Really? I dont see it available I want downloadable maps. Is that in there?

Yeah, "improved offline caching". It's clearly vector-based now. Zooming is very smooth.

its available for me.. running the new market

Doesn't look like there is any 3D building data though. I was looking forward to that... but it's still a pretty great update to an already amazing app.
Edit: Ahh, it does! I just wasn't zoomed in enough.

Just got it.

Yay

Is the twist working for everybody (two finger rotate).

Yup. No problems.

i can do the 2 finger rotate, but how do i get the buildings in 3d?

My compass works visibly great with the new Google Maps

make sure you are in the regular street map view (not terrain or satellite) and also, you need to be in a city that actually has 3d shapes. If you are looking at where you live, it could very well be that they don't have that information. If you go to new york city and zoom in you will see 3d buildings. It's really sweet, I love being able to change the perspective from top to a side profile.

What jinx said.

you were right, i went to new york and can see them in 3d
how do i see them in a side profile as you mentioned?
EDIT: figured it out. i had to exit out and relaunch it and use 2 fingers to swipe up and down

Everybody come to New York and say hello. I'm the little Guy with the finger.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.

this is the best, so smooth and the caching makes it more faster. Google is the best!

Nice Google.

Google Maps

Never seen this posted here because, and I didn't the answer with search.
Why does Google Maps not auto-turn? It does on the iPhone 3GS and 4, yet not on Android. Android is made by google. :|
Is it because of the compass in the iphone; does the evo not have a compass?
Auto-turn??????
I think he means that it doesn't change orientation when you turn, north is always up. We have turn by turn nav though.

That's my biggest gripe with the evo..well, that and the battery. I wish google maps orientated in the direction you are facing like the Iphone does....I did find an app called Rmaps that does it, but it is definitely not as polished as the Iphone. Seems strange that a google phone would not have included it?!

While the gnav is super cool, especially in places that you haven't drove before, but a lot of the time, If I'm trying to get somewhere locally, I just want to see the map because I already know the area, but the damn maps never move.

Polished? Maybe things are different with the new iPhone, but I have the 3GS, and unless I was walking, it virtually never oriented in the same direction I was going. It was usually about 90 degrees off.
The Navigation app uses GMaps and orients with you.
It is the Polish for driving.

Compass moves to indicate what direction you are going not where North is.
Listen to the guy and just click the dang compass! This toggles the map from top-down north orientation to a 3d directional orientation. You must be moving to see the change.

Use navigate instead of maps. Then you will see a compass.

That's where the confusion is--there are THREE options in gmaps--map, directions and navigate. Map does not have a compass and does not give you turn-by-turn directions, directions is just the text listing and navigate is the turn-by-turn with voice directions and the compass. And it all works (even the compass switching)!!!

new maps, on n1 ?

we've all seen the cool new features of gmaps on the nexus S, but where is the 3d feature on the nexus one ? did i miss a function/feature of it ? is it in 4.7.0 and i overlooked it ?

The 3D feature is in maps 5.0 not 4.7. Google demoed the feature on a nexus s running maps 5.0. Maps 5.0 isn't released yet. According to Google it should be in a couple of days.

I'm guessing it will come with Gingerbread for the N1, and the update will hit the market for other phones about the same time.
I just downloaded the update and the 2 finger swipe works on my N1!!! ive been playing around with the new maps update for a couple of minutes now lol it just look sos cool in 3D with the buildings popping up
The 3d effect works for you? How??
With two fingers swipe up or down. Also press the crosshair icon in the top right.

I have no idea i was reading that we wouldnt have that effect but i tried it to see if it works and it does!! also if you click on the top right GPS icon 2 times it does it but not ll the way. Im on MIUI with the new market hack. the only gesture that doesnt work is the twisting gesture
You're right it does work even with the two finger pulldown thingy
The feature that doesn't work is two-finger rotation, everything else is fine, as far as I can tell

What I'm curious about is offline map caching. Is there a way to get that to work?

That works automatically. The only options (in the map settings More -> Cache Settings) are to enable prefetching of map data even when you're not on a wifi connection, and to clear the cache.
You can test it by browsing around on a map, then turning on airplane mode. The map will have been cached and you can continue to view the cached map content.
Note that the caching is supposedly quite clever. It prefetches and caches data in the background for the map areas that you view most often or are near your current location.
Okay I'm laughing at myself hysterically right now reading the comments of how to get this 3D effect and me trying to figure it out. Yes two finger swipe down to show more of a 3-D side platform (not really 3D, but eh.. not meant for N1?). Someone mentioned about pressing the crosshair like icon to view in a more 3D structure, i would more call that a compass logo and imo its more like a built in compass feature that moves along as your phone rotates NSWE, pretty cool.

Google Maps v5.0.0

Hi All,
Google has just pushed the new google maps v5.0.0 3D in MARKET. I have update mine and now its working fine. Now the question is for Navigation. We need new version of BrutMaps.
Thanks,
Mahesh
New version is super slick. Vector graphics make scrolling around maps so much faster with no tiling. Edges of maps are blurry and come into focus as you scroll around.
Download it now!
what i dont understand is maps is an google app but its smoother, better on iphone.
Can someone tell me why i can't find the update in the market on my Desire? I live in Europe, Lithuania...

For sure But like everyone expect are this buildings only in the USA (I didn't found them outside). But you can still tilt and rotate the map (but also the terrain layer stays flat).
Swipe
Everything is working pretty fine, the new features are awesome but - there's always a but - I can't make the two finger swipe thing. Is it working for you? I just try to make it and it zooms instead of turning around. Anyone has an idea about this?
Same here, I can tilt but I cannot get rotation
I can use the two finger gesture to tilt the map but no way to rotate it. Is there anyone can do it? how to do it?
Rotate with fingers is not Desire and Nexus One possible unfortunately. Our toys are not 100% multi-touch capable.

It works on Sense HD ROMs AFAIK, don't know how well though.
But it's clear: Desire doesn't really have multitouch capability. I'm really glad the 3D-Gesture works though!
The Desire's touchpanel gets confused when you cross an axis with two fingers at the same time.
Not that big of an issue, IMO. The biggest improvement in the new Google Maps are the vector graphics.

Google Maps 5.0

I just downloaded the new update for Google Maps. Currently I'm using the HDONE build. Anyways, I can't get the 3D buildings to show up...is there an option within the app to have them appear or what????
I'm just downloading it now, but from what I saw in a video you use 2 fingers to raise and lower the elevation. You can also rotate the screen with 2 fingers.
Yeah, I did that but still no go
Strange - it works for me. Admittedly, there's no buildings, but it's tilting the map.
Oh, yeah yeah, It's tilting the map but the same goes for me it doesn't show the buildings. I know it's small..but I want my 3D buildings gosh darnit! >_<

Google Navigation doesn't like corners!

I am very disappointed with google maps navigation. When I am taking corners it lags behind then suddenly jumps forward and misses the corner completely. On some corners it jumps to a different road completely.
Do I have a defective GPS? or does google maps not handle corners very well?
Have you turned on "sensors aiding" under Location and Security? It helps a lot because it tells your phone you are cornering.

I just used Google Navigation yesterday for the first time in a while and they changed the interface in one of the updates. It used to behave more like Garmin, Tom Tom, etc., but now it's really just Google maps with a line and arrow on it. The SGS2 seemed to perform OK but Google maps wasn't too good with providing advance visual or voice alerts for turns or changes of direction. I'm going to try TeleNav today. Someone's posted a link that allows us to use the "basic" version for free. i'll see if I can find it.

On the streets, SGSII can hold its own pretty good. In all of my cars, it hasn't even lost a signal, jumped to adjacent streets, missed a turn, overshot an intersection, spun circles at a stop light, etc... including in my GT-R.
On the track, yeah... probably like the Porsches... left in the dust.
