Hey all,
I currently use TWRP 2.0 and I was wondering what are the pros and cons of each? I've heard that CWM is less buggy... anyway, is it much different than twrp in terms of interface? I'm used to using twrp and dont really want to switch unless there are distinct benefits.
Thanks

One man's opinions on the pros/cons of each...
TWRP
- A more friendly user interface... big buttons and swipe enabled
- Option to compress backups can save space
- Reboot options are broken as it does not set the bootmodes properly before restarting the device
CWMR
- Interface is less developed and the menu options are not so well organized
- Additional formatting options for some partitions
- Reboot options work as expected
- Backs up to .img files, which can be useful if you want to fastboot flash some of them without using recovery
As a side note, installations of some zips are problematic in the new version of TWRP 2.1.0 and I was not able to flash a handful of ROMs I tested.
Overall, I think the two are pretty much are on par with each other in terms of features and work well. You should settle on one or the other though... back ups on one won't restore on the other.
Thanks for the replies, i think i'll stick with TWRP for now

You were a member since 2010.. Please read the FAQs and rules. Her battery might be old, consider buying a new HTC battery for her.
Try rerooting and installing a different, stable ROM. Currently, I'm using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1629962 as a daily driver with the frosted cherry kernel. Again, please post this in Q&A, not in development. Hope everything goes well.

I would also install the 4ext recovery found here:

Both are touch screen, I just prefer the added options in 4EXT. But clockwork mod is good also. Idk if 4EXT is available for your vibrant though.

Is the free version better than cwm? (For those who thinks 4ext better than cwm)
I want to give it a try, but I don't want to buy it once it's compatible only to a few numbers of devices.

The free version is only the installer. The paid version of 4EXT installer has a few more features in the app, but let's you choose from the same recoveries.
1. Get one of the apps.
2. Install the latest 4EXT Recovery Touch.
3. Profit
I have a feeling after you use the recovery you won't mind buying the paid app. I didn't. It's worth it to donate for something as fantastic as 4EXT.
Thanks again, estallings15! You're always very helpful to glacier community
I installed it and thought it really nice. I think I won't use app features, but I'll buy it to contribute to the future of 4ext indeed
Another question, Is there any known incompatibility with any glacier rom?

Not in my experience. It fact, quite the contrary. Many have reported problems with ROMs flashed through CWM Recovery. Upon switching to 4EXT and flashing the same ROMs the problems cease. Seems like a pretty good deal to me.
Also, you're quite welcome.
So I took a big leap and rooted my tablet this morning. I've installed Titanium Backup and GMD Gesture, and also AdAway and AppQuarantine. What other great things can I do? I love trying new things. Any suggestions from you experts? I would be very grateful!

Download and do either of the following for a full backup...
the best way to do a complete and full backup of your device.. There are two methods
1 most common
download ROM MANAGER
you can from in this app install a custom recovery on your device..
Boot into the custom recovery and do a full anand backup. you can also flash other custom roms (custom android os)
2 what i use..
download goo manager beta from play store
in go manager click menu at top choose install open source recovery . follow prompts . It will download and install
same as step one you can boot into recovery from goo manager Its big botton fully touch base . And you can backup and restore as well as flash custom roms...
NOW WITH THE ABOVE SAID PLEASE READ thru the forums related to roms rom manager Custom recoveries .. and so on .. this will save you some troubles later .. anything you need to know or not understand Just ask We are here to help.
Cool, thanks! Could you point me to the best place for explanations about roms? XDA is huge and I am not sure where to look... Cheers!

To find roms on xda
Xda is a very organized web site for the most part finding them is easy. deciding which one is not so much
rom actually means read only memory.. But we will skip the tech stuff for now..
Here on the device development forums Rom is referred to mostly as a custom built Operating system for your device .
these can be built by one person or a team of developers . Most have tweaks and customization's a bit above and beyond the stock experience. ITS BEST before flashing any new rom is to into the forum thread of the rom read developer info and the comments made on the thread. Many roms have experimental software apps and tweaks.. Not all roms are perfectly stable..SO FINDING one that has what you are looking for is just a matter of reading and trial and error.
Most roms. well all you see anymore Come with a kernel. (The linux part of android .. Kinda whats under the hood) . Be sure to pay attention to this and the information. Some add features some over clock .
we have here for the n7 several types of roms .
original development .. these are based on the custom operating system pushed by google
custom based on the above but often has alot more customization's and kernel tweaks More likely to have buggs . but often faster and take up less storage space on device.. as well as having a personal twist for the developer on apps installed customization's and themes
I never give advice on what to use just go in the development section and start reading .
Be sure before you flash anything on your tablet know what it is and how to get out of it Back to stock and Have your backups backed up...
ALWAYS HAVE A WAY OUT FIRST..
Good Luck
So I am now on Paranoid Android, trying out the different Workspaces. Thanks for the help!
But I don't understand what Paranoid Android does. What does "This rom lets you scale and project every app, every widget, even systemcomponents individually" mean in every day language?
Also, could someone explain where, in tablet mode, the three dots are for the settings of many apps. They seem to be covered by the status bar. How does one access them? Would be grateful for help as I really like the small tablet mode.

Does not work - won't boot.
it does work.. just takes a round about way to install
the flash.img is a newer build but wont boot.. black screen
the CWM zip is older and will boot but stuck at boot logo
so to install start with a functional ROM
download and flash CWM Recovery from here http://blog.geekbuying.com/index.ph...all-cwm-recovery-on-mk808mk808b/#.UijpSTY3s4c
take the CWM ota zip from the OP, find the install script, and delete the first line with the asserts
copy your modified CWM zip to the internal sdcard on your MK808
use the reboot app to restart to recovery, flash the CWM zip.
restart the device afterwards, and make sure you get the boot logo
take your MK808 and with the batchtool flash the newer flash.img from the OP
after this reconnect to your TV.. on first start it will most likely start in recovery, go ahead and factory reset
reboot and enjoy!
CM10.1 for RK3066 devices
Hi
I just installed CM10.1 Android 4.2.2 on my MK808B and it runs great.
It can work on any Rockchip TV Stick, you just have to install the right kernel for your device then wifi is working. There are also versions for RK3188.
Download link: 'h**p://crewrktablets.arctablet.com/?p=1913'
Some improvements that would be great Maybe a rom developer can do it
1. Bluetooth support - I rekon it doesn't have all the bluetooth folders/files from system from the Rockchip stock roms, maybe this can be included.
2. Resolution - At the moment I can't find a setting to change the resolution eg. 720,1080p, can this be included.
3. The back button on the Mele Flymouse F10 doesn't work, you have to click back on the status bar. Maybe a keyboard layout file is missing.
4. Android keyboard - An Android keyboard doesn't popup, I only managed to use my hardware Mele keyboard for input.
5. Libstagefright Support - The libstagefright.so file from Rockchip. it looks like it's included but H/W+ in Mxplayer is scrambled.
6. Hardware Acceleration - I found one of the tweak apps included can enable it.
7. Developer settings in Settings Menu - This is not enabled at the moment.
8. Language - Change the default language to English instead of German. Can be done through build.prop file.
9. Build prop - Tweak it to improve performance of device.
If a rom developer can improve this rom it will be great, as it's so much better than the stock Rockchip roms.
Feature already included
CWM 6.0.1.5 recovery
- System ext4
- Internal Storage 2,5 GB
- PhabletUI & Multiuser
- Device spoofed as Nexus 7 [v1.2.3]
- Ethernet Support
- Init.d support
- USB-Hub enabled
- Gamepad (PS2, XBox, ...)
- Kernel modules (cifs, tun, lan, serial)
- latest hosts, su, su-binary, busybox
- MX Video-Player, Apollo & FX Sound
- Reboot Menu, CPU Tweaker, Pimp my Rom
- Dateimanager HD (Root)
- Trebuchet & Nova Launcher
Looks nice!
Does it work fine with Netflix? No scrambled videos?
Thanks!
Apparently Netflix Will not work out of the box. I wish someone would contradict me. Seems possible if you take up modding. It is a big drawback that someone in the business could overcome.

Hello. I have searched the threads for this. All I found out is that 4EXT is made from CWM source. But which one is better in your opinion. I want to flash this mod
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975379&nocache=1&z=2611511510331183
But they said we need CWM 6.0+ , so what recovery should I chose? I don't mind buying 4EXT, but only if its some use to me
If theres a very obvious answer, I'm sorry because I'm pretty new lol
It's all down to preference.
CWM is very simple and straight forward.
TWRP is prettier, has theming capability and extra features and uses it's own format and folders.
4EXT uses the same format and folders as CWM, but has a lot more features, theming, a "wipe all" feature and is much more pleasing to the eyes. I bought it. Never looked back.
Thanks I'm using the free version right now, so what time about entropy mod? Will it work?

Is that even if your backups are for ROMs both on different versions of Android?
Make sure you back up the boot partition also since different versions of Android use different kernels. It would be wise to keep a zip file of the kernels on you sdcard so you can flash them easily if the phone doesn't boot up after a backup.
Search for "noobdev dual boot" on this forum. I believe it is a much more convenient solution than using backups and a lot of roms are supported

The great thing about the dual boot is that you can switch between roms in a matter of 2 minutes (install excluded)
Typically I use it so I have my daily driver and one or two roms I want to give a try. Once I am happy with one of the try-outs I upgrade the primary.
Bottom line is the dual boot is very easy to work with, doesn't require (although it can be preferable to have one once every now and then) backups and allow for easy flashing of new roms without affecting your daily driver.
It damn well looks like you could use such convenience because if your ready to do what you listed above then I'd say you're likely to want to try new roms fairly often
