Hi all, have somebody thought about simulating the accelerometer using the phone camera? It's possible?
I couldn't find anything about this, sorry, but i'd be really happy to know that there's someone coding something like this...
PS: sorry for my poor english
i dont see this happening at all... i mean a image is produced by using light... how would that information tell u which way or which angle the phone is on :S

Ok, but as the image moves the phone could know how am i moving it
Theoretically, it is possible. It would just be a huge battery sucker and not too accurate. I came across this game a long time ago, back when I still had my Titan (no accelerometer). It is called 3D Lawn Darts. It uses the camera to control your throws. Check it out:

It could work but only in a room covered with reference points all over the walls and floors like they use in 3D capture! LOL
I think the phone proccessor would choke on the proccessing! lol
there's a free app (i think) called CCSnake. Search for it. If you can't find it. Then search for Camera Controlled Snake. I tried it but the controls are not that good.

well not really.
Camera take as picture, then asks the user to set a referance point. somthing that stands out. It takes detaisl of that area (color shape, etc)
all further images are taken and referanced to that point. and the program then knows which way the PPC was turned. if you want rotaion then you just need two points.
For all movements just 3 referance points are needed.
This is very basic movemnets and your limited to the area you are in as the camera must see the original points. but it would work.
i saerched for this a long time and tought: maybe you can do it with an other part of the phone.
or maybe you can make a program to use this as a normal g-sensor with new accelerometer software.

There was a game that I had on my old Motorola E815 that did just this. I think it was like a marble tilt game...it worked fairly well as long as you didn't move too fast and it wasn't too dark (or light for that matter, as the camera on the E815 was really mediocre).
Update :
I just wanted to make something cheerful, Since we don't actually have such wire or cable.
As the commenters said, I used Mobiola Web Camera For Windows Mobile
Sorry for the disappointment I may have caused

Since it is darkened, this signifies that you are hiding something.
I would say you are using something like MyMobiler, to display your phone's screen on the computer monitor.

Nope. No such possibility. When it comes to Audio/Video, the cable either works or it doesn't. There is no "half-way".
So you're using a tool like MyMobiler / Pocket Controller - what's so special?
Am i missing something here? :|

Ok i'm confused! What was this supposed to signify TV-OUT? It's titled streaming screen to Monitor which was happening and can be achieved by using MyMobiler... Worst prank award goes to...

Really? I dont see it available I want downloadable maps. Is that in there?
Yeah, "improved offline caching". It's clearly vector-based now. Zooming is very smooth.
its available for me.. running the new market
Doesn't look like there is any 3D building data though. I was looking forward to that... but it's still a pretty great update to an already amazing app.
Edit: Ahh, it does! I just wasn't zoomed in enough.
Just got it.
Yay

Is the twist working for everybody (two finger rotate).
Yup. No problems.
i can do the 2 finger rotate, but how do i get the buildings in 3d?
My compass works visibly great with the new Google Maps

make sure you are in the regular street map view (not terrain or satellite) and also, you need to be in a city that actually has 3d shapes. If you are looking at where you live, it could very well be that they don't have that information. If you go to new york city and zoom in you will see 3d buildings. It's really sweet, I love being able to change the perspective from top to a side profile.
What jinx said.

you were right, i went to new york and can see them in 3d
how do i see them in a side profile as you mentioned?
EDIT: figured it out. i had to exit out and relaunch it and use 2 fingers to swipe up and down
Everybody come to New York and say hello. I'm the little Guy with the finger.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.
this is the best, so smooth and the caching makes it more faster. Google is the best!

Offline maps = instant win, considering I have no data. Let's just hope the GPS holds up.
Nice Google.
Can someone post the apk.... Pls

Hi All,
Google has just pushed the new google maps v5.0.0 3D in MARKET. I have update mine and now its working fine. Now the question is for Navigation. We need new version of BrutMaps.
Thanks,
Mahesh
New version is super slick. Vector graphics make scrolling around maps so much faster with no tiling. Edges of maps are blurry and come into focus as you scroll around.
Download it now!
what i dont understand is maps is an google app but its smoother, better on iphone.
Can someone tell me why i can't find the update in the market on my Desire? I live in Europe, Lithuania...

Thanks for the link. Shoud i just install this on top of my current gmaps version, or shoud i remove the current versio somehow before installing? And still, is there a reason that an update doesn't appear in the market?

For sure But like everyone expect are this buildings only in the USA (I didn't found them outside). But you can still tilt and rotate the map (but also the terrain layer stays flat).
Swipe
Everything is working pretty fine, the new features are awesome but - there's always a but - I can't make the two finger swipe thing. Is it working for you? I just try to make it and it zooms instead of turning around. Anyone has an idea about this?
Same here, I can tilt but I cannot get rotation
I can use the two finger gesture to tilt the map but no way to rotate it. Is there anyone can do it? how to do it?
Rotate with fingers is not Desire and Nexus One possible unfortunately. Our toys are not 100% multi-touch capable.

Press the compass on the top right twice, you'll see the rotation. 3d feature is for some cities for now e.g. Oslo

It works on Sense HD ROMs AFAIK, don't know how well though.
But it's clear: Desire doesn't really have multitouch capability. I'm really glad the 3D-Gesture works though!
The Desire's touchpanel gets confused when you cross an axis with two fingers at the same time.
Not that big of an issue, IMO. The biggest improvement in the new Google Maps are the vector graphics.

Ok, so I don't buy a cell phone for the calculator function...but really, is this it for the built in calculator?
No memory, no reciprocal, no nothing really. I know I can download a million different ones, but I'm not missing anything am I? One of the most advanced phones in the world is beat by a 99cent calculator?
Only thing else I could tell you is that there's an advanced tab if you swipe from right to left with sine, cosine, natural log, etc. But yeah that's pretty much it for the stock calculator. I don't ever use it because I have a TI-89 on mine and that's what I use all the time. It's actually better than my actual TI-89 because I can over clock the emulator CPU so it'll run around 3 times faster than my actual 89.

I love my TI-89t. Had never looked for an emulator for android before, but that's awesome.
In response to the original question: I would say that the best value of Android is the fact that it was designed to be modular. Back before the G1 came out, I can remember watching a video by the engineers which touted the ability to replace any app on the system. This was imho the revolutionary idea that put Android on the map. I think this is a good example of this philosophy in action. If you don't like the default, you are free to, and they have made it easy to, change it.

Thanks, I just downloaded it. I like the layout of RealCalc better, but Mobicalc is nice because it shows you the history of your inputs.
I've been using calculator++ as well lately. Love the multiple swipe actions on the keys.
