XDA ROCKS!!!
The speed is limited by the technology... you can't get 10Mbps on 2G, because what you have to do is connect 100 antennas to the phone, and each one with 2G speed... you can't have 3G speeds on 2G!! That just means you are on 3G, but phone says 3G
For example, here, at home, I get 1 kbps speed, because of low signal, and no script can make the signal better...
To put it simple: it is like putting our phone on 1GHz, considering edge is an overclocked gprs it's like fooling a server to send data at 2x the speed it is capable of, without extra hardware... it is just placebo, or some stupid indian providers that need hacks to provide maximum speed (like Vodafone RO was for a few years, it had support for HSDPA, but no more than 30 KB/s)

u dont understand it...
3g on 2g in india means that suppose u pay 2$ to get 2g speed internet(i.e edge or gprs)... but when u put ur phone in wcdma mode only then edge or gprs will not be available and server will be forced to provide internet through HSPA...
so what that means is.. if server is loopholed then u might even be getting 3g speeds which u didnt pay for...
To use free 3g on 2g we need a 2g sim or we have to convert it to 3g?

this technique doesn't work with every provider eg. this works with bsnl, !dea, vodafone etc...but doesn't work on Airtel...

Sorry but there is a simpler and effective way try it just press *#*#4636#*#* and select network mode as wcdma only.

Hello u can still get 3g speed in Chennai,I still get it.all you have to do is after running the script mentioned in this thread reboot ur phone and dial *#*#4636#*#* and change the preferred network from wcdma preferred (or whatever its) to wcdma only and now you are on 3g, the signal bar will change from edge to hsdpa9.

Just to say I was using this trick on Aircel (98bucks aprox 2$) for unlimited usage @3.6mbps but now they've fixed the bug n it no longer work however just like we get a new gf after ditching the previous one I found Airtel now! !185bucks (4.4$) 5gigs @7.2mbps! !it works in Chennai! !

Hi there,
Just bought this a few days ago and playing with it. Got the 16key Tmobile UK edition.
I have tried to use it as a modem for my laptop, but the speeds I am getting are 270kbps. I was expecting it to be quite a lot faster?
This is with a 3G icon at the top which I assume means that it is connected via UMTS.
Is this the speed I should be expecting? I am on the 8th floor of my building but have got 3 bars of reception (not sure if that is related or not).
What kind of speeds should I be expecting? on both UMTS or HSDPA?
I am with T-Mobile.
Thanks
you'll geh an H-icon when connected via HSDPA, which is faster than 3G.
yup... but what speeds should i be expecting?
is 270 low for 3g?

Hmmm, I believe that ~46Kbytes/sec is fastest speed with 3G (386kbits). With HSDPA (3,5G) you can have faster connections e.g 2Mbits, even upto 3,5Mbits if network supports its.
Edit // Ps. Mobile operator may require that HSDPA has to be ordered as "value addad service" so it may cost more than basic 3G connection (usually its not included to the basic contract)
This might help...

ahh cool thanks... so 270 aint that bad i guess...
i'll test out my speed at work where im getting hsdpa showing up see how that shows
I live in Leeds (UK), and have HSDPA service mostly when I connect to the web. I downloaded a 4mb file on it last night and it took just under a minute to complete. I was pretty impressed. You don't need WiFi on a touch dual when you can download at these speeds and when you have an (almost) unlimited data plan
Can't wait when Firefly or Opera 9.5 comes out.

Hello everyone.
I'm from Bombay, India.
Currently I'm using Vodafone EDGE and the download speed is 30kbps and upload 20kbps. Well I find it too slow.
I wanted to know if any there is any 3G user in India.
Need some reviews on BSNL/MTNL 3G and what other service providers for fast connection.
Does anybody know when other service providers are coming out with 3G service in India?
Thank you

I'm coming to Delhi at the beginning of December and would love to be able to pick up an Airtel SIM with 3G at the airport. Hopefully it is available in Delhi by then!
Hello,
I'm from Karnataka.
Activated 3G from bsnl. 4200rs for 6months unlimited upto 7.2mbps speed. Brought data card from ebay instead from bsnl.
Its running very well here. Getting upto 4mbps and may get more sometimes.
I'm able download 1.5gb in hour. Today morning I have downloaded COD Black Ops and playing now.
However, it depends upon tower and signal. Now I'm getting 100kbps, no idea whats wrong. Should check tomorrow morning.
Thanks...

Hey nice to see your name. My name is also same!
I too got 3g from bsnl but since yesterday night ( Saturday ) I'm getting upto 256kbits/s only. Don't know whats wrong. I have tried using my HTC phones but same problem.
In 1 days I had downloaded 8 gb game but I'm guessing is it because after 8 gb the speed comes down to 256kbps.
Hope it isn't or else I have lost my hopes on 3g.
p.s I have 4200rs unlimited

hello friends
today i bought a new bsnl prepaid 3g sim and its downloading speed is much much better than docomo.
I don't think this was working before the update, but now u can enter the
*#*#4636#*#* command and select WCDMA only to stay on 3/3.5g.
And before anyone asks
WCDMA only means 3g and 3.5g which means if your signal is strong enough, HSPA+/4g
Im just curious where do u enter that code?

in that case, shouldn't it be WCDMA Preferred?.... if you end up in a EDGE... only area...?
also... I thought GSM Auto PRL.... was the best option...

Fair warning... this move will impact your battery life heavily.
gsm auto prl can save u a bit of battery life but usually prefers edge if the 3g signal isn't strong enough.
Wcdma only wont allow for a 3g to edge fluctuation. It will force 3g. Problem is, if your in an area with poor coverage it'll be either 3g or nothing and you may find yourself with no connection at all since the phone wont bring u to edge.
Wcdma preffered is like the opposite of gsm auto prl. It will prefer 3g.

Thanks sheek, I guess my best bet would be to good with WCDMA preferred, since reception is shaky in my area...
I think this might be better since it will waste less energy capturing a weak edge signal in a weak area.
working so far. ill report bat life in due time. i cant see how it would really affect it. i hate when my g2 hits edge. if by not using it because of edge saves battery then im fine with a dying battery. i have spares and extended bats anyway

Yup. That's exactly what I do too.
I have a friend who lives in Philly; one of the best tmobile footprints exist in this city. Wcdma only and wcdma prefer netted no gains or losses except when he crossed and passed Camden new jersey.
Or search "radioinfo" in the market and get the app named network that pops up in the search.

That's not the only difference between the modes.
WCDMA Only will only lock in the 3G signals and switch over if there is no more signal for 3G reception.
-Only use this if you're in a metropolitan area or are covered in abundant 3G signals.
WCDMA Preferred will drain more battery, the reason being that it'll scan the airwaves constantly in search of better 3G signals. You are right about it having a wider 3G signal threshold.
-Use this if you're in a 3G abundant city but not where if you're noticing frequently 3G to E switching as it'll adversely kill your battery.
GSM Auto PRL will shrink the threshold for 3G signals as well as less frequent scans for better signal. Generally E to 3G/H transitions happens on 1.5 to 2 bars of 3G signal, but the phone will remain on 3G unless there is an EDGE signal that is better and thus may provide better data transfer speeds or if 3G/H signal is gone.
-Benefits for battery life but not great when better signal is a necessary. Would not recommend this mode if signal is scattered.
As you can tell from my city in my sig, I have a choice between the three, I went with GSM Auto PRL due to battery life being of importance to me as I'm not necessarily next to a tap in 8 hour gaps.
Hope this helps better than my original post.

I have never even touched an HSPA+ connection and I live in an area where it's apparently abundant.
Switched SIMs for a newer one and still nothing. I was told to wait for the 2nd OTA that's coming out by the 8th (And I'm still calling BS on that)
Why in the hell would they push out 2 different OTA's in 1 week for a single device?
I'm hesitant to do this because I don't know if it is my phone being flakey or the actual area. According to TMobile's data coverage website I am in the middle of a massive solid high speed zone... but I constantly flake to Edge.
I don't want to change this setting and it cut out on me entirely, that it may be the actual area. But I guess all I can do is try
The one thing I've noticed about the phone is that signal drops when holding it to use the keyboard, if this information's any help.
I found I was hemhoragging battery at some point with 50% no signal according to cell standby. But it wasn't caused by selecting WCDMA only - i am bathed in hspa/umta. Instead I turned on airplane mode while plugged in, waited a bit, then off, then unplugged. Then restarted phone to recovery (clockwork), wiped battery stats, and restarted. Running fine now.
Guys i've tried everything, APN settings, Build.prop file mods etc ...
but my download speed remains at 44-45 kb/sec!!!
someone please help, I've tried posting this in the rom thread too ...

I'm really quite late on this one I know so apologises for that!
Three only have a 3G network. They currently share Orange's 2G signal as a backup. Recently, they started turning off that 2G backup in areas they thought their own 3G was good enough, so, if you disable 3G and you're in one of those areas then you will get no signal at all. Maybe Three weren't the best network to choose if you only wanted to use 2G!
