Possible to root after taking mdl update? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Is this possible, I've been reading and I here yes and no. I didn't have root to start with. Any definitive answers would be appreciated

Definitely yes, but not right now. Developers are working on it as we speak. The kernel is what is preventing people from rooting, which can definitely be worked around. I'd say hang tight it shouldn't be too much longer.

From what I understood you can just odin a custom recovery, use the recovery to flash crawjr's MDL rooted rom, then flash Shabby's custom kernel and you're good to go. I could be wrong, but that's how I understood it.

That's what I did and it's working. Took awhile to figure out but should be easier now because the directions are much clearer.

So it sounds like if you haven't rooted yet. It's still safe to take this update and still be able to root later if you we decide to.

I decided to install the OTA update with root and no custom recovery, I was a bit lazy and knew the most it would do is soft brick the phone. I had no issues at all with the update although root did disappear. YMMV:good:

MDC/MDL
Could someone explain the difference between MDL and MDC? thanks.

Yes
Follow these steps on this thread

also if you get popup in notification bar warning you about unauthorized access make sure you erase(or mod file extension) KnoxAgent.apk & Knoxagent.odex
that did the trick for me and now im rooted with MDL
so far the UI feels smoother and thats pretty much it for me now.:silly:

Need Help Please

First off I'm pretty new to this. I followed the instructions flashing my stock DI18 to DK28. It works just fine no problems. I want to be able to flash back to DI18. How do I do this. Without using Odin. Is there a way just to download a DI18.zip and install it into the root of my sd card power, volume down and camera button flash it? Someone please help.
Thanks
Tom
Here go Here next time search for stock d118 in the development section the wiki helps alot too.
Flash in clockwork if you have it or rename update.zip

I think if you just rename the zip file to update.zip and put it into the root of your sd card you should be able to flash not rooted in stock recovery.

I keep getting a signature not verified error or something along those lines

I have the file, yes, but I am in one of my courses and do not have my cable with me to test this. I'll be home in a few hours and I'll update with whether or not it worked. I really like the update but I just cannot stand the rotation issue. It is constantly switching orientations on me and it is near impossible to get it righted again.

[how-to] flash ics easily

i dono why. i don understand at all. why do we need to flash this, reboot, flash this and that, and then flast this......
come on! i am now in LP5 by just flashing the factoryfs and zImage, followed by a wipe and that's all!! why do we need to care about the boot loader? and why to concern about to repartition it or not? pls, do it your way. flashing a rom is only a file copy process!!
i respect all ppls' work. but for me, i prefer to let the user happy by flashing a rom or finishing a task in one single step.
New installation steps for ICS Stunner @ Stunner Topic. Much Simple.
These steps didn't work for LP1 based ROM and it broke root previously.

My understanding is that If you flash the bootloader you will risk bricking your phone also no way to revert back to GB.
Does your simple way preserve root and allow for an easy way back to GB? If it does could you provide some simple, fool-proof instructions? Thanks.
We're finally seeing developers include kernel and modem files in their ROMS, so it's getting easier...before it was, "flash this base, reboot, wipe, flash this base, reboot, flash this base, flash it again and reboot, flash my ROM 2x, reboot 2x, enjoy. Repeat from beginning if you messed up." Okay, so a little over the top, but that's what it felt like to me. I'm definitely happy with the progress being made!
actually all i wanted is to push the rom makers to go a step further, by telling them that even by just flashing the zimage and system will do so they should provide proper script to run the installation automatically. i am glad to see the procedures become simplier. but on the other hand i hope ppl will pay more time to prepare the installation steps and be user friendly

root permissions can be retained or restored. back to gb is totally possible. it all depends on the rom makers to make it or not

[Q] Help with some of the basics (root&unroot)

Ok so i know i am a newbie to this sort of thing but i wanted to wrap my head around everything and also specifically to my phone before i decide to do something and the results are permanent.
Firstly ill start off with saying im a Canadian Virgin Mobile customer and i just got the Galaxy S4 (SGH-i337m).
Ok so i want to root my device but i am confused about some of the basic concepts. I saw the tutorial video posted for my specific phone by the smoking android (link for those who havent seen it: youtube. com/watch?v=cI9r5dEcNo4) and i understand that the rooting process is fairly simple.
What i am confused about though is my options once i am a root user and if i ever chose to revert back to original. Lets say i went ahead and rooted my phone. Will i be able to software update through the updates that virgin sends me? also if i am able to then will i maintain root acess?
my second biggest question is lets say for whatever reason i want to go back to the way my phone is now, with the stock virgin firmware. is this possible? and with no trace of the root before (is this the same as achieving original status instead of a custom one)? i know that you can remove the root and then reset the binary counter but im not too sure how all of this works, its a lot to take in at once.
im just trying to clear things up and yes i am quite new to all this (got my s4 yesterday) but i am a quick learner and im just trying to get a grip on everything.
thanks in advance for bearing with me

Whats the lighest ROM on a TW ROM available?

I want a TW based ROM with HARDLY any Samsung bloat and no carrier bloat...
[GUIDE][ROMS]RUN OTHER CARRIER ROMs on AT&T/TMO/Canadian S4 devices. Here's how!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2295557
Start here, I list them all in my guide...
good luck..
Just install titanium backup and freeze the bloat yourself. If all you want us the stock rom without the bloat, that's the best and easiest method. Plus you won't have to worry about seeing your phone up again and you can unfreeze the bloat if you decide you want to try some of it out someday.
There's a zip called TrulyClean that wipes out pretty much everything that is not essential to the phone. I'd search for that and use it.

Since MF3 hasn't been released over KIES, the OTA hasn't been pulled, and packaged into a flashable zip. Somone has pulled their own system dump of MF3, but I suggest you want until you get the OTA notification.

Since rooting my phone, I am unable to do OTA. I have never done any custom ROMs but when I click software update on my phone nothing happens. I also cannot find any resolution to this. I was guessing that some setting in motochopper did something to break it, and I did a full phone restore to default settings after running triangle away and unrooting with no success.

Plz post results. I have a rooted mf3 and my OTA is broken as well. Not sure what did it. I don't really care about getting updates as much as I'm not sure if its broken and still set to auto update with no way to turn it off. That would suck.
The frist thing I did when I got the phone was make a adb backup so I have an .ab file but I have not tried it yet. And my phone was refurbed so I think it came with MF3 anyways. I may try reinstall that backup but I really hate to mess with it with no clockwork recovery options. Great phone to bad att is making it suck so bad.
