Q: Leaked ICS vs Official OTA, thoroughly confused - Acer Iconia A500

So I'm reading that those receiving the official OTA ICS are reporting that the name is the same as the leaked version. Does that mean Acer made no updates to the leaked file? I held off flashing the leaked filed due to reports of bugs assuming that the OTA would be polished.
So...is there a difference between the leaked and OTA? If not, I'll go ahead and install one of the ICS Roms.

The last leak was relatively bug free and pretty close to a finished product. Don't believe all the reports until you here it from a respected member that has a good reputation here on xda.

Upgrade 2.1 leak to 2.1 OTA

So I thought I read on here multiple times that it was impossible to upgrade the Eris from the 2.1 Leak to the 2.1 OTA. Just for the hell of it, I gave it a shot. To my amazement it worked. Did I misunderstand the forum or is this really not supposed to happen?
Edit: Grammar
Can you explain more clearly please? Ota from Verizon or?
If you are referring to the "so-called" Verizon OTA release candidate it is possible to update from the 2.1 leak to this version, it's just not possible to update to the 2.1 root which, I may be mistaken, at one point had been called OTA in a few places.
Well When the first 2.1 Leak came out I immediately upgraded to it.
It was this one
HTC 2.1 Leak Rom
Verizon test rom, REJECTED. Do not Install if you want root.
Rom: http://www.sendspace.com/file/frqze0
I downloaded it from the original post from the Taiwanese guy who posted it on here in the first place.
Then just today I thought why not give it a shot and install the newest one. Which was this one.
HTC 2.1 Release Candidate (AKA OTA) Leak Rom
Verizon test rom, possible OTA leak. Do not Install if you want root.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RHNAWUR0
Was this not supposed to be possible or not? I thought I read on here that once the Leaked 2.1 was installed, nothing else could be installed. That we were stuck with it.
Let me know if you need any more info.

Oh ok, I guess that's what I did then. I was just confused. This version seems to run A LOT smoother.
Thanks for the answer.
On the contrary, from all I've read, I was of the understanding that upgrading from 2.1 old leak to 2.1 new leak was not only possible, but recommended, if the few bugs in old 2.1 leak...bugged you. Did my upgrade a few days ago from leak old to leak new, and it I like it.
Thanks for all the hard work, leakers and devs!

This is good to know!!!
It depends on how verizon packages the update. If its OTA, without an RUU or PB00IMG.zip, chances will be small (unless they do a format, then complete install, as custom roms do.) OTA's are targetted from one platform to another.

Anyone Seen the Official OTA Yet?

Just checkin'...TIA

They usually release only to a few thousand at a time the first few days, then up to 10,000 a day a few days later or something like that, so you might not get it till next week if its truly coming out.
They also have typically announced the update in the Verizonwireless.com forums under the android\incredible section. Until you see it there I would consider it a rumor.
Im just wondering if we will even get the ota if we're rooted or if we will have to unroot first.
According to this, the update is for real:

Oops...can't post a link yet.
hey OP, make this a poll
I've been seeing it everywhere, but haven't gotten it yet.

gonna have to unroot to get updates.
EDIT: I take this back. It depends on your version. If you have an older version of software and you have not turned off notifications you will get the notification to update. If, however you're running a froyo ROM then my understanding is that you won't see the update.
Been on all the android forums today , so far nobody has gotten the update OTA.
If it was out today vzw would confirm it like they did when we got the first update.
All I heard today was a friend of a friend got the update , RIGHT !
Verizon hasn't released the "official" OTA, but there is a leaked version that people are downloading and installing. It appears to be authentic, but since not an OTA may affect future Radio updates if you install it. Plenty of info over at the Droid Forum.

Which Droid forum?
this droid forum for one thing. Check in the development section and you will see several threads with leaked ota discussing this
.
I'm really anxious to get the update, but I'm going to wait for the OTA. I updated my Eris with a leaked OTA, and I ended up regretting it. It made rooting much more difficult, and stopped me from getting the final OTA.

Do you know how it stopped you from getting the final OTA? i would think if you wiped and went back to a stock ROM the network wouldn't know the difference.

Nope. Known issue with the Eris leak.
Well, I'm not sure if if I have the OTA or not, or just part of it.
I rooted with the original instructions, then updated everything with Unrevoked 3.1. Stock ROM installed, have working WIFI tether.
Yesterday, got a message in my notification bar that a Verizon widget was available. I can now add a new Data Usage widget to my desktop, which says "Data Usage 0.0/0 MB Estimate as of N/A". Not sure why it isn't updating, but it's possible that it's related to me having a corporate rather than a personal account.
Never got a prompt to install any OTA. Tethering still works.
Hardware version 0002, Firmware version 2.1-update1
So maybe the Verizon widget was pushed by itself without the full OTA since I don't have the standard recovery?
FYI, the OTA has been halted in favor of packaging it up with the official Android FroYo v2.2 update. So instead up two OTA's we will have one OTA to rule them all!

Even better! I assume the recommendation then is to unroot?

No, the recommendation would probably be to hold your horses and wait till the OTA get's patched so we can simply upgrade without any hassle.

So... Is the update available ota?

I have seen a few people say that they downloaded the update via Ota. I have not gotten a notification, and if I check manually, it says that there are no updated available. What is everyone else getting??
not sure what update your talking about check the dev section the newest leaked ota is
new Sprint OTA (3.30.651.2)
No one has received that update over the air, they may be late and talking about the previous update 3.29.651.2 because they are rooted or for whatever other reason. The update will probably be different than the one floating around, since it has been so long they may be revising it.
3.30 is a leak and not an official update. So it's not available OTA.
PROTIP: OTA actually stands for "over-the-air" even though most people on this site refer to any update as an OTA... Thank you, jdreynss, for properly using this terminology.

[Q] 2.3.4 update now vs OTA

I am considering updating to 2.3.4 now instead of waiting for the official OTA. The reason I hesitate is because to my understanding and flashing, updating via OTA (future updates) or SBF, will brick the device. also are there any noticeable bugs? I am curious as to what everyone else is doing. Just looking for feedback

I am on the leaked 2.3.4 and can not imagine going back to any other version. I would imagine any future ota updates would not damage the phone.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Is there a ROM from a any particular thread you used?

Hi. My advise is this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159385
it´s gingerbread 2.3.4 from a dev.
Don´t wait more on froyo...
I just unlocked and upgraded to the stock FR orange rom, canadian here, and i have to say 2.3.4 is much smoother. BTW don't expect the same customization from a stock official rom vs a moddified stock or custom rom. Just unlock your self and have fun
