Mirrors climbing on deep hardware understanding (keys) - G2 and Desire Z General

Let's start from the beginning. I got my DZ in august and the keyboard started in october to not write keys like k and j one time on many... the problem got worse (at first it was just one key) and I sent it to assistance, got it back with a new keyboard. Now the volume up key is broken, it doesn't do anything.
May I found something to tell HTC that the problem may be relate to the other to get a replacement?? I don't want to send my phone back to HTC every four-five months...
They said they couldn't cause I sent the phone for the first time more than a year ago... then I got them to understand that it wasn't possible cause I have had the phone for less than a year. Then they explained something in an italian that was worse than my russian, very bad...
Can someone help me? is there some connections between all hard keys? If I can show them that I understand how phone works they may take me more seriously... Unluckily it isn't like in the US where they give you a sensation...

The volume up and down are built into the harddrive. The keyboard keys are conected to the hard drive via flex cable. They more than likley are separate issues

that's very bad... nothing I can use?

If you have a one year warranty and your phone is less than a year old and it dosent fully work you shouldn't have any issues sending it in. Maybe warranty means something different where you live but if my volume key didn't work I would be able to get a replacement

Hey, it's Italy!! Here we've two years warranty, but no replacement, just repair... Everytime this phone breaks I have to send it away for a week, and if I could have a replacement I'd prefer... Not so funny to have to unroot e reroot every time... And my DZ has many scratches...

Nono yeah, as a matter of fact I translated it by myself, I thought that mirror climbing was an english espression too. Here in Italy means trying to find reasons to support something when you know it's very difficult or even impossible, like mirrors climbing. The second part meant that my reasons had to be related to hardware, so I needed someone skilled enought to be able to find a connection between volume and keyboard, should have been deep understanding of hardware, but I'd modified the title so it was wrogn at the end...
Sorry
Ps I'm sure I've read 'mirror climbing' in english somewhere
Edit: checked and it's used in Italian also with these English words, so I've seen it on an Italian site written in English... You should thank me now if you come to Italy, you'll be able to use a new sentence

Whoops! I thought it was a bad Google translation again Mirrors climbing sounds poetic really. It definitely caught my attention. Good to know though. Makes sense... Like climbing on a slippery surface. It may be an English saying also but I've never heard it. Thanks for the laugh and the information!

Packed it and going to send it to HTC saying it has had two times hw buttons related problems in less than six months...
let's cross the fingers... (this I know for sure is said also in english! )

It's "Fingers crossed".
Good luck!

i just send an email to HTC HQ for their clarification of the poor material surfaces on tattoo keypad.
I'm waiting for their replies regarding the warranty claim as local SiS distributor can't make any decision regarding the keypad issue. They charge MYR150.00 for the stupid keypad. I'm not going to pay for this low quality keypad.
I'm also having the same pro.
Wow, that's really poor quality, I was kind of expecting more from HTC.
This cartainly makes me think twice about buying this device.
I might as well ad that this is not the first time i read about this issue, the pics made this problem so much clearer though. It's also sad to see that this issue actually seem to be so common=/
Too bad that the shell is the only affordable spare part.
Even if the warranty covers this, the buttons has been "worn out" far too fast. So the new ones would be worn out just as fast if they don't do something about the quality. Which I highly doubt that they will, HTC seems to have forsaken this phone a long time ago.
Still, this will be an interesting thread to follow. And after all, the tattoo is still the only android phone that I'd be interested in owning.
Please attached picture of the peeling off metal coating on the keypad. We need HTC Taiwan to rectify the issue.
mine is doing the same thing. I hope I can get warranty for this. Its very frustrating. especially when the phone is only 4 months old.
mine worn out in less than a month... sux...
hmm I have my Tattoo since begin of january and have not such problems like you all (I cannot say that I dont use it a lot...).
Well im from germany, dont know if this matters...
you would think they would use real metal but its only a coating
Same problem, I've had it since December.

Dear W,
Thank you for contacting HTC.
We hope you are well. We are very sorry to hear of the issue you are currently experiencing.
But I am sorry that since the cover of phone is not covered by the warranty, so we cannot replace it as in warranty.
Again, we are sorry for the unhappiness and thank you for your consideration.
Best regards.

this will be my 2nd and last android phone from HTC. I rather get motorola.
Sucks that HTC doesn't care.=/ Too bad the new covers doesn't come with new keys like in the good old days.
Keys that wear out in less than a couple of months kind of ruins the point with changeable covers.
There wouldn't be much point in repairing the keyboard either, since the quality is this bad, it'd just look the same in a couple of months.
I have never had a phone with that bad quality on the button, HTC must have been aware of this from the start, I mean, they must test the product before releasing it...
I wonder is there is something you can "coat" the keys with to strengthen them? That way so that other users could prevent this.
A good idea is to tell everyone with this problem to contact HTC with pictures of the issue. If enough people complain perhaps they will do something..
htc desire would be next suffer same fate as us. Their button also using metal coating.
does anyone know if I can replace the keys by myself? and if I can, where can I buy them from??
thanks

ATRIX is my LAST Motorola product

So my phone has this problem of only intermittently vibrating when I get a text/call. So I got an RMA and sent it in. First off, the lost it, and took several days and several phone calls to find somebody who was able to locate my phone. They then told me that it was not under warranty because it was physical damage. They said the main board was bent. Somehow I was apparently able to bend the phone enough to bend the main board but not crack the screen or back or anything else. So they said they could sell me a phone for $179 (no way). Sounds like crap to me........ I'll be buying Samsung next time.

Except Samsung has always been on top of updates. The only time Samsung hasn't had a timely update was due to networks, namely AT&T, not approving of the update for a long time.
I agree! Samsung makes good phones, but the touchwiz icons make me feel like I should use velcro shoes, safety scissors, finger paints, ect.

Please help...bricked or not???

Sorry for my english but it's not my first language, even not second, so apologies.
So my problem... i don't like to post and don't post so much but i'm here every day. I have some devices and i love flashing and trying every new rom. I'm not a noob and nor dev. Just a simple user who's second life everyday is xda.
I just want to know if my HD2 is bricked or not. So the phone do not boot up, screen do not turn on, button backlight, or charging led. Nothing. It was installed with magldr. First i was thinking that battery was dead and with magldr do not charge and that's why do not boot. But no... today i have bought from somebody a docking charger with spare battery charger and 2 batteries. No luck. I have disassembled my leo and took a look in it. If i try to turn on i see that the vibration motor turns on for a half of second and than nothing happens.
I'ts not so very big problem if it is bricked (while i have a DHD, an SE xperia neoV, an asus tf101g, and next week i will buy a galaxy nexus too) but i don't want to take it in box if it can be bringed back to life. I just want to know what can cause this , if somebody knows what can i try feel free to answer.
P.S. no do not boots in bootloader also. Last time was installed with android via magldr, no OC, and all happend when i was driving my car using navigation on it. Simply turned off. It seem like the bootloader was deleted or don't know. Also battery pins checked. It can be defective mainboard or what???
Thanx in advance.

a few times on both by hd2's, I've come across a situation where some app/process hangs, the phone freezes or becomes really sluggish, and the phone starts to get hot at the bottom on the back. I always pull teh battery smartish, but perhaps yours did the same, and it burned itself out. Its well known that the hd2 suffers from heat.
Perhaps give the freezer trick a go, see what happens.

I think thats just some kind of myth. I bet I have flashed my HD2 OVER 150 times, a lot of experimenting of windows mobile, and later went on to Android. I did have a problem with a HD2 to vibrate 5/7 times and then freeze, in any way. Even when I flashed. I had trouble booting it too, but removing the battery for 30 minutes worked.
Thanks for your answer. I will contact him maybe he can help me.
I think too that the flashing limit is just a myth. I was flashing roms more than 300times and with no issues. My Leo was a survivor two times made bath and even after was fully functioning. Last months i was using just for gps and playing with roms.
If i can't fix it i want to give it for somebody from hd2 forums. If you are near Gütersloh in germany and you were contributing with something for Hd2 community feel free contact me and i will give you for free. No shipment because i can't send it, but if you are from other country and you have somebody that can send it to you tell him to come here contact me and we will see what we can do. There is the phone, 3batteries, docking station with one extra place for battery charge, original and silicon case.
I WANT TO WAIT ONE WEEK FROM NOW IF I CAN'T FIX IT I WILL TELL YOU AND EVERYBODY CAN CONTACT ME. REMEMBER THAT YOU MUST BE A DEV OR THEMER BECAUSE I WON'T GIVE IT FOR EVERYDAY USER WHO DID NOTHING FOR THE COMMUNITY. I CAN'T DONATE, LET THIS BE MY DONATION.

There is two possible causes i can think of.
and btw: the flashing counter is not a myth. the Chip counts the number of flashes. But i don't think it has a kill switch. That is bull****. It's just for HTC to tell how often it was flashed and judge what users did to it.

Source? Never heard of this before. (Also, surely only ruu based flashes would register, the firmware wouldn't see android flashes, so it would be a hugely incorrect figure)

Hi Samsamuel,
good question. It is something i came across recently when my device got killed and i bought a new one with a brick. I did a lot of research (tried to find a way to get rid of the brick myself) but since the mentioning of the counter was something of little interest to me at the time i didn't take note of where i read it. It might be only HearSay and not be a proven fact, additionally, i was thinking the same about the RUU flashes and the android flashes. Most likely only the RUU flashes are counted. Maybe the part of the chip that holds the clocks for call time counting also holds a flash counter? Something i find a reasonable assumption. Further, i read about it in the environment of the whole jtag-programming world where i think i came across a page stating that their programming box resets the flash counters. i can't remember if that was the RIFF box or some other lesser known box. The RIFF box at last does not seem to feature it if i look it up now.
So, long story short, it might also just be a marketing gag for those believing in the Myth of a killswitch. As i said, i don't believe that but think flash counters aren't that far off reality and to answer your question: i cannot prove it. I just read it somewhere.

Ok here is a random search results collection of threads with similar issues related to overheating and broken solder Points on the CPU. You can read through them to get an idea of whats coming up to you.
Number 1
Number 2
Number 3 - by far the best one on overheating and breaking/fixing the CPU solder points!
And here the Help i can offer you for the scenario where your HD2 is "just" a brick - which is way more easy to fix! This is the Guy who successfully unbricked my HD2:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/HTC-Bootload...TAG-/320848960362?pt=PDAs&hash=item4ab4169b6a
BIG RED HINT: This guy has just bought himself an Infrared soldering station which could be used to re-solder the BGA connections for the CPU if them are broken! Read more about it on Link 3 up above. That dude is MASSIVE! Respect for his work is the word of the day! If you ask that guy with the soldering station he might be interested in doing a try on your device. He's learning, you are gaining if he succeeds. If he doesn't he still learned something and you helped the community by making him smarter
And there is another one in Austria who knows more about the Device and the possibilities and he was the first one ever to mention a HTC WhiteCard (for real, i searched the net and didn't find that term anywhere), i have never heard of that before but it seems to be a universal sim card that can set any HTC device S-OFF and according to that dude it costs a sum with 5 digits and he got one. It does exactly the same as the XTC Clip. amazing story anyhow , he is called Harald Kubovy and can be contacted here: Entsperren.net
Why did i not choose him? Further away, longer wait, 5 euros more. But he seemed to know A LOT.
And one last note: i don't think it is necessary for you to come over to my place as i cannot directly help you. I am not the kinda guy who fixes hardware. I fiddle around with software a lot and i am VERY tempted to buy a RIFF Box but then again i wouldn't really know how to work it and it costs quite a sum and then it sits here and i cannot use it effectively to get my money back out of it so i'd rather not toy around with it. BUT i can let you have all my research knowledge from my own desaster last week. Read above.
Cheers mate and good luck for your Quest for salvation. PLease feel free to contact me if there are any more questions.
Good night.
I have exactly the same problem as you, I turned off my phone and since then It just wont turn back on no charging light nothing except a small vibrate for half a second when I remove the battery and reinsert it.
Have you found any solution at all?
Hello maximillion,
Read my post above yours. If you happen to be in Germany contact the Ebay guy I linked to. He's good and your phone probably is just bricked. Happens sometimes.
If you are not in Germany I recommend searching your local Ebay for someone who does JTAG repairs. Or check for the search term "riff box" and "jtag".

There is pysical a problem on the phone. I am turkish and I dont know english term of this problem.... phone case opened a little from power side. What can I do, if I sent to service, will they change it.I bought it 20 days ago. İn turkey, you can want change in 30 days.... sorry poor english....
It all depends on how this happened and how well you'll fight to get a new one! I mean if it happened because of miss usage (fell to the ground for example), I don't think they'll replace it. Even if it didn't fall, they might try to say it did to avoid replacing it, so here comes your fighting and convincing skills!
Try your luck, and hopefully you'll mange to get it replaced.

Here, quote from user manual for sgs4:
A small gap appears around the outside of the device case
• This gap is a necessary manufacturing feature and some minor rocking or vibration of parts may occur.
• Over time, friction between parts may cause this gap to expand slightly.

My very good experience with HTC customer care in Europe

Hey guys,
About 3 months ago I purchased an HTC One as I admired the level of craftsmanship put into the device. Unfortunately, the first device came with a minor protrusion of the screen at the top right corner. Because that point is exactly where a right handed person touches the phone to access the notification bar. I tried to return the phone but unfortunately my provider would not take it back and give me another, as it had been a little over 14 days since I had purchased it.
I went ahead and contacted htc customer care, who went out of their way to make an RMA for me and took care of the replacement process. I was very grateful, but unfortunately the second phone that arrived had also a cosmetic fault, a discoloration of the back of the phone that was apparent under mild light conditions.
Again I contacted HTC who replaced the second phone as well without causing me any further trouble. The next phone that arrived turned out to be fine. As originally disappointed as I was by the relatively poor manufacturing control of the early HTC one phones, the customer care of HTC completely won me over with their supportive stance and I felt it's worth writing a few words about. The morals of the story are, firstly that you shouldn't accept a device you're not happy with (especially at this price range!), but also that it's not just the product at hand, but the after sales care that matters too.

I find this quite incredible, given my, still ongoing experience of HTC UK. What a difference. Checkout my UK experience.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2425001
I must re-iterate that I WAS a HTC fan, and have had excellent service from HTC UK previously when I owned a desire, but my recent experience is appalling. Being a fan I wanted the HTC One. I also previously authored threads detailing how great HTC repair were when I had problems with my desire.
I am somewhat relieved that there is good service elsewhere. I have exchanged tweets with HTC senior execs with regards my HTC experience and have a personal commitment to action it (no news yet). I'll tweet this thread to him also. Take a look at the pics of my "repaired" device delivered yesterday from uk repair. Thanks for the thread. I was sure that this was a UK specific problem, and it appears it is.

Hey mate we know you have had bad experience but what are you going to do cry all over xda. Sometimes bad experience happens with the best. Just dont bother so much. Everything will be all right in the end and keep your grief limited. It looks like you are now on a mission to single handedly drown htc

When you pay 515€ for a device that's supposed to be perfect and it turns out its garbage you shouldn't sit still and accept it .. you should do exactly what this guy is doing ... Unless you found your money in the garbage or you were born with a golden spoon in your mouth ... I would totally do the same .. and won't stop till I complete my mission ...

I totally agree you should fight but its inappropriate to fight at every single xda thread as its not htc official forum. He should probably lodge a consumer complaint if they he not satisfied. He must blog about it but thats not a way to go in everywhere and say its happening like this. And i paid full 43000INR thats 720$. That too i didnt get money from dad it was my 2years savings from pocket money. Flaming every thread will not offer you solution to your problem.

Hardly every xda thread, and they are related, but point taken. Im confident that HTC are in the process of resolving my problem so no more posts in this thread for me. I wont apologize for posting in this thread though, because I know that senior HTC eyes have read both threads and that both are possibly relevant.

The One X had a major design flaw, though only apperant after prolonged usage and only with people with fitting jeans but in all honesty the crap people are giving for these minor gaps/misaligments is just absurd, no other phone is looked at under such aesthetic scrutiny and almost no one would notice unloess you visited a forum like XDA
If you bought a One you must like HTC in some way but then to demand like an x number of exchanges until the gaps are truely microscopic will drive the company which makes the phones you like to bankrupcy...

why make a phone and market it with its flawless desing then ?? just make a simple good smart phone like Samsung ... i don't buy HTC for the looks .. i buy it for the sense ... but don't go market a phone based on its amazing looks ... then u get surprises like these .. kind of like lying !! which is not cool !
