Thinking about the DHD - Desire HD General

Hey guys. I'm just wondering if you guys would recommend stock DHD for a user? I have been reading the forums for a while and most everybody has rooted and changed roms and radios. I don't know if I would be comfortable with it at first. Would you guys still recommend the DHD to a person who wouldn't root it or hack it? I'm sick of my icrap. I don't want to invalidate the warranty. But I want a good machine from the start.
Opinions?

from what i can say, with or without custom rom, the dhd is a top device and fast enough
the rooting, custom rom and radio thing is just for people who want to get the maximum out of the device
its stock still a very good device

Well if u aint gona root it and install homebrew then buddy i am suggesting HTC SENSTATION 100% .... its gona be released mid may or 1st june... its a much better cell phone... i am getting it myself

I got my DHD for about a week now and rooted it the day after I got it and actually the only reason at that moment for me to do so was because I got a lot of stock apps and trials (seriously.. Don't put 2 minute trials in it!), but I played around all day and all night with it and although my custom rom is better than stock, it's still a great phone!
But as Leather|Face already mentioned, there is a new wave of HTC phones coming out pretty soon which are better, so you might want to wait if you have the patience

The DHD is the best HTC device at the moment and although there is the sensation around the corner something better is always on the horizon. Even stock it's a great device.

Haven't touched my DHD after a month, , it is unlocked and unbranded, the only reason I'll probably mess with it is to get rid of all the social networking crud and other software I don't want, that's built into it.
Seems pretty good stock to me.

Hey guys ... i've done a lot of reading and still scared as hell to root and flash homebrewed rom on my DHD since i've never done that b4... i've found a LOT of instructions and guidelines on "how to" ... but still i'd ask if any1 of you expirienced rooters would take a moment and post or PM me a really really detailed guide on how to root and flash custom rom such as CM7 with 2.3.3 and links to all thw tools i need. I've had desire and now dhd, but never rooted a phone. I would appreciate if any1 could do this favour. I'm a noob, but still, none of us were born with all sorts of abillities, and we gotta learn it somehow ...
Thx.

The guides around are top notch and pretty much noob proof, you'd really have to 'try' and brick your device. If you need even more depth instructions I'm going to venture out there and say maybe rooting isn't for you. I had no idea about anything, did reading in the morning and was flashing kernels by night. Just follow the instructions!

I do have the patience. I'll wait for the sensation that's coming out first on Vodafone . Another month with i****. Oh well xD. I bet though the reviews will point out some major flaws. I've been reading about the lg optimus 2x and it has a lot of flaws. Same with the se arc. I also considered those two. This htc model has the least amount of complaints as far as I can see. but I'll wait another month. thanks guys.

In your situation I'd probably do the same. As someone else said, there's always something "better" coming along but, in this case, it's nearly here so you may as well wait a few weeks.
Regarding the OP though, my DHD was acquired last October unbranded and unlocked, but I haven't rooted it. Just set it up as I want it and installed the apps that made my life easier. It'd be nice to be able to zap the apps. I don't want (the unsociable networking apps have been mentioned above ... ) but set them to 'not sync' and they may as well not be there anyway (as I don't have a faceplant or twatter account they couldn't sync anyway ).
Enjoy the new phone!

Rooted or unrooted desire HD is too awesome. The only reason I rooted was because I got bored . However I would definitely recommend rooting to get the most out of your phone.
Like other people are saying, maybe it might be better if you hold of for the sensation if you want a stock phone.

I'd wait for the HTC Sensation because i've too much problems with my DHD.
Misaligned parts, blurry camera, crappy sound through speaker and headphones.
But despite my problems the DHD also has A LOT of great things: great Speed, LOTS of RAM, huge ROM, a really great display (I prefer the LCD of the DHD over the AMOLED of the Desire).

I brought my DHD at Feb. I didn't do anything to it (util the end of March).
But I'm still very satisfy with it's performance.
Maybe Sensation will have better performance due on better hardware....
For DHD, I still think it a phone with great C/P.
I was afraid to root my DHD at the very first.
But I found out that's actually very easy by fallowing the instruction on this forum.
Now I'm flashing different ROMs and apps into my phone and trying different tricks mentioned by other friends.
You will love it, once you root it ~~~ XD

I think you really have to try hard to brick the phone, as long as you can follow simple instructions then you will be fine .

There are tonnes of guides/videos/faqs littered all over the internet on how to root the DHD. There really is no reason to be scared of doing it. I would also reccomend doing it sooner rather then later, as then you don't have to worry about backing up what you have already put on your phone.
Contradicting what others have said above me, I actually don't like the DHD as stock. Sense seems to me to be very shiny and pretty, but it's slow(ish) and filled with rubbish I didn't want. I flashed CM7 when it came out a few weeks back, and haven't looked back since. It just feels so much more responsive, and it's nice to have the latest version of Android (2.3.3), which we are still waiting to see from HTC.
I would strongly recommend the Desire HD, as I think it really is one of the best phones on the market, but I also recommend rooting and putting a different ROM on it too.

Starting to regret buying a nexus one

I know I shouldn't post this here just wanted the devs to maybe respond so we know what is holding up the fun.
I am not a jerk but what happen to the nexus one. We are constantly seeing devs going back to the g1 porting tons of new items into the roms while my nexus is still using the same old same old.
what happened to the fm radio for desire? bluetooth to work on desire? sony x10 roms? etc etc?
all i see lately is a bunch of modded kernels that all seem to be tampering with the processor way too much.
I am just starting to feel like my 500.00 phone was a waste to root.
thanks to all that have done great things for nexus, just kinda was expecting a little more.

so you expected the devs to make your phone worth $500? thats not cool.
also in case you haven't noticed the n1 runs 2.1 which is causing problems for ports which ran 1.5 or 1.6.
You are going to have to wait for a dev to get a desire to get the info needed to get the bluetooth or radio working. And that is assuming they are exactly the same which they probably aren't.
And as you stated above this doesn't belong here. It should be in the general section.
Really?
People keep porting stuff to the G1 because there are a ton of people that have that phone... and it still kinda sucks. I used either a G1 or a MT3G for the last 10 months. Now that I switched to the N1 I feel like everything just works the way I always wanted it to on the G1/MT3G. What more do you need?
The Desire ROMs are better than ANY port to the G1. Yeah there is a thing or two that isn't perfect, but WTF, man. It's damn good.
Cyanogen is near perfection. I keep toying with it trying to find **** wrong with it and... nothing. Obviously there's some cool stuff out there but why don't you buy some time looking for the coolest apps you can find. Use your phone... don't tool with it.

I didn't want a Desire I wanted to buy the next highly supported phone by the Rom community.
I am not *****ing I am simply asking what is causing the dry spell.
Is there something the Devs know about a new powerhouse tmobile phone around the corner so they dont want to waste time or updates coming that change everything soon.
I am not bashing so please everyone stop being negitive.
Seriously? The day I bought my HTC Tilt 1, I hard-spled it, and put in a custom rom. Why? Because I got it almost a year after it came out, and the stock os was slow as heck, and custom roms were always better and faster and so on and so forth.
The G1 has been out for over a year and a half. The nexus has been out for 3-4 months. There is a LOT more known about the workings of the g1 than the nexus, there are a LOT more people with a g1 vs a nexus, and so on and so forth. If you wanted a g1, you should've gotten a g1.
I bought a nexus, and I haven't rooted it/unlocked the bootloader or any of that. I haven't felt the need to - Stock, the phone performs light years ahead of any prev. phone I've owned, and I see no reason in rooting it that would add something I don't already have (that I need). It looks good, it works well, it's fast... it has even converted me to using a touchscreen keyboard (in both landscape and portrait) with no regrets whatsoever.
My advice: Give it time, and be patient. Either that, or learn to code and hack roms, and do it yourself. No need to be ungrateful towards those who ARE working towards what you feel they should have done already.
I know what you mean. I'm still waiting for Cyanogen to make my Nexus shoot lasers...
Honestly , I would have to agree with you man. I was led to believe that the potential was going to be endless with this power house we all have bu , the only thing that has REALLY come out of rooting that was good is the wifi tether and USB tether. Everything else is pretty much stock.

Um did I ever say I was ungreatful?
I had a G1 as I stated.
Dude, you can't compare a port to a phone with less than half the specs to having the real thing.
The g1 is like a pitbull, big and meaty but slow as hell. Nexus is like a grayhound, fast as hell but you can still do a bit to improve.
I for one am happy I upgraded. This is just one of those times you should have kept your mouth shut. (or fingers as it is)
Well, the saying goes...if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself.
Dont take what he said literally, It did sound like you just bought the phone hoping the Devs would take care of you and make your buy worth it. They are all doing what they can with whatever resource available for them.
You might think the Devs are slacking coz they still havent fixed the bluetooth/FM radio problem, but incase you havent noticed these ROMs are still in the Alpha and Beta stages, and they are called that for a reason. Come on man, you dont expect the Devs to perfect a ROM from a phone that hasnt even come out yet, or just came out?!
The G1 has more development, thats because it started as CUPCAKE, a lot more updates came after that, so a lot of stuff for the Devs to play with... But even with the best possible ROM you can flash in the G1 it will never compare to the Nexus! not even a stock Nexus.
P.S. I'd be glad to trade you my G1 for your N1. Just holler

No offense but this phone was only released barely 4 months ago. I think it may be a little unrealistic to expect certain hacks to be perfected already. You should try excercising little patience and enjoy your phone for what it is, a great piece of technology. I am running Cyanogenmod 5.0.6 test3 and I am loving it! Go check out the Magic forum and talk to some of the people who have a Rogers Magic or Magic+, I was one of them and they still don't even have root! How about the iPhone 3GS with the latest fixed bootrom? That may help you appreciate the simple things that the N1 offers(Unlockable bootloader out of the box sans warranty). I am sure people are hard at work on features you may want but I am sure these devs are prioritizing what they feel is most important and that may not agree with what you think is priority. Enjoy your phone becuase it is a great phone, if not sell it ebay you can probably get a good return on it.
LoL. Patience, My Young Padawan.

Well what were you expecting??? Sounds like you were just dead wrong on what to expect.
Root doesn't give much to the g1 as well, it just enables you to access /system/ and su permissions. One can say that the g1 needed to have a **** load of tweaks to make it run better, while the nexus is just an updated and better optimized phone.
You can't even compare running 2.1 on a g1 with that on a nexus.

Will root really be achieved?

Hello guys...
I'm only asking this because I just bought the phone 4 days ago, and I can still send it back, and go for the HTC Desire (which I think i should have done at first place...)
Is root achievable? I mean, you guys are trying to get root or you WILL get root?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not rushing you guys! I just want to make sure before I give this phone back...
Btw, if u guys need something, I'm here to help, anything u guys need to test, i can test it on my phone....
Thanks!

as of right now who knows it could be days month years who knows when, your better off with the HTC,
man your guess is as good as mine.. starting to get frustrating.. I might go and switch to the desire as well..
Faith keeps me strong! lol
you should consider the change, you shouldn't count with the root in your decision since nobody knows when. but ill tell u something:
- I much prefer LED than AMOLED (Desire). Although LED is "spender", uses more battery and less "vivid, when you are out, just under the sun rays, on AMOLED screens you don't see any bit... moreover it's 4'' versus 3.7
- Although Desire camera still being good, Xperia is awesome.....
- i'd like more stetically speaking Xperia than Desire. Although i dont like so much physical bottons on the bottom
For me it's not the end the rooting... Im still having all the programs I need and use more often (copilot, sport tracker, music player, browser and mail. for me it's enough). stetically 2.1 and 1.6 are the same, and for me doesnt provide us that much more everybody speaks about....
If i could choose i'd prefer nexus one, i'd like more the shape of the bottom part, more rounded and i think fits better on a single hand (xperia could result a bit difficult)
I wouldn't pay many more for the trade....
what do you want root for ?
is it only for tethering, installing new firmware and some more fluff ?
Stick with your x10 if it is only for those 2 reasons. You can tether with some payd software ( free if you don't use any sort protected connection , https )
you're gonna maybe impress your friends for a minute or 2 and you will get sick of changing firmware every single days
magic/dream favorite users firmware = cyanogen rom because it simple , fast and no fluff
you won't care about 2.2 fluff after a week or 2
you won't impress any girls with some soft fluff. You're phone body AND your own body might impress girls
Now
a good reason to go with another phone might something like mini usb ? do you like mini usb ?
Finally
XPERIA X10 General
Discussion about the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 (general Q&A, tips & tricks)
it depends on your needs ,x10 recently has no root and may be forever ,but it is a good pice of hardware better than desire in every point of comparison but the problem that will face the x10 may be in the coming few monthes is the support allot of apps are going to require android 2.1 as a minimum requirement ,and as we all know sony will not update until the end of the year and for 2.1 only ,at this time all phones will be carring 2.2 and may be 2.3 so you will face compitability issues again ,if you care for a long time support that is achived by root then go for desire ,if not and you care more for hardware go for x10 . best wishes with your choice
There is more than meets the eye with 2.1 and especially 2.2. instead of just extra fluffiness.
The question here is if anyone is working on rooting X10. I don't miss to many functionalities anyway, the only thing I am scared is that 1.6 will be less and less supported with new applications in the market. By that time hopefully 2.1 will appear.

HELLO?? android 2.2... there are so many improvements over 1.6 for eg. support for FLASH!
removing all the random sh*t that SE has put like moxier etc. And the sheer joy of having better faster and sleeker roms which will really take the x10 to a whole new level.
I love my x10 and inspite of ppl telling me otherwise, i think its a great phone with immense potential. But as I see it, we're using the phone at 50% capacity.

I found teh irony when I read the ashman's post, after I posted ^^
What i want from root is to take out from my phone all the SE rubbish that came with the phone like Moxier and the rest... and also to run better roms, that will run faster and better on this phone than this crap that came loaded into it..
Last but not the least, be capable of running the software at full capacity, ie, all the memory that this phone have... i don't see any reason why SE have released a phone with that amount of memory with a software that doesn't support it... some may say that SE were thinking on the upgrade to 2.1 at the end of the year, but wait, WHY THE HECK do i have to wait till the end of the year to have an OS that will be already obsolete by then...
The only reason I'm keeping this phone, is because it is an awesome piece of hardware... i really like it.. although I'm gonna really regret it when i find out that SE was lying when said that they are working on the battery life issues...
I really hope that they change their mind and upgrade it to 2.2 or even 2.3 if it is avaiable...
And also hope that it doesn't come loaded with their stuff, like timescape and moxier... i just want the clean and pure Android OS, without any additional crap... I know that it will only be achieved by root anyways... IF root comes...

New Desire HD

Hi guys
Im looking to get myself a desire hd. Can anyone please share their experiences and whether I should get one?
Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk
I'd recommend one. But, and a slight but, HTC are very near to releasing the HTC Sensation. If I were in your shoes, I'd wait for that.
Yes it is an excellent phone.. but as the poster above said the HTC Sensation will be released shortly - even if you don't want that phone (I wouldn't know why you wouldn't other than price) wait for it to come out so DHD becomes cheaper
Thats the thing I can get the DHD for 200 bucks offline. I wont be able to afford the sensation. Overall how would you guys rate it out of 10?
Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk
Around 8.3/10
I love my Desire HD.. personally I would rate it 9/10
Great phone.. battery can be a bit of a let down though depending on how you use your phone, but if you root it and install a custom rom you can easily squeeze more juice out of it (currently getting 2 1/2 days with medium use) and it's not so much of a problem.

it's very easy to root and install a custom rom.. check out the guides in the Desire HD Android Development section and you'll find all the info you need in the stickys (sorry can't post a link )...
as for bricking it is near impossible.. if you read through the guides before you start and try to understand them, then you will have no problem at all, and if you get stuck ask someone here and I'm sure they'd be able to help you out
Simply a great phone. Rooting and installing ROMs is piss easy, at first all the info may be overwhelming but once you understand what to do and do it you will see its difficulty is more like 2/10.
$200 for a DHD is a steal, well here in NZ anyway.
-Bad things-
720p Video Recording can drop fps when recording in low light conditions
Video Recording sound quality is crap (8kHz, mono)
Screen is a normal TFT type LCD (viewing angle could be better)
WiFi signal can be weak if you have your hand over the antenna which is behind the battery cover and a case
Speaker is average
But despite all those bad things this phone still rocks, I won't be upgrading for a long time.
Thanks guys im going to get it on tuesday hopefully and I cant wait. Do you guys reckon its a good upgrade from the x10i as I love this phone

Guys just another quick question. Is the latest firmware available to root or do I need to be on a certain firmware?
Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk
Check the firmware when get it but if its 1.72 or higher it will need to be downgraded which is really easy I dont have my dhd any more I just got the arc but I wish I didnt get rid of my dhd as I miss it

Great phone.. battery can be a bit of a let down though depending on how you use your phone, but if you root it and install a custom rom you can easily squeeze more juice out of it (currently getting 2 1/2 days with medium use) and it's not so much of a problem.

I've used the X10i too, the DHD is so much smoother and the Sense UI is so much better than Sony Ericssons.
Really happy with my DHD, except for the speaker. I used to listen to music/podcast through the speaker on my previous mobile (while in the kitchen, at work...), and unfortunately DHD is NOT good enough for that purpose. If you are on custom 2.3.3 rom (no official update from HTC yet), then you can slightly help the matter using Volume+. Other then that, just loving my phone.

Had an x10 before and those things are not even in the same league as the desire hd. The software is just so much better on these phones and battery life is better despite the larger battery of the x10.

That is great. You guts are making me even more excited lol. Now just another quick question. Once again I apologise for the amount of queries just like my research before hand. Can someone recommend say the most stable rom available with good battery life? Even though I might just stick to stock and root and optimise it. If obviously there are any optimisations for it such as the ones for the x10. Reason being im scared I will brick the DHD and I heard if you brick any phone its not possible to restore it. Which is what I like about the x10. Ive flashed it so many times.

Cyanogen 7.1 most likely be available when you receive your DHD. And that is a great ROM.
Don't worry about bricking your handset, It's very hard to do unintentionally.

HTC Evo Shift Vs Samsung Epic 4G *ROOTED*

So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.
Will be posting in both sides to get more answers
Easy answer... look at the topics and responsees in both forums and decide which group you would rather deal with...
And then look at the rom and root options of both. HTC is on a whole nother level.

Well seeing how the Epic community jumped on my question much faster, with more people ... Lol jk.
But any more suggestions people? Thanks in advance
Do not get the Epic!!!!! I didnt like it as its made like ****. The shift is much faster and even my sister wishes she would have just gotten the EVO and shes not even a power user. HTC makes the best phones on the market and I will always be buying my phones from them.
Get the Shift, Root it, Install Shift Deck and enjoy an awesome phone

This. And I own an Epic (my wife has the shift). I'd never trade my Epic in for anything, at least at this point, but yeah the Epic forum is full of complainers, trolls, and guys with tiny wangs (or so I assume with how they have to constantly act like king s**t in the forums all of the time). And shift has a ton more devs, plus working cm7. But the phone itself is sweet, and faster (in my opinion, with the right rom), and has an independent number row. And the screen is bigger and looks nicer. I could go on and on about differences, but I've gotta run for now.

From everything I've heard, the CPU in the shift has the edge on the Epic, but the GPU in the Epic edges out the Shift. If battery life is important to you, I say hands down go with the Shift. I easily get a full day every day and my friend with an epic is always asking people for chargers, even changed all his backgrounds to black to save battery (doesn't save on LCD but on LED it does). He does everything he can and still struggles for a full day out of the thing. Now I speak from what he's told me, I've never owned an Epic myself. Overall I've been thrilled with the shift, does everything I ask of it with no lag and no complaints.

I certainly had this issue on stock rom on the Epic. I couldn't even make it through a work shift without the battery dying. But custom roms on the Epic blow that out of the water. I now can go a whole day of moderate usage and still have around 30-40%. But I don't know, I'm guessing with a custom rom the Shift still kicks the Epic's ass battery-wise. My wife is running CM7 (which the Epic may not see for a looong time), and I don't ever see her reaching for a charger or complaining of the battery. And being of the female variety, she tends to use a lot of the live wallpapers, widgets, etc...

The Shift now comes stock with Gingerbread from Sprint. There is no way to root it. You are SOL. I pulled all of my hair out when I figured this out.
Turns out Android (maybe not "Android", but the current ecosystem) sucks hard. Suckers like you and I come online and see threads and guides about rooting that simply won't ever work on our devices because they've been manufacturer updated. And sites like this don't seem to give a damn -- at least update the root "guide", mods.
Quite worthless. Don't fall for this BS. The Shift is again unrootable, just like almost all updated phones from Sprint. Chances are, with the devs having moved on or got lucky enough to have an old version of Android when they got theirs, all new ones will remain unrootable forever. #@(*$

You need to take a breather my friend. The stock 2.3 will get rooted in time, just like the 2.2 did. "Unrootable forever" is just an ignorant statement. If all you're gonna do is rant and rave a bunch of misinformation, please keep the post to yourself.
Back on topic...
I have a shift and purchased the Epic for my wife.
The Epic display is nicer, and the epic actually feels lighter (and is?) Than my shift. It also has more keys on the keyboard.
However, on stock ROMs my shift seems faster and has better battery life. UI's are a very personal preference, but I much prefer the HTC sense and overall software stack vs Samsung's touchwiz. It just seems to work better.
I've beeen running custom ROMs on my shift and most of them work well. About ready to try a custom ROM on the Epic to see if it works better...

ive been very happy with both my shift and the dev community here (who have turned me from an ignorant n00b-lout into a root-user) and all those who have helped me try and solve my problems.
As for rooting gingersense, it will happen soon enough, just give the devs here some time.
My wife has the Epic and I have the Shift 4G. I can't stand her phone, and she can't stand mine. Tho we both take our phone's off the charger in the morning and when we drive home, mine still is in the green where she has to use the car charger going home. Then again, neither of our phones are rooted. I have rooted her phone in the past, didn't seem to make much difference. Still running the crappy samsung software.

New phone!

Well ladys and gentlemen the time has come. My brand new HTC sensationXE arrived today so my little wildfire will be moving into retirement this has been such a great forum to me through all the noob moments, teaching me all I now know and forever cementing my love for android! Although i won't be leaving this forum ( don't think I could) most of my time will be over at the sensation forums. Just wanted to say a special thanks to scratch and slymobi for their help with the sim lock thread, Arco for the cm7 Rom, the misses for the best valentines preset ever and of course everyone else who committed to this forum! Rock on! Heavy metal man

3 reasons ive been put off htc one.
1: Bootloader unlocked by htcdev? Dunno if there's an alternative yet, i haven't looked so there might be but if there isn't its definitely a no for me. I want full s-off not just a little bit of it.
2: No sd card, yes i know music and pictures load faster on internal memory but i want the choice of where i want to put things and the ability to expand when i fill it with all my failed mods!
3: Not able to remove the battery? Well thats just a silly idea unless the battery will last forever with seriously heavy usage, bare in mind i most days struggle to get 5 hours from my wildfire and have to take a spare battery everywhere.
Other than that the screen looks sh*thot but sadly not for me.........

1) well, i only modded wildfire because it was slow by default. i persume, a 1.5 dual core snapdragon s4 will do the trick. sp, maybe i wont even root it. if i do its gonna be when my warranty expires because im paying the full price for it.
2) i manage with 2gb sd card on my wildfire which is still half empty, i even have 512 mb ext... so thats about 1.2-1.3 gb pf usable space (you know memory is smaller than whats stated 2 gb ~ 1,8 gb) so thatll be fine, im not a smartphone gamer either so one memory hog less (im more of a playstation kinda guy)
3. battery can always be managed, i use my wildfire pretty much all the time on my almost 2 year old battery and i get day, day and a half of battery life, more when i use it less .
all in all, looks like one s is the one ive been waiting for
Perfect for you then, it really is an awesome phone, i managed to get my hands on one the other day for half hour, the screen looks amazing and its lightning fast after using a buzz for so long but for those reasons above i can't get one and am thinking/dreaming of an s3 if they'll give me one!

If you are looking for Proper Unlocked bootloaders and Dev Support, Samsung is not much better off from what I have seen so far. Apparently, everything is "hacky and dirty". There is no proper recovery partition, so even a CWM recovery has to be integrated into the kernel. You cant flash a recovery by itself. Also, no things like Fastboot. You have to depend on Samsung softwares like Odin.
Also, Samsung's coding is terrible from what the dev's have been saying. They use unstandardized coding techniques, and its a pain to reproduce the same features on AOSP / Other ROMs. The Galaxy S2 did not get a build of AOSP ICS till a leaked official GS2 ROM was out.
I agree on Point 2 and 3 though. They are great exit tools for when you mess up your phone. Think about it, when you experience a bootloop, what is the 1st thing that comes on your mind? A battery pull, obviously.
BTW, Dump the S3 and get the S2. With the price drop after the S3 was announced, this phone is now terrific VFM. Still nothing that can't be run on this device.

J/k, anyway, excellent choice. I prefer the One S myself over the One X.
Thanks for the info 3, i hadn't really read much about Samsung coding either to tell the truth just saw the amount of dev support you guys have over there and presumed it must be slightly better, I know i'd probably love an sgs 2 coming from here but if the 3 ends up with as much support for it do i really want to be stuck in a 2 year contract and miss out on all the fun with a 2 knowing there's a 3 out there, just out of reach.
Decisions decisions............... Still my carrier might not give me one though so may be forced into a sgs2.

well ive had the phone for a few days and i have to say im loving it
the screen is sexy and silky smooth, and not to mention big enough ^^ from opening it it took me 7 minutes to s-off with revolutionary ive gotta say touch recoverys rock!!! they are themeable and everything, 4ext for the win lol
i have made the jump to ics in the form of the android revolution HD rom by mike1986 im missing the boot into recovery option from the the power off menu, but im hoping to find a work around for that being able to unlock with my face alone is epic and the download speeds im getting from giffgaff is very nice.
im very very pleased with this device atm and i would highly recommend it. and if **** hits the fan, you can always battery pull!
Good luck with your new phone
IMO the GS3 is terrible. All the fancy software is useless because I'll put CM9 on it as Touchwiz is absolutely disgusting. Their coding is terrible as 3xeno said and the UI is worse than Cupcake. The specs are mediocre, the AT&T One X's S4 chipset is better IMO. The screen is also mediocre, they made it 0.8 of an inch bigger than the One X to show off. And the rumours were so off, especially the 1080p screen. The nature lockscreen is a cool idea but the ripple effect is just too much time, especially when you just want to unlock the phone quickly and make a call.
