I have a G Ttablet and today received a Nook Color. Since I live in the boonies, my fast internet connection consists of a Verizon USB wireless CDMA modem. From there I set up an ad hoc wifi network on my laptop.
My problem is that my Nook cannot see this ad hoc network, and I can't even get past the registration phase on my Nook color. I find this very odd because I don't have any trouble with my G Tab and haven't for the past month. When I input the SSID of my network, the Nook tells me it is out of range, almost like it isn't even searching for it. I tried powering it off and on and going through the part where it scans for networks but still no luck. My ad hoc network is not secured so that's not the problem.
B&N is no help because their advice is basically to take it to a B&N store or somewhere else and connect there. But, as I have said, I live in the boonies and this is not a very easy option for me.
Does anyone have any ideas on why the Nook can't see the network, even though my G Tab can? Is the wifi radio in my Nook broken? I read on here that Androids have trouble with ad hocs so is that the reason? But it's not like it just can't connect, but that it can't even see the network. Is there any other choice other than getting in the car and driving 2 hours to a public wifi hotspot just to register this nook? And even if I do, does this mean that it is a useless toy at home?
Thanks.
I'm not sure what the issue is, I always thought Android did have ad hoc troubles?
Anyone care to correct me if I'm wrong?
Here is some info. I believe once you registered your nook, you would be fine. Bummer about driving that 2 hours.

Ok. So I can't make my nook see my ad hoc network. But I found out how to skip the registration process, and I managed to get into the nook. For those interested it is very well described over at the nookdevs website. After a careful look over what B&N included on there, I think I will go ahead and flash a new ROM. Or I might root it. Maybe. Probably I will sleep on it. I really would like to bring it up to date before I start changing things.
I am hoping that ROMS like CM7 have fixed the Wifi problem on the nook.

While that may be true for stock Android which I don't know, it most certainly is not true for custom ROMs. As I mentioned, I have my G Tablet working just fine on my ad hoc network.

Yup, the stock ROM from B&N won't even show ad hoc networks. There's some instructions on http://nookdevs.com/Portal:NookColor aboit enabling ad hoc on stock, but that will likely require rooting and adb access first. Both of those should be covered there as well.
I'm pretty sure that CM7 has ad hoc working. I would recommend installing that to a class 2 SD card, you can leave the stock rom on the internal flash chip (emmc) untouched. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, CM7 must have ad hoc working because that's the base on my G Tab (though I'm not sure about Nook color, but I think it must), and it runs smoothly most of the time. The times when there are problems are my fault for forgetting and not turning on ICS properly on my PC.
If it's working I need some help...I'm running Phiremod 6.3. Which, as I understand it, is based off of CM7 7.0.3. Ad-hoc does NOT work for me. I've seen posts and such stating that it does. Am I missing something? If not, I think it's debatable as to whether or not ad hoc is working with the latest CM7 or Phiremod.
I have searched the web and cannot find anything that works. I have the a500 and go to Penn State. My EVO 4G connects with the free wifi there with no problem but my tablet will not work.
My tablet will connect but the indicator on the bottom right that is normally blue will be gray. It will have both up and down arrows blinking but it stays gray and says it is connected.
I rooted my tablet and tried the adhoc patch but that didn't do anything to help. I have no problem connecting at home. I am currently using my evo as a wifi tether for the tablet while at school but it kills my phones battery. Is there anything else I can try?
my first move
First go into your wifi settings and forget the network settings - then try again.
If that does not work - contact the support people for the network you are trying to connect to.
So when I wifi tether off my phone (iPhone 4s, I know... Blasphemy) the chrome browser and AOSP browser work great, very responsive and quick connection. The issue is that I am unable to connect to google play store or Gapps while tethering. It's strange that the Internet browser is working but these other apps will not recognize the connection. Anyone have an explanation for this or a method to rectify?
I am trying to make my Verizon Razr phone become a wifi hotspot for the Nexus 7. I have Foxfi and PDAnet installed on the Razr and the Razr is rooted. I was using this setup with great success tethering LTE into my Transformer TF300 tablet without issues.
I sold the Transformer tablet and now have a Nexus 7 tablet. I can see the Foxfi SSID and connect to it. I can enter my password and it connect with no issues. I get a hash code and everything. However the Nexus 7 shows white Wifi bars that never turn blue, like it does on my home network. So it connects just fine, gets an IP address but I have no internet access.
I was reading about getting sqlite and changing a value in a file for verizon phones, in another thread but the thread only stated that I could find the info easily by searching- and I found nothing in my search. I been searching for a way for over an hour and haven't found anything that was helpful.
I have no interest in bluetooth tethering (too slow) and my Nexus7 isn't rooted yet.
Any ideas?
SOLVED
I rebooted my Razr and changed the name of the network SSID in Foxfi and was able to connect and get internet access.
I am guessing clearing the cache would have worked too.. something left over from connecting to the other tablet I'm assuming.
I know this issue has been brought up multiple times before with Android devices but please hear me out. I have an Xperia Play (rooted) on Page Plus and would like to be able to tether it with my TN7 (rooted). If I use the built in hotspot on the phone the TN7 sees it and connects with no problem however I get the "This device is currently not authorized to access Dial-Up Networking services, please contact your wireless service provider for more details." when I try to access a webpage. I can't seem to find a workaround for this. I can also use Barnacle on the phone which works fine with my PC but the TN7 can't see it because it broadcasts an ad-hoc network and Android doesn't like that. I tried the solution brought out here http://szym.net/2010/12/adhoc-wifi-in-android/ and here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-s/help/solved-how-to-connect-to-ad-hoc-ibss-t1591207 but the edited file is about half the size of the stock one on the TN7 and once I copy it over the wifi is stuck at turning on until I put the stock file back and restart. I see the explanations of what needs to be changed in wpa_supplicant but I don't know what program I need to open and view the file contents. If I open it in notepad or even emacs its all gibberish and random characters, not what's shown in the examples. Can anyone shed some light on this issue and please tell or show me what do I need to do to make my TN7 connect to an ad-hoc network.
Of course, if anybody knows how to get an Xperia Play to tether with an infrastructure network that would be equally useful.
I ended up flashing Cm10 MaXeD http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2427874 to my Xperia Play and using the WiFi Tether app. I set the device profile as "Google NexusOne", enabled WiFi-drive reload, and disabled WiFi-drive reload 2. Now it broadcasts a functional infrastructure network that my TN7 can see and use.
