New phone! - Wildfire General

Well ladys and gentlemen the time has come. My brand new HTC sensationXE arrived today so my little wildfire will be moving into retirement this has been such a great forum to me through all the noob moments, teaching me all I now know and forever cementing my love for android! Although i won't be leaving this forum ( don't think I could) most of my time will be over at the sensation forums. Just wanted to say a special thanks to scratch and slymobi for their help with the sim lock thread, Arco for the cm7 Rom, the misses for the best valentines preset ever and of course everyone else who committed to this forum! Rock on! Heavy metal man

3 reasons ive been put off htc one.
1: Bootloader unlocked by htcdev? Dunno if there's an alternative yet, i haven't looked so there might be but if there isn't its definitely a no for me. I want full s-off not just a little bit of it.
2: No sd card, yes i know music and pictures load faster on internal memory but i want the choice of where i want to put things and the ability to expand when i fill it with all my failed mods!
3: Not able to remove the battery? Well thats just a silly idea unless the battery will last forever with seriously heavy usage, bare in mind i most days struggle to get 5 hours from my wildfire and have to take a spare battery everywhere.
Other than that the screen looks sh*thot but sadly not for me.........

1) well, i only modded wildfire because it was slow by default. i persume, a 1.5 dual core snapdragon s4 will do the trick. sp, maybe i wont even root it. if i do its gonna be when my warranty expires because im paying the full price for it.
2) i manage with 2gb sd card on my wildfire which is still half empty, i even have 512 mb ext... so thats about 1.2-1.3 gb pf usable space (you know memory is smaller than whats stated 2 gb ~ 1,8 gb) so thatll be fine, im not a smartphone gamer either so one memory hog less (im more of a playstation kinda guy)
3. battery can always be managed, i use my wildfire pretty much all the time on my almost 2 year old battery and i get day, day and a half of battery life, more when i use it less .
all in all, looks like one s is the one ive been waiting for

Perfect for you then, it really is an awesome phone, i managed to get my hands on one the other day for half hour, the screen looks amazing and its lightning fast after using a buzz for so long but for those reasons above i can't get one and am thinking/dreaming of an s3 if they'll give me one!

If you are looking for Proper Unlocked bootloaders and Dev Support, Samsung is not much better off from what I have seen so far. Apparently, everything is "hacky and dirty". There is no proper recovery partition, so even a CWM recovery has to be integrated into the kernel. You cant flash a recovery by itself. Also, no things like Fastboot. You have to depend on Samsung softwares like Odin.
Also, Samsung's coding is terrible from what the dev's have been saying. They use unstandardized coding techniques, and its a pain to reproduce the same features on AOSP / Other ROMs. The Galaxy S2 did not get a build of AOSP ICS till a leaked official GS2 ROM was out.
I agree on Point 2 and 3 though. They are great exit tools for when you mess up your phone. Think about it, when you experience a bootloop, what is the 1st thing that comes on your mind? A battery pull, obviously.
BTW, Dump the S3 and get the S2. With the price drop after the S3 was announced, this phone is now terrific VFM. Still nothing that can't be run on this device.

You are kidding, right?
J/k, anyway, excellent choice. I prefer the One S myself over the One X.

Thanks for the info 3, i hadn't really read much about Samsung coding either to tell the truth just saw the amount of dev support you guys have over there and presumed it must be slightly better, I know i'd probably love an sgs 2 coming from here but if the 3 ends up with as much support for it do i really want to be stuck in a 2 year contract and miss out on all the fun with a 2 knowing there's a 3 out there, just out of reach.
Decisions decisions............... Still my carrier might not give me one though so may be forced into a sgs2.

so far.
well ive had the phone for a few days and i have to say im loving it
the screen is sexy and silky smooth, and not to mention big enough ^^ from opening it it took me 7 minutes to s-off with revolutionary ive gotta say touch recoverys rock!!! they are themeable and everything, 4ext for the win lol
i have made the jump to ics in the form of the android revolution HD rom by mike1986 im missing the boot into recovery option from the the power off menu, but im hoping to find a work around for that being able to unlock with my face alone is epic and the download speeds im getting from giffgaff is very nice.
im very very pleased with this device atm and i would highly recommend it. and if **** hits the fan, you can always battery pull!

Good luck with your new phone
IMO the GS3 is terrible. All the fancy software is useless because I'll put CM9 on it as Touchwiz is absolutely disgusting. Their coding is terrible as 3xeno said and the UI is worse than Cupcake. The specs are mediocre, the AT&T One X's S4 chipset is better IMO. The screen is also mediocre, they made it 0.8 of an inch bigger than the One X to show off. And the rumours were so off, especially the 1080p screen. The nature lockscreen is a cool idea but the ripple effect is just too much time, especially when you just want to unlock the phone quickly and make a call.

thanks, and yeah, me too, i had the option of one x but i think 900€ is a bit too much as im buying off contract.

My contract ends next year, who knows what phone I'll want :/, s3 is ok, i love using odin, touchwiz idc about it. Htc and sense just annoys me lol. Maybe I'll wait for the next nexus.

Good Luck with u're new Sensation XE ! It's a brilliant phone..

Thinking about the DHD

Hey guys. I'm just wondering if you guys would recommend stock DHD for a user? I have been reading the forums for a while and most everybody has rooted and changed roms and radios. I don't know if I would be comfortable with it at first. Would you guys still recommend the DHD to a person who wouldn't root it or hack it? I'm sick of my icrap. I don't want to invalidate the warranty. But I want a good machine from the start.
Opinions?

from what i can say, with or without custom rom, the dhd is a top device and fast enough
the rooting, custom rom and radio thing is just for people who want to get the maximum out of the device
its stock still a very good device

Well if u aint gona root it and install homebrew then buddy i am suggesting HTC SENSTATION 100% .... its gona be released mid may or 1st june... its a much better cell phone... i am getting it myself
I got my DHD for about a week now and rooted it the day after I got it and actually the only reason at that moment for me to do so was because I got a lot of stock apps and trials (seriously.. Don't put 2 minute trials in it!), but I played around all day and all night with it and although my custom rom is better than stock, it's still a great phone!
But as Leather|Face already mentioned, there is a new wave of HTC phones coming out pretty soon which are better, so you might want to wait if you have the patience
The DHD is the best HTC device at the moment and although there is the sensation around the corner something better is always on the horizon. Even stock it's a great device.
Haven't touched my DHD after a month, , it is unlocked and unbranded, the only reason I'll probably mess with it is to get rid of all the social networking crud and other software I don't want, that's built into it.
Seems pretty good stock to me.
Hey guys ... i've done a lot of reading and still scared as hell to root and flash homebrewed rom on my DHD since i've never done that b4... i've found a LOT of instructions and guidelines on "how to" ... but still i'd ask if any1 of you expirienced rooters would take a moment and post or PM me a really really detailed guide on how to root and flash custom rom such as CM7 with 2.3.3 and links to all thw tools i need. I've had desire and now dhd, but never rooted a phone. I would appreciate if any1 could do this favour. I'm a noob, but still, none of us were born with all sorts of abillities, and we gotta learn it somehow ...
Thx.

The guides around are top notch and pretty much noob proof, you'd really have to 'try' and brick your device. If you need even more depth instructions I'm going to venture out there and say maybe rooting isn't for you. I had no idea about anything, did reading in the morning and was flashing kernels by night. Just follow the instructions!
I do have the patience. I'll wait for the sensation that's coming out first on Vodafone . Another month with i****. Oh well xD. I bet though the reviews will point out some major flaws. I've been reading about the lg optimus 2x and it has a lot of flaws. Same with the se arc. I also considered those two. This htc model has the least amount of complaints as far as I can see. but I'll wait another month. thanks guys.

In your situation I'd probably do the same. As someone else said, there's always something "better" coming along but, in this case, it's nearly here so you may as well wait a few weeks.
Regarding the OP though, my DHD was acquired last October unbranded and unlocked, but I haven't rooted it. Just set it up as I want it and installed the apps that made my life easier. It'd be nice to be able to zap the apps. I don't want (the unsociable networking apps have been mentioned above ... ) but set them to 'not sync' and they may as well not be there anyway (as I don't have a faceplant or twatter account they couldn't sync anyway ).
Enjoy the new phone!

Rooted or unrooted desire HD is too awesome. The only reason I rooted was because I got bored . However I would definitely recommend rooting to get the most out of your phone.
Like other people are saying, maybe it might be better if you hold of for the sensation if you want a stock phone.
I'd wait for the HTC Sensation because i've too much problems with my DHD.
Misaligned parts, blurry camera, crappy sound through speaker and headphones.
But despite my problems the DHD also has A LOT of great things: great Speed, LOTS of RAM, huge ROM, a really great display (I prefer the LCD of the DHD over the AMOLED of the Desire).
I brought my DHD at Feb. I didn't do anything to it (util the end of March).
But I'm still very satisfy with it's performance.
Maybe Sensation will have better performance due on better hardware....
For DHD, I still think it a phone with great C/P.
I was afraid to root my DHD at the very first.
But I found out that's actually very easy by fallowing the instruction on this forum.
Now I'm flashing different ROMs and apps into my phone and trying different tricks mentioned by other friends.
You will love it, once you root it ~~~ XD

I think you really have to try hard to brick the phone, as long as you can follow simple instructions then you will be fine .
There are tonnes of guides/videos/faqs littered all over the internet on how to root the DHD. There really is no reason to be scared of doing it. I would also reccomend doing it sooner rather then later, as then you don't have to worry about backing up what you have already put on your phone.
Contradicting what others have said above me, I actually don't like the DHD as stock. Sense seems to me to be very shiny and pretty, but it's slow(ish) and filled with rubbish I didn't want. I flashed CM7 when it came out a few weeks back, and haven't looked back since. It just feels so much more responsive, and it's nice to have the latest version of Android (2.3.3), which we are still waiting to see from HTC.
I would strongly recommend the Desire HD, as I think it really is one of the best phones on the market, but I also recommend rooting and putting a different ROM on it too.

New Desire HD

Hi guys
Im looking to get myself a desire hd. Can anyone please share their experiences and whether I should get one?
Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk
I'd recommend one. But, and a slight but, HTC are very near to releasing the HTC Sensation. If I were in your shoes, I'd wait for that.
Yes it is an excellent phone.. but as the poster above said the HTC Sensation will be released shortly - even if you don't want that phone (I wouldn't know why you wouldn't other than price) wait for it to come out so DHD becomes cheaper
Thats the thing I can get the DHD for 200 bucks offline. I wont be able to afford the sensation. Overall how would you guys rate it out of 10?
Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk
Around 8.3/10
I love my Desire HD.. personally I would rate it 9/10
Great phone.. battery can be a bit of a let down though depending on how you use your phone, but if you root it and install a custom rom you can easily squeeze more juice out of it (currently getting 2 1/2 days with medium use) and it's not so much of a problem.
How easy is it to install a custom rom and how easy is it to brick? sorry for so many questions but I just wanna make sure im making the right choice.

it's very easy to root and install a custom rom.. check out the guides in the Desire HD Android Development section and you'll find all the info you need in the stickys (sorry can't post a link )...
as for bricking it is near impossible.. if you read through the guides before you start and try to understand them, then you will have no problem at all, and if you get stuck ask someone here and I'm sure they'd be able to help you out
Simply a great phone. Rooting and installing ROMs is piss easy, at first all the info may be overwhelming but once you understand what to do and do it you will see its difficulty is more like 2/10.
$200 for a DHD is a steal, well here in NZ anyway.
-Bad things-
720p Video Recording can drop fps when recording in low light conditions
Video Recording sound quality is crap (8kHz, mono)
Screen is a normal TFT type LCD (viewing angle could be better)
WiFi signal can be weak if you have your hand over the antenna which is behind the battery cover and a case
Speaker is average
But despite all those bad things this phone still rocks, I won't be upgrading for a long time.
Thanks guys im going to get it on tuesday hopefully and I cant wait. Do you guys reckon its a good upgrade from the x10i as I love this phone

I've used the X10i too, the DHD is so much smoother and the Sense UI is so much better than Sony Ericssons.
Really happy with my DHD, except for the speaker. I used to listen to music/podcast through the speaker on my previous mobile (while in the kitchen, at work...), and unfortunately DHD is NOT good enough for that purpose. If you are on custom 2.3.3 rom (no official update from HTC yet), then you can slightly help the matter using Volume+. Other then that, just loving my phone.

Had an x10 before and those things are not even in the same league as the desire hd. The software is just so much better on these phones and battery life is better despite the larger battery of the x10.

That is great. You guts are making me even more excited lol. Now just another quick question. Once again I apologise for the amount of queries just like my research before hand. Can someone recommend say the most stable rom available with good battery life? Even though I might just stick to stock and root and optimise it. If obviously there are any optimisations for it such as the ones for the x10. Reason being im scared I will brick the DHD and I heard if you brick any phone its not possible to restore it. Which is what I like about the x10. Ive flashed it so many times.
Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk
Cyanogen 7.1 most likely be available when you receive your DHD. And that is a great ROM.
Don't worry about bricking your handset, It's very hard to do unintentionally.

Vibrant to MT4G Worth It????

I currently have a sanding vibrant and was looking to pick up a mytouch however I wanted to ask you guys first to see if it was worth it. I've read through the general and q&a sections and have seen posts about bad screens and bad chips which made me doubt getting it. So yea what do you guys think should I get it or not
P.S. the sensation is out of the question right now as I don't have the money to buy it and need a phone to replace my vibrant
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yes, it is deff worth it! The things about the bad screen and chips were only for the first batch of mytouch's that were made, so I doubt u will get a bad screen at this time. But it is a great phone, and once again, totally worth it! Especially if u plan to root it
Sent from my HTC Beast!
Well just make sure you have a good one, and if you do then this is a wonderful phone. Greatly underrated IMO.
But of course there is a "but." And that's the quality control, which sucks ass. That's why you see so many threads regarding bad screens, bad eMMC chips, off centered FFC, creaks at buttons light leakage you name it.
But like I said, if you find that good one then this is an awesome phone.

This isn't true I know people who recently got theirs and have the bad screen and chip,i got mines and may and have a good screen, but bad chip...Htc is using both chips still. Even replacement phones can have either once.if you ask me I feel you should save your money for something more recent instead, wait for next year or at least till ice cream sandwich is released, you wans get the best for your money right? The vibrant is very good and should hold you off for something better, I like my mt4g, but it's a minir upgrade for you. Both phones are pretty equal in specs, some downgrades and upgrades...mytouch has the dragon why sammy has the hummingbird, dragon has lower power, but sammy has the power vr 540 or 535 thats better for 3d apps. And it has more internal space, but crappy camera and bad plastic. Mytouch has 4g and vibrant 3g I belive, so the choice is up to you.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I bought mine a week after launch and I got a good screen and good eMMC, and there have been a lot of people who recently purchased it new from T-Mobile who are still reporting bad components. It seems to be related more to the country of manufacture (China vs Taiwan I think it was).
I bought mine last Nov in FL, good screen and chip. My brother bought his in March in NY Good screen and chip. His GF got hers in NY in April, again good screen and chip. She did need a replacement shipped from somewhere again good screen and chip. So it really is luck of the draw. I suddenly feel like playing lotto.
Well Ill probably get one this week but ill definitely be on the lookout for bad chips and screen

Goodbye!

Today is a sad day for me, I no longer own an HTC Legend. I've moved on to a Galaxy S II, so if you own one of those you'll probably see me around there before long.
If one's thanks meter is a measure of their "success" on XDA, then I owe 80% of mine to the Legend community. You guys are awesome. I've learnt everything I know about Android through owning the Legend, and through the guys that are part of this small community.
I'm not gonna milk this any more than I already have, so farewell Legend!
All my projects for this device are officially ending, as I don't own a device that I can test it on.
Good luck furthering your Android career! Your projects around this bend were ones I greatly appreciated, but everyone's time must come for this device.
Have fun with the SGSII!

Yeah, I was tempted to wait it out, but the lack of a functional USB port on my phone was killing me. Lol
Edit: in the unlikely event that someone has a legend they don't want...

I myself moved back to the Legend after a time with a Desire S and Xperia mini pro. I still like the display and the size of the Legend and of course the finish. And with CM7.1 it feels quite modern
Good luck over at the SGS!

Farwell, thank you for all your work here
It seems that we both switched devices the same day i got my hands on a almost brand new Nexus S and its awesome
But I will also miss my old legend
Goodbye! Thank you for all your contributions to the Legend Subforum
I can really understand you that you leave us because of the broken USB of your Legend.
I am also thinking about getting a new Phone, but I'm a student and my car also eats a lot of money And right now my Legend has only a few scratches, the Battery "backholding door" is a bit broken (one hinge is missing there, broke because it fell down from my desk) and the Flashlight LED is broken for some reason i don't know.
And it really sucks that i've got no S-OFF anymore...
Another reason for buying a new phone is that i noticed that my legend is really slow, even compared to my Girlfriends Galaxy Ace...
Tnx for everything.

Yes, thanks Grammerfreak, we are gonna miss your contributions.
How come you chose the galaxy s2 over the galaxy nexus with ics? I'm looking at upgrading my legend to these, or to the HTC evo or motorola razr. Thoughts?

Cost and time basically. They cost too much, and they're too difficult to find. I'd rather have a nexus, but the galaxy s2 is a good phone too. If my legend wasn't broken I'd have waited it out, but a broken phone forced my hand. I wouldn't get a Motorola because they're such a pain to hack, and I have no experience with the evo. The general impression I get is that it's pretty decent, but don't take my word on it.

Ah fair enough, I think I'm gonna wait it out a bit longer, see what the S3 is like and what else comes out in the next few months as my contract runs out. Ah fair enough, I'll pass on the Moto I think. Wait and see I guess. How's the S2?

I really like it. It's quite surprising how much faster than the Legend it is actually. I never felt that my Legend was particularly slow, so it was a bit of a shock. Lol
My situation was a bit unfortunate, and if my Legend was still working I'd have waited it out too. But hey, such is life. Development on the S2 is pretty active, so hopefully I'll be happy with it for a while. I miss my Legend though, the S2 forums are almost too active -_-
Just wanted to say that I'm done with the Legend to. Was/Is a great phone but time flies.
Thanks for all the knowledge I've gained from this forum and I'm hoping to see you guys in some other threads.

I must say, I have been burned by Samsung with the OG Epic (got it for my wife, and EASILY my worst decision, technology-wise), and I vowed never to return. However, Evo LTE vs SG3 is a very debatable decision.

Ha, I have to side with alaman, sammy baby. Though yes, they are fairly comparable; at that point its personal build choice and brand at that point.

"Personal build choice" is my real decision maker. I really, REALLY like Sense, and Sense 4 is a great improvement. Whenever I upgrade, I will definitely be monitoring my 14 day swap period from Sprint.
I'll keep on reading different posts for different opinions from the developer's point of view. Every one that I know who actually have a SG3 only tell me that "It is nice. I like it."
Seriously...not very helpful.

Honestly I hate flashing on the sg2 only for the sole fact that I don't do it when I'm out of the house because I'm worried I will forget what recovery kernel combo I'm using and emmc brick it, its not as nice to flash on as the evo. But the better screen and dual core processor are what make it great. Its a multimedia power house for me.
My second sg2 arrives tomorrow but I'm still going to rock my og till it dies for good.

So your saying its hard to flash the SG 2?I love my OG,dont get me wrong, this is the best phone i've used by a long shot and i love the wide variety of roms/kernels and mods and its easy to develope on.
And a second question...must you flash different modems according to the rom, just like the Samsung Epic? In my experience with the Epic, modems and recovery images must be flashed using Odin, which means I need a computer. Very annoying, especially when a new rom is acting up, and I'm not at home to use my computer.

So your saying i cant wipe everything and reinstall a nandroid??Unless i'm at home near a computer??If thats the case, then ill stick with my OG.
Unless your using a kernel and recovery from source, its best to Odin to flash just so your safe. I have mixed feelings about Odin. But no don't have to flash a modem, most roms I see come with one.
Its not hard to flash, Odin does some of it for you. You just have to watch what your flashing, if your on a leaked recovery/kernel and you wipe data it factory reset then you can brick your phone. Its mainly going from ics to gb or a different ics. I know they just got a official ics ota a few months back which helps.

Don't get me wrong...Odin makes life very easy. I easily flashed a custom recovery with no preparations at all. However, I NEED a computer. That's my biggest issue. I know that there is a mobile Odin, but the Epic is my wife's phone, and mobile Odin doesn't help if the phone goes bonkers on her.

My wife has the E4GT. I rooted it a couple of weeks ago in about fifteen minutes time. However, you pretty much have to use Odin (or Mobile Odin, which is a paid app from the Play Store) for flashing, etc, and Odin, to me at least, is pretty foreign, having used nothing but HTC devices for nearly three years now. One thing I do like about Samsung is not having to deal with S-on or S-off. The SGS II is a nice phone with lots of potential, though. The screen is bigger and better than the OG, and it's running a 1.2 Ghz dual-core versus the OG's 1 Ghz single-core. The SGS II doesn't come with a SD card but the slot is there should you desire to use a SD card. The camera is also better, as well. Like everything else, though, it all boils down to personal preference.

Ok, so here's a question for everyone. I don't want to litter the forum with yet ANOTHER thread about your options.
I want to upgrade my phone, and I am deciding between an EVO LTE or SG3.
However, my funds are a bit tight...so should I settle for the SG2 or the Galaxy Nexus?

Probably if you wait until after the Nov releases, and Thanksgiving you'll probably get one of your first two choices on the cheap/some sort of sale, no??
Yes, that's true. I think that I'll probably wait for the end of next month.

^ Patience is a virtue my brother. It's just like me I was about to buy the SG3 last month then suddenly I change my mind and I told my self I'm going to stick to my OG for awhile then here right now the SGN2 / N7100 was released which might be my next phone. But I will never leave my OG. It's like a part of my body!
sorry for the OT. Here's my answer though : Well if you have the money to get an SG2 well go for it the other people explain it why. :good:
Sprint just offered me an SG 2 or Nexus for free for an additional line or 2 year agreement, lol.
