[Q] Can't flash a different kernel - Xperia Arc General

Hi everyone,
First I should say that I searched and read tons of posts before posting this question so please keep the flaming at a minimum.. thank you...
I have an Xperia Arc currently running the following:
Stock ICS Beta Kernel With CWM 5.5.0
Acronium ICS Beta ROM 2.2
Baseband that ends with .56
After trying ICS for a while I've decided that it is way too buggy for daily use. I want to go back to GB. I want to use Arconium 8.2 with DoomKernel V22...
The problem is.. I am trying to flash baseband 34(or 36 i can't remember).. I try flashing with FlashTool.. no go.. it seems to flash alright but when I boot the os.. the baseband still shows .56...
I try flashing DoomKernel V22.. and after a reboot I still see my old ICS Beta Kernel...
Am I doing something wrong here? All I want is a kernel that permits overclocking and Arconium 8.2...
Please help if you can... Thank you..

First install a clean .62 FW on your arc, then flash doomkernel v22. Go in recovery mode and install the wifi modules for v22. Now you go in fastboot mode and flash de baseband, after that go in recovery mode and install the baseband patch. Now you start your phone and look if everything is okay. After that you can install Arconium.

Thanks for the response Spit.. can you please clarify what you mean by fw .62?

The Firmware version i mean (The last two numbers of the build version). The kernel only works on FW:.42/.58/.62 from Gingerbread. U can use Flashtool to flash it. After that you flash the doomlord kernel.

Why only the MIUI

Hello everybody,
I'm trying to install a custom rom on a phone of a friend, an xperia x10i
I tried several rom, but the only one the seems to work is the MIUI rom, that unfortunately does not have any support for the camera...
I tried all the roms I found here, but except for the MIUI rom, all the other get stuck at the beginning, when the logo "sony ericcson appears.
Does anyone have any idea or suggestion?
Thank you very much
depends what your baseband is

that isn't what he's asking...
he's asking why only the miui rom will work.
I assume it is because he is trying gb roms with the wrong baseband and kernel

[Q] New defy, want to get ICS/MIUI on it, help?

Hey
I just got a brand new Defy and I'm hoping I can get ICS on it. However, in my country there's no T-Mobile, Verizon, Orange or whatever, I bought it in an electronics store, so I have absolutely no idea about what CG version it is. I've already read the beginner's guide from top to bottom, but I still have some doubts:
1. How do I know which CG version do I have? (I need to know so I can know how to get back to stock in case of warranty)
Nevermind, I found the answer >_> CG 4 SBF 3.4.2 (Froyo)
2. I've seen lots of ROMs for this device, but their instructions aren't very clear and I don't want to brick my device (which, from what I've read it is very hard to do) or get stuck in a higher CG version.
3. The beginner's guide is cool, but I haven't seen any tutorials on installing a specific rom (in my case ICS) so, I'd appreciate some pointers here, if possible
Thanks in advance! =)

I have a defy+, so i have 2.3.6 on it. But you don't need to flash any new firmware to get ICS or MIUI, since they both have froyo builds. CG version only changes when you flash full SBF, not when installing zips and custom ROMs. So you shouldn't worry about getting stuck on a higher CG.
So what you need of course is a rooted phone , the SndInitDefy_2.0.apk (to install custom recovery and bootmenu because of locked bootloader), install the latest bootmenu (don't mind installing the old one although it might work on froyo). And there you're ready to flash! (to enter custom recovery on your defy, reboot your phone and press the volume down key when you see the blue led) I assume you know how to use the custom recovery, so I won't go into detail on that.
Since I haven't flashed any froyo ICS builds before, I don't dare to tell you how to myself! So just head over to the main CM9 ICS thread You'll find a guide in the first post. Nevermind, i'll just quote it here:

How to flash ICS (Defy Builds)
1:Head Over To Stable recovery
2:Wipe Data
3:Install Zip from SD Card
4:Select ICS(Defy) .zip
5:Flash
6:Flash CM7 Kernel
7:Clear Cache and Dalvik Cache
First Boot will take some time...

You need to flash Google Apps seperately through recovery. You should find the files and links needed in the thread linked above. Know the difference between the Defy+ builds (with gingerbread [gb] kernel), and the Defy builds with froyo kernel.
Please note that ICS for defy is still in it's early stages and you might experience bugs. But most people still think it's worth it! xD Sorry if I made it too detailed for you, but then others can make use of it too! Oh, I hope I haven't said wrong that will soft brick your phone! Flashing the wrong kernel always gives me bootloader error! Anyway bricking really isn't that scary (only the first time i can confirm) It's good to have an SBF with RSDLite and Drivers installed on your PC just in case
Oh! And then If you want MIUI, just do the normal wipes and flash the ROM. Let me recommend MIUI Pikachu edition by TweetyPeety, the best MIUI ROM out there! It even has the touch based AROMA installer in recovery where you can customize the installation!
I was wandering if there is any advantage in flashing a newer kernel (either CM9 kernel or a GB full SBF) on defy if I'm using CM7/CM9/MIUI
Also, I tried CM9 without flashing the kernel, and it works, so I can't figure what difference would that step make. How does changing the default kernel affect the use of custom roms? Any hit in performance/usability? Would I have to use Defy+ roms if I flash CM9 kernel?

I think you shouldn't flash new kernel for CM9 since it is in alpha
it is better to keep on CM7.1 and wait until a stable version from CM9 (unless you are a real HW or SW developer)

[Q] I need a new Kernel

Hello everybody.
I got a milestone 2 some months ago and I had a working cyanogenmod 7 on it until I decided to try MIUI ROM. I was on a downgraded gingerbread kernel (thanks to endless7) and I tried to reflash an ITA 2.3.4 sbf. It didn't work. Then I was desperate and decided to try to flash a CH gingerbread kernel... This doesn't seem to work, even if I try to flash the chinese SBF.
Could anyone help me??? Thanks in advance!
up! still need a working gingerbread kernel to flash with RSD...thanks guys
Up! Nobody going to help? Please!
Now you know what "low activity devices" mean
Honestly, I did not understand what you did. Lemme try paraphrasing and see if I understand what your problem is.
You were on CM7. You mean Endless7 version I suppose coz that is the one with GB kernel. You decided to try MIUI. This is where I lost you. Were you able to downgrade, or you are just saying that your kernel is downgrade-able???
Second thing that I don't quite understand is what you mean that flashing with SBF does not seem to work. Did the flash process fail or the process was successful but you were not able to boot up your phone?? If it is the latter, wiping data from android recovery should help you boot up your device.

[Q] bootloader version - how to change / upgrade ?

Hello,
I bought an acer A500 which was under HC 3.2, may be 3.0.
I have rooted it, and tried some ROM.
I used this tuto :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307539&highlight=root+without+downgrade
after few ROM test, I have choosed, for the moment, the latest flexReaper (1.031...)
I have Acer Recovery, which allow me to reboot easily in recovery mode.
now, after reading several post here, I have few question :
how can I know if my bootloader is HC or ICS ?
how can I know the version number of this bootloader ?
can I change the bootloader to another version , keeping the actual ROM ?
can I install a new bootloader with CWM ?
I have a CWM rev 1.3.4 by thor2002ro. is it good ? there is better than this ?
is the bootloader able to change the performance of the tablet ?
or just the kernel / Rom can do it ?
many thank you for any answer.

If you haven't flash an ICS Bootloader, or a Stock ICS Beta rom, then you have a stock Acer Bootloader.
To change bootloaders, you generally run the bootloader.zip through CWM/RA immediately after installing the rom, according to this post;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1517181
You have an old CWM recovery. You can either goto Tegraowners and upgrade to a newer version, or Flash RA Recovery from here through your current CWM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22392691&postcount=104
Your choice.
Kernels generally change the performance, although a well coded rom also plays a factor.

If you have Acer Recovery Installer v2.74 it tells you what bootloader version you're running, as well as the recovery version.
Hello,
just to be sure :
>stock ICS beta rom :
are more for developper, isn't it ? I read in some post that it was for development only.
flexReaper, Tabooney Icylicious are not stock ICS beta ??? isn't it ?
> or Flash RA Recovery from here through your current CWM
I have installed acer rovery installer 2.74 from the market.
with that, I have flash clockWorldMod recovery rev 1.3.4 by Thor2002ro.
under this tool, I can see : bootloader version 3.01
my rom is the latest flexReaper.
what do you think of that ? can I upgrade or do something better ?
thank you for any help.

If you would open a rom.zip you would see that the custom roms got no bootloader .blob and recovery to be installed.
That is so you would be able to flash without problems what you want.
Flexreaper, Icylisiuos , Lightspeed, and taboonay are all custom roms that can be installed with cwm or ra recovery and now the new twr recovery.
What is the best custom ICS rom , well all custom roms on here have there quality and is more up to the user what he or she wants.
ok, so I will look for bootloader more update than mine in this case.
the Rom Flexreaper I use during few days works very well, and now I am looking for the best bootloader and kernel to work with taht rom
anyway, good point, I should have look inside the zip file of a rom !
thanks
olivier
You don't need to update the bootloader. It will make no difference in the performance of the kernel or ROM. If you do update the ICS bootloader, you'll need to udpate the kernel to work with it and you will not be able to go back to an HC based ROM.
Just keep your 3.01 bootloader and use custom HC or ICS Roms until Acer releases ICS.
Hi
Well this helped me.
Because of all these terms are confusing in the beginning.
And a lot is all spread around this forum.
For noobs like me some terms like bootloader and wath to watch out for should be stickyd.
Well up to next page of reading hehe
Thx

well to backup your stock rom first of all you need to root your phone with superoneclick google it.Then install latest 2nd init form here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212.after that reboot and when your phone blinks blue push vol down button to get into bootmenu.select custom recovery/backup all(to backup you rom)
3)either you download epsy/quarks ics build http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432100 or aopk http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1585425 and the ics gapps.then move those to sd card and enter bootmenu again select wipe data/cache and install zip from sd card:chose one of the 2 above and the gapps after finish reboot and VOILA ics
How is camera in ICSROM?

Thank you, have some questions again
Thank you very much for replying, i am half journey way to start updating to ICS
i have downloaded epsy CM9-NIGHTLY-120406-Defy.zip, is it right one? is there a stable version?
when to overlock the cpu after installing ICS or can be done before?
I'm not sure if there's a stable CM9 release for Defy.

After the update..
I'm using 06.04 by Epsylon3 with Froyo kernel and green lens: I find it stable enough, good for day to day usage. There's no CM9 stable version, not even a RC one.
You can overclock the CPU from the bootmenu, although CM9 comes with 1GHz standard. Maybe undervolt it a bit.

Confused on updating android
I am bit confused updating android.. We are wiping the data and reloading a ICS right?? why do we need froyo kernel to update to ICS

We need froyo kernel because we have SOC (green) camera ;-(
So we need to flash CM7 kernel too. If you use CM9 kernel, then your SOC camera will not work
Procedures in this thread in the first post
I also had to flash ICS Gapps zip (somehow ommited in the procedure)
You can use mentioned nightly - works fine
I would propose to use titanium backup from the market to backup all your apps with data - then you can simply restore them back with all data inside (but your apps - do not restore system apps)
