"Bricked" - Xperia Play General

I've been seeing this word thrown around a lot around here. Frankly speaking, this is actually a word that should be seen only in rare circumstances. So from now on, I would like for you all to ask yourself a few questions when you're about to use the word, "bricked."
1. Does my phone boot?
2 . Can I access ClockworkMod Recovery, even if my phone doesn't boot all the way?
3. If I hold the back button in when I plug my phone into the computer, does the led on top turn yellow?
4. (unlocked bootloader) If I hold the search button in when I plug my phone into the computer, does the led turn blue?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are not bricked. Instead, your phone is messed, glitched, borked, scaring you, freaking you out, or making you cry.
Thank you for your time.

Um Dude Most people Know this, And this should be in Q&A that's Most Likely were People Say there "Bricked"| In most cases They are "Software Bricked"
Just saying Bricked Only means Hardware or Software. You should Know this that Q&A Stands for Questions and Answeres

The word "bricked" implies that your phone has become nothing more than a brick, and no, most people don't know that, otherwise they wouldn't use the word when ever something goes awry.
This doesn't belong in the Q&A section because I'm not asking a question, I'm making a point, even if I'm using questions in my post. I'm not seeking an answer to anything, and so I didn't post this in the Q&A section.

Is constantly rebooting considered bricked?

Have you answered all of the questions? Technically, for it to be constituted as a brick, it wouldn't boot at all.

lol OK, I see. Thanks...

This should be stickied. It annoys me to see this word incorrectly thrown around

Sorry to revive an old thread, a that goes against my forum etiquette, but I had a thought today.
What if, instead of "brick," people used the term, "paperweight?" Think about it: "Aww crap, I just paperweighted my phone."
After all, its really more of a paperweight than a brick these days. I think people would be less likely to misuse a term like "paperweight."
Agree? Disagree? Thoughts?

Bricked means the device has a total hardware failure. No way to turn it on or fix it. /thread
Sent from my iDevice.

its pretty hard to brick the Xperia Play, permabrick anyhows, But software bricks are easy and normally easy to fix (Flashtool).

Well in the case of mine, it really is bricked, even though it fits some of your criteria. In other words, you're generalizing and not giving accurate information.
Can I access flash mode? Yes.
Can I use fastboot? Yes.
Have I tried reflashing multiple types of software? Yes, and they installed just fine.
HOWEVER; is the phone usable? Nope.
Due to hardware problems, it is essentially a bricked phone until parts can be replaced. You can't navigate through the OS, or make calls, or even get into recovery. It is completely useless.

An appeal regarding use of "bricked"

People, please use word "bricked" properly. If your phone turns on, but doesn't boot, then it's not bricked. If your get the exclamation mark, it's not bricked. If you can get into the download mode, it's not bricked.
If you press the power button and know that your phone is charged and get no activity what so ever... yes, this is when your phone is bricked.

+1. IMO the Epic is un-brickable since Odin seems to work. The way I see it, the only way I'd ever ACTUALLY brick it is if I dropped it in the toilet!

While odin is great (since its what samsung uses) and gives us a lot of recoverability potential...its not "unbrickable"...its rare but not impossible.
Edit: Here is a snip-it from Heimdall (which is a community replacement for odin)
How do Galaxy S phones get bricked when flashing?
Besides the inherent risks like power outs, accidental removal of the USB cable etc. Galaxy S phones appear to be running somewhat unreliable USB control software.
A failure to flash does not automatically equate to a fully bricked phone. However if you’re extremely unlucky and the flash fails whilst transferring the primary boot-loader, secondary boot-loader or params.lfs (all quite small) than you’ve got yourself a paper weight until you can get it repaired via Samsung.

I was in a panic last night because people were saying DK05 would Brick phones... only to find out it was just a soft-brick to the modem. -___-
If that is the only reason why mods/admins have restricted release to DK05 then I have an issue with them.

Perhaps the restriction has to do with the possibility that the modem was "poisonous"?

[Q] 3 Android Men on Skateboards Issue

Hi everyone. I did a bit of searching and cannot find a solution to my problem. I have been jailbreaking iPhones since they first came out, but this is my first Droid phone. I bought this phone in this condition hoping to fix the issue and use it for myself.
So far I tried pulling the battery and turning on the phone with the power button and the volume down button. I get to the same screen with the three guys on skateboards.
I understand jailbreaking iPhones and rooting android phones is completely different, but i'm confident it won't be that difficult to catch on. So anyone who has any quick tips or a solution to my issue I would very much appreciate the help.

Second, what can you do to your phone, if anything at all.
Three, just try turning the phone on normally.

First of all Droid is a Trademarked from VZW and Lucas Arts. The HTC Incredible is know as a "Droid". and the DROID Charge is made by Samsung.
Second of all he told you. He can get into the hBoot, or bootloader.
Three he said said he bought with a condition that he had to fix. So i'm assuming it's pretty much all he/she can do. Quite being a jackwagon.
to the [OP], at the top of your screen you should see a .86.xxxx or a .85.xxxx or a .89.xxxx what are those numbers.
you will also see "s-on" or "s-off" which one do you see?
the reason i ask is because that will tell us what ROM you need to download and try to flash via the hBoot.

I was just trying to figure out exactly what he can do, so I can better understand the problem. Wasn't trying to start any problems with anyone. I just get a little annoyed when people call every Android a Droid, sorry if offended you or him.
From my fist to your face, enjoy.
Thanks neidlinger. So when I got to that screen with the three (An)Droid Men there was no text on the screen. I contacted HTC support and I sent them the phone since it was still under warranty. I did a bunch of searching and I do believe there is a hardware issue with the phone.
Highway. Your response was completely uncalled for. I stated in my post that I am unfamiliar with Android devices since I have primarily dealt with iOS devices. So first of all don't act like your suddenly entitled to insult and correct everyone who posts something a bit inaccurate, especially when they acknowledge their lack of experience in their post.
In my defense the first thing I said, it's something I always say,I was trying to give you some info. Not make you sound or look stupid. As for the other two, like I told him,I was trying to see what exactly you can do with your phone, so I can understand it an view it on my phone, to see how I would fix the problem. sorry if my military background is a problem with y'all, maybe for now on,I won't bother to help anymore.

I know this is black and white, and it's really hard to "read" how someone typed something. Rather it be in a light joking manner or full of sarcasm. We thank you for the help. It' means alot to everyone that visits these forums. But one can say "you have a face that will stop a clock" or "when i look at you time stands still". It's in essence the same exact phrase with the same exact meaning but it can be taken two totally different ways.
to the [OP], hope you enjoy your new Android phone. You'll see it has it's ups and downs to iOS. Make sure to hand around, you might learn something here and there.

As a pretty unknowledgeable semi-active member of XDA who reads every single root/return to factory related post before rooting his phone, who tries to help other members a little bit when I can, who learns some code when he has time, I also mess and play with my phone a lot. Occasionally, I do stuffs with my phone that I don't really understand because of the confidence that I (probably) won't brick my phone and as long as I can boot to the boot loader then I am fine.
But... I still feel that doing stuffs without knowing what is the really idiotic stuffs to avoid is kinda dumb.
So my question is, what kind of actions from the phone/adb would lead to a permanent dysfunction of a Nexus 4?

Honestly, I don't even know anything that can brick the Nexus 4. The only thing that comes to mind is that red blinking LED that people get but I'm not even sure where that comes from, as far as I can tell its from benchmarking with AnTuTu.
Most of the "brick" threads from the Nexus 4 are misleading because their devices aren't really bricked. They just dont know how bootloader mode + fastboot works and are unable to get themselves flashed back to stock.
This is also a illegal topic to talk about on XDA, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1849195
Thanks for your answer.
I'll stop discussing this then.

[Q] hard bricked

today i accepted an OTA update,
i was previously root with an unlocked BL. i RDS lite back to facotry and i was unrooted, therefore thought it safe to
install update. the phone now wont turn on, no matter the combination of buttons.
i know it has a charge its been on the charger forever. no LED light of any kind, and plugging it by usb to PC has no results either.
im pretty sure i hard bricked this device.
at any rate i cant get a warranty for two reasons :
1. unlocked BL
2. denied replacement dude to crack in back glass..
so im a SOL?????
I havent heard of this procedure bricking anyone else, so maybe your phone just thinks the battery is dead. Team Black Hats factory adapter may fix this for you.
If it bricked because of the update, it's the provider's fault, so they should cover it. However, me thinks there is more to this story.
Sent from my Droid Razr M using xda app-developers app
Theres nothing more to the story.
It was on charge all night with the stock charger.. Nothing.
Phone was rooted I unrooted it. Boot loader still unlocked.
I accepted the ota and it won't do anything. I was denied a warranty replacement in store because the back glass has a crack.
Anyway the device is useless I bought an s4 today. And I'm selling the RAZR M to the highest bidder.

There's no attacking. Before we even had chance to help you, you scrapped the phone and went and bought another one. When you originally posted, you didn't give any details to help us out. Personally, I don't believe only the OTA would cause a brick, but as we all know, no one cares what I think.
If your battery is good, you should be able to get into your recovery menu and restore your backup. If you can't do that, you might try to get into the fastboot menu and fastboot back to stock. If you hold the power button, volume down, and volume up at that same time, you should be able to get into the fastboot menu. When in the menu, scroll down with vol- button and choose your choice by hitting the vol+ button. If you can't get the phone to boot into FB, then you are probably stuck. However, if you can get into recovery and/or fastboot, you don't have a brick.

Dear rikrong.
First. Please read I supplied every detail I can absolutely express about my phone and what happened.
Second I do important business and there's no point in tying up time in waiting for a fix to my phone when I can get a new one. Why waste the time when I was expecting a customer to call about a $5000 job?
I'm not "some kid" and unlike you I have business to do and don't have time to troll on a forum for people seeking help with their devices. Hold your tongue and don't pass judgment on someone you don't know.
And don't worry about hurting my feelings. I GUARANTEE you don't have the mental capacity to offend me, friend.
I would like to revive the device and donate it to a family member or friend who could make better use of it than I.
To wrap this up, no button combos or ANYTHING will turn the device on, it literally is a brick, I heard of JTAG and this may be the route I will take..

I tried to offer some help, after realizing how I did come off as an ass in my original post, but you fired right back at me. So,have fun.
I stand my my recommendation in post #2. It doesnt make sense that this procedure would brick your phone so my feeling is that its not bricked. I had a similar experience with my D2G back in day. For $10 team black hats factory adapter is worth a shot. Even if you stick with the S fixing your XT907 will fetch you more money on the market.

Help! How to fix Hard-Bricked Samsung Galaxy S4?

Hard Bricked Phone: A Phone that won't turn on by any means. Booting to the OS or even opening the Custom/Stock recovery or Download Mode simply won't work.
I've searched plenty of forums regarding Android phones that are "Bricked". But it seems to me that most of the instructions laid out by the "replyer" require the phone to be opened up using special combinations of buttons that would either lead to the Custom/Stock recovery mode or the Download mode which is basically a definition of a "Soft Bricked Phone". A phone wherein it would still turn on and simply has problems with how the OS/Kernel/whatever runs.
Problem: I toyed with my Samsung Galaxy S4 in such a way that it would deal with underclocking my phone. I know that underclocking is a risky thing to do. But I was lowering it to the point where My phone would still run stable... until one day it just suddenly gave out. My phone would still turn on but for about 2 seconds and it would turn itself off immediately. That means that even if i was fast enough to go into the download mode or to my Custom Recovery mode, it would still shut off completely as if I pulled my battery out of my phone.
I'm not really in an INSANE need of help to repair my phone, but a good "Fixing a Hard-Bricked Phone is impossible." or something would definitely help as it would give me a sense of peace around all the threads claiming that they can fix such said phones that are in the same working condition as a brick.
thank you for any help.
:Bump:
Yeah, if the device doesn't turn on through any manner of key press combinations, you're pretty much screwed. I assume when you connect the device to the PC you get nothing?
If I use some type of flashing program from my pc that detects my phone on download mode, it sort off detects it for half to a full second until my phone will give in.
Thanks for the reply.

JTAG? As in that Jtag brick repair where in you disassemble the back part of your phone and you have to connect the Riff/Jtag box to the 6 small pins and use a software on the computer to use the "resurrection" button? . Looking at that process, it does make it possible to unbrick insanely bricked phones. However I do need a device for that and a bit of electronic skills in which I have no background on. Not to mention that buying such device almost costs the same as buying another Samsung galaxy s4 from where I come from. Seems like overkill at this point haha.
Thanks for the reply as it did answer my question, but I think I'll try sticking to other possible alternatives if any. :fingers-crossed:
@gobbler6000: Not to mention owning one of those devices is questionable legality, depending on where you are.
To be honest, after five years, it's not worth trying to resurrect a dead S4. Sell it for parts and purchase a newer device. Used devices should be easy to come by, and I'm sure you could get a good bargain that way.

Link seems kinda scammy. It's also of no help to the OP. Besides the fact this thread is from last year, the OP's device was hard-bricked. Your link spends most of its bandwidth on soft-brick solutions, devoting only a single paragraph on hard bricks. That one paragraph on the page can be summed up in two words: you're screwed.
