I have a G Ttablet and today received a Nook Color. Since I live in the boonies, my fast internet connection consists of a Verizon USB wireless CDMA modem. From there I set up an ad hoc wifi network on my laptop.
My problem is that my Nook cannot see this ad hoc network, and I can't even get past the registration phase on my Nook color. I find this very odd because I don't have any trouble with my G Tab and haven't for the past month. When I input the SSID of my network, the Nook tells me it is out of range, almost like it isn't even searching for it. I tried powering it off and on and going through the part where it scans for networks but still no luck. My ad hoc network is not secured so that's not the problem.
B&N is no help because their advice is basically to take it to a B&N store or somewhere else and connect there. But, as I have said, I live in the boonies and this is not a very easy option for me.
Does anyone have any ideas on why the Nook can't see the network, even though my G Tab can? Is the wifi radio in my Nook broken? I read on here that Androids have trouble with ad hocs so is that the reason? But it's not like it just can't connect, but that it can't even see the network. Is there any other choice other than getting in the car and driving 2 hours to a public wifi hotspot just to register this nook? And even if I do, does this mean that it is a useless toy at home?
Thanks.
I'm not sure what the issue is, I always thought Android did have ad hoc troubles?
Anyone care to correct me if I'm wrong?
Here is some info. I believe once you registered your nook, you would be fine. Bummer about driving that 2 hours.

Ok. So I can't make my nook see my ad hoc network. But I found out how to skip the registration process, and I managed to get into the nook. For those interested it is very well described over at the nookdevs website. After a careful look over what B&N included on there, I think I will go ahead and flash a new ROM. Or I might root it. Maybe. Probably I will sleep on it. I really would like to bring it up to date before I start changing things.
I am hoping that ROMS like CM7 have fixed the Wifi problem on the nook.

While that may be true for stock Android which I don't know, it most certainly is not true for custom ROMs. As I mentioned, I have my G Tablet working just fine on my ad hoc network.

Yup, the stock ROM from B&N won't even show ad hoc networks. There's some instructions on http://nookdevs.com/Portal:NookColor aboit enabling ad hoc on stock, but that will likely require rooting and adb access first. Both of those should be covered there as well.
I'm pretty sure that CM7 has ad hoc working. I would recommend installing that to a class 2 SD card, you can leave the stock rom on the internal flash chip (emmc) untouched. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, CM7 must have ad hoc working because that's the base on my G Tab (though I'm not sure about Nook color, but I think it must), and it runs smoothly most of the time. The times when there are problems are my fault for forgetting and not turning on ICS properly on my PC.
If it's working I need some help...I'm running Phiremod 6.3. Which, as I understand it, is based off of CM7 7.0.3. Ad-hoc does NOT work for me. I've seen posts and such stating that it does. Am I missing something? If not, I think it's debatable as to whether or not ad hoc is working with the latest CM7 or Phiremod.

so with my minimal knowledge of phone stuffs ive kinda learned that when i run the wireless tether for root app on my phone it uses ad hoc to supply other computers with internet... basically im asking, will my evo be able to supply my xoom with internet?
Not at the moment, no support for Ad-Hoc networks in HC, not sure if there ever will be - very annoying.
I'm not sure but I believe there is a new version of Wireless Tether that will allow such a connection. When I first tried the Kindle connecting to my DX, it wouldn't connect. With the new version, it does.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
My Xoom connects to my DX with no problems.
Go download Wireless Tether from the website. The experimental one is called Wifi Tether now. Works like a charm for infrastructure mode so that the Xoom can tether with your phone. Also Bluetooth seems to work fine as well.

Is the Wireless tether for the phone or the Xoom (or both)? I need an option for the iPhone in case the steps posted here won't work!
is this an app that enables ad-hoc detection on the Xoom,
or
does it just provide a full wifi hotspot tethering feature for Android devices?
I also use an iPhone which supplies an ad-hoc hotspot connection that I need my Xoom to recognize and connect to.
So does that mean you got it to work that way? Is the app available through the Market?
No its not available in the market. Google wireless tether and look for wifi tether. The new app sends the signal via infrastructure mode. I think it applies to certain phone like Droid X and EVO.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
The Wireless Tether app is ran on the host phone wanting to be turned into a wifi hotspot. There are certain phones that run in Ad-Hoc mode in default (aka Droid 1) and the only option to tether the Xoom to them is via bluetooth. As others have said, the new version "WiFi Tether" is apparently enabling infrastructure mode rather than Ad-hoc mode, something that the Xoom can actually connect to.
There is no app that you install on the Xoom. When the WiFi Tether is ran on the host device, the Xoom just connects to it as a WiFi router and works just fine (or bluetooth if thats what you're doing).
So OP, if you can't get the new version of WiFi tether to work for you and your Xoom, try the Bluetooth tethering option, it's been shown in detail in a thread here how to do it, and it should work just fine.

The app is for android, and for the host device not the Xoom, so you'll need to Bluetooth tether your iPhone.
wpa_supplicant
I understand exactly what the OP is talking about, as i'm trying to do the same thing. What makes matters worse, is that ad-hoc connections ARE possible in android. Meaning android can connect to ad-hoc networks, but it requires swapping out the wpa_suppplicant file in system/bin with a modified one that doesn't filter out ad-hoc networks.
i've even tested this on my EVO, and it connects to other android phones incapable of broadcasting in infrastructure mode, it even connects to my ubuntu netbook broadcasting in ad-hoc...
(if you want to see what i'm talking, just search the forums for wpa_supplicant, something will turn up )
I've tried doing the same "fix" with my xoom, but it doesn't take. Using ADB or root explorer, i've replaced the orignal (making sure to save a copy just in case) and fixed permissions to 775, but it doesn't take. The wifi antenna will turn on, but it doesn't find anything once being replaced, not even saved networks or access points. I can get wifi back by restoring my backup, but i'm at a loss as to why it doesn't work on the xoom (3.0) but does with my evo (2.3).
as a side note, i'm using the right replacement for the wpa version returned by entering
"wpa_supplicant -v" in a terminal emulator or adb. It returns version v0.6.10 and there is a working, modified, v0.6.10 that should make things work, but doesn't....
anyway, if anyone has any input, i would love to hear it!
I am in the same boat. Regardless of whatever permission settings I have tried (mentioned in the dev forums that I can't yet post in), I still get a dead wifi with the new supplicant file.
Ah, I feel better now. It must have been the supplicant file, as I found this other one and it worked without permission modifications first time out.
You will have to google "xoom supplicant" and use the file found on the first response (android.net)-I can't post the link- the downside to attitude having, overlord type forums is inability for new users to provide any help, or at least with any convenience.
i try connecting my xoom to my computer, and it wouldn't work. i have the "Intel My Wifi Technology" but each time i set up a connection, the xoom finds it, but will take like a minute trying to connect and all i see on the xoom is "Obtaining IP address". it shows on my computer that a new device is connected. maybe this only works computer to computer. cuz i have had success with another laptop connecting to my computer with no problem.
I am using the Launchpad kernel and the WPASupplicant file and am connected to my phone's ad-Hoc network now. I used the beta Wi-Fi Tether and it worked great, but crashed my Samsung Galaxy S at least twice a day. So I installed the WPA file without setting any special permissions, just used Root Explorer to copy it an it worked fine.
Is there a way to connect on a ad-hoc hostet by a laptop (win7) yet?
That would be interesting, cause if it work this way, it will work for every phone or something else!
Hey Guys,
i am having a little problem. i am using the Intel My Wifi Technology. and i don't know if i am doiing something wrong or this is just not possible. but i try connecting my xoom to my laptop, and it is not working or connecting. i get a message on the xoom that say's Obtaining IP address", but nothing happen on the xoom. is this not yet possible on the xoom. i don't know if this is consider ad-hoc network or not, cuz i am new to all this.
but here is the link to intel website for the program i am using as a wifi hotspot.

and here is a video of what the program does.

anyone with knowlwdge on this please help me understand what i am doing wrong or not doing. or even if this is a possibility.
If you're not opposed to rooting your Xoom, here's another option. I just unlocked and rooted my WiFi-only Xoom yesterday, and inserted the supplicant file in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033314
It works like a charm! I'm running a WinMo Touch Pro 2 with WMWiFiRouter, and the Xoom now sees and properly connects to Ad Hoc networks. And, it still works with all other networks.
I don't know which way you prefer to attack the problem (from the Xoom or the phone), but I've been thrilled ever since I got all this done yesterday. Everything else on the Xoom is great, and now I've got the working SD card as well.

Is it right that you host a Wifi on your computer and tether internet to you tablet? I think its the usual problem android and ad-hoch, witch not work!
I just took the plunge in to sd android on my TMOUSA HTC HD2.
I am using AmeriCanAndroid all stock HD2.
Previously I was able to tether to a vista laptop with wm6.5 fine. I am trying to use the wifi tether on the the android side now.
My goal is to tether to a unrooted Acer A500 Iconia. I am not sure if it is possible. I have read a ton and can't seem to find a clear answer to this problem. Several people talk about rooting the A500 so it can see a ad-hoc wifi tether. Unless I misunderstood I also read that a rooted android phone could be a real wifi hotspot not just an ad-hoc connection. I am not sure if I am mistaken or not. If someone could clear this up it would be great.
I am not sure if I am doing the tethering correctly on android. I setup the tethering with a SSID, encryption and the like. the A500 sees the wifi SSID but can't seem to obtain a IP address.
The odd thing is that when I start the wifi tether the yellow wifi icon starts in the top right corner of the phone. Then another wifi looking icon starts next to it. it says tethering and wifi hot spot. I have tried using it also but the system locks and reboots. if I don't mess with the second tethering and wife hotspot it doesn't reboot, but i still can't connect.
The strange thing is that the main tethering lets me setup SSID and the like but the tethering and wife hotspot will let me setup a different SSID. I am not sure why they aren't connected.
I thought this all had to do with the unrooted A500 but I tried the same windows laptop that I had tethered to with wm6.5 and it can see the wifi on the phone but can't connect.
Thanks for any ideas.
Ok I run XDA WiFI sharing on my smart phone.
I use this to access the internet on all of the computers in my house.
Living in the middle of nowhere I have few options.
My new nook color says that the XDA is not in range..... Even though my phone is sitting right here next to me and next to my laptop that has no problem picking up the signal. (using my laptop now typing this!)
How do I fix this?

WiFi settings... forget the network and let it find it again.
If that doesn't work try forgetting all remembered networks and then rebooting.

I'm afraid you have a smart phone that only sets up an "ad hoc" network. You need to have an "infrastructure" network for the Nook Color to see it and connect. I have the same problem with my HTC Hero phone--the wireless tethering works great with my laptops, but my Nook cannot see it.
There have been a few postings about this issue and there was a fix for earlier Nook software versions, but not the current version.

Any idea if the Nook with CM7 (B199) can do an ad-hoc network? I have a Garmin Nuvi-295W (wifi only, no BT). I may have to look at a micro AP for my car so these devices can talk.
(Yes, I've searched...)
I see several people "working" in Ad-hoc mode. But none of them actually directly reference Barnacle. I've been messing with theis for over a week, and can't seem to get this figured out, or if it's a lost cause, and I need to get a new phone.
I've got a Sony X10 Mini Pro- infrastructure mode is still a ways off, and I'm running the new Taboonay 3.2 on the Acer. I have Ad-Hoc, I can connect, if I manually specify an IP- DHCP never connects.
There is no surfage, though. I can't even ping the IP of my phone. I show connected, get the up and down arrows, like it's connected, but no throughput.
Has anyone actually gotten this to work? Do you think it's a barnacle problem, or is it something I can tweak in the Acer?
I have the same question. I havent been able to get this to work.
Barnacle worked for me in the past.they did a update then no more worked. I switched to wifi tether.and I think its better.I even donated money to the other.
Sent them several emails with not one single reply.kinda sad but its life.
works for me from myn my samsung intercept.
Question can you connect to your phone using another devive like a laptop?
Does your acer even see the barnacle in the wifi settings?
If not make sure the adhoc patch is installed it think when i went to taboonay i also had to reinstall the patch.
Yes, Barnacle does work with a lappy, and yes, the tab does see the barnacle ad-hoc, it even connects- if given a static IP. Just not able to negotiate a network connection- no ping, destination host unreachable.
Try wifi tether.I had the same issue .wifi tether is faster as well and free also.
My phone is x10 mini running on cyanogenmod 7 2.0.7.
i am using barnacle tether on it and it becomes a ad-hoc hotspot. THe problem is my iconia a500 has issues working with the connection. I can see the hotspot (i have changed the wpa supplicant file to that of xoom available) so i get a *before the name but as soon as i enter the password of wep and click on connect button,it shows connecting and then obtaining ip address and that never stops. on clicking on that it shows that the signal is poor and decibel = -1. What the ****!
Please, can anyone help me out here?

erica_renee,
I am so glad that you posted this. Even happier that I remembered it. Today around 4:30pm my dsl died. Called in and it is something that effects my little area. And of course they are working on it. Funny how the phone still works, but anyway... This was especially annoying because a friend gave to me a HTC Aria with a cracked screen. I'd just repaired it, started rooting it and installing CM7. The timing was typical.
I was using Barnacle to tether my pc, a tablet and another phone. What's worse I am in an AT&T Edge only area. So it was PAINFUL at best. I finally remembered your suggestion, that you mentioned a speed improvement, and also that I had installed WiFiTether after I read that.
Well I ain't gonna lie and say that I was able to browse on one device while I netflix'd on another while downloading on the other... But I can easily be getting something from the market on one of the devices and still manage to browse on my pc. Which is a terrific improvement to what Barnacle was doing for me.
Barnacle was like dial up on a bad day. WiFiTether is easily twice as fast as the old dial up ever was. Maybe more.
So you really saved me from going nuts. Thanks so much! And I'll go ahead and say thanks for my Brother in town. If that hadn't worked I would have been camped out on his lawn modding a phone...
anyone have adhoc wifi mode working????
I'm also wondering...
But in the mean time, you can use FoxFi on your phone and Bluetooth tether it to your Nexus 7 via PdaNet Tablet.
ya....my media server runs in ad hoc mode......it will be a big bummer if I can't get it to work
anyone??
I also need this as well. My research suggests the wpa_supplicant file requires modification to enable ad hoc. I don't have the skills to accomplish this. Maybe a dev can help out.

Ad hoc is a spec that is archaic, and really only supported through 802.11g. For 802.11n chips like the one that N7 is using, I don't recommend using ad hoc before there is no guarantee of interoperability. There is a new WiFi feature called wifi direct that is supported in jellybean that can do what Yu need but it depends if you have this supported on the other side as well.
Thank you. I do understand the downside of ad hoc but due to circumstances beyond my control, I am only able to access the internet via a
ad hoc WiFi connection when I am mobile.
my kindle fire on CM9 had the same issue
I way playing with a Nexus 7 today in store.
checked to see if it would tether to my iphone 4s
newp, same issue, no adhoc
would have bought it there and then otherwise.
Same issue here. Just got a Nexus 7 and didn't know Android still doesn't support connecting to ad-hoc networks. Anyone know if there are any devs actively working on this?
I may have a solution. On prime, we had a similar situation where they nerfed the ad hoc tethering capability For a few firmware versions. How it was solved was by replacing a certain wifi supplicant file. There's a good chance it might work on this device also. Its pretty simple to apply. Here is the link to the thread and a link is in there also to the wifi supplicant file to Insert in your device. Its worth a shot. I believe you must be rooted though to make it work as it requires changing permissions of the newer file.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438297
Also a good chance one of our custom roms for nexus 7 will add in ad hoc tethering ability. Just ask if it supports it or politely ask for feature to be added.
i too would love and appreciate if anyone could get ad-hoc working. my old phone can only make an ad-hoc network for tethering, and i'd like to be able to tether it if i need to
Also would like ad-hoc so I can connect to my quadcopter.
Are we still in the dark on this one? No one has a solution besides Bluetooth DUN?
Anyone know of a rom that supports ad-hoc?
FOUND A WINNER!!!
This free app works for wifi tethering in "WiFi HotSpot" mode with password protection! All on stock 4.2.1
I hope that y'all find it as useful as I do. I see a paid version by the same Dev, but I don't really get what the difference is. This one seems to be a full version AFAICT.

Several of the posts here address people's desire to tether their phone to their N7. And while the app I posted a link to doesn't help us connect to ad hoc networks, it may very well help some in this thread. I don't see how that could be misconstrued as spam.
Hello
I've been doing some research since I got my n7 wifi, I need to connect it with my nokia 808 with joikuspot, so far I got connected and some apps are working but others dont, it requires to root your device, install a custom kernel and copy a patched wpa_supplicant, the main problem seems to be that the android kernel doesnt support at all ad hoc (IBSS) networks, looking for an explanation at code.google.com even the developers complain that the android SDK lacks support to develop apps with ad hoc networks, AFAIK we need some android guru who can compile the ad hoc module into the kernel and patch the wpa_supplicant so it wont filter out ad hoc networks, you can check my findings here.
