ROOT NS without unlocking/CWM - Nexus S General

I have recently found this VERY simple guide to root NS
http://www.blogotechblog.com/2012/03/root-galaxy-nexus-s-on-imm76d-ics-4-0-4/
is this working? (havent tried yet). i thought unlocking&cwm was necesary to root. will it work for european i9023? will it wipe my data? apps? contacts? thx.

If you see at the comments it says that custom recovery is required so you have to unlock bootloader too...
If someone knows a way to root without unlocking etc, i'm interested too because this method that worked in 4.0.3 doesn't seem to work in 4.0.4...

You have to unlock and flash a custom recovery to root. There's no way around it.

That is a Facebook Comment and the tutorial has been posted by me!

Why don't you just unlock it, root it, then re-lock it.

I want to avoid wiping my phone and besides wiping, I think from what I have read that restoring stock recovery too for OTA updates needs a quite complicated procedure if I remember right...

then please enlighten me, do i need custom recovery for rooting? because in your article there is not a single word about it.

Yes you need a custom recovery for rooting.

Hi, my name is Gerardo, I had a HTC Evo, from sprint,

but today i download the cyanogen and after reboot my cell i see the android dool
in the skateboard but nothing hapen, is never turn on the cell, NOW, WHAT I DO WRONG!!
If any one can help i appreciate, the true i don't speak and read perfect english,
but the first steps for rooting my cell i do good, so i think i can fix my cell.
thank you for your help!
Did you do a full wipe of cache, dvalik and data before flashing Cyanogen? Sounds like you are stuck in a boot loop with a bad flash.
Boot back into the bootloader power and volume down. Then go boot into recovery and wipe all, dalvik, and cache. Then reflash cyanogenmod 7. (Did you make a backup before?)

If you are seeing them androids on them skateboards, I am assuming you are in the bootloader or in the fastboot mode already.
Choose recovery, and then reboot.
If you dont see recovery, try bootloader, then recovery and then reboot system.
Welcome to CM7. Follow Blamme instructions if youre on a black screen with Cyanogen logo. Follow Idlemonk instructions if white screen with 3 androids at bottom.

I think he is talking about blue Cyanogen Android on a skateboard (boot animation).
But for the OP, just power up by holding volume down & power button, then go to recovery wipe everything and reflash.

No, that will just flash the Clockworld recovery, which sucks.
If you want to do it through ROM Manager go to Download Rom, press menu, sort by downloads, and Google Apps should be the second option.
But it is better just to use the link novanosis85 gave, it would be easier to find the .zip if you manually download it.

Shouldn't be too bad of a deal, if you nandroid backed up your your rom before you flashed CyanogenMod. Just nandroid recover. If you did not back up your rom before you flashed, then you have to completely wipe everything and reboot. If it still does not load than you could have gotten a bad download. You can find info on how to fix your problem in the Evo forums.

Search on here for Gapps 20110504 or get them from the download link where you got your Cyanogen ROM. Save to root of SD and flash same way you flashed ROM.

[how-to] flash ics easily

i dono why. i don understand at all. why do we need to flash this, reboot, flash this and that, and then flast this......
come on! i am now in LP5 by just flashing the factoryfs and zImage, followed by a wipe and that's all!! why do we need to care about the boot loader? and why to concern about to repartition it or not? pls, do it your way. flashing a rom is only a file copy process!!
i respect all ppls' work. but for me, i prefer to let the user happy by flashing a rom or finishing a task in one single step.
New installation steps for ICS Stunner @ Stunner Topic. Much Simple.
These steps didn't work for LP1 based ROM and it broke root previously.

My understanding is that If you flash the bootloader you will risk bricking your phone also no way to revert back to GB.
Does your simple way preserve root and allow for an easy way back to GB? If it does could you provide some simple, fool-proof instructions? Thanks.
We're finally seeing developers include kernel and modem files in their ROMS, so it's getting easier...before it was, "flash this base, reboot, wipe, flash this base, reboot, flash this base, flash it again and reboot, flash my ROM 2x, reboot 2x, enjoy. Repeat from beginning if you messed up." Okay, so a little over the top, but that's what it felt like to me. I'm definitely happy with the progress being made!
actually all i wanted is to push the rom makers to go a step further, by telling them that even by just flashing the zimage and system will do so they should provide proper script to run the installation automatically. i am glad to see the procedures become simplier. but on the other hand i hope ppl will pay more time to prepare the installation steps and be user friendly

root permissions can be retained or restored. back to gb is totally possible. it all depends on the rom makers to make it or not

Can anyone guide me through flashing my a500?

Hello guys
So I'm basically a noob when it comes to flashing.
I'm trying to install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1961469 rom
I've tried so many times trying to install it. even used rom manager and acer recovery installer.
So in bullet points this is where i am:
Acer a500 is rooted
Installed Clockworkmod rev 1.7 by thor2002ro for ICS bootloader(do they mean stock bootloader?) from acer recovery installer.
restarted the tab into recovery, but says recovery verified failed.
I dont know what to do now.
Can anyone please assist, and explain to me in really noob steps what to do now?

I had the same issue yesterday using afterota. I tried installing a recovery by using an application from Google Play, but that didn't work. I think windows didn't install the apx driver in time while afterota was working. I retried the process with afterota and it worked the second time.
Hope it helps.

Definitely yes, but not right now. Developers are working on it as we speak. The kernel is what is preventing people from rooting, which can definitely be worked around. I'd say hang tight it shouldn't be too much longer.

From what I understood you can just odin a custom recovery, use the recovery to flash crawjr's MDL rooted rom, then flash Shabby's custom kernel and you're good to go. I could be wrong, but that's how I understood it.

Well then you better do things manually, because one wrong click on a toolkit and you're screwed. Seriously, do it manually and you'll learn how to sort out future issues. Also, don't post duplicate threads since I've just replied to another thread that you've created about the exact same thing.
In fact, it would do you a lot of good to read the new user guide in my sig. I'm not being rude, just realistic. You seem to know very little about this right now and the sooner you get used to XDA the faster you'll be able to find what you need.

You should check out Carbon in the playstore. I believe it's made by koush and it's supposed to work without root.
You ask this as you do not have your bootloader unlocked I suppose?

Correct.
Using a tool kit may look easier since you just have to select an option, but honestly the guide here is more or less cut and paste into the command line. Plus there's no harm in reading and gaining more information so that you don't panic when you get into a bootloop or brick. I get that you're new to android rooting, but if you're going to do something like unlock a bootloader, might as well in from the deep end.
