Hello everybody.
I got a milestone 2 some months ago and I had a working cyanogenmod 7 on it until I decided to try MIUI ROM. I was on a downgraded gingerbread kernel (thanks to endless7) and I tried to reflash an ITA 2.3.4 sbf. It didn't work. Then I was desperate and decided to try to flash a CH gingerbread kernel... This doesn't seem to work, even if I try to flash the chinese SBF.
Could anyone help me??? Thanks in advance!
up! still need a working gingerbread kernel to flash with RSD...thanks guys
Up! Nobody going to help? Please!
Now you know what "low activity devices" mean
Honestly, I did not understand what you did. Lemme try paraphrasing and see if I understand what your problem is.
You were on CM7. You mean Endless7 version I suppose coz that is the one with GB kernel. You decided to try MIUI. This is where I lost you. Were you able to downgrade, or you are just saying that your kernel is downgrade-able???
Second thing that I don't quite understand is what you mean that flashing with SBF does not seem to work. Did the flash process fail or the process was successful but you were not able to boot up your phone?? If it is the latter, wiping data from android recovery should help you boot up your device.

Hello.
I've rooted my phone a while back and currently have Recovery 3.0.2.4. Everytime I try to install a new ROM, i go into a boot-loop and I have to reload my Froyo based ROM.
I've just read that Gingerbread came out on the MT4G and I was wondering if its worth un-rooting my phone (if thats possible), to get this update. I'm not making much use of ROMs because I always get bootloops. This is probably due to the fact that I never have a version that works on both Froyo and Gingerbread based ROMs as I don't know where to find one.
If you guys were in my situation, what would you do?

The newest 3.x.x.x Recovery image will handle both 2.2 and 2.3 ROMs. Are you verifying the MD5SUM of the download prior to flashing them?
I don't know exactly how to do that. I don't see Md5 sums on ROM manager, where I'm attempting to download the C7 Mod.
Hey
I just got a brand new Defy and I'm hoping I can get ICS on it. However, in my country there's no T-Mobile, Verizon, Orange or whatever, I bought it in an electronics store, so I have absolutely no idea about what CG version it is. I've already read the beginner's guide from top to bottom, but I still have some doubts:
1. How do I know which CG version do I have? (I need to know so I can know how to get back to stock in case of warranty)
Nevermind, I found the answer >_> CG 4 SBF 3.4.2 (Froyo)
2. I've seen lots of ROMs for this device, but their instructions aren't very clear and I don't want to brick my device (which, from what I've read it is very hard to do) or get stuck in a higher CG version.
3. The beginner's guide is cool, but I haven't seen any tutorials on installing a specific rom (in my case ICS) so, I'd appreciate some pointers here, if possible
Thanks in advance! =)

I have a defy+, so i have 2.3.6 on it. But you don't need to flash any new firmware to get ICS or MIUI, since they both have froyo builds. CG version only changes when you flash full SBF, not when installing zips and custom ROMs. So you shouldn't worry about getting stuck on a higher CG.
So what you need of course is a rooted phone , the SndInitDefy_2.0.apk (to install custom recovery and bootmenu because of locked bootloader), install the latest bootmenu (don't mind installing the old one although it might work on froyo). And there you're ready to flash! (to enter custom recovery on your defy, reboot your phone and press the volume down key when you see the blue led) I assume you know how to use the custom recovery, so I won't go into detail on that.
Since I haven't flashed any froyo ICS builds before, I don't dare to tell you how to myself! So just head over to the main CM9 ICS thread You'll find a guide in the first post. Nevermind, i'll just quote it here:

How to flash ICS (Defy Builds)
1:Head Over To Stable recovery
2:Wipe Data
3:Install Zip from SD Card
4:Select ICS(Defy) .zip
5:Flash
6:Flash CM7 Kernel
7:Clear Cache and Dalvik Cache
First Boot will take some time...

You need to flash Google Apps seperately through recovery. You should find the files and links needed in the thread linked above. Know the difference between the Defy+ builds (with gingerbread [gb] kernel), and the Defy builds with froyo kernel.
Please note that ICS for defy is still in it's early stages and you might experience bugs. But most people still think it's worth it! xD Sorry if I made it too detailed for you, but then others can make use of it too! Oh, I hope I haven't said wrong that will soft brick your phone! Flashing the wrong kernel always gives me bootloader error! Anyway bricking really isn't that scary (only the first time i can confirm) It's good to have an SBF with RSDLite and Drivers installed on your PC just in case
Oh! And then If you want MIUI, just do the normal wipes and flash the ROM. Let me recommend MIUI Pikachu edition by TweetyPeety, the best MIUI ROM out there! It even has the touch based AROMA installer in recovery where you can customize the installation!
I was wandering if there is any advantage in flashing a newer kernel (either CM9 kernel or a GB full SBF) on defy if I'm using CM7/CM9/MIUI
Also, I tried CM9 without flashing the kernel, and it works, so I can't figure what difference would that step make. How does changing the default kernel affect the use of custom roms? Any hit in performance/usability? Would I have to use Defy+ roms if I flash CM9 kernel?

I think you shouldn't flash new kernel for CM9 since it is in alpha
it is better to keep on CM7.1 and wait until a stable version from CM9 (unless you are a real HW or SW developer)
Hi everyone,
I was trying to post this in another thread but I'm unable to post in the Development sector.
I have a Motorola Defy+ running the Android 2.3.5, I've tested the following ROM's:
CM9 by quarx
CM9 by Epsylon
Both runs just fine, but I was thinking this weekend to test another rom's to have new experiences and found out about the MIUI, which seens to be a very good rom.
But the fact is that I'm facing some troubles trying to run this rom.
Everytime I try to apply it, the Recovery says to me that the install went ok, but once I reboot the phone, I got stuck in the Motorola Bootloader screen, and I have to flash a stock SBF again.
I've tried the STABLE (GB) and the BETA (ICS), both got the same problem.
Different versions of 2ndinit (1.4, 2.0, 2.3).
Does anyone know why I'm having this problems?
I would appreciate any help.
Best regards,
AFAIK, MIUI requires Froyo kernel and Defy+ has GB kernel.

MIUI is a froyo based ROM.
Downgrade to froyo if you need to flash it..

I'm new to this forum but have got solutions for many of my questions from here. I own a Motorola defy MB525 (SOC Camera), tried to fiddle around with it in order to install custom ROM's and eventually screwed up in the process .After my failed attempts, was able to somehow get a working Indian Motorola Froyo SBF and fix my phone, which was otherwise not booting, that was a small victory . In the meanwhile, had been to Motorola Service Center to replace my broken glass. Got that replaced, however I wondered if the service center could somehow update it with official Defy+ ROM and that's when I screwed up completely.
They updated it with official 2.3.6 Defy+ ROM and now my Camera module is dead , battery lasts hardly for 5-6 hrs on stand by :crying: , which would otherwise last for 2 days on foryo and my phone model shows MB526. I wouldn't worry about the camera right now, but I want my battery last for a day atleast
Is there a way I can go back to my original froyo ROM which I doubt would be possible
Can someone help me on this ? any patch that I could update for battery issues? anything at all !
Thanks in advance.
Have you tried flashing the original SBF with RSD Lite?
RSD Lite is an App used by Motorola to Flash Smartphones. It can revive mismatched Nandroid/Fixed SBFs, Black Screens, failed flashes etc.
Even though is really, really hard to completely brick a Defy, it is possible; a corrupted SBF, power failure on a critical part of the formatting, or some weird issues while creating partitions can lead to a Bricked Defy. If you can, always flash your Defy from a laptop so the power is not an issue, use good cables, and be sure the PC doesn’t go to sleep when is not being used.
Also, when flashing SBFs, is normally advised to put your SBF in your PC Root directory (C:/ ) or whatever it is in your PC and rename it to a short name like Defy.sbf, why? Because sometimes the Path name is just too long and RSD Lite throws errors not allowing the phone to be Flashed.

Yes, I have tried the same Froyo SBF that I tried to flash before using RSD Lite, but it didn't succeed this time. Later I tried many Defy+ ROM's aswell, nothing worked ... put a lot of effort to do all that and got fed up. Went back to the service center and they re-flashed it with their Defy+ ROM using RSD Netconnect which is something they use to flash the ROM's. May be this works a bit differently. It worked this time... now I'm stuck with this ROM, which drains my battery like anything and rendered my camera dead.
Well...thanks anywazz will try the steps suggested by the other mate...

Dude I went from the steps in which u are currently stuck.
My defy 525 was not booting hence i went to authorized service center, Vashi, Navi Mumbai & Engineer over there has flashed defy plus rom on my mb 525. My camera was dead for 2 months. Now you are on BL7. Talk enough here are the steps...
Step 1:- Root your Defy, link is as below for BL7 ROOTING..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1595013
Step 2 :- Flash any 2nd Boot Defy Custom Rom ( Quarks (cm10) / Epsys (cm 9 & cm7 ) / Kayants( cm10)
By the way I use Epsy 2nd boot for CM7**( ONLY WIFI IS NOT WORKING OTHERWISE ITS STABLE ROM )
Use 26112012 rom
Thats the only way to your defy to use with camera. ** Camera will work only on 2nd boot rom
In case additional help is required then let me know..

Bro, Thanks a lot I see a ray of hope again
...I was able to root my device, somehow I was unable to flash the first file mentioned on link you gave but was able to flash the second one, still I could see that the device was rooted inspite of that.
Now, please help me with detailed instructions on how to go about flashing the new ROM with some youtube Video references will also help. Also what about the battery life ? have you been able to get a decent battery life after flashing the new ROM ? and will I be able to flash ROM's meant for MB525 or should I choose only ones meant for MB526 ? If so, then will it still drain my battery bcoz it will contain a GB kernel ? Will my device ever be same again?
Also, you have mentioned that ur wifi isn't working on the ROM that you are running, is it specific to that ROM ?
Plz dnt mind, I have asked too many questions.. I'm not well versed with all this....still learning from my mistakes.
Solved !

hi,
im very fresh with all the ROMs things, and my english is not so well, i hope someone can help me.
i got Defy (not +) with CM10 on it.
it works very slow, and everyone told me its because of the ROM.
i want to change the ROM and i read that CM7.2 is the most stable for Defy.
now, my question is: How do i do that? please provide as many details as possible i dont know nothing!!
well i do know that my Defy is Rooted (if thats how you say that)
thank you very much im lost
Good Idea is to start reading here:

and

I started few weeks ago on the same stage....
format from EXT4 to EXT3 in bootmenu (the one u have while jb is installed)
just start it from stock sbf..more conformed to be clean i guess..:silly:
You can wipe all from stock recovery, then reboot and flash cm7.zip
