Hi all,
Wonder if anyone has experienced this. My Touch HD (stock Orange ROM) is really jerky when playing Youtube videos through the client over Wifi, but fine over a 3g connection..
The Wifi connection is plenty fast enough, the Mrs has an iPhone, which works fine.
Anyone got any idea what I can check? I've made sure everything is turned off.. bluetooth etc..
stuck!
thanks
Mark
Hi, easy one this :0) Go to the settings tab select communications, in the bottom right tap settings, then tap wireless lan. Once there select the power mode tab then move slide all the way to the left for best performance. Always works for me, hope it does for you :0)
Sadly not mate, already tried that!
OK so this is REALLY weird. If I have nothing else downloading at home, and the youtube player is downloading it's jerky.
If I start a download going on my laptop (usenet - canes my connection) then what HAS buffered on my Touch HD plays fine. The moment I stop the download, it starts to be jerky again.
Almost seems like the throughput to the phone is killing it somehow, weird! have tried all sorts of settings on my router, but no dice.
Really stuck as to what to try next :/
Must admit until buffering is complete, I too get slightly jerky playback. Although this has always been the case with every Windows Mobile device I've had. Sorry I can't help you anymore m8
:0( Good luck with it.
Background downloading slows the device down, so it cant play the video smoothly. Go to youtube app settings and turn video playback quality to fast download. That helps, but the quality is awful.
I use the high quality, and just wait the video to finish downloading.
It's not just the fact that it's downloading in the background because it's doing that over 3g but plays fine, it's something specific to Wifi.
It's also not just slightly jerky, it's REALLY bad.
I mean.. I've watched plenty of reviews of this device where they've streamed youtube over wifiand it.screen fine..
I wonder if upgrading the radio would help? or is the wifi stuff done by the rom?
Worth a try, my HD works much better with new radio 1.10.25.25 + Custom rom Black Pearl 1.7 lite.
will have to give that a try then. The stock Orange rom is good apart from that but a bit slow.
Just finding picking one to flash to a touch daunting, too much choice!
OK, so I downloaded and flashed to panosha Black Pearl v2.1 HD ROM.
Works fine, is VERY nice and fast Also updated my radio version to 1.12.25.16 but the Youtube thing is still there!!!
I'm going to try it on someone else's wifi connection as soon as I can, but for now, anyone got a clue?!?
OK, I've tried three different roms, and even tried two other wifi networks- same problem.
The device is generally slower when connected to a wifi network, not just youtube. I guess it's just more noticeable when playing YT videos.
Really lost now ;(
Could be that once you are connected on WIFI the youtube player automatically selects the best quality video for you to view, increasing system requirements.
At the same time as trying to view the higher quality video the WIFI also uses a fair bit of CPU power. Try downloading a file on WIFI with everything else closed and you'll notice your device is a lot less responsive until the download is completed.
Only a guess though.
Well of course, but you'd expect a device of this spec to be able to play it without stuttering all over the shop whilst nothing else is loaded...
Hi there = I've got the same bleedin problem!
I am on orange payg 3g, Dutty 2.1 extreme rom.
I never had the problem with the original (orange) total pants rom, but I've also updated the radio to 1.12 so perhaps it's an issue with the radio. Have you tried 1.13 the latest?
It's nowt to do with the youtube settings for sure, it's most definitely wi-fi related. I've noted the i-player mobile app is wildly out of sync on the audio too and never used to be that bad.
If anyone has any ideas or tweaks please let us know. thanks!
Maybe its because when you connect to wifi network it says that rx speed is 1mbps (it should be faster) and the real download speed is around 30 kb per second and i think that that is not enough for playing realtime high quality videos (needs buffering more often). When you set option to best performance that will just increase your transmit power and you will get better reception (but the speed still remains). Maybe that is the problem. Any solution on how to increase the RX speed?
Hi there, i am from singapore. I am also experiencing the same problem with the youtube client from the stock rom. i got mine from starhub! the video is jerky! need help!!

Hi All, got this working, but video is very jerky, maybe similar to the (now fixed) bug in the core player?
Anyone know of a way around it?
Kev
Bandwidth
Is the Slingbox on your local network or are you running across the Internet? I'd be very interested to know the cause of the issue as I have it working well on my iPAQ and plan to upgrade to the Ameo and would hate to lose any quality. In fact want to gain from the VGA and faster processor!
-Krip
Local, this is def an Ameo problem sadly.
Must be the crappy ATI thing.
Kev
Strange I am running it fine on my Dopod U1000 over T-mobile HSDPA. I have tested with Version 1.0.0 and the latest on Slings website..
No jerky motion?
Kev
No, I know this is the obvious, but you have not got it set to Control mode? Control mode is very jerky, but allows faster changing of channels etc.
Nope, tried all the different settings.
Where have you installed it?
Kev
It is on the MicroDrive. I will try and run a test over my WLAN. BTH I only use it over HSDPA.
What happen to this thread, it's been quite for a while. I've been following this because I'm evaluating if I should get the box. A few questions:
1) When you watch over internet, typically how fast does the download quota got eaten up? Say how many MB per hour?
2) Do you think UMTS connection instead of HSDPA will give smooth video?
Thanks guys for the info.
Well I run it over Wi-fi on my local LAN and I must say I'm quite disappointed. The picture isn't much better than my QVGA iPAQ and I have no idea why.

Slingmobile player seems to have issues with landscape -- also on my TyTN. If you put it in portrait mode, even on the Athena, it works better. But, it defeats the purpose of a nice 5" screen of TV. I leave it on landscape, and deal with the jerkyness. And this seems to hold true on EDGE, 3G, HSDPA, or WiFi.
New Slingplayer 1.5 is out today. Give it a try.
Your video quality is going to be dependent on the slowest connections. (ie your upload at home and your download where you are watching it) THe sling stream technology maximizes the video quality based on network conditions. anyone have any questions just drop me a line

Hello all I'm with T-Mobile after getting upset w/AT&T. No matter what
player I use the video is more trouble than it's worth. I have an
unlocked 8525 which is a 3G phone, all T-Mobile has is GPRS or Edge
Networks. I've spoken to my provider & to HTC. They say without the 3G
network I cannot *have video. I know that's not true, I used to be
able to watch news feeds or whatever with a Razor. With a 500.00 PPC Icannot??? If some oneone could explain away around this problem it
would be much appreciated!
I'm running Shcap's 4.00 ROM
Radio 1.54.07.00
I know to use the search here & Wiki & any MOD here can look & see I've searched until I'm blind & confused. I guess I've read too much. I've tried 4 or 5 different radios, I'm all out of ideas. As I said any help would be much appreciated!
it all comes down to the resolution of the video
if it's 640_480 then your screen will only show ½ the pixels anyway
but it will still transfer 2times the data down
personaly i would not bother with video on grps it's
too slow even for me to surf without loosing my patience
So I guess the only fix is to drop T-Mobile & goto a 3g carrier? My contract will not be up until June & by then there should be all kinds of new PDA's out there. I guess it would be just as well for me to use a GO Phone & pay the 150.00 X-L fee & call it a day!
in TCPMP goto Options, Video, and select Raw FrameBuffer.
DirectDraw is not compatible with WM6 from what I hear.
This fixed choppy video problems I had with Youtube videos and TCPMP.

8525 (Hermes) has been notorious for crap video playback, depending on which ROM you use. The ROM the TC is using should be loaded withe the decent drivers. Best thing i use is Coreplayer and it works fine with Hardware acceleration.
Directdraw DOES work with WM6, select YV12 overlay and it should be fine.
GPRS is pretty poor bandwidth and bearing in mind it is rate adaptive so is unlikely you get anywhere close to the theoretical 80/60 kbps maximum. In a sence TMobile was correct in that 3G really is a good idea when planning on using streaming media. Depends on loads of things like the resolution, framerate, bitrate, bandwidth, codec etc...
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for there input.Being new to all this, I need all the helI can get. I plan to flash Schap's new 4.30 full to my phone this week, I hear that TCPMP is more less the same as Coreplayer. Is this true or not? I do have one question. Which radio using T-Mobile has worked the best for everyone in the MO & AR area of the USA? I think this may have something to do with it. Thanks for the input!
Hi everyone
I love the youtube setup page on the touch HD but once I trydown the videos I keep getting a visual stutter(not sound). This continues until the video has fully downloaded and spoils the video entirely. I have tried the fast download option in the settings but the quality is poor and I did not get the HD to watch blurry videos. I have contacted HTC and tried posting in various forums but to no avail. Is this normal? How can this be corrected?
Thanks
stating if this is while connecting as /GPRS/EDGE/3g/HSDPA
would help
I have always used my wifi settings for youtube. However I just tried it with HSPDA and there was no lag even before the video had fully downloaded! When I tried HSPDA the video downloads and you have to manually start the video wheras with WiFi the video starts automatically(with stutter)
Strange
I to have a stutter if I play over Wi-Fi while the video is still downloading, had this problem also on my HTC Diamond. Seems that the CPU just can't handle rendering the video while the Wi-Fi is being maxed out as it's seems it's just to much data for the CPU to process at once.
Once the video has finished downloading it then plays very smoothly.
HSDPA or 3G play fine though while downloading as it's slower than Wi-Fi, so less data for CPU to work on. Until HTC start providing us with devices with more than 528mhz CPU's or allow the GPU to render the video while the CPU handles the downloading then this problem is always going to be there.
Wonder though if HTC could radically slow down the Wi-Fi on current devices in the YouTube app only in order for the CPU to smoothly render the video while downloading.
I installed skyfire and also tried some flash websites on IE since it does have flash support and while watching videos flash seems to be real choppy. I think it's due to the slowness of the buffering, but I have 4-5 bars on 3G so just wondering if its the browser or connection. Anyone have a fix to make the flash playback more responsive thanks.
Have you tried it using wifi?
What are the results?
No I haven't tried it yet, but I will definitely do that. I was kinda hoping I'd see better results with 3g, but I guess I was presumptuous.
I tried it with wifi and yet the video is still slow and choppy. It's almost like having a computer that can't handle a program so it starts buffering and bugging out. I don't have anything else running and I have hooked up it to wifi as well and let the video load before watching still is choppy and goes crazy. I have tried it with skyfire is it true that the ie has flash support just not for all sites and does opera have some flash support? Basically I only ask because I want to go to streaming sites for movies sports etc. Thanks
The problem with flash and skyfire is its not optimized for mobile browsing. So its going to have issues. I hope the update the browser to what they released for android it doesnt actually play the video in the browser but does a popout window to play content which seems a lot better.
The crazy thing is i've seen people demo the skyfire browser on youtube and it worked perfectly crazy. Is there any other alternative to getting a better flash experience on our phone until Adobe officially releases full flash support? Mostly I'm trying to use sites like justin to watch programs and they all require flash.
i tried many ways to use skyfire, but still no well progress, its buffering rate is slow, whether u using wifi or 3g, it has a unique connection with the server, if that server is slow(having too much load) then ur browser gona be goofy.
Alright so I was following some YouTube idiot and rooted my phone wrongly, so it wouldn't boot, so I downloaded the GRI54 Deodexed and flashed it on, completely stock, however, there are 2 weird problems on my GT-i9023 Nexus S
Problem 1 - The wi-fi is WEAK. Not just normal weak, EXTREMELY WEAK. I'm only 1 meter away from the router and I've already lost 1-2 bar(s)??? When I'm out atschool and use my iPod Touch 4g, I get full-bars but with my Nexus S I have only 1 bar and the internet doesn't work at all!
Problem 2 - Youtube buffers videos fine on the wi-fi, but with EVERY video after 1 minute it would come up with an error saying something like touch to retry, and it happens EVERY MINUTE. LITERALLY. 1 minute later, bam, video stops loading. So I reload the video, continue from where it stopped and BAM one minute later, touch to retry.
What the heck is wrong here? The GSM signal is awesome/amazing, I get fullbars everywhere, but the wi-fi and youtube are annoying me.
Should I try out a custom ROM to see if it fixes this problem??
Tried custom roms, same thing.

Was 6, changed it to 1, no difference.
Oh and I restored using Odin and the weak wi-fi was resolved.
But I still have this weird YouTube problem where it will load a video, then suddenly stop loading it after 1 minute in HQ mode and 3 minutes in non-HQ mode, it's like the wi-fi sleeps or something.
same problem here. Cannot watch youtube videos on both youtube app and browser.

Yeah, same. But weirdly enough Vimeo videos buffer and load just fine, and I can enjoy the whole video? WEIRD.
I have same YouTube problem.
About wifi it seems like I have a problem too: I have a router at home and there are some places where my father's old HTC touch HD gets the wifi and my device doesn't even see the network.
I'm on stock 2.32 had the nexus s since Jan or Feb and I never
Had wifi or you tube problems it must be all that rooting and rom experimenting y'all been
Doing....
Well I'm running a custom ROM and have no problems. My Wifi reception is acceptable and even when I'm far away from my access point and getting just 18 Mbit/s YouTube videos load just fine, HQ mode too.
Problem can be the channel your access point is set to our other Wifis in your neighborhood. You could also try to update the radio on your Nexus S and disable the sleep policy for Wifi connections.
Same here. Even if i sit right next to the router, my wifi speeds are pathetic. Is this a problem with the handset or the android 2.3.4 OS?
Any luck finding out???
My wifi speeds are fine but I did notice the drop in signal. I realized the wifi antenna might be on the bottom or near the bottom of the phone where the buldge on the back of the phone. If you put your hand over that spot your signal will drop ....it's sorta like the iPhones grip of death.
Youtube sucks.. It buffers more than Realplayer did in 1998 on dialup. Nothing to do with your phone..
