Digitizer Non Responsive

Hey guys.
Owned the phone for a few months now and have started to notice a really odd problem. For a while the screen was being fairly unresponsive to touches and I couldn't figure out why. Taking the screen protector off fixed it temporarily but now the issue is back.
I finally realised that the issue was a black smudge that would appear whenever I pushed too hard on the screen. I'm assuming this registers as a touch on the screen and prevents it from working. Rubbing the stylus over the area usually makes it dissipate and the screen becomes responsive again, but it would come back not long later after general use.
Also there's some fairly odd rainbowing underneath the digitizer that moves around when you press on the screen. It circles around the smudges when they appear.
I know that all sounds fairly vague, but any help on the issue would be great. Is a new digitizer in order or could it be fixed by just dissassembling it? I've tried using a suction cap to make the problem go away, the rainbowing disappears but slowly comes back again. Also I haven't dropped the phone, left it near anything etc, besides the digitizer problem the phone works fine.

(On a side note, I bought the phone off eBay and had to use a serial number locater to determine the region of the phone. Found out it was destined for India when I'm in Australia. Fairly odd, but what are the warranty implications? Is it still covered?)

I've sent it to HTC for repair, since my Diamond2 has 1 year warranty and I only bought it in May/09. HTC said that screen issues are excluded of the warranty and that I have to pay about €70 for the screen repair, because, they say, the problem is due to misuse - wich I don't think is true.

You have collapsed your layers between lcd and digitizer.
Some folks here use duct tape to repeatedly pull the layers apart and it fixes their issue for a while.

Thought it'd be something along those lines. I'll give the duct tape trick a try, can you point me to some other threads? I tried searching but was probably using the wrong terms.
Also vasco that's complete bollocks. I've kept my phone in its case the whole time I've had it, never put any pressure on it or had it in a rough environment. I'd throw a few customer complaints their way, especially if other people have had the same issue. Nice to know I'm not alone at least.

I've already filed a complaint to the comm's regulation office. I'me presently waiting for their response.

had the same issue.. I just replaced the digitizer, it's a bit tricky but certainly possible.. yours is not that old so it should be repaired under warranty if you can have that done (have no clue about your situation there..)

Here is my thread about this.
I am in the same boat as you - phone was destined for somewhere in Asia, and I am in Australia. I contacted HTC, and they also told me that the problem could be caused by misuse, even though I KNOW it wasn't, as my phone is always in it's case unless being used, never dropped etc. It sucks, but I think I will just replace the digitizer myself.

Nexus One touch screen doesn't work properly when horizontal

Hi, I've now used the Nuxus One for a few days and I'm pretty happy with it and all it's fancy fetures.
The phone works flawlessly and the only minor issue I'm willing to report is the fact that when the phone is lying on the table the touchscreen doesn't respond as quickly as it does when holding it in hand..
I've also noticed that if you touch the shell of the phone with a finger while trying to use the touchscreen, everything goes back to normal.
Is it a flaw only present in mine or is it an issue that involves the capacitive touch screen of the Nexus?

mine work correctly, try it on another table

I've tried it on different surfaces but the result it's the same..
Problem is that it doesn't always do it, so it's difficult to judge if a surface works better than an other.
I've called HTC support and together with them I've done some tests, like letting another person use it the same way, but nothing changes.
I've also done a hard reset and nothing has changed so I think I will have to send it in hoping they will fix it..
I envy you in the US where you can just ask for a replacement...

Is it possible that your fingers are real dry and or you are working in a dry low humidity environment?

I don't think so, since I've now tried it in different environments and by different people...
This is very weired..and annoying..

I've had my Nexus One for over a month, but I recall having the same issue one day early on.
Similarly, I've had days where I can't operate the touchpad on my notebook computer because my fingers were dried out from handling solvents.
I have an associate that has a similar issue when the phone is in a leather holster case. She has to take the phone out on occasion to operate it, most while driving.

Yes, I think so too. It must be something electrical. When I keep it in hand or touch it, the static electricity must not influence it, but it does so if I try using it lying on its own.

I'm glad to see you're still investigating. Because the problem is so repeatable, and the fact that its not a common complaint, I'd conclude theres a something wrong with your phone.
One thing I'd try is to remove the battery for 8hrs (overnight) and see if that make a difference. I've worked with a lot of electronic devices that behave badly after receiving a static discharge. Sometimes leaving it sit without power helps the static dissipate.
But the fact that it works while on the laptop would indicate a poor ground from the touchscreen circuit to the chassis of the phone, as the proximity of the laptop changes the capacitance of the internal circuit enough to overcome the lack of effect that the chassis alone needs to provide.

hehe I have to investigate to be sure this is a bug relative to my device so that when I will send it in for repair they will have to find a way to solve it and not just pretend it doesn't exist...

try pressing with all skin and not with your nail. It needs heat to work.

No, it doesn't. To prove it, hold a metal spoon and slide it across your screen. Mine works.

this was a common problem on the G1 and the way the capacitive screen was designed. In order for it to be functioning completely, HTC told users that he needed to have it in his hand or at least a finger or two touching the phone. HTC said that it simulated a circuit (the hand on the phone made a complete circuit while just touching it left the circuit incomplete) I have noticed the same thing on the N1... it works great in my hand on if i am touching the sides with a finger and scrolling or using it, but if i just lay it down and try to scroll/touch with 1 finger it becomes much less responsive, the same way the G1 would.
i will see if i can find the exact thread over in the G1 forums where all this is posted.

The only thing I found while googling is that you need some humidity in the air for it to work effectively. I'm really not sure if that applies to this specific design though.

I've never had an issue with using the screen on a table, so this is probably isolated, I'd give htc a call and ask for repairs.
Edit: I just tried for the hell of it doing the pinky touch on the frame, and the soft buttons became much more responsive. Hmm

Defective screen - is this terminal?

Hi everyone,
My phone survived falling off the roof of my car and being run over by another car - the leather slip case kept it intact. Initially I thought I'd got away with it, but its picked up a screen defect which has got progressively worse. Essentially the colours go screwy - a green tint with blue bands which move across the screen. Its definitely a loose wire as I've been able to "fix" the fault by tapping the back of the phone.
Until tonight, where its not going back to normal no matter where I tap or how hard. I'm not afraid of disassembly if its fixable - found a video online where they pull it literally to bits. But if I go buy the torx driver is the ribbon cable into the screen reasonably easy to get to? Anyone done it?
Still got 4 months left on my contract, so will be a little sad if I have to resurrect my Hermes.....

The blue thing usually happens with my phone. Got my screen replaced like a week ago and the problem persists. What I do is 'flex' the screen in the top left and bottom right and that usually works. Try like bending the screen (sort of) and it will probably work.

Possible fix (or at least temporary bandaid) for faulty Atrix 4G digitizers.

I found a simple solution to fixing a digitizer that's starting to go bad, after having replaced the digitizer on my phone TWICE. The first digitizer started having the typical symptoms, where about a 1cm bar about a third of the way down the screen just wouldn't register touches. And if it did, it normally ended up with spontaneous, erratic behavior. I ordered a replacement, which turned out to be worse than the original digitizer. Sent that one back, got another digitizer, and it worked great for about a month. Then I started having same issues all over again. (And if anybody here has replaced a digitizer on this phone already, you probably understand how painful it can be.)
So, for those of you who haven't ordered a replacement yet, and are having the issues I've described above, try this test first. When you start experiencing erratic behavior and dead spots, squeeze the upper portion of the phone, where the camera, speaker, and Motorola logo is, moving in left to right. Don't be afraid to use a good amount of pressure, but don't squeeze to where you might crack something. If the problem disappears, the thin cable underneath that area is starting to separate away from the connections. (Don't know the correct terminology here.) Now, I'm not sure if it's just glue or really thin amount of solder holding these connections together, but I do know that they break pretty easily. I ended up using a heat gun, and heating up the upper portion of the phone till it was a little too hot to touch (be careful, though, too hot, and you might cause some damage to the LCD screen.) and used a rag and squeezed from the center, moving outwards, maintaining as much constant pressure as I could, till the phone was about normal temperature.
It's been roughly an hour since I've tried this, and I haven't had any issues thus far, except for a couple hiccups. I may end up doubling up on the double sided tape on the bottom, to create more of an incline to prevent the ribbon from further separating. But this may help squeeze some more life out of the digitizer. Hopefully this helps a few of you!

Well, turns out the fix really didn't work. Still trying to figure out what causes the digitizers to go bad. I have noticed, though, that squeezing the upper left corner (where the camera is) gets rid of the problem, but it reappears usually a few moments later.

you use that piece thin of metal, to push against the fingerprint area, then screen display is good
working for me over a week now.

I got caught in the same problem,i have read a thread about how to fix this problem the other day (which is to insert a small stuff between the battery and fingerprint scanner)
then i tried to pull the scanner upwards a little,then it seems working!
but this issue comes back after i placed the back cover
finally i found that my problem would disappear once the back cover taken out!and appear once covered!

I think the problems starts when you push a lot of times the finger print to wake up the phone.

[Q] touch issues

I have a NST with glowlight and i have touch issues quite often... when using the keyboard when i touch backspace it touches "h".. when i touch space .. it touches b ... does anyone have these screen issues? it's like phantom touches.. i takes me 5mins to type something

This is a known issue. I just received mine in the mail and it had issues. I found you can clean it and it may help. But for me, since it is brand new, I just had them ship out a new one. If you are not under warranty, I actually just did a factory restore and it stemmed to have helped a bit.

ok thx. It's brand new for me also... not even 1 month... do i need to ship back my nook to get a replacement? i bought from ebay... i need to contact who to report the issue? I read when they give u a replacement, they you a refurbished one?
edit: hmmm so this issue is faulty hardware? or it's just cleaniness? and it will happen sooner or later on any nook? will a cover help?

Nook touch screens use infra-red sensors/emitters located around the edges of the screen. If the transparent plastic sandwiched between the screen and the bezel gets dusty, it can cause problems.

so it's not really a hardware fault but it's because of dirt?? any cover case that can protect against such scenarios? how do i clean it?

I think there are two scenarios (perhaps more). Faulty hardware in which the infra red sensors do not function correctly or dirt/ dust impeding their ability to function. One always hopes for the latter.
The reset I did only helped for about an hour.
First try to clean it.
Since you got it off eBay, start by contacting the seller. Ask the person if it is still under warranty.
Then, contact 1800thebook to get a replacement. If it is not under warranty, I am not sure what your options are. EBay and electronics is always a gamble. Sorry.

ok thx,... i have tried cleaning it up but it helps for a few seconds but then it gets freaky at times.. it's a pain to type! do you guys ever take notes with it??? it's impossible...
i don't think it's a hardware issue since the first 2 weeks it works with no problems... i was keeping it in the box while not in use... since i started not keeping it in its box.. i am getting these touch issues... so seems related to dust...
will i need to send back my nook to get a replacement... sounds pretty annoying to do so.. shipping is damn expensive
sidenote: looking at the edge of the nook, i see shiny particles... is this normal or is this dust?

i can't even type my wifi password anymore... every button i touch also "ghost" touch the corresponding middle button.. e.g. when i press d, i get dg ... how do i clean that damn thing? where do i need to clean exactly?? i am cleaning the edge.. does not seem to work.. sometimes it seems ok, then 2 secs later it gets messed up again

Cleaning the screen is a different reason to normal screens. Normally you just want the greasy finger prints off etc. However thats for a resistive or capacitve based touchscreen. NST/NSTG touchscreen works on an infrared array running along the edges ABOVE the screen rather than a stuck on touchscreen so as not to affect the contrast in sunlight.
This means a piece of particulate matter on the screen will affect the touch sensor.
If its confused sometimes it won't work at all! The worst environment to ever take your NST is to a sandy beach, really don't do it.
Personally I use a air duster (compressed air can) to get those pesky bits out of the edges.
When not using NST keep face down to keep out bits of crap or keep in a case..
