Rooted my Defy, need help - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted my defy and using Titanium backup I stupidly deleted the Gtalk app thinking it was safe , and now i get a gapps.com error on bootup, but worse the Market now longer works! I have the gtalk.apk which I downloaded from here but because my defy is on 2.1 it has no app installer, so I need a way to get AppInstaller from somewhere other than the market. We do have a spare samsung phone running 2.2 (GT-15500) that does have the app installer but because its not yet rooted I cant move it to SD!Any ideas where I can download the app installer from?
Cheers

Google it. And make sure next time you start playing with your phone as root, do make a backup.

Sorted it now. I put a stock 2.2.2 ROM on it with RDSLite software, andf re-rooted it. Works fine now.

(Q) Phone says its rooted but its not...

Edit : just checked. My phone is running the newest updated but im gonna try to unroot and reroot one more time even though I already tried and it could not unroot.
So I went to install the new update via stock recovery and it seemed to work. I go check system settings and its still showing 2.3.2 and not the newest one. I go to try and root and it says everything works and my phone is rooted. Thing is there is no super user app that appeared on my last droid 2. What's the issue?

Try it again and use the 1 click root for 2.3.20 from here http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/droid-2-discussion/5321-2-3-20-1-click-root.html

It might be that you just lost the app and just need to get it off the Market.

Yeah, I saw it was rooted and just went to market and got Superuser app and installed, I have root. I don't know why it did not show the superuser app even thought it said the apk was transfered.
Mine did the same. After I rooted using the one click method, it said it was a sucess. Tried to use Root Explorer, and it said failed getting superuser permission. Checke my SD card, and there was no Superuser.apk there. I copied it to the SD card from the one click directory, and it was sucessful. When trying to use Titanium Backup, had trouble with Busybox. Titanium downloaded a new Busybox, and all is now well.

[Q] D2 no longer rooted?

Ok so I had rooted my D2 a few days ago and had been looking into backup/recovery apps. Now however it seems as if my phone is no longer rooted. Is this possible? I thought I had read another thread where someone else was having this problem but was unable to find it. I tried to open up my superuser app and titanium backup app, but both ended in a failure and asked if my phone was rooted. Thanks in advance for anyone's help with this!
Also, just noticed that my superuser app isn't working correctly. The widget changed from being labeled "superuser" to "superuser permissions". I had assumed that this was after my phone had updated some other applications, however the superuser app won't turn on, it just gives me a black screen. When I tried to update through the market it said "Package file was not signed correctly". I'm unable to find the app on my phone so I can delete and try to download it again fresh. Thanks again for any advice anyone has!

Yeah. Phones can unroot themselves. This usually happens when the phone updates itself. Don't stress though... just root your phone again.
So, then with the superuser permissions app that I found on my phone...if I were to re-root my D2 with a different method of rooting vs the first way, would I be able to uninstall that superuser permissions app if I wanted? Thanks for such a quick response!

What was your first method. I would just use z4root. Also, did you install a custom rom? If so maybe reflash the rom after you are rooted again.

I had used the 1-2-3 step for rooting as my husband had suggested that. I have z4root installed now but haven't done anything yet. My husband had suggested I get some back-up apps for my phones system and also one for my apps in case I kill my phone. Will the droid 2 bootstrap back-up/restore my original phone system in case I do mess it up?

Google maps wont update

latest incrediblyreengineered rom.
I've tried to update it a few times to the newest version via market, but once it starts to install the new version it says the file is not digitally signed.
Ideas?
The version I have on my phone works, but is indeed an older version, and I'd like the new one.
Thanks.

Have you tried uninstalling the one that is on your phone first, rebooting, and trying to download the latest?
I'll try that again today and report back.
I have this issue too, but I have no option to uninstall. I am running the aura ROM 1.2.1.3

[Q] help with cm7

i finished rooting my friends Droid X. after i flashed CM7 for GB. i used bootstrap for droid x to get into recovery but now im stuck at the M logo. i did a battery pull and now im still stuck at the M logo. any suggestions?
If you used bootstrap on CM7 you need to SBF back to 602 and reinstall CM7. You're not supposed to use bootstrap in CM7, you use ROM manager that installs with CM7. Make sure to use the DroidX 2nd Init version.

Hey thanks a lot for your response! but how do i SBF back to 602? im new to droid X since i have a tbolt, and even on my tbolt, all i knew how to do was root and flash my 1 rom i put on it so im still kind of a noob. sorry =/
Nevermind, i researched on sbfing the phone back to 602 and it worked wonders.
Ok so now i have a new issue. before flashing CM7, i backed up my stock+root. after flashing CM7, i needed to access old text from the phone being stock so i tried to do a nandroid recover. however when its restoring "data" somewhere in the middle it always freezes on the same file. is there a way to get passed this? thanks for any reply.
Which recovery are you using when in cm7? I don't believe that a backup made in 2.5.0.7 is compatible with recovery 4.0.0.5. Try restoring the older recovery version in Rom Manager then boot into the older recovery through Rom Manager and see if you can restore the nandroid.
I'm wondering if its having problems because the old text messages are through moto's text app and the blur framework is not in CM7. Like when i tried restoring my backup assistant to retrieve my contacts. Luckily i could log onto VZW backup assistant and export my last backup of contacts.

I don't have the answer but I think the question is "how can I browse the contents of my nandroid backup on my workstation?"

Well in theory that may cause an issue, but the op said he's trying to restore a nandroid to go back to stock and get a text, not access a text made in blur from CM7.
Even if that were the case I would have a hard time thinking the blur messenger app would cause an issue, since one can use a 3rd party sms app on any rom.
Btw, I would say the backup assistant issue you had isn't really related since vzw backup assistant is a blur bloatware app, and isn't available on the market... I personally use google to back my contacts up because it works on ANY android phone.

[Q] Rooted?

To start of, I'm new to this forum so excuse me if i ask something stupid.
Yesterday I updated my U8800 from stock Froyo to B526. I did all the steps like in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420728. Now i just don't know if my phone is really rooted, because i still can't erase the bundled apps. I could install the recovery but the bundled apps i cant get rid off. I installed Remount and File Expert, but i just can't remove the apk's. So how can i check if my phone is actually rooted and how can i get rid of bundled apps. Also because i want to install a new version of Swype.
download root checker basic from market.
Sent from my U8800 using Tapatalk 2
Allright thanks! I downloaded it and ran it and it says I have root access, but i still can't get rid of all the bundled apps! Are there other ways to get rid of Swype and Facebook and Twitter etc?
Install superuser app from market.
