Feedback on your note - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Hi,
I have been using an HTC Desire Z and figured to post here. I would like a new phone but can't really decide between the Galaxy note or the Galaxy S II. What is your opinion? My concern is the note maybe too big for me to use and fit in my pockets.
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium

Easiest answer is to go to a shop and get hold of a Note to see if you find it too big and if it fits your pockets. Opinions can be useful sometimes but at the end, the choice is yours and there is no better way than to see the device in real to get a better idea.

What do you expect to hear from a Note owners forum?

lol...exactly what I thought.....everyone here owns a Note = we love the big screen and I doubt anyone will say the contrary! Big screen is our cup of tea! hehe.

Note doesn't have a big screen. All other phones have a too little screen.

I've seen a good migration of desire Z owners moving to the note, I can only presume partly because of the typing experience on the large screen (dz being the best keyboard phone out atm?).
I myself don't use the keyboard but am hoping to migrate across
Sent from my HTC Desire Z using xda premium

Copied and pasted:
I can absolutely tell that this is a Pentile screen.
I do not have super vision. I wear contacts and my eyesight is no better than 20/20 but it is very obvious to me that this is a Pentile screen.
Even from about a foot away, the telltale sense of something being "off" is noticeable. Most obvious when looking at app icons and text. Text is not nearly as crisp as I am used to. It is possible to see the individual "grains" that images consist of starting from about 12" onwards.
At lower brightness settings, whites are rather washed out. Not very vibrant, even when compared to the low brightness settings on an IPS LCD screen.
The phone is deceptively heavy, and I don't mean that in a bad way. I was positively certain that my EVO 3D was at least 60 grams heavier than this device.. Until I looked up the official specs and saw that the N7000 is actually 8 grams heavier than the E3D.
Even with the case on, this phone feels super lightweight. Mass is distributed very, very evenly throughout the device. It's really neat, actually. At first, the lack of heft did give me the impression that this is a bit of a fragile device but I do find myself liking the fact that it's very evenly distributed. E3D weight was unevenly distributed towards the camera casing. I like that the casing in the Note is flush.
This next bit may be because I have a screen protector overlaid the display, but I do feel like the digitizer is more.. discerning. Not sure if that's the right word. But what I mean is that whereas I'm used to being able to give a screen the slightest bit of touch using the angled bit of skin that's just slightly more than flush with my fingernail, I find I have to make sure I present a good bit of skin to register a touch.
I do miss having a dedicated camera button.
I'm also not a fan of having the lock button on the side.
I'm actually not a fan of hard button placement, period. Due to the way I hold the phone, I find myself accidentally hitting the volume slider when unlocking my phone one-handedly.
It's a slick device and very beautiful. I'm not a fan of TouchWiz, less intrusive than Sense but also marginally less useful and coherent in design language. I find the aesthetic very kitschy and gaudy as well.
The TouchWiz lockscreen is beautiful but offers little in the way of utility. I immediately installed ADW Ex and WidgetLocker.
Performance is very good. Very smooth. Although I did also immediately decide to root and flash some stuff. My ROM is based on stock though, just adds some tweaks and doodads.
The 1.4Ghz Exynos/Mali combo offers good performance. I don't feel that it is particularly too much faster, more powerful than the 1.5Ghz Scorpion/Adreno 220 combo in my E3D but it is a helluva lot smoother, even considering it's powering something like twice as many pixels.
Battery life is very good, battery drain seems very balanced. Nice.
I love the size, my E3D seems like a plaything in comparison. But here's the thing, I have MAN HANDS. I'm far from what anyone would call a big guy, but I have big, clumsy and awkward fingers and thumbs. I can operate the Note one handed and can type one handed. The size is, for me, a big plus. I can't type with one hand as I could on my E3D due to the further travel but I still gots it baby.
Is this phone for everyone? No.
Even if one ignores the size issue, the Pentile display may be a BIG turn-off. I myself would prefer an IPS LCD of this size but I understand the concerns of battery efficiency and the simple constraints of technology at this time.
That is honestly, in my opinion, the more important question surrounding your decision to get this device or not. If you're ok with both the size and the display, have at 'em!

Well as an owner of the Desire Z I honestly think the physical keyboard isn't great for my use. I pretty the on-screen keyboard more. May I ask what is a pentile display?
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium

Pentile display means five sub pixels arranged together to form a pixel. A pixel is a combination of red green and blue sub pixels. Galaxy Note uses RGBG Pentile display (only four) . That means green pixel is placed in between each red and blue sub pixel. The human eye is most sensitive to green, especially for high resolution luminance information. This makes clear picture visible to us.

I wasn't sure about the size of the gnote but I went ahead with buying one before I actually used a test model. I went out a day or two after to test one after I had ordered mine and immediately started to have concerns because it just didn't feel right in my hands. As soon as I got it though I was blown away. The weight is absolutely perfect for holding and the screen size is just right. I have slightly larger hands than most guys but the people I've let use phone have thought it was awesome too despite its sheer size.
I think its best to just buy one and if you don't like it trade it in or something.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA

Frankly, I wish it were bigger. It could easily be another few centimetres wider (from a portrait perspective). I want it to not waste any space in my pocket! It would make tablet mode even better, browsing would be even more awesome, etc. Maybe even fit in a bigger battery, although it's certainly no slouch in that department.
The colour/gradient rendering might be an issue for you. It hasn't been for me ever since I switched to ICS, but it's something that never should've existed in an expensive phone like this.
The display is stunning, there's no other word for it IMO. Especially on full brightness and with colourful apps (Minecraft is a great demo for this!). Careful using full brightness when it's dark though, you will burn your eyes to a crisp!

Honestly, I think many of the people are right. 3.5 to 3.7 inch screen phones are really small. I'm starting to get sore eyes from using my desire z. My question is do any of you own a galaxy s2?

No, I had an HTC Desire. Yes, it's a much smaller phone. No, after a few months with the Note I don't notice its size at all. Ever, in fact. I still wear all the same trousers. The size is the best thing about the Note.
Really, really, really, like almost everyone else on here, I think the future is for smartphones to grow to around the Note's size. In the past, people wanted tiny phones, after all they were simply for making phone calls.
Now everyone wants to have the internet in their pocket. Phone is pretty much secondary. For that, you want the biggest screen you can fit in a pair of jeans.
This is the Note.
One day, all smartphones will be this size!

I think you might be right. I was talking to friends about the note aand they say that it's too big for calls. I think generally opinion changes when you own the device itself.

beware... think twice before buying the note as once you have it you will have a permanent disability....
you will be incapable of using another device with a smaller screen...

If i were to get this phone, what kind of case would really protect the glass on the screen from shattering? I would really like to use tpu cases and would they protect the screen? I know a screen protector is essential.

An Evo user's thoughts on the Epic...

My immediate first impression: It looks better in person that it does in pictures online. I thought it looked pretty bland when I first saw it online, but in person, it's not bad. It definitely looks better than the Samsung Captivate on AT&T, but I still think that the Vibrant looks the best. Once I picked it up, I was surprised by how light it was. Initially, I was disappointed; I thought for a split-second that it was a dummy model that I was holding. It was noticeably lighter than the Evo. I couldn't, however, decide if this was good or bad. The lack of heft puts the Epic 4G dangerously close to being perceived as "cheap and plastic-y". The phone (as well as the other Galaxy S phones) just didn't feel that solid to me. Especially compared to phones that have some noticeable heft to them, like the Evo and Nexus One. I feel that if it were dropped from waist-high, it would shatter into a million pieces or something.
The lack of heft aside, the phone feels really good in the hand. It's rounded corners fell better than the Evo. But because of the keyboard, the phone is pretty thick. I noticed that trying to use the phone with one hand can be difficult sometimes (and I have fairly large hands), especially when trying to reach things at the top of the screen (like the notification bar).
The screen: I have mixed feelings about Samsung's Super AMOLED screen. When I turned on the screen for the first time, one word popped in my head: OVERRATED (the same word that came to me when seeing the iPhone 4's "retina display" for the first time). I honestly don't see the hype. Yes, if you're looking at a picture / movie, the colors look amazing. But looking at text, on the other hand, is a different story. The main problem that I had with the SAMOLED screen is the "screen door effect". You can see the individual pixels! What's worse, you can see them without even looking hard. They are just there, in your face. I have perfect vision, and I have to put my Evo pretty close to my face in order to make out individual pixels. On the Epic, you can see them everywhere. It's really bad when looking at text on a white background (like on almost every website). You can see the white lines in-between the black of the letters. It's like looking at a mini chess board. Here's a picture so you can get an idea for yourself:

I would rather take a regular AMOLED, TFT LCD, or Retina display any day of SAMOLED
Ahhh, the keyboard. This is the ONLY reason I even considered swapping the Evo for an Epic. In short: it's really good. It's one of the best landscape keyboards I've ever used. The keys are really clicky, and are a nice size. My only complaint is that I wish they were domed more. Because they are flat, my fingers tended to slide over to adjacent keys. I'm sure with time I would be really fast & accurate on it. The only landscape keyboard that's better than this one is the one on the Touch Pro 2. That this is amazing.
I'm not gonna talk too much about the software, since we all know what Android is about. What I will say is that TouchWiz isn't that bad. It's actually better than the skin Motorola has put on the Droid2 and DroidX. It's not as good as Sense UI, but it's definitely better than stock Android. Overall, everything I did on the phone was super fast. Scrolling was smooth, and it didn't lag at all. No complaints.
Minor annoyances: -There is a dedicated smiley button on the keyboard… wtf. It would be much more useful it they put the @ symbol there, instead of it. -For some reason, Samsung likes putting the lock/power button on the right side of the phone. Not a big deal on the other Galaxy S phones, but every time I would lock/unlock the phone, the keyboard would move/open a little.
Final thoughts: It's a really good phone. If I had the choice today to either get a free Epic or a free Evo, I'm about 65% sure I'd take the Evo. If I was a new Sprint customer, there is almost no way to justify taking this phone over the Evo, especially seeing as how it's $50 more… Unless, of course, you abso-freakin-lutely need a physical keyboard.
I echo the same thoughts as you and still have my evo, i will try the epic out for 30 days and see if it grows on me but I have slight evo withdrawals. The physical keyboard is nice, I feel like I would miss having that option.
The screen is growing on me, I really love how readable it is in the sun and the colors and contrast are really great.
Another thing you left out is how incredibly fast this phone is. Even at 2.1 without CM6 it blows the EVO out of the water in every way, there is virtually no lag and you don't see the typical tearing or jitterness you get on the EVO. I can't even imagine how smooth it will be when 2.2 is on here...
The one thing that will determine whether I keep it is if the development community will be as good as the EVO. The EVO dev community from the start was bursting with life but the epic dev community seems rather flat and slow so far.
Another concern is Samsungs commitment to keeping the phones up to date and bug free. Something I don't have too much faith in as I saw how they pretty much ignored Samsung Moment customers.
Nice review.
I also own both an EVO and the Epic. My decision to switch was based on the keyboard and the processor speed. Both lived up to my expectations. The speed actually exceeded my expectations, whereas the keyboard isn't as good for games as I thought it would be. Wish it had a more game-like dpad. I think EVERYONE is pissed off about the decision to have a dedicated smiley button.
I'm actually very impressed with the screen. Unfortunately if you look closely you can see the pixels... but only when it's still. I honestly think it's mind bogglingly good when playing games or watching movies. The size of the EVO's screen is definitely a plus. So big. But I can see my Epic SO MUCH BETTER in direct sunlight. Even with auto-brightness on. With my EVO, I had to manually crank it up to 100% to get even a slight idea what I was looking at.
I actually found it to be so much faster than the EVO (even with 2.2). Games feel soo much smoother. Especially 3D games. And I am a huge gamer. Also, surprisingly, TW isn't all that bad (as you said). I actually plan on keeping it for a while. On my EVO I ran launcher pro, but sense is nice too. The EVO has the edge in widgets. No manufacturer's UI has anything close to the same quality widgets that sense has.
I actually don't mind the weight of this phone. I know the EVO feels heavy and sturdy, but the reason the SGS phones are so light is because of their screen technology. Both phones have the same soft-touch back.
All in all, I'm really glad I made the switch. I'm having a lot of fun with the Epic. The only thing I miss from my EVO is the GPS... but we're getting a fix for this this month.
Oh and one more thing. Stock battery life on my Epic KILLS what I experienced on my EVO. I'll post some battery life results later. I almost think my phone is a fluke.
I'd definitely recommend this phone to a new Sprint customer. But that's just my vote. I'm sure other EVO users will chime in.
I feel the same to going to test it a little more for the next 2 weeks I am having 3g probelms for some reason a lot slower then my evo and the wifi shuts on and off but the screen is nice keyboard is awasome and is really fast but evo will make a come back

Which phone did you end up sticking with?
I too own both, feel like I miss stuff from the EVO, but I am giving the Epic more time to grow. love the screen and +1 for the camera, the Evo has failed me so many times with the camera. Some goods and some bads. if it had tilt/kickstand that would be sweet.

If you get the dock, it will work as a kickstand (its tilted just right). Unfortunately the dock isnt as portable and the headphone hack on the back wont work until the Epic gets 2.2 apparently.
What else do you miss from the EVO? Aside from the large screen? I also have an EVO and it just sits around. I never have any desire to pick it up... but I also refuse to sell it.

Ahm..both AMOLED and Super-AMOLED are pen-tile...aka what you showed in the picture above is for both...
Though there are many reasons to justify an Epic over an EVO..keyboard and screen are not the only reason that make the Epic shine...

He makes a good point. The difference with super amoled is that the touch sensor is integrated into the screen, making the overall display MUCH thinner and lighter. It's still AMOLED. Bright and brilliant. I absolutely love it.
i dont know man.. that picture in the first post doesnt look like my epic.. ( I know its a vibrant, i meant the screen) I even put it on the same contacts screen and i dont notice the pixels like i see them in that picture.. and i have 20/20 vision myself. This screen is amazing to me. especially coming from a touch pro 2. and my buddy has the evo.. His screen looks a little washed out next to mine. But it still looks good though dont get me wrong. I love the size of the evos screen and the kickstand is great too. I just needed the keyboard and processor speed which is why i ended up waiting for the epic to come out.. either way both phones are the best you can get on the market right now
heres a close up of how mine looks. i tried to use a similar screen.. this is with a 10mp camera in macro mode so its pretty close up.. the screen wasnt on full brightness. i can see the pixels in this picture because its so close but i cant get close enough with my eyes to even notice it

Considering the monitor size..the left picture is what you see..the right picture if what you would see with a magnifying glass...its not really a fair representation.
What he is seeing is not exactly individual pixels..more like jaggedness..this jaggedness is seen on some small fonts and on straight lines..mostly white lines..but even when text is jagged it is still perfectly readable..it kinda looks a little italic or sharpened lol...on things like bold font or zoomed in text its fairly un-noticable.

The evo's screen (and the Iphone's) look very washed out next to one another. Compare title screens for Angry Birds.

Why Samsung was a better choice than HTC

1. Processor/GPU.
2. Super Amoled.
3. Touch Screens.
4. Build Quality.
5. Freshness.
6. Great speakers.
I also think Google chose Samsung because of two very big HTC ****ups / backstabs.
1. The Nexus One. A Great Phone...
Except for the touch screen.
This was Google's "baby". And what did HTC do? They shipped all of their devices with faulty touch screens. ALL of them. And people overlook this? Why? This is HUGE. People say Samsung has a bad track record but this dwarfs Samsung's software issues. No I'm not speaking out of my ass, as I do own a Nexus One. I forked 350$ out for one why? Just so I could attempt to deal with the multi-touch issues on my projects.
2. HTC G2. Anti-Root.
No more comment on this. Of course they eventually figured it out, but HTC didn't want you to.
3. ?
Terrible, scratchy speakers on the Nexus One. Even on the G2.
What are your thoughts? I understand some people prefer the metal and hate the plastic. I for one love the aluminum on the iPad and Macbook Airs. However I also like the way the plastic feels on the Vibrant minus the 'creaks'. It feels very smooth in comparison to the G2 for instance.
HTC has been great to me but I am happy Google went with Samsung.
Without the SuperAMOLED I wouldn't even be considering this phone as an upgrade to my Nexus-1
I agree with you OP. I loved the look and feel of the Vibrant, but i kept my N1 because of the "Pure Google" experience. I always thought to myself i wish the Galaxy S phone had Vanilla android, that would be amazing! We will see next week.

Pretty much everything Anderdroid said we both went from Nexus one to galaxy S phones so have plenty of experience between both hardware of the N1/NS
even without SAMOLED this phone its better than nexus one
better multitouch up to 5 finger registration, better external speaker and sound quality is excellent whether its from external,3.5 and even stereo bluetoooth. Not to mention ridiculously fast mobile GPU
But yea SAMOLED is a huge plus IMO produces better whites doesn't seem to have the bluish/purplish tint that i noticed with my N1 and also better in direct sunlight

Oh yeah! I forgot about how trashy the G2's and Nexus One's speakers are.
HTC failed on screen (multi-touch plague) and speakers - these 2 things alone, made me hate them.

I completely agree with you. You said everything.
I was planning to switch my HTC Desire for a Galaxy S, but the Galaxy S looks too much like an iPhone, and out of the box has bad system file, and touchwiz and stuff like that. Now Nexus S is out, with an unique, gorgeous design, I'm probably gonna buy it. Just wanna see some more reviews.
I honestly don't agree that it looks too much like an iPhone... How exactly? Even then I'm not even anti-iPhone so w/e. I think it has a better design than the iPhone.

I've got an iPhone 3Gs before my Desire, so I know what I'm talking about.
Many of my friends that saw the Galaxy S phone just said : "holy crap what an iPhone-Like!" without knowing anything about the phone.
With the metal around it, a kind of speaker above, a big home button under the screen, makes it look like an iPhone.

I agree with everything the OP said and then some:
- super evil NAND lock on devices making the whole "open" in the OS to pretty much heavily locked down. To date Samsung were very relaxed about securing their devices in evil ways.
Better reach of Samsung all over the world. For exmaple, here in India HTC support is pathetic/kind of non existence. They have just started setting up their own service centers. Whereas samsung is pretty establisehd in this part of the world since long time. So I assume samsung has a wider reach.
But would love to see HTC expand their market here. Very few HTC models here
Samsung was probably the better choice.. though, I don't think I appreciate the material they used to make the NS. The N1 may have had a faulty touchscreen (wasn't that the same touch panel used on all the devices HTC made, prior to their more recent ones?).. but at least it didn't have a plastic covered casing that adores fingerprints.
I don't know exactly what the problem is with using plastic, but everyone doesn't like it.. so.. I'm jumping on the bandwagon, lol. In all seriousness though, why exactly is this so horrible?

Because it feels/looks more cheap then say, N1/Desire/Iphone 4 etc, the look suits more of a mid range phone, then a top end smartphone.
I have to say one thing I loved about the N1 was the teflon (or whatever it was) coating on the battery panel and back/sides of the phone. It would shrug off fingerprints and was quite hard to nick/scratch. Although after almost a year of use, my N1 does show some of the coating peeling off near the headphone jack and also near the USB plug.
SAMOLED has the bluish tints with their whites as well. And the Pentile Matrix arrangement used in SAMOLED results in not so sharp text. S-LCD is better in that way. Obviously overall both screens kind of tie out.
I agree with most of these posts. Vanilla android plus galaxy s is a dream come true.

I hate hearing that because it makes me wonder if all those tests I've done saying I have 20/20 vision are incorrect since I can't ever see what you all are talking about unless i literally press my eyeball up against the screen. And even then, the screen on my Captivate doesn't have any 'matrices' showing.
Or maybe you just go along with what the detractors say without actually checking out a SAMOLED screen

Why does GNote 1 screen look better then GNote 2?

I've had S3 and it's the best screen ever.
I am let down however with the GN2 screen, it looks bland and lacking detail, it's like looking at the S3 then iphone 5 and noticing the difference in colors.
I even compared it to the GNote 1 side by side and the galaxy note 1 just looked much better, better colors no doubt.
Am I the only one or have other people found the same thing?

Note 2 colors are much more "accurate" as they say...
Maybe you like oversaturated colors more? becauee another example you gave of iphone 5, Display Mate has said that the display of iphone 5 is more "accurate colors" than that of s3.
But some people (me too!) like oversaturation and inaccuracy more
settings>display>screen mode>dynamic
that should bring out a bit more color.

Yes I understand all the comparisons in pixels/ RBG/ pentile. The GNote 2 on paper is impressive but, when I actually help the device and looked at it, it looked lacking. I don't know, I'm still note convinced by the replies.

yes S3 is not so good outside in day time for me even when the screen is full bright up all the way.. looks like the note 2 is more brighter to see outside in day time..i had the HTC one X and was bright and can see it really good at day time but seems like LCD sucks battery faster...
im looking to get a note again.... do you have to crank up the brightness on the note 2 to see it really good at day time sunlight?
thanks

I think that graphic is a bit misleading as it has been scaled up slightly on the S3 to match sizes.
I have both the S3 and the Note 2 and yeah in some ways the S3 screen is better but I would say it's due to the PPI.
One thing that is right on in that pic is the green tint on the S3. Holding them side by side it's certain that colors are truer on the Note 2 and white is more white etc.
note 2 is a improvement of the s3 pentile matrix. Its not up for debate. Its like saying ps1 has better graphics then ps2.
Why the denial?

Here in HK alot of users had reported that texts and images appear to be much sharper on the note 1. It has to do with the S-stripe subpixel arrangement of the new note 2 screen, heres an article that explains it in more details (please cutout the spaces before and after the word "uwants". Site is also in chinese but u should be able to get the idea looking at the pics):

I agree with the OP. The whites on my screen appear a little beige-ish when held parallel to the eye. Once you tilt it, in any direction you see the pure whiteness. I tried this at various brightness levels. I dont think this is a matter about comparing pixels and sub-pixel arrangement. The colors on first glance look superb better than any screen that ive seen. But when you tilt the screen a bit, that when u realise what superb really is! but holding it staright, the whites are certainly not so white.
Ive also read that all Amoleds are different and that could be one of the reasons. And im not sure if Samsung will replace the unit for this? Has anyone tried to replace the handset before, with any other Galaxies due to this screen problem?
I have both andI Note II has the better screen specially outdoor visibility .However the screen being more tinted is making the whites slightly duller.
A faulty screen. Normal problem of all AMOLED screens that the quality is varied.
I Can't believe all the bad talk over this screen. Received my unit today. In my eyes, this is the best screen on any mobile device that I have owned. It looks fantastic!!! Whites look good, blacks are fantastic, and colors pop. It's even usable outside in the sun. I'm coming from an S3, and have also owned the One X, iphone 4 and the original Note.

Yeah, if it's not for the screen. I would have gone for the Xperia Z a long time ago! That washed out screen was such a huge disappoinment:crying:
We'll I've got used to the screen now and guess what???
I started up the GS3 yesterday to see how bad the XZ screen really is.
Talk about a painful experience. Text was blurry and literally hurt my eyes compared to Xperia and colours are atrocious.
And a new patch from Sony is going to include white balance adjustment in display settings.
Also 4Mb photos
Personally Xperia Z is a better phone than GS3, HTC OneX, Nexus 4 and HTC One. All phones I have owned bar the One... I used one for two days and that was enough.
My Xperia Z just works...

GS3's screen is a horrible display and I agree that Xperia Z is much better, but still fall far behind other flagships and even its predecessors like Xperia S, Ion in term of contrast. Even Xperia ZL has better screen than Z...:silly:.
That's not to mention about the viewing angle, which is seriously much worse than HTC old models that use TFT Super LCD
Viewing angles are fine, I love the screen. But... Screens and viewing angles etc- never been a problem or complaint until the reviews started moaning lol.
#SaveHTC
Most people have gadgets which has bad viewing angles. Like TFT monitors at work and home (most people dont have IPS monitors because of cost and response time on gaming), many tablets, and even LCD TV's.
And now a mobile phone with excellent color reproduction and resolution is getting bad reception because of viewing angles?
This is what I call hypocrasy.
Opinions are opinions but some people really have no justice.
Xperia Z is the best mobile phone I have used for a long time. It is an overall perfect phone. It doesnt deserve these critics at all.
Technological hype and competition has come to such a level that people are like slaves of media and corporations now.
Sorry for my small rant

Rumour means internet bullcrap in this context.
I have the device, don't have to visit shops lol, so I see you just repeat what you've read.
And compared it to all top end phones. Nothing is washed out.
It's just a UI which may make such an impression as well as Sony's contrast control mechanism
which prevents excessive batt usage which works on Sony's grey UI.
But the real performance is on par with SGSIV, HTC One etc.
There are videos showing it.
So please, stop the crap if you don't even know what you're talking about.

It's like you guys only check for contrast ratio when you look at displays. Ridiculous! The S has a horrible yellowy screen which is also present in the iPhone 5 and others.
The Z is the first flagship phone in a long time not to suffer from this tint issue.
I for one now see why Sony opted for the contrast ratio and color calibration, it produces a clear display free of that horrible tint.
Long may this continue, if you want a high contrast screen with yellowy look then you've got a lot of options out there.

Returning my Z1

Well I'm going to be returning my Z1 due to the very poor screen.
Everything on the screen isn't sharp enough (funny that as it's a Sharp panel) the colours are very poor. The white are more cream like.
Software is buggy if you turn off optimised backlight.
Ear piece speaker isn't loud enough, probably due to the waterproofing.
Camera is nothing to rave about either.
Yes some of these issues will be sorted out with updates but they might not and I'm not taking the risk on a £550+ device.
It's a shame because I really wanted to like the device but I'll be happy to go back to my Nexus 4!

Just give it a chance for it to settle. Try going to *#*#7378423#*#* and run a display test. Check if it's yellowish there. Unless my Xperia Ion has a yellow screen (highly doubt), I compared a C6903 and my ion screen yesterday via the service menu and whites looked white on both screens.

to me the Amoled screen makes everything look unnatural - like everything looks animated instead of real, it might be pretty to look at but it is just so lacking in detail and texture, I tried watching a movie on anS4 and it looked dark saturated and animated - honestly not really what anyone want
Ever wonder why they don't use Amoled screen on TV's ? if you answer that honestly then you will understand why the Z1 screen is preferable

It is difficult to fabricate and costly to fabricate large panel using AMOLED. the life of AMOLED is not high to be used in TV..Content mad is for sRGB gamut not for complete visual wavelength... gaming in AMOLED is awesome... other than that Z1 is awesome..

There is no way I'm accepting a device that is worse then the model it's replacing.
