Calculator function - is this really it? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I don't buy a cell phone for the calculator function...but really, is this it for the built in calculator?
No memory, no reciprocal, no nothing really. I know I can download a million different ones, but I'm not missing anything am I? One of the most advanced phones in the world is beat by a 99cent calculator?

Only thing else I could tell you is that there's an advanced tab if you swipe from right to left with sine, cosine, natural log, etc. But yeah that's pretty much it for the stock calculator. I don't ever use it because I have a TI-89 on mine and that's what I use all the time. It's actually better than my actual TI-89 because I can over clock the emulator CPU so it'll run around 3 times faster than my actual 89.

I love my TI-89t. Had never looked for an emulator for android before, but that's awesome.
In response to the original question: I would say that the best value of Android is the fact that it was designed to be modular. Back before the G1 came out, I can remember watching a video by the engineers which touted the ability to replace any app on the system. This was imho the revolutionary idea that put Android on the map. I think this is a good example of this philosophy in action. If you don't like the default, you are free to, and they have made it easy to, change it.

Thanks, I just downloaded it. I like the layout of RealCalc better, but Mobicalc is nice because it shows you the history of your inputs.

I've been using calculator++ as well lately. Love the multiple swipe actions on the keys.

Since Multitasking is the thing android boasts, why does it suck so badly?

Why couldn't it be more like the Palm Pre? I mean even my jailbroken iphone could pull off some multitasking that looked damn close to the pre.
I think the biggest thing I hear about android is it's got real multitasking (which works and I love), but I don't see why they couldn't make it better, or at least better looking. It's based on linux and there are some pretty snazzy graphics out there for that.
Personally, having used the jailbroken multitasking solutions on previous iPhones I didn't find them that great or graceful. The Palm Pre is still the king of multitasking hands down.
Android is working on it. Gingerbread will bring an improved UI with more flashy animations/graphics. For now, holding down the Home button is an acceptable method.

I found one or two apps for my old iphone that looked damn close to the pre, and worked pretty damn good on my 3g.
I know 3.0 is going to be a UI revamp, but who knows if the evo will ever get it. ;(

neither do i. i would like a explanation what the evo is not doing.
you compare the pre to be the king of multitasking? windows mobile (touch pro2 which is with me daily in addition to my evo) multitasks beautifully and so does android in my experience with android (hero from launch day and win mo since 2002). just the other day i was on a call , was updating some apps and using tapatalk on a forum. i even had lookout scanning the apps as they were installing.... (4G area). phone did not hiccup... stock non rooted. thats multitasking to me...
I use MultiTask Manager, and it's totally configurable and display the following:
- Running Apps
- Recently closed apps
- Fav Apps
Also you can hide apps that you don't want to see, max number of apps, background and much more.
I have the icon on my main screen
Is free.

It sounds to me like the op is only concerned with how asthetically pleasing multitasking is. The fact that android doesn't have the pretty cards animation that the webos and jailbroken iPhones have means it sucks. That seams silly to me. Wanting nicer animations is fine, but saying that multitasking sucks because of the lack of these animations is silly.

If that is the case, then the OP doesn't understand the design philosophy behind Android multitasking.
1) All apps are loaded into memory from the get go.
2) Task managers are unnecessary, just pick whatever app you want to switch to, and start it to switch to it. Hence the last 6 used apps menu when holding down the home key.
In a sense, Android multitasking is intended to be superior to any other implementation - there's no need to be even thinking about it. It just does its thing.
I like multitasking on Android way better than the Pre. First off it works without me having to worry about what's open, second I never get an error telling me to close apps even though no cards are open. Third it just works on Android. palms system is nowhere near stable yet, and backgrounder on iPad has closed apps so often that multitasking was bad.

I as well fail to see a problem with Android's multitasking abilities.
same....OP please elaborate.
I understand what the OP means... I have BOTH and the Pre DOES BEAT Android in multitasking capabilities.... I'll give u an example
On my Evo, I use Tweetcaster a lot...let's say I need to open up ZumoDrive and share something... I hit home, then open programs then open up ZumoDrive... If I wanna go back to where I was prior (Tweetcaster, looking at a persons profile), I hold the home button...and select Tweetcaster from the recently used apps, and it reopens the app from scratch, forgetting about where I was previously. That's just 1 example (that I happened to think of right now, but there's others) Another would be, try downloading a mp3 from the web browser and playing it...then switch apps... The song stops (unless u play it from the music player)
And the problem with the jab at WebOS saying well, you don't get too many cards errors in Android; well wouldn't exist b/c well for 1, the Evo has a 1GHZ processor and 512MB Ram... Compared to my original Pre (non plus) with much slower CPU; that's a no brainer that the Evo would be able to handle the tasks more effectively, (yet the GPU performance on the Pre is better, go figure)
But, it does sound like the OP was referring more to the way it looks... while, I don't care what it looks like... I just want it to work better.

I agree with the mp3 thing. It's annoying. I think there must be better mp3 players out there.
Try Quickdesk. You won't be disappointed.
Yeah I've experienced that problem with the mp3 player. I've noticed it varies from App to app. The standard music app will stop sometimes, as does Xiialive - but Last.fm app seems to be extremely stable - never had it stop regardless of what I was doing. I don't think there's anything wrong with holding the home button - it works nicely but I am more concerned about how programs function while in the background. As I mentioned it seems to vary from program to program, and the are said to be revamping the standard music program, so I guess we can keep our fingers crossed.
I doubt it will be much work to fix but I agree, they need to step it up a notch in this respect.

But that isn't a good example because that isn't what should happen with the current paradigm. I've left countless programs and come back to exactly the same spot when I return. Something else is going on there. How many programs are you using in between these two? Are you waiting a bunch of time? Maybe Android closes out programs after a certain period of inactivity.

This one confuses me. I can play music with something other than the music player and switch apps without the music stopping no problem.
If I were to offer one easy change to the current UI, it would be to put a little circle or star on the icons next to the programs that are still processing in the recent apps list. That's the only issue I can see. I can't tell which ones on that list are closed and which ones are still open.

Googles new market is a FAYUL!!!!

Its so laggy and really irritating...it looks great but when updating apps it slows my phone up so bad! I look at google in disgust when they release crap like this...i know they are better than this, they need to show it.
If its just me that experiences these problems then don't flame me too bad...just stating an opinion. ;-)

i think it was definitely made with bigger screens in mind. theres no reason half my screen should be taken up by some green blob when i turn my phone sideways...very annoying.
also, why did people hate on the tabs?? it made it so much cleaner looking (the tabs when looking at the apps, the Top Paid/Top Free/Just in are still ok)

i think so too,
on my vibrant it looks alright, but that green format on top is just TOO DAMN BIG.
when on landscape it take more than half the screen.
I'd love to keep this, but the green thing is just too big, besides that nothing wrong, it was slow before, now its been way faster for me.

The market app is a huge improvement in aesthetics
What it does, however, is showcase Android failure IRT UI Accelleration.
It's laggy on a Galaxy S phone. I can only imagine what it would have been like on the Aria I had a while back, or on another low-spec phone.
It seriously runs like I'm trying to run Crysis on Max Settings with an Integrated Graphics card in a computer from 2006...
But the overall looks of the market, and the functionality are a huge improvement.
I do think they should have allowed us to choose out of like 3 or so color schemes, though. Green on white is not cute...

i kind of like it. it performs the same or maybe a little better than the previous market, but i mostly just like the new app description setup and stuff.
No. It doesn't even come close to the performance of the market before it. It performs marketly worse.
And it has like half the reliability (Force Close Happy).

I like the new look, but the performance has been significantly worse. I expect we'll see improvements/changes as they roll out their promised web accessible android market.
The market is the one area I'd bet significant money on google continuing to improve quickly.
UI is bad, half of the screen is for the advertisement (or recommendation?)
and all the comment and description is packing together in one screen...
and what I really hate is the permission pages,
at least bigger font or bold for those words!

Yes, it must be you. My downloads and installs are faster than ever with the new market. And so is my phone. I see no lag what so ever. In fact I see an increase in speed.
Had no issues, slow downs or force closes on Nero V1 so far.

This really looks good for me but it loads slower when i open it and the old market is much easier to use.
For me the search and downloads on the new market are just way faster. And I also just love the UI. MAYBE its because I'm on froyo but the old market just gave me hang downloads it was just stuck & would not install. Cancelling and redownloading about 2 or 3 times actually got the app installed. I say go with whatever works for your phone.

SPB UI Beta

Can you clarify? I have no clue what you are asking. What is spd beta?
Pardon me....that's supposed to be SPB. SPB Mobile Shell is sort of a home replacement. It's a really drastic difference though. It's been around for Windows Mobile for a while and now they have an open beta to test the Android version. Here's a link. They have a nice little video that gives a good idea of what it's like and also a direct link to where you can register to get into the beta testing group.

While the implementation looks cool, I think there's a reason why the "3D" concept never took off on the desktop, despite many tries - it's just not a useful or efficient analogy for interacting with a computer.
Does it really provide any meaningfully enhanced or fundamentally better/easier/faster interaction to see screens spin around on a 3D drum than simply sliding linearly from side to side? Not really. Cool, sure, but that's about it.
But I tend to be a minimalist with it comes to a lot of things - just because you can, doesn't necessarily mean you should.
I think I'd rather have the phone (HTC Thunderbolt) than the UI App... lol Looks pretty slick

Aside from being LTE it doesn't appear that there is anything new or special about the thunderbolt. Its just a 4g EVO or Desire HD.

For me its not so much the 3d aspect of it as it is the tools for managing Widgets, editing folders and apps and what might be done with it once it is released. It also looks incredibly smooth(better than mine now) as it renders at 60 fps.

i havent heard back please someone post this apk....i agree maybe we souldnt use it just cuz we can but it looks so dang cool. as a geek u need to play with it
i also wanted to add that i used to love this on wondows mobile. i have to running on the touch pro with less then 512...it was a very slow phone compared to times now and spb did justice with making everything not laggy. sure it ripped thru my batt but thats why i have extras layiong around with a full charge on them i really think this would be amazing on a device with 1ghz and the android os. i had more problems with touchflo 3d then i did on spb ms3. for those who think it will bog down the phone, well i cant say for sure but i dont think ull notice a difference except batt life
hey anyone get this apk yet? idk why but i wanna try it really bad
It's been a while since I've heard anything on this. Anybody have any news to share or new info?

Let's Rant!

Here we can rant about our beautiful new smartphones to hopefully relieve some stress. Sound good? I'll begin.
For starters, I hate the framrate issues that occur too often for a phone with 2GBs of RAM! Clearing a recent app, hitting the home button, or opening up messages always gives me an annoying st-stutt-ter that simply should'nt be ther. I also hate that it is impossible to access your internal storage from a Mac or Linux based computer? Really? I can plug a cheap $10 mp3 device from the 1930's, drag and drop some music and be good to go. Also, what is up with pop-up? pop-out? play?! Why can it only be used (for my knowledge) with videos that are saved onto the phone?! AND how can I put them on the phone with my Mac?! URGH, I can choose between 16, 32, or 64 GBs BUT I still need an SD card to put basic media on my phone? I also don't like how you can't change the shortcuts on the lockscreen, the phone has 8 different main colors between TouchWiz, ICS, and the Nature UX, I originally made this thread on my phone but got a text and tried to go back into Chrome and my text disappeared, AND how they took the AutoText? feature out of TouchWiz (when you can make your phone automatically substitute "sm" into a smiley face or whatever else you want to configure AKA the thing I liked most about TouchWiz). WOW, *takes a deep breath* I feel better. What would you like to rant about?!
P.S. I LOOOOVVVVEEEE my phone though, it just has some slightly annoying kinks (just like every other phone).

I know! This is such a huge letdown. I went into a T-Mobile store today to test it out and was disappointed because I wanted to watch youtube videos while I multitask. I have not ever been given the choice to what player I would like to use except for once on a facebook video someone uploaded and it DID work but other than that it does not allow me to use this on YouTube videos. :/ maybe someone could help? I can try to mess with YouTube real quick.
Update: nope, still couldn't get it to work and I tried both the mobile sight and the youtube app. Different settings, longclick on the video etc. Oh wells
I love the feel of the phone, the battery life, the WiFi speeds, the display, and the speed, but...
The noise on the headphone jack is distracting and awful. Like, making me wish I had bought the Galaxy Nexus bad.
The Bluetooth range for my headsets appears to be about half that of my Vibrant. I used to be able to leave my phone on the counter and wander from room to room, but now it needs to be in my pocket. (To be fair, I haven't tried it with Power Saving off yet.)
How do I.....
Remove labels under the icons on the home screens?
Remove the page indicator?
Reorder bookmarks and get the reorder to stick in the stock browser?
I want to stick with TouchWiz and stay close to stock for now. I understand other launchers can do what I want, but I don't want to change for now.

I'm not aware of any TouchWiz settings that are user-configurable. (I don't want to discount Samsung making configurable options that could be set with the installation of a configuration program.)
Out of curiosity, what do you like about the TouchWiz launcher that you don't want to give up?

I haven't tried dragging and dropping mp3 files directly onto the phone yet but I did try the Samsung Kies software and it worked fine.
Anyone notice the phone getting warmer than usual, not hot but just enough to become uncomfortable, i am coming from a skyrocket and did not have the same issue, i thought the s4 was supposed to run cooler however the lower half of the phone seems to get warm doing very light browsing and sometimes doing nothing at all.

Dragging and dropping works fine on a Windows machine. Android uses the long-standardized MTP protocol on USB but it seems little work went into support because only the Zune really used it. (Even on Windows, there are a few quirks.)
It's an awesome protocol for what it does and it fits nicely with Google's new unified partition model (you like getting upgrades for your phone and not managing storage space, right?), but this is the proverbial broken egg to make that nice Android omelet.

My phone gets warm in bright areas almost certainly as a result of the screen power usage. Is the phone plugged in? It gets warm on the lower half while charging, too.

It's kinda silly, but I like the stock clock and weather on the home screen. I also like some of the widgets, especially the calender. I have purchased several alternative in the past that I could use, but the calender is a biggie for me. I have tried many of them and none of them quite hit the mark, for me anyway.
I have tried many launchers. Go Launcher is the only one I have not played with in depth. I may give it a try tonight. I really like ADWex but the lack of a nice calender bothers me. I used smooth calender with it, but I really like the TouchWiz calender.
Always open to ideas. Thanks.
yea most phones get warm when plugged in but this one seems to be getting warm while not on the charger and also while not being strained too much at all. Maybe i got a lemon but id like to hear other owners experiences. I will be exchanging it regardless but when you pay this much stupid issues like that should be resolved before launch.

Oh come on now
He could have gotten it from work for all we know. The point is, there's an issue with the phone and mac compatibility that he pointed out. It's no help to lulz at him for using a nice computer.
I, for one, would be a bit concerned as well.
Your android and your mac dont like each other imagine that

I also hate that it is impossible to access your internal storage from a Mac or Linux based computer? Really? I can plug a cheap $10 mp3 device from the 1930's, drag and drop some music and be good to go. Also, what is up with pop-up? pop-out? play?! Why can it only be used (for my knowledge) with videos that are saved onto the phone?! AND how can I put them on the phone with my Mac?! URGH, I can choose between 16, 32, or 64 GBs BUT I still need an SD card to put basic media on my phone?
P.S. I LOOOOVVVVEEEE my phone though, it just has some slightly annoying kinks (just like every other phone).

Go to android.com/filetransfer/ and download the app. Open the app, then connect your phone to your mac. Bring down the notification bar and click on the USB connection. Change it to connect as camera and it will work. You'll then have access to the internal filesystem as well as the sd card.

Anyone notice the phone getting warmer than usual, not hot but just enough to become uncomfortable, i am coming from a skyrocket and did not have the same issue, i thought the s4 was supposed to run cooler however the lower half of the phone seems to get warm doing very light browsing and sometimes doing nothing at all.

this.
it does annoy me that this phone gets warm so easily.
the flip side to that, is it is very thin towards the bottom, the heat has to escape some type of way tho. It is a powerful core in a very thin body.

First impressions

Having flashed and played around with Ubuntu on my N4 I have found that it looks good but, as you would expect from the sort of build, that it is barely usable.
The browser app only produces a white screen and most things are generally broken, to be honest, I'm not in the least bit surprised seeing as it's a dev build but it would be nice if things worked a bit better.
I also noticed there was no way of accessing settings of any sort, aside from network settings. This may well be an oversight on my part but I did dig quite a bit.
I have not had a chance to play with the SDK as I'm on windows and can't find anyway to install/use it (and I really can't be bothered) so I have no comments on that.
From what I could tell, performance was pretty good, but that may just be the N4, and I noticed no huge drain in battery when I restored my CM10 backup, aside from what you'd expect from a backup, flash and restore.
I couldn't figure out how to use the docking mode (nor do I know if it's even in this version) so I also cannot comment on that.
However, I think I will be sticking to CM10 for now and I'll wait for a more usable version to come out before I begin to use Ubuntu more often.
How has everyone else found it?

Edited because people are too stupid and/or lazy to pay attention to when something is posted. Good job there.

Looks good
I installed Ubuntu on my galaxy nexus and while it does look good, it is very laggy and slow to respond to touch commands. Browser works fine but very slowly. I too did not find any "settings" menu or options. The camera works just fine and so does the gallery. Power button does the usual lock/unlock action, but the volume buttons seem to do nothing. Haven't heard any sounds on the device either. Will keep exploring the OS but so far, it really does feel like a preview, as Canonical has described.
Calls and sms work, and so does wifi. When i plugged in the headset during a call however, it did not work at all.
It is available for the Verizon s3 on RootzWiki just Google it.

One other thing I noticed when I was on my commute to school was that I couldn't turn off wifi, which did not help my battery, I do still really like the ui and I'm sure that it will be really good when it is finished

Tried it on my nexus 7, the device was lagging almost constantly. I do like the UI itself though, it looks quite refined and easy on the eyes, much like desktop Ubuntu.

The browser worked for me, and I'm on a galaxy nexus.
You can access volume controls and brightness controls the same way you can network (note brightness is under battery indicator). There is no way to set date and time except from command line via adb or ssh. Out of curiosity what other settings would others like to access?
For the SDK, although I can't use QtCreator I am able to edit and compile code from a Windows 7 computer on the phone itself, using ssh with vim qmake, and even run some GUI programs using an X server, like gedit and meld.
Docking mode is unavailable, as far as I can tell. It probably will not be available until Mir is released, since I think the rootless X is being worked on for Mir.
I think Ubuntu Touch has a lot of potential.
Is this supported by all phone?
