Hello all,
I was wondering why arc's developers are only working on custom roms which require custom kernels... I am not a rom developer, I am only java developer with knowledges about the android development system. That's why I wanted to tell you this question. We have GB roms based on stock 2.3.4 which run very well with stock kernel. Like aniking or TEAM rom. Is it about the lack of recovery in the stock kernel? Or the lack of performance in the ICS stock kernel? I can't unlock my bootloader (Carrier branded) and I don't want to unlock it by tespoint for now.
Thank you for your replies
About the possible mistakes, I'm French, sorry for that.

I've experienced the stock kernel as heavy on the battery. Replacing it with CWM stock kernel or other increases the battery time, atleast that's why I rather stick to the custom roms and kernels.
Customs kernels have more battery drain than stock so prefer them if you are heavy user I think you confused..the customs have other benefits.

I agree, custom kernels have bigger battery drain than stock in most of the cases. But that's not my question : Why there's no ICS roms that run on stock ics kernel? I know the benefits of custom kernels, I used them with my previous X8. But for now, I can't unlock my bootloader.

i been using doomkernel and haven't seen a significant battery drain in compared with stock. or maybe the difference is just not far apart. used custom kernel just so i could oc that slow 1ghz

Any ICS ROM based on stock firmware will run on stock kernel. Arconium ICS works fine on a stock kernel. However we need the recovery to flash zip files and make backups.

I just flashed my G2 with this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211143
I'm rooted S-Off, and I just came from bone stock factory 2.2.
I overclocked my phone using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=813681
And all worked fine until I flashed the 2.3 ROM.
I adb pushed both .ko files to test them out, and I keep getting this error in my terminal emulator: "insmod: init_module '/data/local/vision_oc.ko' failed (Exec format error)" I'm running the command as su, obviously. I don't see why flashing a new ROM would effect my ability to overclock without replacing the stock kernels...
You're trying to put a kernel on there made for the 2.2 ROM.
You're running a 2.3 ROM. Right now there are no custom kernels to overclock that ROM that don't also break other things on the phone.
If you want 2.3.4+ and overclocking, look into one of the other custom ROMs made from AOSP (like CM7) that come with custom overclockable kernels from the start, or have overclockable kernels available for them.
So is CM7 stable for the G2? Meaning that everything works (WiFi, GPS, video playback, etc.)?
Because right now this bone stock 2.3 ROM I'm running is seamless, I'm not really a tinkerer, I just want things to work.

CM7 is extremely stable. Its been in a stable state for a long long long time. And has more features than stock with better performance and battery use. I flash nightlies and its more stable than some ROMs out there.
Just make a nandroid backup of your current ROM. You can always go back...
What about g-lite?

+1 for glite. Pretty much stock with an Oc daemon. I love the awesome battery life as well

yea I've been meaning to try it got the stock prerooted now, just have to get tired of it lol.
you can use setcpu and set 8X55 can use 1ghz
You can also use cm7 with the stock kernel and OC your phone to 1ghz easily.
Cm7 is very stable btw - ive found nothing which is not working.

Hey gang.
I'm waiting on my DZ arriving, looks like tomorrow now, and I have tried many roms with my current phone but I always end up going back to sense as I like it. The more I read about the DZ and the different roms, the more I'm thinking that I might not bother with roms and keep the stock.
Battery life is important to me however and the saving grace on my current phone has been setcpu. Obviously I'd need to root the DZ it to use it. I'm not too bothered with overclocking it really, however I do like to underclock it when the screen is off etc.
My question is, I know that you can only overclock on some kernels/roms that support it. But is it the same case with underclocking it? Or should I be able to underclock fine on stock?
Of course u need root. But u can use the stock rom with root than flash it with a kernel that u can under/overclock.

Can you recommend a kernel that will work ok with stock then?
A custom kernel may have different or more underclock stepping choices, but the stock kernel should underclock just fine once you are rooted.
Are DZ's shipping with Gingerbread nowadays? Kernel is dependent on Sense versus AOSP, and also Froyo versus Gingerbread. Godspeed kernel worked fine when I was on the DZ stock Froyo ROM.

Just use Search type in "Kernel" than u get all kernel Threads. I tried many kernels but now im using ILWT Kernel CM7 1.7.0 =)

It hasn't arrived yet, it's advertised as Froyo but we'll find out in the next few days.
As long as the stock kernel underclocks fine, as I said, I don't care about overclocking. If it doesn't work right then I'll get to custom romming it.
Hi there, just want to begin by saying how amazing this community is. I'm new to whole Android scene (just came over from iOS) but what a welcome it has been! I'm blown away by the amount of ways you can customize your Nexus 7, really puts the iPad to shame
So I've rooted my Nexus 7 and am now hoping to install a custom kernel...however I have quite a few questions pertaining to this procedure.
1) How do I install a custom kernel (ie Trinity)?
2) I'm looking to improve battery life without compromising performance, what kernel would you recommend for this?
3) Can I still get OTA if I have a custom kernel?
4) Can I revert back to stock kernel and if so, how do I do this?
Sorry to come across as a newb, I saw a lot of helpful threads on custom ROMs however I found the stuff on kernels a bit daunting...Hopefully this thread will be helpful for others as well
Thanks again everyone.

1. just flash it in recovery, dont wipe a thing.
2. trinity
3. kernels dont have anything to do with ota. if its still enabled in your rom then yes.
4. either fastboot flash a stock boot.img or just reflash your rom without wiping anything.
5.
Worth noting that when a new rom is installed it installs its own kernel so you'll have to reflash your kernel.
I also recommend faux for good battery life. Both that and Trinity are good.

If i dont want to personalize a lot (stock is enough for me) but i want fastest/stable/ good battery like variant?
Ive stayed on stock, no real need for custom roms. Plus you can get ota updates like 4.2
You can flash 4.2 updates, thats not a big deal
Stock rooted FTW!
Edit: Flashing a cheeky over clocking kernel doesn't hurt either.

So are the locked bl folks like myself left behind in the long-term? What needs to happen for there to be more SS ROM development??

Supposedly, there's a way to make every ROM SS compatible. I think it has to do with removing the boot.img, but I'm sure there's more it than that. I've seen people complain about there being no SS ROMs, then someone mentions this solution, but nobody takes action. Honestly, it's going to be up to someone that has a locked down device to start putting out these SS compatible ROMs.
Then, you will run into kernel issues like we used to run into on the older SS ROMs. Let's say you want CM10.2 that is 4.3 based. Your stock ROM is 4.1.2, so you'll run into kernel issues like an inop camera, WiFi, etc. Honestly, your best bet is to find one of the 2 SS compatible stock ROMs that are the same kernel as you and use Xposed to modify it. There's someone on DroidRzr that used Xposed on his X with a stock ROM and he has been able to load up the custom CM themes.

Yeah... It can't be that hard - all the other motos have SS CMs out. Just gotta have someone with the knowledge and need/want to make it happen

You'd probably have to cook up a kexec kernel to get the newer ROMs functioning properly...
