Worried about encryption bug - Vibrant General

Been using ics passion for a couple months now as a daily driver and havent had many issues, but i recently read about the ics encryptiom bug that basically randomly bricks phones for no reason so im thinking about switching away till its safe...
I just wanna be sure what roms have this bug?
Also whats ics passion based on?
So would it be all ics or just CM9? Nexus ports? Aosp? Gsii?
Thank you in advance

Passion is based off CM9. All I know is people who have been using Passion have been getting that encryption crap; so if I were you I'd flash back to either a froyo rom or a GB rom just to be safe until devs can break this crap.

Never even heard of this bug, try other ics roms like euphoria or iczen

From what I can gather it is totally and completely random. I have seen it on Passion, CM9, Docmasters' AOKP, and one case on Zen. It is happening more frequently on Captivates, however just yesterday there was a thread in my tablet (OG Transformer) where it hit a guy on his tablet (rooted but stock ROM).
So far what I know is it runs an encryption process (which is normal) and your phone is supposed to throw out a standard key. But for some reason it skips this and bc of small skip, the encryption begins. That is what is locking up the internal SD. Everything is still there, you just can't get to it. If it happens, there is no way to stop it or recover from it. There is a way to repartition your external_sd to make your phone think it is the internal and install your apps there plus whatever you put on it (pix, music,videos,...).
Sucks!!! I put a big warning in my ICS guide to say that if the error is thrown, DO NOT HIT RESET and a link to the fix but it is happening to everyone from noobs to experienced users.
Here is the thread in the Cappy forums on the workaround.
[Guide] Encryption Unsuccessful - Reset Android [ICS Issue]
The guy who it happened to on the Zenwich ROM was able to use the above as a workaround but his internal is shot/locked up.
It is a real scare and no one knows how it starts or why or how to stop it and should be a real consideration on whether or not to flash ICS ROMs.

Thanks guys.. i guess im switxhing back to gb or froyo
So its an ics thing i guess?

Yeah it's an ICS thing and completely random, I was running ICZen when I read this. I went back to GB and wait until the devs figured out what cause this and fix this damn issue.

Wow, 5 stars for this thread. Thanks for letting us know!

Whoa, ANY ICS rom? Or just Samsungs? If its any, wow. Good thing we don't have HW acceleration or I'd be on ICS too.
As an added note, I ran Passion on my Vibrant for about 3-4 months, never had this issue.

Same, i ran mine ssince V7 in early feb lol

This hit me on Sunday. My Vibrant keeps rebooting and won't let me do anything. I Odined back to stock and still nothing. If we could find someone who could create a tar file that can be used in Odin that repartitions the internal SDcard that would be sweet. But yes. It SUX!!! And I was running Euphoria.

It has mainly been on Passion and CM9 variants but the other day it hit a Zen and now [your] Euphoria (both AOKP variants). I am still looking into this and reading the Cappy and I9000 threads but for now, Merio90 has an Odin package and instructions for a work around. It is here.

Sitting on the fence

So here I sit, on the fence, with my rooted stock Epic.
Nothing has really substantiated the rumors of Froyo for the 21st, and that just makes me think it's not coming (and if SamsungJohn was going to finally say something substantial, a yea or nay would be a nice start).
But this is not a thread about the OTA.
I'm just thinking... if OTA is really imminent, then I'll just wait and let the devs work on it. But if it's not... then it's time to look at one of the available ROMs.
ViperRom 4.0.4 looks damn sweet... love the ViperWheel widget... but it was held up from its Monday release (are they waiting for source code drop too?). And there is Midnight and Nebula which I kinda like also.
I guess I could start the process of checking them out.
Or I could just sit here and wait. I'm going out of town this weekend and probably should leave things alone until I get back home.
Until then I ask anyone who is running those ROMs... would I lose Swype if I switch ROMs? I really like Swype...
I am stock/rooted, pretty much in the same situation. Will wait until the end of the month if no stock Froyo materializes will look into roms and modding a bit. I depend on my phone's functions all working for my business and would rather not take a chance that I will lose functionality by flashing to the Froyo leak.
i was waiting like you guys til the other week and i went to bonsai, and everything is working superbly.
I was getting sick of stock rom and 2.1, not being able to have hulu or flash as well as a few apps that are must have like Humans vs aliens as well as Andy-83.
Im now just waiting for the official source so it can be improved, but ive had no issues on bonsai and reccomend it, if you want something fast and clean..
give the latest midnight a shot it works really good just wipe 3x before loading and be happy. swype works for me just have to switch text imput method from gb to swype.
Soooo. Oh., before that... I am so glad I rooted and mod. I ran midnight ... and cut my teeth on the ext4 .... the cwm .... and after root and rom messed around with themes. After my ver of midnight got a few weeks old I switched to bonzai and I love it too... it just works. Wait a few ... but its worth it.
Btw ... will we have to wait a while for the new stock 2.2 to get rooted or... is once root always root? Curious.

VIPERrom 4.0.4 does look sweet. I'm currently running FRoZen 4.0.3, and it has been great. I highly recommend the VIPERroms. I be jonesin' for that 4.0.4 son!

ROM's
I spent last weekend loading up all of the different (read more popular) ROM's and the most stable and straight forward one to me was Nebula Seven Sisters. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863154
The developer made it a point of keeping a lot of the stock look and features while improving on what Froyo brought to the table. I did not have any real functional issues with Viper, Midnight or TrulyEpic, it just seemed that Nebula was trying to keep the experience closer to stock than the others.
Other people will say they like the modified skins, the launcher pro, the Viper wheel, etc. For them, that is the case. That is the great thing about the developers of the ROM's, they are doing this to cater to different crowds.
So really, there is no need to wait for Sprint or Samsung here, download Odin, grab some ROM's and have fun with your phone! All I can say is to make Clockwork backups often, it makes the process of going back to the ROM you liked two days ago so much easier!
Randy
could try the Syndicate Rom, for 2.1.... see how fast the 2.2.1 roms WILL be after source... but other than that, they are all stable from what I read, some people have a few issues, depends a lot on you though. If you have a ton of stuff to reinstall after a clean wipe, might as well wait out the weekend, not for an OTA, slim chance there... but just so you have time.... sometimes things take longer, you may go thru 5 roms before you find the one you like... etc.

DK28 is buggy but it is better than 2.1 by far. You really don't lose anything by going with one of the available ROMs right now. Presumably they will all have an update once the new version is sent out from Sprint (whether it be on the 21st or not). If you're running a custom 2.2 ROM, you'll just do a CWM backup, update to the newer version of whichever ROM you like, and then restore your data.
I went back and forth between Quantum and Bonsai ROM today. It takes no more than 10 minutes to fully swap ROMs. Just do it, you'll be glad you did. And if a new version of 2.2 comes out in the next 5 days, it will only take a few minutes (max) of your time to upgrade to it.

Is 7sisters smoother than bonsai?Im asking because I want minimal rom so I can add my own things to it.
Well, I've just flashed DK28 and CWM just finished converting to EXT4. It's party time.
Viper brings some great stuff to the table.
Nebula is stability first, which is important to me since my business and my phone are virtually inseparable.
I also like Midnight's BYOR modular format, keeping bloat to a minimum.
I'll have a fun time with this.

No need to odin,odin only if nothing else works!
In ur case pull out bettery,put it back in,hold power+vol down+camera to get back into cmw3 and try again.
This will save you some time.
Everyone should be warned of one MAJOR issue. If you use you phone for primary internet access anywhere you go; whether at home or at work or wherever. The tethering drops you no matter what you use at random. It is very frustrating and annoying. If it wasn't for this I'd be 100% satisfied with nebula already; but it isn't the rom's problem, it's with DK28. Some people use wireless tethering but I cannot with 2 different desktops I use my phone for internet connectivity.

Make sure you watch some of Randy Shear's videos on youtube if you're new at this. He very slowly goes through many of the basic steps in putting a new rom on your phone. If you skip a step you cause yourself triple work. Just take your time and watch a few of his video's and just put the rom on your want. His Viper Apoc 4.0.2 video is excellent.

Best rom to use

I know I'm sure I saw this asked already and apologize but I'm completely new to all this and dont know what roms to use or anything. So any suggestions would be awesome. And am I even asking in the right area? Haha

You'll get lots of differing opinions, here's mine. (I know that this won't make any friends here)
None of the current batch of ROMS is solid yet. They each have a fatal flaw. I've tried a few but ended up back on stock EB13 with the camera fix kernel flashed over it. And frankly if you flash stock EB13 using the Samsung installer it's pretty good right out of the box.
And, regardless of what people tell you flashing an Epic is not trivial for a noob. Just read all the frantic posts from people trying to figure out why their phone won't boot. Before you get started be sure you know what Odin is and how to use it (and which PIT files go with which PDA files), what the difference between EXT4 and RFS is and which version of clockwork you can use with each, and what deodexed means. There are enough variable that you have to get right that a little knowledge can save you hours, maybe days of wasted time.
If you have to try one, read the WHOLE thread before flashing and see what's now working yet. If you decide that doesn't matter to you, flash away.

Good advice here.
Regarding roms, I have to say that I think the new SyndicateROM Frozen 1.0 (1.0.1 is almost out) is a solid replacement from stock. People have had issues with bad flashes (thx CW3) but once it's installed properly the battery lasts hours longer, it's incredibly quick, and has a number of improvements over stock. Keep in mind I wasn't using roms before this due to requiring the stability of stock (was on the stock rooted EB13), but am in heaven since I switched over. The rom is amazing. None of the instability issues I have had with my previous phones+roms.
I haven't tried the Bonzai rom though, heard that was stable and good as well.

Agreed. SyndicateROM seems to be the best and most stable ROM right now. That is until CM7 is done. Then everyone will burn out to Gingerbread.
By the way...did you go with Ext4 or RFS?
I have not had any issues with viper frozen or trulyepic. Trulyepic was my first. Very simple both flashy and stable. Ext4 is super fast too.

Simply AOSP is great with the Genocide kernel.
fwiw i use midnight rom 4.0. been solid for me.
different folks, different strokes....
ive been on viper for awhile now and have no complaints.. everything works for me.. looks awesome,runs great.
Also been on Viper for the last few releases. Have not had issues as of yet. You'll get quite a few opinions, but all the devs here do a great job on their roms.
Samsung Epic ViperROM 4.0.4 Genocide kernel
I intend on trying multiple roms......right now I am on the sideline waiting for some of the significant issues (ie CIQ) to be resolved before I flash. Only a day or two away I believe.
When I first came to the Epic modding world, I started off using ViperRom. ViperRom has a lot of those cutting edge, sometimes experimental, mods. The new toys (and their themes are generally aesthetically pleasing) are nice, but may cause stability issues. I then switched to MidNightRom and was VERY pleased with it. It is based off the Bonsai ROM and is slimmed down for performance and stability. No complaints there, But I am currently using the ACS Frozen ROM, and I am VERY pleased with it as well. Speed and performance all around. So far, that is all I have tried.
Everything will vary based on user, but all the devs here put a lot of work into what they do and any ROM you flash will be an upgrade from stock in my opinion.
Try Frankenstein. I prefer bare.

I've seen your posts outlining what you think are bugs in the various SC versions. And I have never encountered any of the "bugs and issues" ever since I started using any of the versions of supah clean. Since you have issues others don't you should place blame on what you do after the rom flash.

Ever since installing v2.92 of super clean, I have had zero issues. The sleep of death also seems to be gone.
Instead of making general accusations, why not be part of the solution and list each issue you have so others can either validate or disprove your claims. Only then will your "tons of bugs" get any attention.
Are you really thinking *****ing about nonspecific bugs will make your device run better?
Also, get spellcheck or use an app like ShapeWriter which spells the words for you. It's just sad.

Are you serious? I have run nothing BUT Adrynalyne's ROM's since I even started with this stuff, and have NEVER had a problem directly related to/caused by his code. This dude puts in WORK, for FREE mind you, and does an AWESOME job at it to boot. Any bugs you have is honestly of your own doing, do some reading and search for solutions, not just bash Adrynalyne for stuff that isn't his fault.

WOW can the dev's add minutes to your account?
**** I missed that update
Zero problems with superclean, especially since 2.9. I've been hammering the hell out of it trying to figure out why it seems we can't restore a themed nandroid backup without getting caught in a FCLOH at boot animation. I've been flashing all kinds of different themes, patches, and mods in different combinations without one single force close, glitch, bug, or issue until trying to restore a nandroid. But I think that has to do with cwm and not being able to fix permissions in cwm, not with superclean.
And to quote Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction - "English Mother Trucker, do you speak it?"

Been working on it for a while and only been able to consistently restore a nandroid of just the base ROM. Which is asinine because I can just flash the base ROM, reboot, boot back to cwm, flash theme, reboot, boot to cwm, flash patches and mods, and reboot in the same amount of time it takes to restore nandroid of just the base ROM. High poster over at Android Central Fascinate forum, just starting to post more here.
Have a good day yourself.
Why is it everyone thinks I'm *****ing or placing blame on adrenaline for the sc roms? The developers do great stuff. and the issues with the rom are well known and have filled the forum for months.. I have always put the blame on faulty or incomplete code from sammy. And those issues were probably the reason it took so long for release. So simply inquiring or prodding for an answer to the question "will source lead to a new sc rom is perfectly valid. I'm still not seeing why such a post is off topic, unless someone is not making the connection between the op and source. And being that the source is sammys official build. But if it will make the forum neater, when a question comes to mind when reading a thread I will make a new post instead of replying.

But if it will make the forum neater, when a question comes to mind when reading a thread I will make a new post instead of replying.

You didnt even state it is samsungs fault or anything in your first post. By only saying the ROM is full of bugs, you are essentially saying that it is Adrys fault. (Although the code may be from samsung, it is Adry who creates the rom).
It may be perfectly valid to say that a new source may lead to a better rom in the original thread, but it does not require you to create a brand new thread saying "Why the hell is my post deleted". You can always repost the same thing in the thread again, not create a brand new topic where you seem to be only complaining.

you can put lipstick on a pig, but...
Your work is great. And the question was never pointing at your work. You bring great things to this phone. But as you said yourself. You make changes and they may work great on your phone but then other people have issues, weather its the phone, flash method, or an installed app.. And I'm believe my original question stated " sense people have so many issues". Which Is what i gather from reading the forums. I had sod when I tried it so I reverted. I apologize if the way I worded it caused offense, I meant none.

plz vote ( are u with LPY ICS or going back to GB)

THERE IS ANOTHER POST AND POLL THIS IS REDUNDANT
~~~THREAD CLOSED~~~
plz vote ( are u with ICS or going back to GB)
There is already a post with this exact same question and a poll to answer.
Pointless waste of a thread.
On topic: LPY ICS !
Using stock ics latest update and ....hell no! No never gb for me. This rom is f!cking great. All i need now is a custom kernel(thats made with original sourses). No home made brick kernels with no wifi, black camera screen, buggy speaker.
updated to LPY two days ago... loving it so far...
wifi is good, battery life is good, no overheating problems...
The only 'complaint' i have is that it seems to be a bit of a memory hog... but i can wait for a strimmed down custom Rom based on this one to take care of that issue...
overall, pretty damn happy with it
M
Was on stock ics rooted with a few home made improvements and loving it but ......... I brought my note outright without contract so should anything go wrong I'm looking at a £400 paper weight, not worth the risk so..... I'm back to CM9 for now
just i want to know the no of bricked phones compared to all
Considering what we've seen CM9, repacked i9220 kernel, or home made kernel has been the common denominator in every brick
Totally using official ics and loving it. ;-)
Are you rooted with CWM?
Youhou another useless post about lpy supposed bug.
Seriously, just make the moderator make a post-it and it'll be enough, no need to open 100 post a day about that.
And what is this poll supposed to do ? Found a solution ? There arent enough "discussions" about it yet ?
On one level I agree with you. However when you have a trusted dev saying it's bugged and that his home grown kernel is not, yet all bricks lead back to CM9/repacked i9220, it makes it hard for me to believe that source considering the amount of donations. I look at what's happening and the results of the numerous upgrades being flashed over the past few days to use that as an indicator. Until LPY kernel source is released and the experts can comb through it, there is no real answer. I don't use CM, it's just not my flavor...but I really mean no disrespect to the work put forth by the many people who do work on CM.
There should be no reason to do a full wipe if you're not getting force closes or other weird screen issues like pixel salads or SODs (screen of death where screen stays black for a good minute with responding).
Correction: only 1 brick was tied to CM9 and still no guarantee that cm9 was the cause in any way.
The leaked kernel? Yes bricks are confirmed to be related to wipes and stuff using that kernel.
There is 0 evidence than CM9 has anything to do with a single brick. Just because people that have bricked have previously used CM9 is not a factor. If that was the case then why not say that official samsung gb was the cause, after all, Every Brick thats been reported was running that rom at some point.
Your arguement is invalid.
Note: CM9 is great, fix the few issues with speaker and whatnot and I will never use stock again!
Correction: before "official" CM9 there was imilkas...which bricked many others. then there was xplod's donated device during kernel development which you can take that as you will.
My argument is valid...I'm using common denominators. But if you read my whole post, I said there is no real answer...so I'm not trying to be "right"...it's my opinion/observation
I moved back my sister phone to GB because of the brick issues in LPY ICS and high battery usage !
Got my galaxy note!
Hey guys.
My galaxy note will be arriving tomorrow. And just been reading the sticky about peoples devices becoming un-usable after flashing certain ICS roms.
Want to know what advice on ROMS people have got to give me as I want to flash a custom rom before I start using it.
Throw anything at me, what to stay away from and what not.
Welcome to the note, I'm sure you'll be overwhelmed as I was for the first 3 or so days, and that doesn't really seem to wear off too much
We've got a great amount of development and support going on for this device. If you're interested in ics straight off, check out the following thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1659768. That shows you the safe builds vs the current affected ICS kernels that could brick you. Personally, CM9 and paranoid Android are the most enticing, although both in early stages.
Also, check out Dr. Ketans guide to ROM installation and rooting, it's a sticky in the ROM development section and has everything you need to get rooted and cwm installation which you will need on your out of the box gingerbread before you can flash custom roms and kernels.
There's loads on here, and everybody has their own preferences, so hunt around. I hope you get as much joy, and fear, as I do
Welcome! Just stay away from anything and everything related to ICS except the official CM9 nightlies. basically its the only safe way to get ICS on the phone (at the cost of S-memo etc. of course).
Thats about it, really. you might feel too big at first but give it 5 days and everything else will just seem too small. dat screen.
