My Nexus 4 is on the way. Please guide the newbie :D

This is be the first time for me to use a high end smartphone.
May I know what are the things I should do with my new baby?
Things like Dos and Donts before anything bad happen. A list of must have useful apps and description will be much appreciated.

PS. I heard Titanium backup is best to keep your phone safe. Any comments?

Men titanium its a backup program,wich kind of safe are you saying?
To falls a good case,and to bad flash and things like that i recommend a lot of reading before flashing!

Do NOT FLASH any Nexus 7 kernel into your Nexus 4. One fella here already bricked a NEXUS device (Nexus device are very difficult to brick to how open they are).
Other than that, do whatever you want with the phone. It's an Android, and it's a Nexus.

I dont really know what to do with thte phone. Is it necessary to root for Nexus 4? Got major improvement for battery life and performance?

If you're new to the whole android scene....I strongly recommend that you just use the phone as you got it for 2 months FIRST.
While that's going on, read up through the forums, etc.
Just use it as it is first. =)

Id say the first thing you should do is get a case or a back film protector.
Then just read carefully if you want to start flashing. Read read and read again.

First few things to do with your phone
1. Charge it
2. Turn it on
3. Set up
4. Download apps you might need from play store (this will change over time )
5. Its a phone ffs use it as it is for few weeks. See what you like and what you don't. If you don't like something check if there is an app FIRST that will solve your problem . If you can't find an app think if its worth messing with the phone for one single tweak, unless you have found few things that bug you .
Stock android is nearly perfect and can do most/all of the things for normal user. Even customisation doesn't require root in most cases

Unlock the bootloader before you do anything on the phone. Unlocking it wipes all data, so best to do it when there's nothing on there anyway. Then it leaves you open to easily root in the future.

I read a bit about the bootloader. Unlocking it so that I can use fastboot is it? What are the specific benefits?

Easiest way I find it to either flash a custom recovery, or just boot from one and flash superSU.zip.

You can always switch to Stock ROM / Kernel, just use this Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit..

Before doing anything, assuming you're on stock rom now, make a nandroid backup from your recovery (TWRP or CWM). When you want to go back to stock then just restore that backup and you'll be good.
Or google offers the factory images of their devices and you just plug your phone in and run their script that comes with it and it flashes the factory stock rom.

Why, as an RC, are you recommending the use of toolkits? They serve no purpose other than the breed laziness and not to learn how to do anything yourself...

That won't, no. It will just reset the custom ROM. To go back to stock you either have to flash a stock ROM in ZIP form (I posted one a while back) or use the factory images supplied by Google to go back to stock (there is a guide in General by efrant on how to do this)

I personally wish the trend of using RCs would be dead.I hate how everything is 1 click away... kind of takes away the fun of unlocking, rooting and flashing. Oh well.

I feel that you are absolutely right. Even I used this tool to unlock & flash custom ROM on my N4. :good:

Yes with this tool you can switch back to stock android. Even you can re-lock your bootloader.

Not at all. I read, understood and then unlocked my phone and I have never ONCE used a toolkit. So long as you can read you should have no issues using adb and fastboot. If you don't understand, DO NOT DO IT!

We all start off as beginners.
Perhaps you'll flash a wrongzip, and you'll be in a bootloop and you'll be scared ****less. So you'll learn.
How about a toolkit? You flash a wrong zip, you quickly choose another mode and BAM. It's fine again. You don't LEARN anything.

I want to root my phone, the s4 as listed below. I am new to android but I think I understand how to root it. My concern is that there is no recovery. I am not sure what that means. Does that mean that one cannot unroot or does that mean that if you install a Custom rom that there is no going back? Or, does it mean something else? Thank you.

I think you do not understand how to root if there is no recovery. keep researching. you're a long way from safely rooting your phone.

OP, if your S4 is on the MF3 firmware then look around in the general and q&a sections. there's some material there that will point you in the right direction.
in short, if you are on MF3, you can root only (which i advise against for beginners as there currently is no recovery option). cheers

My question wasn't "what can I do with root?" I wanted to know if it was possible to "unroot" which apparently it is not yet. I would want to root to be able to get more out of titanium backup and Tasker as well as block ads. But thanks for the help.
And yes, I am on MF3. I had root on the prior os and I had to unroot to get the MF3 update which had features I wanted. I just don't know the proper terms I guess. I don't know what a recovery is. To unroot before, I had the two files I needed to delete. I foget what they are. I am sure you guys know. I used to always have my iOS jailbroken. I didn't need to understand too much about it. I could just follow instructions and jailbreak. It was too easy to unjailbreak.
Last time I rooted, it was easy. The unrooting was nerve-wracking because I couldn't get the update I wanted without it. I've read how to root now... Again I can follow directions. It just wasn't clear that you can't unroot until a recovery is is out there. I thought maybe a recovery was needed if you used a custom rom. I just wanted to use the stock rom and unroot if I wanted to.
Again, I'm not a hacker, just a user that wants more and not a whole lot of time to learn all the in and outs.

I suggest you do a little more research. There is a thread with a method to unroot that multiple people have claimed works with MF3. Of course, you never said what firmware you have...and it does make a difference. But honestly, don't take the advice if you think you don't need it and do what you want Good luck.

You were right, recovery is used to flash custom ROM, back up and restore ROM; but there is no recovery for MF3.
If you just want to use Titanium Backup, adblock then root is enough. And you can unroot.

Afraid to root my nexus 4

Well I just got a new one in the mail and I'm kind of afraid to root it, I rooted my htc evo 3d now it's bricked dwith a red light. Windows detects it but it won't boot but that's another ordeal. Anyway is it possible to brick my nexus 4 on 4.3?

I wouldn't worry about it. Just root using one of the software packages, or do it manually. There are many guides for this. It really is no big deal and almost nothing to worry about IMHO.
The biggest worry is that once you unlock and root, you'll want to flash. Then the addiction begins!!!!!

Just read and do all your researches. Go for it.

did you find that here... This is your first problem if you ask me, you come to xda to ask questions but you do not use the multiple root options that are stickied(for a reason mind you). Try to use a root from another area. Do yourself a favor and read the wugs thread or mskip. No need to go looking elsewhere since its all right in here.
If you have bricked other phone and not sure about what to do then I suggest you enjoy HSPA+ and try and deal with the buttons. Its a great phone and selling cheap now but that does not mean your brick it if you are not sure about rooting.

IMO the only thing daunting in this is the unlock procedure. Once unlocked then rooting, custom recoveries, custom roms, mods, themes, and all else become possible.
When I did it I went old school and used adb and the sdk and did everything manually. I learned a lot on the way, even as I was nervous and worried. I strongly recommend this approach though as it will help you to understand your phone and its operating system. And you also can begin to appreciate the beauty of open-source.
Just follow the directions in the guides posted here at XDA. Go slow. Read. Download the requirements. Be patient. Be meticulous. You will be ok... And if you really don't want to get your hands dirty use one of the 'kits' also available for download here at XDA.

The weird thing was I installed superuser just fine then went to install a few roms and couldn't get anything to work..
I'm just afraid of having a new phone and it instantly being paperweight.

sounds to me that you are not sure of yourself or have not done enough homework prior to flashing or rooting.. If thats the case leave your new phone alone and just enjoy it. Rooting is honeslty easy and fun but if you are not sure of yourself it could be a nightmare.
Its unlock bootloader run a command to push recovery and flash and su.zip quite simple by original 40 step Evo root procedure back in the days

That's the reason for old school. If you get a handle on the basics of adb your phone is almost indestructable from an OS and software standpoint because you can just return to stock images if things go south a little bit....

So guess what, I rooted and everything got Miui rom installed went to restore now my phones stuck on fastboot menu.
Any links on how to get 4.3 back on or am I screwed? cmd still detects my phone, theres gotta be a way to get out of this?
Never mind! Was able to download the stock img from google and restore the phone, whew.

Hmm, can you reboot to bootloader? If so, use Nexus Root Toolkit to flash stock and unbrick and start from there. Never install the SU that twrp suggests!!

@twrp, please fix this! its like a accident waiting to happen. I almost did this myself so many times.

He should learn how to use fastboot and do it properly without a tool kit. Tool kits lead to nothing but problems.
This is to OP.
YOU really need to stop messing with you're phone and learn what you're doing before you actually brick you're phone. What you have right now is not a brick and is incredibly easy to fix for someone who knows what they're doing. Do some reading and learning or you're going to end up with a fancy paperweight.

I understand what you are saying, but the toolkit is good if you are really stuck and are unsure of what to do. I do agree that learning the correct fastboot techniques is the best idea though!!

YOU really need to stop messing with you're phone and learn what you're doing before you actually brick you're phone. What you have right now is not a brick and is incredibly easy to fix for someone who knows what they're doing. Do some reading and learning or you're going to end up with a fancy paperweight.

I've already told you to use @Heisenberg guide like 3 or 4 times. Everything you need is in there. Legit everything. No more threads. You need to practice and learn this stuff. I know I'm coming off like a prick. But you need to try to learn this stuff or you're going to screw yourself. The guide is right in the stickies section of Q&A.
