It's the only thing to flash roms. You can do what most do and flash manually through recovery.

I can second that. Its always better and safer to flash through recovery. Not to take anything away from rom manager, it's reliable also.

***Correction*** I think you mean "crotchless panties" and mini skirts.
To be serious though, it depends on what you mean by "better". ROM Manager seems to be popular because it's easy and doesn't require you to flash a zip from recovery mode. I personally like to just boot into recovery and flash because it's simple and flexible. A lot of ROMs I use come with ROM manager but it always says it will not work until I install Clockwork Recovery. Since I prefer to keep Amon Ra I just don't use ROM Manager anymore. Those are the only two ways I've personally done it but there are variations.
If you need ROM Manager to flash your ROMs, you should not have rooted your phone in the first place. End of story.

I can also build my own house from foundation to shingles ... doesn't mean I want to.
There seems to be an obsession at times that automation is somehow bad. Yeah I know how to reboot into recovery and flash. It's not that hard at all. But really unless you also wrote and compiled that ZIP yourself are you really doing much more worth making some silly elite notoriety out of?
Just saying after awhile it's really nice to simply select "download ROM", pick a flavor, check the boxes of bundled options and let it do the rest. Sure I didn't manually find them in a browser, download them, reboot into recovery, wipe, and flash individually while renaming each file (wouldn't want to cheat and use CWM or RA)... but so what?
Anyway, I know you bolded "need" ... so I may have picked out the wrong post, but sometimes i think a lot of the RA Recovery fans are needlessly proud and critical of other methods to a silly extent.

Amon Ra fans?? There is also Clockwork Mod recovery fans too. And I agree, if you only thought that you could flash your phone through Rom Manager, then someone needs to do some more reading before they just post a thread in the wrong section and didnt even search. Then again, I wish I was the fly on the wall when they really do something they arent supposed to without reading.

I actually started out with Rom Manager, but then I became weary if it actually wipes the device properly. I flashed to Amon and now I feel secure to be able to control what I'm wiping.

I like CWM because I'm just more used to it and by nature I'm a bit skeptical of new things lol because for no apparent reason I think it might die on me at any time! So I switched back to CWM.

Also, I don't understand why it is customizable (background images, and what not) because it is only used for a short while now and again, so it doesn't really need to be themed imo
Off-topic: You're in Bolton? I live like 2-4 miles away from you lol small world eh
4ext recovery is better than cwm imo because:
md5 check, possibility to format the partitions as ext3/4, rom name in the nandroid backup name, change backups from ext3 to 4 and so on.

I personally feel that 4ext is an excellent recovery, especially with the addition of ext3 and ext4 format/backup convert etc and the new layout which is great, very easy to use imho
.... but cm recovery is the basis of 4ext (with some hard work done by madmaxx82 obviously ) so for me the props go to both Koush and madmaxx82 for getting such a fantastic and productive recovery out to the masses

You're right, I absent-mindedly misworded my post. However the point about posts that aren't development to be posted on other subforums still stands.
Since you seem to be getting technical on my post, I will point out that the OP didn't have any form of punctuation in the post
Anyway, here is the official changelog from Koush's Google+ page:
Major changes:
Backups now use tar over yaffs for everything except mtd partitions. Backups got way faster.
Backups now preserve the filesystem type at time of backup. Restores will restore the appropriate filesystem type at restore.

Flashed this on wifey's shift last night, tried to run a backup from recovery. Was going good, then failed on /system. Tried running it again and it failed on /boot. Rebooted and phone is fine, however, I didn't have time to try anything else.
Has anyone else experienced back up issues with the new recovery?

Correct so skip all the app non-sense and just boot into recovery and do your nandroid... One sure fire way to have **** go bad is taking too many unnecessary steps, i.e. using an app to start a nandroid... I have had so many issues with cwm borking nandroids that I barely trust it, if at all... and adding an app to that equation, you are setting yourself up for an epic fail... I trust my fingers and brain to hit the right buttons... Not an app...

I use Rom Manager to do backups only when I need to name them. I've had good luck with it on my phone. But that being said. I've also had real bad experiences on other devices, really bad . Like every backup made thru RM being bad, and failing. But if I went thru recovery all was good. So it's not a failsafe method IMO.

Every recovery has a kernel in it. It needs that to work properly. The kernel inside of it though can be different then the one you use with Android.

I'm with this guy, though I must say that I appreciate the effort from randomblame. Following the rules and doing things properly leads to things that WORK properly. Thor's roms and recovery have issues, however useful they may be.
Great!
I have other android devices and was turned off by some people in the a500 community not following the law (by not complying with software licenses). I thought XDA had a policy about that, but maybe it is not applied to everyone.
As a software developer my self (mainly non-android) I was shocked by the actions of those parties breaking the law.
It is great to see people stepping up to fix the problem. Thanks for your work.
EDIT: I see people are removing thor's links from forum posts. Thats good. I remember seeing several over the past 6 months, maybe I saw them before they were removed. It is good to see people taking piracy seriously.

Try rerooting and installing a different, stable ROM. Currently, I'm using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1629962 as a daily driver with the frosted cherry kernel. Again, please post this in Q&A, not in development. Hope everything goes well.

The free version is only the installer. The paid version of 4EXT installer has a few more features in the app, but let's you choose from the same recoveries.
1. Get one of the apps.
2. Install the latest 4EXT Recovery Touch.
3. Profit
I have a feeling after you use the recovery you won't mind buying the paid app. I didn't. It's worth it to donate for something as fantastic as 4EXT.
Thanks again, estallings15! You're always very helpful to glacier community
I installed it and thought it really nice. I think I won't use app features, but I'll buy it to contribute to the future of 4ext indeed
Another question, Is there any known incompatibility with any glacier rom?

Not in my experience. It fact, quite the contrary. Many have reported problems with ROMs flashed through CWM Recovery. Upon switching to 4EXT and flashing the same ROMs the problems cease. Seems like a pretty good deal to me.
