.

No, this is worldwide. I did two versions but that ended and I am only offering worldwide patches now. So, should work no matter where you're at.
I simple tried the new gps.conf. I don't have any positive feedback for you nor the negative. I don't really feel any useful compare with the original one. Maybe 2secs faster, i am not sure.
But in conclusion, it can be used and no problem for a short test. I might give more opinion for a longer try.

Can u write some more about it ?
I heard that Nexus has a great GPS but is it really possible to change some files and get the same quality on SGS ?
Isn't it a matter of hardware ?
Please write what files to write and where. Thanks.

Remember to make backup before applying, and READ how to adjust settings AFTER injecting Nexus files.
Similar package was made by user $omator and he named it GPS_GRK39C.ZIP
You may ask Google to find this.

Had no GPS with ICS (TWICS).
After using FasterFix (Market) it works fine.

This may not help you at this point, but I finally have performance I thought I should have when bought this phone in 2010.
Updated to stock Froyo in 2011, then stock Gingerbread in 2012. But didn't get performance until doing factory reset to clear data and apps.
Gps locks in under 10 seconds typical instead of 100 or so.
Mode set to MS-based default. I changed to Standalone, and performance same, but need to play some more to know if this will always work well.
Everything is snappier than ever - great feeling.
I am having issues with gps too since i installed ICS rom i think.
I have find installed GPS AIDS, donate version, makes it quite better. Try it
