[Q] Previous steps to ICS update? - Acer Iconia A500

What do we have to do before flashing official ICS?
In my case, I am with rooted 3.2.1.. can I update without risk? or I have to downgrade and install official (non-rooted) 3.2.1?
Also, I have deleted some stock apps, is there gonna be any problem with that?
Thanks.

Same question here , I have read in other post that if I have CWM installed there could be some problems with the update.
I'm running a rooted stock rom 3.2.1 too, So can anyone of you upload an ICS rooted stock rom to install it by CWM?
Thanks in advance!

I'm also a little confused. I just installed stock unrooted rom from acer recovery and tried to do the update but it failed. Any pointers?

ICS update?

Hi guys,
Just a quick question. I'm currently running flexreaper custom rom on my acer a 500. In order to get the official update to ICS via OTA do I have to switch back to a generic rom? If yes a guide would be great.
Thank you,
Dec

My understanding is that you need to have the stock (ie original) recovery on your tab. In other words, not Clockwork recovery. I tried to d/l and install the ICS OTA but it failed, as I had CWM on the tab. Flashed a stock recovery and all installed fine afterwards. Hope this helps.

How to"re root" a500 after receiving ics ota from Acer

I did some searching and did not find a direct answer to this. Feel free to lock this thread if this has been answered.
I flashed back to my original stock ROM from when I rooted my device. I went through the series if updates, to this morning and and updated to ics. I have lost root access. So the question is.... Is there a way to root my device on ics without downgrading. I got to have my AD free and battery saving app

Or if someone could post a link that would be great! Thank you!

this worked for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546593
I saw this earlier. I guess the leak could be what I have? I will have to check the firmware and compare it to what is listed. Thanks btw I will try this later tonight and update if this worked.

I have same situation. I had rooted HC 3.2.1. Yesterday I made the update to stock ICS. I have to say that I am not happy with this new rom. It is not so smooth and fast that I expected. I am intrested to install some nice and fast custom rom. How to do it? What is need to be done to root and install the ClockworkMod??????
Worked perfectly and easily on mine. Acer_AV041_A500_1.033.00_PA_CUS1
I used the method as above, coming from the stock ota. And it worked I was able to use the battery saver and TB. I don't have a custom recovery, in order to do a back up for the time being but that is okay for now.
Edit: I see there is a bunch more threads started with this same topic so feel free to shut this down.
Hey did you unroot before installing the OTA ICS update? Also, what about recovery?
Acer_A500_041.205.01_COM_GEN2
Just to clarify, the root method for the ICS leak works on the US ICS OTA? (Acer_A500_041.205.01_COM_GEN2)
I just want to make sure, as I am being offered the OTA update from stock rooted Acer_A500_7.014.02_COM_GEN2. I want to make sure I can re-root if I do the update. Otherwise, I'll just wait for a CWM-flashable rooted version. Or has someone already posted that that I've missed?
Yes I was rooted. Then went back to my original stock ROM and stock recovery then went through all the updates. I updated this morning to the stock ics from Acer. Then used the thread above to root again. However I do not have a custom recovery at the moment but root access apps are working just fine. Which is all I need for now.(I live in southern Michigan)
thanks. A question about your custom recovery...Does Acer Recovery Installer no longer work to install CWM again? Or have you just not attempted to re-install CWM?

okay cool thanks. What did you use to unroot? For flashing back to stock recovery I will use "Acer Recovery Installer".
I tried using iconiaroot which I used to root but it still won't unroot my tablet. I even tried restarting and still nothing.
I lost root when doing the updates to clarify. And no I do not have a recovery at the moment, which I don't need because I am running ics with rooted apps that is all I need. I have no reason to flash a custom ROM. I will let the developers work with this for a bit and I will probably check it or later

Okay great thanks. Glad to know it still worked, flashing the ota update with still having root. Only thing that worries me is I flashed back to stock recovery using that program an went I booted to recovery, it was exclamation point inside a triangle. Hope that doesn't affect my update process.

I hope a root option comes out that doesn't require a ROM like gingerbreak. Maybe it's not possible for ICS or there aren't any developers interested in working on it, I don't know, but I'll wait.
It shouldn't your stock recovery is different then a custom recovery ie cwm. You will have to find another thread or something to flash a custom recovery. If your wanting to have a custom ROM. I have no need for it. So to put this into a nut shell.
Flash back to stock ROM (honeycomb)
Flash stock recovery.
Except the ota.
Use the link in first post to"re root"your device.
You will have a stock ROM from Acer that has root access. No recovery.
I Hope this makes it clear as mud:sly:
Hit the thanks button if any of this helped you, good day.

Just to let you know that you will have recovery if you follow this link.

Wouldn't Rootkeeper be able to restore root after the update? It worked when I updated my Razr to the leaked ICS.

okay. sorry for all the questions, but does it matter what version of HC I'm on? You say flash back to stock, is that just if I was running a custom rom? I can't find the sdcard I have my backups on but I'm running completely stock 3.2.1 HC. Just rooted and running CWM.
No ICS Update for me, Rooted 3.2, Need Help!
I thought having my tablet simply rooted wouldnt cause a big issue, i didnt flash it, im still running 3.2 gen 2 but no update for ics has appeared, when checking for update it says im up to date, ive checked several times, tried looking into it seeing if i had to unroot somehow which ive found no program that will unroot my tablet successfully i do not want to wipe because last time i rooted it wiped and i lost alot of important data i couldnt back up. Someone please advise me or send me the Canadian/USA Update Zip or other location for the official ics. Thanks!

Why do you want to do this?
Im having trouble rooting the tab. I read somewhere that the root isnt always successful when on 4.0.4, which is my problem at the moment
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
You don't need to downgrade to 4.0.3, I have rooted my device using a root method for the 4.0.4 version, it works fine, check this link if you need help rooting it: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/25228-how-to-rooting-gt-p3113-step-by-step-updated-07182012/
(if you have 4.0.4, you either have the UEBLG2 or UEBLG5 firmware, check the about device menu in the settings to make sure)
But, if you still want to flash the 4.0.3 version, google the old firmware version, download it and flash it via Odin.
I had the same problem and could not get root to work on 4.0.4. I ended up doing an Odin to 4.0.3 and then root worked with no problems. Before that I think I tried like six times and finally boot looped the thing.

How to downgrade from 4.0.4 to 4.0.3 stock rom to be exactly? Just download stock 4.0.3 and flash it with Odin just like you would upgrade from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4? I would like also downgrade my p3100 to 4.0.3 so I could root using adb shell. Please confirm the working method of downgrading firmware.
If I Odin down will it raise flash count?

Solved - Installing custom roms on rooted 2.3.4 (Not OTA)

Hello,
I want to know if anybody knows a way to install custom roms on a rooted Droid 2 (2.3.4) with the latest bootloader. I've been trying, but I'm facing an annoying little problem. In order to root my Droid 2 with the latest bootloader, I needed to used the patched 2.3.4 firmware. Whenever I try to install a custom rom through CWM, I get an error telling me that the installation has failed. It says right before the error that I need to make sure I have the OTA update and not the leaked version. I can't get the OTA though because I'll be unable to root that one.
So, does anyone know a work around for installing a custom rom on a non OTA firmware? Any tips, suggestion, apps, links....just anything would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
CJKurow
Update:
I found a solution that I felt was risky, but I took the chance and it worked
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131130&page=3
official cm7 is the only rom that has a kernel check
removing it is not that risky
edit: other gb roms should install fine

That is what I ended up doing, I updated the original post to help out anyone with the same problem.
I thought latest ota was rooted

yes a root method, was found
only one 2.3.4, that i know of 621
& cm7 is based on 2.3.3/ 4.5.601
that's why kernel doesn't match

if youb prefer stock flash a stock rom and get the ota
If you want to go back to stock, install one of the ROMs from here.
If you want to update to a newer custom ROM, then you will most likely have to unlock your bootloader. I think you have to install a newer stock ROM first though. This thread has a guide to unlock the bootloader.
Thanks,
I just flashed a stock ROM and did the OTA update, worked perfectly!
