usb port went to S*** - XPERIA X10 General

I am super bummed! I have two x10's and BOTH of the micro usb ports on the phones finally crapped out today. I can't get my phone to charge/flash etc. I realize this is a defect of x10's but I have been able to use the micro usb semi damaged by just pushing it forward a bit and resting it against something. Now...nothing, nada. I guess I could buy a universal battery charger to charge the battery (if they even work???) and a microsd reader to put new zips on my phone but how am I supposed to flash kernals without a working micro usb? Is it possible to even do so? I hope that I can talk my phone company into giving me an early phone upgrade since mine isn't due until the end of August! Otherwise I think I may be up a creek without a cell phone...
Edit: I just needed a new cord.:rolleyes
Remove please mods

Yes it is worth mentioning that a new Sony branded USB lead can most of the time fix port connection issues so do not always think the worst.
My X10 had issues for nearly a year but when i got a Arc s and tried that USB cable it worked perfect so now flashing roms is easy again and 2 years on the X10 is going strong.

Video out 4 TV? for HTC HD2 is it possible?

Is their support for this? will a special cable be needed? or will we have this option not available?
Thanks for any info on this
No, not possible.
Have a search of this forum, there has been a few threads about it, and all of them have concluded that you can't.
The HTC Touch Pro had TV-out functionality? Why not the HD2?

No, you can't.
I know this post is old, but I have a nexus one and considered going back to WM for the HD2 bc like the OP, i missed the video out. I used it on my tp2 on my car.
I will assume your forum is correct, and for the next guy who googles this, I will explain why, and probably why they don't have it anymore.
HTC used to use a proprietary USB jack on their phones, like the TP TP2 Diamond, etc, that had 5 extra pins on the back side of the USB. This allowed you to use an htc video out cable, or audio cable, to transmit av over the usb cord. this is why you can use any micro USB car charger from a gas station, as I did more often than not, to charge your phone. But you cannot use your HTC charger on a regular micro USB phone. It won't fit other electronics.
Now my guess as to why they cut that option out:
Everyone complained about that proprietary jack. Moving GSM phones to a global charger standard is a hot topic the past year or two. Everyone complains about all the special cords that do the same thing, and I saw it in reviews of all htc phones. Few people understood the reasoning, bc HTC made you buy that cable seperately as I did so most people, especially those new to windows mobile, didn't even think to use their phones for TV out. Those who did know probably didn't buy enough of those cables.
And so HTC changes to micro and mini USB, as all new android and wm htc phones have, 15 people on XDA [including me] complain of losing video out, they lose like 50 dollars in cord sales, and 100,000 bloggers praise them for moving to a standard USB configuration. PR is a win, lol.
IMHO that really sucks. I install car electronics, and I'ld be willing to bet half the people I know who tried out an htc phone did it because they thought it was cool I could watch movies, browse the net, and play games on the screen in my car. I honestly didn't find many practical uses for it but I loved it anyways. Imagine a ps2 emulator playing a racing game with me using my phone as a controller and you'll get the idea. HTC is trying hard to make it to the big leagues, and like Microsoft with WP7, adopting to lower end consumers loses alot of favor with power users like us.
Not to start an argument... but thats why I moved to Android, and thats why my next phone will be the Incredible, video out or EVO 4g which has HDMI out, or samsung galaxy S, which has HDMI out... you get the picture.

The Touch Pro series had video out built in to the hardware on purpose and was advertised as having it. Not all HTC phones with mini-usb had video-out. And I'm pretty sure I was able to use my mini-usb charger from my touch-pro on any mini-usb phone or device.

[ULTIMATE SOLUTION]to 'unknown' USB device error

Yupp...
Picked up this from a cheapy universal USB set from Walmart
for 15.00$ after spending 3hrs trying to get my buddies Epic flashed.
Hooking the phone directly to the micro end, and the standard USB to
the front port of my desktop, I have successfully had the drivers automatically install, and flashed all in the first try.
This method is the most amount of current, least amount resistance from computer
to the device.
Also USB mounting works again, since it stopped this function with the dreaded
'unknown' device error <-now defeated =]
Dude, are you using the stock cable? It's probably just that cable...you could have purchased another MicroUSB cable for much less than $15 and accomplished the same thing...while having extra cables handy.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002YGRAS8/ref=oss_product
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001UC9NOQ/ref=oss_product
I have those and they both work great with my Epic.
Generally the reason why this issue comes up from my experience is because of the ****ty cables that people (including me at one point) use.
You'd think that the stock cable included would be one of decent quality.

[Q] touchwiz/general query

morning all,
Ive just got a s4 after 2 years with an lg optimus 3d (a phone which im very happy with). Now for some queries:
info: its a 9505
Touchwiz: if i use another launcher like Nova or Apex do i lose all of the goodies like the smart eye tracking stuff?
Rooting: i see a lot of topics on this but none have specifically addressed this simple core question, is it safe? can i brick my device i managed to softbrick my optimus 3 times during its life and i didn't feel good about any one of them (and had massive relief when i fixed it) what i'm looking for is a one click solution that gives me the access without all of the recovery ****ery
durability: after taking it out of the box i was instantly struck by how brittle it feels and a web search on said topic didn't fill me with confidence either, can anyone recommend the most effective case for a clumsy individual (i've never dropped my phone but with what feels like a phone mate of chalk i guarantee it'll happen)
HDMI & USB on the go: are the two mutually exclusive? ive seen hdmi connector cables with micro usb slots but all of the example pics suggest the micro usb is for charging only.

Dell Venue 8 Pro - links on USB & Power

I stumbled across these forum posts looking into how to get power and data at the same time on the Dell Venue 8 Pro.
Many good ideas on cable combos and hacking USB hubs to get the power and data working:
http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/dell/59328-venue-8-usb-power-same-time.html
For the more adventurous, someone cracked theirs open and added a 64GB USB key:
http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/dell/60553-adding-128gb-flash-venue-8-pro.html
The USB hub mod looks very doable, petergunn posted some videos in that thread which show it step by step and you can pick up the hub (or one very like it) on eBay for less than £2. I ordered one a few days ago to try it myself.
The internal USB mod is a different matter, the soldering points involved look very small. I bought the 64GB model, so coupled with a 64GB SDXC I'm not going to be running low on space any time soon unless I really load the thing up with movies or games.
I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the device though. Bay trails are the first Atom chips Intel will be using the Pentium brand for (for laptop/desktop models) and you can see why. Performance-wise it feels like a huge jump from cedar/clover trail. I've installed a bunch of games on it (inc. Blood Bowl and SC2:Heart of the Swarm) and it plays them well, even on around medium settings. Windows 8.1 is a different matter though, I've already hit several annoyances.
I ended up getting a more expensive but similar hub. The cheap ones seem to be sold out everywhere unless they are shipping from China and I didn't feel like waiting for weeks.
I picked my Dell up as an open box at Micro Center for $139. I don't even know why it was so cheap. It looked like it was never out of the box. I couldn't be happier with the tablet especially for the price. Not as elegant a device as my RT but so much more useful.

If your soldering skills are as bad as mine, that was probably a good idea. Mine arrived today, and the 'mini' ones on eBay from Hong Kong are very small inside, with much smaller pads than the ones successfully modified by the guys over on tablet PC review. I attempted the mod today but something must have gone wrong as all I got was "unrecognised device" when plugging it in. In the end I gave up on that and just went for the simpler option (see attachment) and made an adapter from some spare bits and pieces.
It's worth noting that there are a few caveats though, these are mentioned on the thread but quite a few pages in. Firstly, it will only trickle charge while connected to another device, not fast charge (you can verify this by checking in the Dell diagnostics, accessible by holding volume up and the power button when switching on). In practice, this means the battery level should remain around the same if the tablet is on. I think this explains why there is no official docking station for the 8 Pro from Dell as it wouldn't be practical to charge it like this for everyday use. Secondly, you're going to need more power than the Dell 10 watt charger can provide if you want to charge the tablet and run power hungry devices like external hard drives - if I connect my external Western Digital drive to my adapter, it works but the tablet stops charging entirely. A solution is to use a powered hub (or if you're doing the hub mod, attach a second charger to the hub's power connector).
I'm really jealous of the prices the 8 Pro seems to be going for in the US, it's a steal as those. In the UK, I got my 64GB model for £279 which is around $458 USD. That's still cheaper than the official Dell UK price, believe it or not!
-edit-
Forget what I wrote about trickle charging, it turns out this was due to insufficient wire thickness. Something to watch out for when modifying your hub though. My tablet is now properly charging when connected to my external hard drive, no powered hub needed
Well, we could actually make a usb 3.0 hub out of the LTE socket.... Took pics of the shields off, I was thinking the notched corner was an sdcard slot. NOPE!
Not USB related, but another mod of sorts (firmware) has been mentioned over on tablet PC review. V3D says it's possible to downgrade to BIOS A03 (with the advanced eMMC/SD speed settings) but keep A04's embedded controller update that fixed the low charge problem:
I just downloaded [A03] right from Dell & used the command /writeromfile to extract the BIOS rom then used AFUWIN from AMI's site to flash the Main bios image & NVRAM. [...]
I don't recommend using DDR50 on the MicroSD card slot, From my benchmark testing I found it had no effect on the speed & others have reported the MicroSD card to becomes unstable, randomly dismounting at times.

[Need spec explanation] Plan to buy Xiaomi Mi A1 but... USB type C

Hello everybody,
I plan to buy a Xiaomi Mi A1 but there's an hardware related issue that set me up.
This issue is called micro USB type C.
Since almost nobody got it, I know having this kind of stuff will be hard but I'm ready to be a charging-loner. I won't compromise my buy just for a detail (between the facts that there's no FM radio and NFC also)
However! I am new to these technical questions and I'm not really at my ease. So I'd like to know some specs about this technology.
I DO NOT expect to have better charge/data transfer performances with it, because I got old stuff I won't change for the phone, on my PC for exemple (no way to pay for replacing my USB type B 2.0).
So do the cable the seller provide (if provided) is good for my everyday use? Let's say I want to plug my phone to my PC to drop some pictures. Will it work without harming anything or I'll have to buy more cables or adapter? Also can I wire a single charging block with a micro USB type C - USB type A/B ?
You can just get micro USB to USB C adapter plug things, it will work fine. USB Cable is fully backwards compatible. The adapters are like a dollar or more/less and you can find them on any decent gadget site or eBay. Get a couple and keep one in your wallet even.
Phone comes with a USB C cable with regular USB on the other end, it's nothing special. You don't need a USB C port on a computer.
Start with hardware I'm satisfied with my mi a1 I can use it with anything and anywhere sync with pc my console tv no problem I'm using it just like before I used my galaxy s2 (5 year older device) I didn't purchased anything separately mi a1 come with one adaptor charger and a one meter USB type c cable and my pc more older then my galaxy s2
Talking about FM you can run any fm app. it have fm hardware I'm on custom rom and nowdays developer provide fm in there custom rom on stock you can get it via root access and installing spirit fm. You said you're not aspecting better data transfer or charging so it's pathetic. (no offense sorry but you are living in 80)
In this era company's trying to provide there customer better hardware in cheaper cost and that's a future!
Xiaomi didn't provide fast charge for our device but it capable for it why!? because if they purchase license for quick charge from qualcomm so they must pay for it or this purchase will definitely become heavy on customers whereas without quick charge my device charge full in one and half hour (if I'm on stock rom maybe one hour and 45 minutes exactly) but it more faster then my old galaxy s2 it's tack up to three hours for full charge replaced battery 1650 mah. file transfer rate is satisfying I mention that I'm using older pc.
On hardware level that device have Samsung EMMC, DDR, front camera LCD is more bright then Moto g5s plus my friend have that device (g5s+).
Talking about warranty I've read about that on XDA and YouTube you can claim your warranty whereas you flashed custom rom on it (just flash stock rom and lock boot loader your warranty is back).
Thank you for you answers!
Actually I can explain why I seem to "hate" this new kind of USB. Although it's really practical, I was just affraid to pay lot and having to think too much just for a cable.
Before I create this thread I read articles about this in my native language, and the comment were full of oldies complaining that "well another stuff our USB are already dead they're annoying it will always go faster we'll have to pay always more" blah blah blah.
I didn't really care of these messages, but articles (well written and purely objective) talked about harm in a specifical case due to incompatibility so I was affraid. This is also the reason why I didn't specially expect better performance, for exemple in charging, in the case I charge my phone on my PC. But maybe with a dedicated block charge is faster, I believe that but if it's not the case for some reason (I'm really lost...) I won't be deceived.
You managed to reassure me so it's fine. I just got one last question I'd like you to answer if you know.
I know basically it's a hardware related thread, but to avoid thread pollution if I could avoid creating another...
It's about root, especially under Oreo, with a process that seems really... Hard. Never heard about a device you have to flash a modified kernel to work before, and as a camera problem troubleshooting the fact to set your SELinux environment to permissive... Just crazy for me. What do you think?

To root the phone you can simply flash Magisk zip after booting temporary TWRP. To fix camera lags there is a specific module that allow necessary permissions while mantaining selinux enforcing.

I'm OK with that, but it's only valid with Nougat, not Oreo?
I didn't hear that much about camera lags but worse, camera not working at all.
It was on Oreo, but I could try to root before getting the Oreo update after all.

To many defects and problems with this smartphone... like proximity sensor, sd card, headphones sounds and other...
Type C is almost the same MicroUSB with diferent shape... compatible with any charger/pc/any normal USB plug. and since its is the newest tech, most high-end and mid-high devices use type C (every samsung A and S series since 2017, huawei new phones, to mention the 2 first at market share), so its actually a positive thing if you plan to keep this phone a couple years. It will become more popular soon.
About the root/Gcam thing: I did the whole process in like 20 mins (reading carefully every post in the forums) and its working like a charm. It was easier to root than my last samsung. Everything working fine, even OTAs with magisk update trick. Dont be afraid and try the available guides!
Its a great phone for its price
USB-C was new for me, but I got used to it. I cant see any diference between normal micro-usb and this one, if we dont count the shape.
Ι think USB type c cables are sturdier than micro SD ones. I mean the connector not the actual cable. For my Samsung S7 I need every 2-3 months new cable(connector looses or cannot charge-fastcharge). The type c cables that I use in my LG HiFi plus dac,Kodak ektra and mia1 are still like new and show no defect yet.
