Hey XDA.
I was wondering if any of you guys could help me sort out an issue I've been having with youtube.
I have a 12Mb/s connection through AT&T U-verse and I can't even load a 720p youtube video without lag.
This only happens with youtube because I can play HD videos on Vimeo with no problems whatsoever and can download torrents at 1 megabyte a second.
Youtube speed test says my average download speed is only 2.1 Megabits a second, nowhere near my 12 megabit connection.
Is this an AT&T issue or is it a youtube issue?
What can I do to help stop this?
Screenshot attached.
could be anything
Hi there your drop in speed could be a number of from youtube usage(other people), open background applications like facebook gmail syncing etc i suggest turning all that off then try using youtube again other than that alot of people on the yt review section are saying its only with the latest updates so if you have an old backup try restoring that and see if it makes a difference again im no expert but some useful tips i hope ive given you
Also forgot to mention try wiping your cache aswell it gets pretty full once a while depends on yt usage
You also have to remember that ATT shares its data connection with your TV (FAIL) so if you are watching tv or having the DVR record anything your speed will do down... That is why i will NEVER EVER get ATT because i hate the fact that they steal bandwidth from other devices... So your best bet with the youtube is to not be doing anything else on the TV or other computers... Or depending on your area you can switch to cable INET and TV as you WILL NEVER have that issue!!!

Actually, I already had that in mind. I tested even with all tv receivers disconnected.

Hi all,
Wonder if anyone has experienced this. My Touch HD (stock Orange ROM) is really jerky when playing Youtube videos through the client over Wifi, but fine over a 3g connection..
The Wifi connection is plenty fast enough, the Mrs has an iPhone, which works fine.
Anyone got any idea what I can check? I've made sure everything is turned off.. bluetooth etc..
stuck!
thanks
Mark
Hi, easy one this :0) Go to the settings tab select communications, in the bottom right tap settings, then tap wireless lan. Once there select the power mode tab then move slide all the way to the left for best performance. Always works for me, hope it does for you :0)
Sadly not mate, already tried that!
OK so this is REALLY weird. If I have nothing else downloading at home, and the youtube player is downloading it's jerky.
If I start a download going on my laptop (usenet - canes my connection) then what HAS buffered on my Touch HD plays fine. The moment I stop the download, it starts to be jerky again.
Almost seems like the throughput to the phone is killing it somehow, weird! have tried all sorts of settings on my router, but no dice.
Really stuck as to what to try next :/
Must admit until buffering is complete, I too get slightly jerky playback. Although this has always been the case with every Windows Mobile device I've had. Sorry I can't help you anymore m8
:0( Good luck with it.
Background downloading slows the device down, so it cant play the video smoothly. Go to youtube app settings and turn video playback quality to fast download. That helps, but the quality is awful.
I use the high quality, and just wait the video to finish downloading.
It's not just the fact that it's downloading in the background because it's doing that over 3g but plays fine, it's something specific to Wifi.
It's also not just slightly jerky, it's REALLY bad.
I mean.. I've watched plenty of reviews of this device where they've streamed youtube over wifiand it.screen fine..
I wonder if upgrading the radio would help? or is the wifi stuff done by the rom?
Worth a try, my HD works much better with new radio 1.10.25.25 + Custom rom Black Pearl 1.7 lite.
will have to give that a try then. The stock Orange rom is good apart from that but a bit slow.
Just finding picking one to flash to a touch daunting, too much choice!
OK, so I downloaded and flashed to panosha Black Pearl v2.1 HD ROM.
Works fine, is VERY nice and fast Also updated my radio version to 1.12.25.16 but the Youtube thing is still there!!!
I'm going to try it on someone else's wifi connection as soon as I can, but for now, anyone got a clue?!?
OK, I've tried three different roms, and even tried two other wifi networks- same problem.
The device is generally slower when connected to a wifi network, not just youtube. I guess it's just more noticeable when playing YT videos.
Really lost now ;(
Could be that once you are connected on WIFI the youtube player automatically selects the best quality video for you to view, increasing system requirements.
At the same time as trying to view the higher quality video the WIFI also uses a fair bit of CPU power. Try downloading a file on WIFI with everything else closed and you'll notice your device is a lot less responsive until the download is completed.
Only a guess though.
Well of course, but you'd expect a device of this spec to be able to play it without stuttering all over the shop whilst nothing else is loaded...
Hi there = I've got the same bleedin problem!
I am on orange payg 3g, Dutty 2.1 extreme rom.
I never had the problem with the original (orange) total pants rom, but I've also updated the radio to 1.12 so perhaps it's an issue with the radio. Have you tried 1.13 the latest?
It's nowt to do with the youtube settings for sure, it's most definitely wi-fi related. I've noted the i-player mobile app is wildly out of sync on the audio too and never used to be that bad.
If anyone has any ideas or tweaks please let us know. thanks!
Maybe its because when you connect to wifi network it says that rx speed is 1mbps (it should be faster) and the real download speed is around 30 kb per second and i think that that is not enough for playing realtime high quality videos (needs buffering more often). When you set option to best performance that will just increase your transmit power and you will get better reception (but the speed still remains). Maybe that is the problem. Any solution on how to increase the RX speed?
Hi there, i am from singapore. I am also experiencing the same problem with the youtube client from the stock rom. i got mine from starhub! the video is jerky! need help!!
hi guys sorry if im being a bit dumb but why is it slower than any other phone like my mate e71 which steams youtube clips from 3g without buffering, but my xperia is buffering about ervery 5 secs so you cant watch your cilps.it works fine in wifi could anyone help me thanks
Are you sure u're connected to your 3G network?
why is youtube so slow on 3g???
yep browsing seems to quick its just too slow steaming video any thoughts is there a fix iv tryed the cabs that are posted this forum plese help
what youtube program ?
I have 3 apart from playing them directly in opera
iv tryed a few different ones
iv tryed all from X1 programs, panels, tweaks, fixes [COLLECTION]
Tweaks which are posted on the fourum, they all work gr8 on wifi but all too slow on 3g.
I think you are jusing the htc youtube app.. try to change the quality from high to low this should work..
tryed it mate still really slow what have you installed on yours and does it buffer or play smooth?
I've been meaning to address this as well. Whne i connect using 3g, for any form of a connection(youtube or interent in general) I have a slower connection than i do when on hspda. Any ideas why this may be?
well probably cause the 3g icon is plain umts, and hspda is way faster than regular umts, more than double the speed sometimes, its more like 3.5g so when theres an H instead of an 3G you should get blazing speeds.
on H or 3g its never been at blazing speeds its good enough to brows on the net for but not for youtube its way too slow
Anyone else tried the new Google Movies in the marketplace yet?
I gave it a go last night just to see how well it streamed. I have the Wi-Fi only Xoom and tethered it through my G2 on T-Mobiles HSPA Network.
Overall the experience was kind of sour. The movie played for about 30 mins before it stopped to "buffer." The bigger problem was audio and video was WAYYY off after about 36 minute mark. It was a good 10 secs apart at some points. Took it home on my wireless network just to make sure the T-mobile network wasn't the problem and i had the same problem there!
Anyone else experience the same problem?
Edit:Streaming from my computer was flawless though. It seems to the same problem most video players experience when playing movies on the xoom.
I dont even know where to find the movies. I can see them on the site, but where do I find them on my XOOM?
market.android.com in the browser
when streaming youtube videos it cant keep up in hd and sometimes it cant even keep up in hq. on speedtest i get good speeds 2.5megabytes down 0.5 up and can easily stream 1080p off my laptop. just running stock unrooted android. any help would be appreciated
thanks matt
It's server thing on googles end most likely. Even on PC it keeps loading and stopping for a month now. I get 30 down 10 up.

Try different videos / different video apps, like Netflix or something. I doubt it's an issue with the phone.
Hey guys!
Bought my OUYA roughly a week ago. I can say I'm not certainly happy with it. The only reason I got it was to stream movies and TV shows via XBMC so I could ditch my huge and noisy tower PC.
But oh, the wifi reception is SO utterly terrible, it can't even handle that task! Videos buffer for ages and when they do play, it starts to buffer it again in like five seconds. I got to watch one Friends episode with it this whole time. The PC runs on the same network and plays everything, even full HD, perfectly! I'm planning on selling my OUYA forward and getting something with... well the ability to stream stuff. Enthernet connection would be too hard since the router is so far away and I hate wires and an enthernet bridge costs a fifth of the price of OUYA.
And it's not just XBMC, everything, I mean everything is slow(network wise). Browser takes its time to load pages and don't get me started on the download speed...
So anyone else having this? I've tried factory reset and everything, but it just doesn't seem to do anything.
I have not had any problems with the wifi or network. I would make sure your wifi is properly configured before pointing to the ouya. I suggest downloading an app or program that allows you to look at all of the wifi signals in your area. A lot of times, bad wifi reception is caused by congestion on a particular channel. I am assuming you are running on 2.4ghz since you did not provide much information to help you. If you are on 2.4ghz, there are a lot of things that run on this frequency so I would do research to make sure other sources are not causing bad wifi reception. I suggest downloading Wifi Analyzer on android to determine the strength of your signal near the ouya also. Google "bad wifi connection" and you will get many ways to improve your wifi signal. If you already did everything you can to rule out other factors, then it is possible your ouya is faulty. I would suggest contacting technical support and getting a replacement. My ouya runs perfectly. It streams 1080p from my NAS. You never told us where you are streaming from. It would make sense to run a diagnostic check on your source too.
Wifi reception/speed is a pretty common complaint. So far there isn't really a solution. I've been running cm10 for a bit over a week and it seems wifi performance has improved but for me the problem is sporadic so it's hard to say whether it's really gone or not....of course cm10 isn't without it's own problems.
I think this last firmware update just ruined WiFi performance. I was able to run 1080p movies over WiFi network before updating...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
This is actually a major complaint.
I think it could be a few things.
Craptacular wireless card?
Connection deminishment? <-- That is my issue. My router is upstairs and I have my ouya downstairs next to my bed which is surrounded by concrete walls. (I live in the basement like a boss)
Also Android wifi cards are not really known for keeping the best of signals. But I know in the latest firmware update they were working on a way to speed up the update process by doing something with changing the way they handle OTA's. Either way, I think they are working on a way to fix it.
PS: New UI is SLICK!
ArmorD, wifi and usb weirdness were sort of the major things I worried about getting an ouya.
thankfully, wifi has not been a problem, I can run utorrent at surprising speeds.
but from how many users' complaints I've seen, this seems to be something ouya really need to investigate? it could be as simple as bad antenna or poor solder joints? or it could be down to local interference (microwave ovens, DECT phone systems, CCTV wireless cameras, or even as basic as is one radio too close to another radio?)
Wow I thought this forum is dead and kinda forgot this thread. Anyway, agree with you guys.
@darkknight1812 I know that, been using Adroid since the early days and know exactly what you mean. However all my other devices have pretty good speed in the same network.
But I did find a solution for slow XBMC streaming if you guys are interested. You just have to modify advancedsettings.xml(xbmc) and change the max buffering to 0(unlimited). It's supposed to be only working on Gotham but it did work perfectly with Frodo(the one that can be downloaded from Discover) as well. I'm too busy to find the guide but you'll find it by googling around. I'll post it later if someone's unable to find it.
Cheers.
I know a lot of people have been complaining of horrible wifi reception. In my house we have DECT phones and a microwave, and a baby monitor. Whenever the baby monitor is on, our ATV2 in the bedroom (wifi) gets HORRIBLE reception. Even laptops when the monitor is on will be shaky.
I just got the Ouya this week, set it up in the Den (no wired ethernet ports there) and to my amazement, using the latest nightly XBMC (2013-12-09 i believe?), i am able to stream 1080p MKv's (8-12 gigabytes per movie) with only a single buffer when it first starts loading. After that, to my amazement, i've been having no issues at all. Granted, haven't yet sat to watch an entire movie, but in the 5 min test I did last night, it was working for all formats and even decoding 5.1 for me.
tl;dr I'm extremely happy with my new Ouya purchase and amazingly getting fantastic wifi reception
(p.s. I have NOT set that buffering var in advancedsettings.xml, just installed nightly as is)
