CM7 to CM9 - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i upgraded my defy (red lens) to froyo. Then I installed CM72-111204.0310-nightly-defy.
Now I want to install CM90-120305-NIGHTLY-Defy.
Also I want to change the card. Should I change before or after the upgrade ?
And how to do the upgrade to cm9 ?

TO CLEAR YOUR CONFUSIONS ABOUT GB KERNEL ICS AND FROYO KERNEL ICS
I have seen lot of confused user out there asking about which kernel to flash and stuff... So here u go read below...
So our beloved Awsome Developers make two types of nightlies
1-For DefyPlus(Can Also be used on Defy(RedLens))
These are the GB/CM9 kernel builds
These are found under /cm9-nightly-defy+/ folder of the servers which we have
To install these you need to follow the TuT to install ICS Defy Plus Above...
Green Lens Camera Wont work on these(Correct me if I and wrong)
2-For Regular Defy(Do not work on Defy plus)
These are Froyo/CM7 kernel Builds
These are found under /CM9-Nightly-Defy/ folder of the servers which we have.
To install these follow the TuT to install CM9 ICS FOR Defy stated above
3-Well there is no 3rd build(There is The MileStone2 Port by Walter79,But now that we have camera on our builds that one is not usefull...)

So for installing ICS (CM9) I have to flash CM7kernel afterwards and I 'm working already with CM7!
That's very confusing for me.So I have to download the CM7 kernel and put it on my card first.
thanks a lot for the help.

Is it possible ?
i have not tried installing cm9 yet. but from what i read, you just simply reboot into recovery and do the following to downgrade to cm7:
1. wipe data and cache.
2. go into advanced and wipe dalvik cache.
3. go back, and select install zip from sd.
4. select zip from sd, and choose cm7 stable zip and flash. the full stable rom already contains the cm7 kernel. no need to flash separately.
5. again, select gapps zip and flash.
6. reboot.
if you just want to flash cm7 kernel because you want to install a nightly build (without kernel), just flash cm7-kernel-signed.zip, follow by the nightly zip, in step 4.
Yep thats right
Motorola Defy CM7 RC 1.5 OC 1GHz
You need to flash the froyo kernel first
1) Flash froyo sbf (stock rom)
2) root using superoneclick, install sndinitdefy
Then reboot into custom recovery and follow the below steps

Do you really need to flash froyo kernel first?
I have to come back to CM7 and do I really need to flash SBF first? Or can I simply flash CM7 with kernel package?

Please, if you don't know what you are talking about, don't mislead people. If I only need to change a single broken brick in the wall on the second floor, do I need to ruin the whole house and rebuild it?
No need to flash SBF. Just go into recovery, wipe data/cache and dalvik cache, flash CM7 kernel, flash CM7 build, flash gapps for CM, wipe cache and dalvik cache.
DONE!
As above is the right way I have done it lots of times.

[Q] Downgrade CM9 ?

Hello everybody, I recently decided to try CM9 after months with CM7,
Well, I didnt like... too many bugs for me.
I want to go back to Cm7 but i think I read somewhere that downgrades are tricky...
I flashed my phone a lot of times, got the bootloader and everything but is it exactly the same as any other rom ? Just copy files to sd card,
Clear all caches > update zip from sdcard -> etc etc ?
That's depends, do you have a Defy+ or Defy?, which CM9 kernel based did you flashed??, always keep in mind that Defy+ has GB Kernel and Defy Froyo Kernel, it means that the stock ROM comes with that Kernel version, so, if you flashed a CM9 GB kernel for Defy+ in your Defy/Defy+ you must flash the CM7 with GB Kernel or you can flash the Kernel via a CWM zip and then flash the CM7 which uses the Kernel you flashed, ALWAYS the kernel you have installed and the kernel that the ROM uses must be the SAME!
Good hacking!

Just do a data wipe > flash the CM7 you were using(or may try a new one) > boot to recovery > data, cache and dalvik wipe. Reboot. I think that should suffice!
I didnt flash any kernel m8, I got normal Defy...
I was told that if I got a CM7 before I just need to flash CM9 Froyo without any kernel (seems right as it worked).
Yes,in that case, do what pranks1989 says
Ty all, just charging my Defy to 100% and then I will try the new CM7.2
I'm using the 31 dec version of CM7.2, is great!

Make sure you are using SndInitDefy_2.3.apk. I used version 1.9 and had the exact same problem you had.

anybody?
you will need to flash a new SBFusing RSD lite.
I used this SBF http://www.multiupload.nl/I52KOPDS8N
It should work unless you have flashed a higher version before hand. If you have installed a higher version then try these SBF and use one the same version you flashed before.
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_jordanplus/list.php
Yes if you are installing ICS and following the defy+ guide dont flash the CM9 kernel.
If you want to install ICS then use this ROM http://defy-cm.net/CM9-NIGHTLY-120417-Defy+.zip Its the new epsylon one as I heard the Quarx has a few more issues not sure if the new build has sorted it out,
You can use the latest version of gapps found here http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120422-signed.zip
Follow these instructions using the rom and gapps I linked but skip the flash CM9 kernel
